Looking Back on the Tyson Chandler/Emeka Okafor Trade

The Bobcats have actually done very well the last few trades they have pulled off, with each improving the team in one way or another. Although Tyson Chandler was hurt and Okafor was a bigger factor for the Hornets, it's now clear that the Bobcats got the better of the deal.

I know John Hollinger and the staff at ESPN absolutely hated this trade on our behalf, even going on record as saying they can't believe anybody would trade Okafor for Chandler. They always kept talking about how much of an upgrade Okafor was over Chandler. Excited that the Bobcats were "finally getting rid of the mediocrity", I was actually ecstatic about the trade. Not that Emeka Okafor  was a bad guy or anything. I'm sure the rest of the people in Charlotte, like myself, came to know Okafor as being a class act role model. The only thing was his lack of passion for the game. Despite averaging double-doubles, you could always see it. Once coach Larry Brown began taunting him about his yoga at the conclusion of the previous season, I was preparing myself to move on without our first draft pick ever. Surprisingly, it was very easy for me to let go emotionally when the day finally came that he was gone.

Chandler: 51 G, 6.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.1 bpg

Okafor: 82 G, 10.4 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 1.5 bpg

Although Okafor did as I expected and had the better year of the two, I always looked at it as a financial move. Clearly, we had overpaid for Okafor and were going to be in a knot financially for years to come having him on board. He was coming off the first year of a 6 year extension we signed him to, and Chandler only had 1 more left plus a player option. Now, a year later, here we are. Emeka Okafor has one of the most untradeable contracts in the NBA and Charlotte just flipped Tyson Chandler into the NBA's most wanted contract (Erick Dampier) and two role players who even though are overpaid, fill two much needed voids for the Bobcats, a three point specialist (Matt Carrol) and a back up PF who hustles his ass off every night (Eduardo Najera).

The Bobcats may even be able to turn Dampier's contract into Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor. Now if the Bobcat's front office can pull that off, I would look at them like absolute geniuses. Missing Chandler for a good part of the year's impact was only minimal. With him healthy or not, we were not a championship caliber team with Raymond Felton and Boris Diaw out there running around. Now, we are position to make that jump to being a good team to a great team. GOD BLESS MICHAEL JORDAN!!!!

It depends...

If we flip Dampier into something, then we got a great deal.

If we don’t, then it wasn’t a good deal.

I understand the 'toxic contract' aspect...

But if we end up cutting Dampier then we ostensibly traded Emeka Okafor and Alexis Ajinca for Eduardo Najera and Matt Carroll.

Najera and Carroll are making a combined $7.1 million this year. I think the extra $3 million for a starting center instead of two backups would have been worth it.

Making that deal even worse..

Is considering it was Okafor and a 1st round pick for Carroll and Najera. Ajinca was a total bust, and the value of that pick was far greater than the player we chose.

If we don’t it was down right terrible especially how Tyson played in the USA exhibition

I have to agree with James. If we do not turn Dampiers’ contract into something, and i mean something pretty good, than we will have failed. I still have faith, but the longer we sit idle after the Dallas trade the worse i feel about it…

I found it funny Espn's Rumors section now has...

Melo a possibility for New Orleans… I don’t know what the article contains because I refuse to sign up for insider. Eventually to even access the site you will need Insider. Insider isn’t all that “inside”

by JDuaneHipps on Jul 27, 2010 4:23 PM EDT reply actions

I got it for you right here brother.....

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated suggested on Tuesday morning that if another star comes to New Orleans, Chris Paul would stay.

“Lakers window is 2-3 years,” he continued. “After that a Paul-led Hornets team could be among favorites in West. Just have to be smart next 18 months.”

So who could the team attract?

Well, Carmelo Anthony has yet to sign a contract extension with Denver, and he’s eligible to become a free agent next summer.

There have been talks of Melo and Paul heading to New York to form their own Big Three with Amare Stoudemire, so both players teaming up in New Orleans isn’t that far-fetched — though New York is certainly a bigger stage than New Orleans.

The Hornets have around $69 million in committed salaries for next season, so the team doesn’t have a lot of financial flexibility right now.

But according to HoopsHype.com, their payroll is currently set for about $47 million heading into 2011-2012, as Peja Stojakovic’s large contract comes off the books after this season.

If the Hornets can make a few smart moves to clear some more salary (or if David West opts out of the last year of his deal), Melo could conceivably be had — especially if he comes under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement.

Of course, it’s possible Paul is traded out of town before Melo becomes available in free agency next summer — something we noted earlier on Tuesday. And this is all provided Melo doesn’t extend his contract in Denver.

But if a few things fall into place, it’s conceivable.

Good looks...

Thanks for the post. In reality it’s really just somebody stating a theory and I’d have to pay money for that when I have plenty of my own. Damn you Insider, such a tease (no homo.) They just messed up the teams. Paul and Melo will be uniting in Charlotte. A man can dream, but in the end I’m afraid it’s just that…a dream.

by JDuaneHipps on Jul 27, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

No doubt.

Yeah, I know, they should have information from ROF as “Insider” information if this Paul deal goes down. And if the Melo deal goes down, I might charge myself a fee to converse with James and Ourday. Lol.

It's possible

But for that to happen George Shinn would need to act distinctly un-George Shinn like

I really think there is no way we sit on Dampier's contract.

Let’s keep in mind who we’re talking about here, Michael Jordan and Larry Brown. They’re known to be willing and dealing at all times. Even if we’re not the team to land Paul, there are other options. And either way, I’m sure we’ll be in on the trade somehow.

Interesting take on Oak

http://www.atthehive.com/2010/7/27/1590393/defending-emeka-okafor

You have to look at the overall context of the trade. Much like NO this year, this deal had to be done in order to lower the overall debt of the franchise and to facilitate a sale. Funny how the moving of Oak will be the catalyst to two NBA franchise sales.

Is Chandler as good as Okafor, if both are healthy? The numbers say no (Ch 8/8 Oak 13/10 career averages) but Chandlers expiring was obviously very attractive. If it did nothing else other than help MJ buy the team, then I say it was a success. If it nets us Chris Paul and/or Melo, then I say it was nothing short of genius.

by blueridgecat on Jul 27, 2010 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

Lol, I never really thought about the fact that

moving Okafor has been the key to facilitating both team sales. Lol. Damn, Oak is really toxic.

Trading Okafor wasn't the lynch pin to get MJ's ownership

It was more of an overture to Tom Kostopoulos than to Jordan. MJ came to the ownership party very late.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Jul 27, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

I was so on the Kostopoulos bandwagon because I was afraid that MJ would be an apathetic, absent owner.

I’m glad I was wrong

Who knows?

Maybe under Kostopoulos’ watch we would have Wade, LBJ, Bosh and Wallace. (I kid)

I like Oak

always have. Never thought his contract was bad. Maybe a tight fit on that roster we had, but you are gonna pay some money for a Center that averages a double double. Im fine with that.
I just think that he got drafted into a bad situation. went from a winning team where he showed a ton of passion. then got drafted by an expansion franchise with 0 chance of winning a title. I mean thats a tough deal. At least he came to work ya know. Maybe he didnt rip the rim off every dunk or play with a smile, but he came and did his job. Its hard for someone thats a champion to play on a scrub team.
I think you put Okafor on a team with the ability to go the distance and you’ll never regret a dime. thats just my hunch.

even if he doesnt, you know you are still gonna get the 15 and 10, and if the team shapes up like we think it can… thats more than enough production from the Center.

The difference in Okafor Round 1 and possible Okafor Round 2...

…is that there is an athletic PF named Tyrus Thomas that will be playing beside him. Okafor can be Okafor, and all he has to do is look for Tyrus for the flush. Okafor always had the uncanny ability to get his shot stuffed. Now he can make a head fake…drop the ball to Tyrus, and T Time will take care of the rest.
Okafor Round 2 will flourish.

by andrewlail76 on Jul 27, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

precisely

not that Okafor ever really demands a double, but I mean he will be completely free to do what he does when the whole talent level around has risen.
Okafor is never gonna be Dwight Howard. but hes also never gonna be a gaping hole at his position. You know what you are gonna get.

I like the idea of getting the original Bobcat back just in time to be a contender.

by Mustachio on Jul 27, 2010 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

fun fact

At the beginning of the season a certain person made an Okafor vs Chandler game by game fanpost. It was really stupid. I almost made a game by game Stephen Jackson vs Raja Bell fanpost to mock said person. If you do not get the humor, at that time Bell was out for the season

There's a great post on "at the hive"

where the author’s defending Okafor. Guess what his defense is? Okafor is a slightly above average center. Which is true, but come on. After what was said when he was traded you’d think he was Michael Jordan.
