Not that I have any sources or might know stuff but....

David Stern's office sent out a memo this morning to team owner's and to CP3's agent warning them that any tampering or attempts at backdoor deals will be greeted with a $5 million fine.

It's getting pretty serious considering how "happy" everyone was when Paul met with the Hornets mgmt. on Monday, eh? Darth Stern apparently senses someone is tampering with the Force.

Nobody is going to convince me that MJ isn't talking to his Jordan Brand buddy OR convince me that Paul will be in a Hornets uniform very much longer.

I'm just saying.

So during the playoffs

when CP3 was sitting next to Jordan, couldn’t that be considered tampering? Maybe that was just a coincedence and they never spoke. Makes sense. Anyway I hope he gets this deal done soon so I can get back to work!

I don't think it could technically

He was a player under contract, who hadn’t demanded a trade who was watching a playoff game in his home state.

Leaving the country

I feel you. I’m getting ready to leave for an 8 day cruise and while the small part of my brain that is still sane is saying, “I get 8 days to not worry about what the Bobcats are doing,” the other part is saying, “How can I survive 8 days without RoF!” That’s the price I pay for jumping on the Bobcats train 6 years I guess. It will be tough to prove though...

Especially since CP3 is signed to the Jordan brand. They can just be talking “shoes” can’t they?

If Paul were smart, he’d want to come to home. The Jordan brand signage would be amazing with CP3 images all over TWCA.

In Jordan's Crow's Nest...a few miles from TWC Arena

So Chris…with these new shoes I’m designing…
I’m thinking of going with this orange here, and this blue color here…you like that?
What size you wear? If you want a pair, I’ll hook you up…you will want to shop for some clothing that really brings out these colors…(Jordan pauses and looks out the window at TWC arena, smiles, and looks back at Chris)
Anyway, thanks for stopping by and thanks for the housewarming gift…
Hope to see you again soon. Say hi to your folks for me…

Just a thought...

When i heard about this “no tampering” i immediately thought about Jordan. Gotta be smooth about this, and the business relationship is a great cover. The other team trying to acquire CP are the Nets and their ultra-rich owner Mikail Prochorov. 5 mil would be a huge blow to Jordan and the Bobcats. The same cannot be said of Prochorov. That’s like rent money to him. Sounds like Stern is flat out telling Jordan to back down. Very, very curious indeed.

5mil

Is not the only fine thats just one of them, the others include “suspension of the offending person, prohibition of the offending team from hiring the person being tampered with, forfeiture of draft picks and individual and/or team fines of up to $5 million.”

So...

Chris, you ever been to a turkish prison?

by PootieTang on Jul 29, 2010 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

My point is MJ is in more of a position to tamper than any other owner in these talks because of his business relationships with multiple players, CP included. I just feel like that is Stern telling MJ, without singling him out, to watch himself in his attempt at landing CP. Agree or am i crazy…?

by kittylover on Jul 29, 2010 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with you...

Or its the simple fact that NO is actually not interested right now b/c they’re waiting to see what happens in the coming weeks, and as soon as teams found out about their meeting (with all of the speculation prior to it that CP would ask for a trade), they immediately started calling the hornets. Reports said that NJ, ORL, and CHA were all contacting them inquiring about Paul. Plus Leon Rose has been talking to teams as well, and since he can’t get into trouble b/c he’s not a league employee, Stern felt that he needed to step in.

by paison on Jul 29, 2010 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

If it were only Rose, the memo wouldn't have gone to all 30 owners INCLUDING Shinn.

No, the only way this could have been more obvious would have been if were addressed “to the Charlotte Bobcats and the rest of you guys.”

I personally think this is a very frustrated David Stern. He realizes it would be almost impossible to prove collusion or tampering but cannot resist acting all big and bad. The message was clearly directed at Michael Jordan and Leon Rose, but it was also a response to all the reports of Lebron James trying to give his good buddy Paul advice via Twitter. Let’s be real. If Lebron wants to give advice to Paul (or Paul wanted to seek it) they need only hit a button on the Blackberry. Running it publicly through Twitter is just arrogance and Stern doesn’t like that crap one little bit.

Nobody is fooling anyone. Within an hour of the “happy happy joy joy” messages coming out of the meeting on Monday, the media was all over the matter calling it a smokescreen and mentioning the Bobcats in the trade talks for the very first time out in the open. If Stern hadn’t sent that memo he would have continued to look like the only person looking at the NBA that was clueless as to what is really going on. Stern is all about public perception and spin-doctoring and this is just him saving face. On matters like this he may just be a paper tiger, but it’s of paramount importance to him that the public still thinks he has sharp claws and big, pointy, teeth.

My sources can beat up your sources

by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 29, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think it’s so much saving face as looking for some way to bring this insanity to an end. I have a feeling this summer has been a nightmare for Stern. With all the “tampering” and “unofficial meetings” and what not, he’s no longer in control of his organization. LeBron is performing a coup and trying to suck up as much power as possible. The NBA has never seen anything like this before. Next up is the CBA discussions. Owners may have painted themselves into a corner with the money they’ve been giving out, but I have a feeling the league is concerned with the amount of power the players are usurping. But I digress.

by drapht00 on Jul 29, 2010 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree regarding the CBA

Everything I’ve seen indicates that the players union keeps presenting what is largely a “maintain the status quo” package whle the owners are actively looking for ways to cut salaries, contract lengths, and anything else that benefits the players. The league itself screwed up something royal though with the annual financial reporting. First they claimed that the league operated at a $375 million loss and then turned around and bumped the cap amounts higher although those levels are supposedly based on the league revenue figures. That rather large contradiction has the lawyers for the player’s union raising unholy hell.

I get sick every time I think about it but it’s looking increasingly likely that there will be a lockout after this season and the loss of at least part of the 2011/2012 regular season. Basketball and soccer are really the only 2 major sports I really enjoy watching anymore so that is really gonna suck.

my obligatory comment

As quite possibly the only fan in America (though there are surely many more like me in the more advanced European countries and maybe even Canada?) who is 145% behind the players’ associations in every sport, I understand that it is my sacred obligation to chime in with a comment on this.

A lock-out would indeed really really suck.

Oh no, he’s going to tell one of his stories now…

(Yes, but a brief one.) In the early ‘90s in my doctoral program… yeah, yeah, liberal elitist, out of touch, can’t hit his free throws, yeah yeah, I know, I’ve heard it… I realized that my voluminous commentary in seminars generally just repeated the same set of limited themes over and over and over. So I categorized them: a) agenda bias; b) faulty methodology; c) obfuscatory jargon, etc. with a few handy labels, distributed a hand-out with this typology to the rest of the class, and commandeered the board to explain. From then on, I said, rather than waste everyone’s air-time by winding out my observations on any particular point, I would just raise my hand when appropriate and choosing from my menu recite “3, 7, maybe 8…” or somesuch and leave it at that, and my fellow scholars could refer to the code I had provided for an explanation. It worked fairly well. In fact, one of my buddies began using the technique himself and at one point our esteemed dept chair, a crusty old dude from central Texas who looked and sounded very much like Lyndon Johnson, even referred to my code so as to expedite some point he wanted to make which didn’t warrant long-winded explication. (Ok, so it turned out to be not such a short one… well that’s my point exactly… so from now on maybe let’s call “union good capitalist exploiter bad” theme #3 in my posts as #1 and #2 have been retired from over-use.)

#3. A lock-out would really really suck.

Great observation, that's exactly what the mobster is saying

Jersey trying to lay the foundation so they can tip the teapot whenever the timing is right. I seriously doubt anything happens this year…more likely cloer to the trade deadline. BUT..Melo has got to determine if he will sign the extension offered, and he and CP3 will have to collude (excuse me)…collaborate, on the next steps, before he decides to lock and load or wait till next year. The lockout is gonna make it a bummer of a year next season anyway….

Nothing happening until after the season starts...

I know it’s Bonnell (so consider the source), but I exchanged emails with him yesterday and he strongly believes it’s likely that this team stands pat until the season starts. I have a hard time believing that as I still feel they are positioning for something…whether it’s Paul, or someone/something else. I’m one of those that checks all the sites (realgm, hoopshype, hoopsworld, bobcatsbaseline) everyday to see what has occurred, or what rumors are out there, and each day I’m alittle more disappointed. I am afraid this team is standing pat.

by TS BOBCAT on Jul 30, 2010 10:25 AM EDT reply actions

Completely agree..

I agreed with letting Felton walk, but wasn’t crazy about Chandler leaving because I think once he was healthy towards the end of the yr, he was productive for us. And to trade him for Dampier’s contract, which we know he’s going to be cut….with all that said, there has to be something in the works. DJ and Livingston, and Collins as the 3rd PG is not an upgrade in my opinion. Maybe they are attempting to stay afloat for a yr at that position and do something big next yr, but based off MJ’s comments (“we’re just getting started”) and what they’ve done, just seems like they’re not done yet. Plus, someone over at bobcatsbaseline made a good point in that if they end up signing Amundson from PHX, they will have an abundance of PFs/Cs…so that makes you believe they have to make some kind of move. We know they’re shopping Diaw based off the attempted Toronto move, so something has to happen, right? I just don’t want to be disappointed at this point.

by jgbball on Jul 30, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

The Dampier move was all about luxury tax

Yes, it gives us flexibility to offer in possible trades, but this team cannot turn Dampier into a the same $ back, without finding a way to dump Diaw’s salary. The Calderon deal, if it could be made for Diaw, would still work, but Toronto does not want to take on more salary back, and they need a 5 not another 4. Since they clearly cannot move Diaw, and nobody needs tax relief that badly (other than us), we will wait until the last minute and then waive Damp. They will continue to pursue deals but the market is getting really quiet now. The shopping season has come and gone and we are left standing at the curb, waiting for Grandpa Larry to bring the LeBaron around back to pick us up…

That reminds me of a joke

A rich Arab sheik had to come to the United States on business and thought it would be a great opportunity to take his young son abroad. The son had never left home and was very naive. He was also his father’s pride and joy. As they were flying across the ocean the son was wide-eyed with wonder at the amenities of the private jet. “Oh Da,” the boy said in awe, “what is this wonderful machine?” The father explained that it was a Leer Jet. In an excited voice, the boy said, “I want a Leer jet Da!” The father, unable to resist his boy’s demand, picked up the phone and spoke for a minute. A moment later the son had a jet of his very own.

As they left the airport, the son spoke up again. “Da, what is this wonderfull machine we are in now that even has a refrigerator and television inside?” The father explained that it was a Hummer limo. “Oh Da, I want a Hummer limo!” The father picked up the phone and a moment later the son had a limousine of his very own.

When they arrived at the hotel the son saw a little boy and spoke once again. “Da? Why is that little boy wearing the strange gloves on his hand and the funny black round ears on his head?” The father explained that the little boy was dressed up as Mickey Mouse. “Oh Da!” the little boy proclaimed, “I want a Mickey Mouse outfit!” The father picked up the phone and a moment later the son owned the Hornets.

I'm not sure what role T-Mac would play here

He wants significant minutes (not 36, but clearly mid-20’s or more) and plays SF/SG, much as Jax does. I just don’t see the role being here for him, but I do wonder if he has some game left. Iverson is not a PG and I do not want him here. Shaq will not sign here, BUT, if he would for the vet minimum (even if it’s a 2 year deal) I’d do it (after waiving Damp). He’d certainly help ticket sales and would help bring some power to our 5 spot, even in limited minutes. It would allow us to aggressively shop Nazr and his expiring later in the year, perhaps in concert with Diaw, for a quality PG or C.

Guys...

Just a tip…don’t post just to post. From what I have seen…you guys all keep saying the same thing over and over…

CP3 wants to stay…CP3 wants to go. This is week old news…
At this point everyone keeps hopping a side and posting…just to post…
I hop in here and I see new stuff and I think ooooh boy! Someone has some new info…then…more of the same…
I don’t mind all the extra reading, but here’s the thing:

All of the newsmedia has already said what a “good boy” CP3 is being about the whole situation. It has stated that it is very obvious that he is going through the motions to avoid a fine. It states he cannot demand a trade without being fined. It has also been presented through the media on the side that he is dying to stay, dying to go, and going through the motions. All 3 stances are based off of last week’s info. Unless there have been a number of metings taking place and CP3 is running through the talk show circuit, George Shinn is holding a press conference, Michael Jordan is holding a press conference, or Bonnell has written ANYTHING since last week…there is NO NEW INFORMATION.
Maybe I’m in a bad mood…maybe not…
Just sick and tired of everyone going from 1 side to the other
There’s only one set of info out there, and after the initial comments on it, unless something else comes out…SHHHHHHHHHHHHH

This site has moved slower or me than it has all year…and I attribute most of it to the hundreds and hundreds of repeated posts in the same blog, in new blogs, and the increase in lurkers. I know we’re all excited, but I believe the term is known as beating a dead horse.

Master trade a few weeks back didn’t happen…we’ve let it go…

New GM in place in NO…set

Meeting with CP3 that can be interpreted in 1 of 3 ways, and has been by the newsmedia, us, CP3s family, the guy on the corner, my 2.5 year old, my mom…done…

NO has decided what they are going to do, because it is their decision and their decision alone…we’re still waiting…so….

Wait for it…

And quit rehashing the same info over and over…
My eyes are getting tired of reading it over and over…

You spelled "meetings" incorrectly.

You lose 3 princess points and won’t receive your gold star for the week.
Further demerits may result in a visit from the Grammar Police who will beat you about the head with “English Grammar and Vocabulary for College Freshmen.” Also, under the Patriot Act, you may be forced – without trial or attorney – to watch a special three-hour long video of Shaq and Diop in a free throw shooting contest.
This will be your only warning.

My sources can beat up your sources

WHere could I rent that DVD?

I figure I might as well start getting used to watching it…
It’s going to be a long season…
