D.J. Augustin and Matt Moore

At my day gig, I've written a fantasy football preview for the Carolina Panthers. (It's behind a pay wall, but if you've got a subscription to SN's Fantasy Source Football, it's here.) I landed that assignment because, though I'm a 49ers fan, it's impossible to escape the Panthers here, so I keep up with them, reading Cat Scratch Reader and several other sources regularly. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I'm among the biggest Jimmy Clausen proponents out there and was downright angry when the Niners didn't draft him, but anyway...

To me, there's one clear parallel between the two franchises: Matt Moore is to the Panthers as D.J. Augustin is to the Bobcats.

Star-divide

  • Augustin has been fine to good when he's played, but toiled the last two seasons behind a polarizing incumbent, just like Moore.
  • He'll likely (I know: wait for it...) be trusted to run the offense for a very conservative coach who wants him to merely facilitate the grunt work and finishing of other players, and occasionally launch a long ball.
  • If he doesn't work out, it'll deal a major blow to his team's playoff hopes, and force them to decide whether they're playing for next year at that oh-so-important position or go scrambling for a savior.

Do you see any other parallels between NFL and NBA players?

How about the fact that the team acquired a potential replacement in the offseason? Those being Livingston and Clausen.

Augustin was the ninth pick in the NBA draft

Moore was undrafted and picked up off of Dallas’ practice squad.

Plus Moore’s play on the field has been FAR more consistent and superior to anything DJ has done on the court in Charlotte.

Augustin reminds me much more of Tishmonga Biakibituka — A highly regarded, highly drafted prospect that shows some flashes of great potential early, but lacks both the good fortune and work ethic that it takes to be a star in the pros.

Moore could be more like Gerald Wallace – An under the radar, good guy, under-appreciated by another team and willing to wait and put in his time to get better. Both consummate professionals, Moore, like Wallace, is proving to hometown fans that he has what it takes to be the man. But acclaim from the national media is much harder to come by, particularly when so many of them are enamored with the media-sexy (but completely green and unproven) Jimmy Clausen.

I predict Moore will be in the pro-bowl by the time he’s 28. DJ will be a back up PG in another city and all but forgotten.

I was skeptical as to how this comparison could be made

but you actually make a compelling argument Arontt.

The most glaring difference between the two is that Moore is just coming off of his promising seasone, and he is therefor still held in high regard. D.J., on the other hand, just laid an 82 game stinker.

I think I'd compare him(sorry gotta toss a Niners reference)

to Glenn Coffee. Stood in admirably, but really hasn’t shown us anything too much to be stoked about.

The way Moore ended the season last year, Panther fans have plenty to be excited about. And Claussen is no Livingston either.

Moore was a happy accident, Deej was the plan for the future

If Jake Delhomme never melts down we likely never see Matt Moore outside of his few starts in 2007. He was the 3rd string QB last season who fell into the starting job by circumstance and showed that he was able to take the reigns. In a way I liken him more to Nazr Mohammad (albeit much younger) than Augustin in terms of guys who made the most of what they had when opportunites presented themselves.

DJ Augustin = Mike Goodsen???

In that early on he displayed signs of brilliance and huge potential. But when it counted the most, he cracked under pressure… losing the confidence of many. Yet will get one more chance to prove himself.

I wouldn’t call Felton a polarizing incumbent. He did what Brown asked him to do, he facilitated the offense and took control when he needed to. At least Augustin did get the chance to play, Moore was never given any real chance unless Pick6 was injured. I also have a lot more faith in Moore leading the Panthers offense than Augustin leading the Cats, but basketball is so much different because you have to play defense too and that’s where I feel Augustin will struggle.

Felton is more like Delhomme, than DJ is Moore

At least Felton and Delhomme both have been great at times and horrible at times. And both loved and hated.

I don't see the correlation at all

This was the only similarity (which btw I found quite amusing)…

He’ll likely (I know: wait for it…) be trusted to run the offense for a very conservative coach who wants him to merely facilitate the grunt work and finishing of other players, and occasionally launch a long ball

Other than that, Moore has actually led the team and in doing so during that period, emerged as one of the NFL’s top QBs. Moore has never played and gone through a slump like DJ did. Both may suffer the same positive or negative fate, but other that I don’t see it.

I wanted to try and compare Wallace and Jackson to either Steve Smith or DeAngello Williams

But it just didn’t quite add up. Smitty and DWill are 2 of the best in the league at their positions. I can’t quite say the same about anyone on the Bobcats team. But who is Wallace’s NFL equivalent? An athletic, dynamic player that is AllStar worthy, but not a SuperStar… Maybe a DeSean Jackson?

Andre Johnson

not necessarily a household name unless you play fantasy football. the same goes for Wallace really. IMO

naw

andre is the best at his position in the nfl… wallace isn’t

i’d say he’s more like donald driver… always flying under the radar but always putting up well above average numbers with an occasional pro-bowl (all star game)

here's a pointer though-

Use correct grammar and punctuation as often as possible ;)

yes I realize that now

While I am quite capable of using punctuation, in my haste on blogs I usually revert back to my “forum vernacular” … something I will work in.

I always take a blog

When commenting, I agree with you 100%

However, I think if someone wants to be taken seriously in an article or fanpost correct spelling and grammar are of the utmost importance.

Gerald Wallace = Nmandi Asomugha

Both excel on defense, are underrated, and led bad teams that had a lot of heart but not enough talent
