A Jeremy Lin endorsement; and a clarification on trading Dampier

I love Jeremy Lin. Yes, I know Summer League performance means next to nothing (see: Marco Belinelli), but the guy is playing point guard, blocking shots, getting steals, throwing down in traffic, and generally out-athleticizing everyone but the most elite prospects in Vegas. I can easily see him signing for more than the minimum, because at this point, he has to be regarded as a fabulously rich man's Dontell Jefferson, or, alternatively, the destitute man's Devin Harris.

The Official Father of Rufus on Fire claims that the best high school player he ever saw in person was Leon Powe, but has also said that Lin was insanely impressive, too. And yes, I know that my dad's high school scouting report is no reason to bring a guy in for an NBA tryout, but he's a big point guard who can swing to the off guard, which is a Larry Brown prerequisite for at least one of his guards, and, more important, he's been underestimated since high school (he was Drew Gordon's teammate) (Not true... my bad on misremembering and not checking), which is a background that leads to the kind of character LB -- and I -- like at the end of the rotation and bench: guys who have never felt entitled to anything.

Is there anyone else you've seen in Summer League who has surprised you?

Star-divide

Just to clarify, since I'm reading a couple places where people are making too big a deal about this, the restrictions on trading Erick Dampier are public knowledge, and they're hardly limiting. We went over this when Stephen Jackson came and everyone half thought he would be flipped for magic beans.

The go-to source for all things NBA CBA is Larry Coon's Salary Cap FAQ and the relevant passage is issue 88.

[A team cannot trade a player] for two months after receiving the player in trade or claiming him off waivers, if the player is being traded in combination with other players. However, the team is free to trade the player by himself (not packaged with other players) immediately. This restriction applies only to teams over the salary cap.

The upshot, of course, is that they can make an effective package trade by moving Dampier by himself and the other pieces in a second, separate deal. This means we can't trade Dampier and another player for one other guy. (That guy would have a monster contract, since we're pretty much talking about Dampier's $13 million cap number plus, say, D.J. Augustin's $2.5 million.) But if there's a CBA-matching asset or assets out there (and there are a lot), Dampier can be traded in one deal and then other pieces can come in a separate deal to "even everything out".

This likely would have happened anyway, because of the nature of NBA contracts' value, and it just ends up being so much paper shuffling. So, for instance, if  the San Antonio Spurs wanted to trade us Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, we would do Dampier for Parker and then, separately, trade Nazr Mohammed and Boris Diaw for Duncan.

Draft picks, cash considerations, or trade exception money

The passage above does not say anything about draft picks, cash considerations, or trade exception money. However, it does say “trade the player by himself”. It is not clear if we can package Dampier with other things, for instance a Cheerwine Doughnut.

Also we could make one trade that would temporarily put us under the salary cap and then make a Dampier package deal trade. Getting under the salary cap could be hard. Maybe Diaw & Nazr for a few first round draft picks and then trade those draft picks back?

Good clarification. Well done.

David, can we hire your dad to head up the Bobcat's scouting department.

At this point I would take Leon Powe and Jlin over Sean May and Ammo.

who wouldnt hell...

ill take a kfc double down over ammo… but its irrelvant discussing other people eating kfc in a room with sean may as it becomes his kfc

Things that haven't surprised me in the summer league

Reggie Williams is a beast. I called that shizzle. He’s so underrated. As I told my friend, “He’s so far off the radar, they need sonar to detect him”

Like the idea of BPA

My contention going into summer league was the Cats should grab the best PG available, whoever that is. Collins did not impress me, so in Lin is that guy sign him.

I've been wanting to see Lin get a shot ever since I read this story

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=oneil_dana&id=4730385

He’s probably a D-league prospect who’d make more money over seas. But for a team looking for cheap pgs, it can’t hurt to invite this guy to camp. I like him more than Sheron Collins.

+1

Im all for giving a fellow azn guy a shot, plus he looks very impressive.

LB likes PG's who have length and can distribute

We’re certain to need another 1 on this team, even if we make a trade for a clear starter (by giving up DJ).

Hence why they didnt resign Felton

because he doesnt have either of those skills

tick tock tick tock

Times winding down. Looks like “the trade” isn’t happening. Guess they’ll have to shoot for a later plan, or roll with Dampier/Livingston.

Larry Brown loves molding teams remember last year we didnt get Jax until like 20 games into the season. My point is that if a trade dosent go down tonight does not mean this is our Roster. Many trades our yet to come believe me.

A trade was made 20 games into the season because we were sucking

I’m hoping this year we don’t start the season in such a way that we need a desperation move 20 games in.

this is not the last opportunity to make a trade. when their is a chance to make our team better Larry Brown will make a trade. Its just crazy to think if this trade does not happen then were stuck with who we have now. There are always players being shopped and there is always other oppurtunities to make trades.

looks like he's getting several offers

Mavs, Lakers, and an unnamed Eastern Conference team on an ESPN article. It was front page on the NBA page last time I looked. He does look good.

On a Summer league not, I’m just stoked that Ish Smith is getting invited to join the Rockets training camp as a 3rd PG. Look at his stats in the Summer League games. Somewhere around 8 points and 7 assists in 25 minutes a game. I was even happier to hear some of the Rocket fans(not too many, but still) say that he was the best passer they had ever seen in Summer League, ever. They like his speed, court vision, and game management. If he can develop a decent jumpshot, he could be a decent NBA PG. There are also questions about his defense, but he is an undersized guard, so it would take a good system for him to work as a starter for any length of time. Unless he just happens to learn how to play good defense at some point (If you’ve watched the Demon Deacons the last several years you know that hasn’t been the forte of the coaching staff, so maybe he can still learn).

Anyway, you can see I’m obviously excited about seeing Ish playing in the NBA.

Dampier and Cats

Dampier said he would entertain signing with the Cats if we cut him. What kind of money do you think he would be demanding?

by Bring Back Primoz on Jul 17, 2010 12:35 PM EDT reply actions

im not sure about that....

Boozer told Cavs the same thing and once released from his contract he bolted for a better team and more $ in Utah.

Dampier wont get more cash….. but if we release him I really dont see him signing with anyone else other than the heat/boston/lakers he wants a ring badly and would take less $ and less of a role to do so he is getting up their in age… this is just my opinion though.

if a team had cp3 melo capt jax etc to look like a comparable contender then that might change.

his fav coach is LB so we do got that going for us, but without at least some better moves theres no way here resigns here i think.

by Supenusenfone on Jul 17, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

You can't definitively say that he wants a ring so bad he'll sign a shit contract to get one

A lot of players sign the best contract they can get.

Yea it’s plausible that he wants to get on a contender, but what reports do we have that those teams are his first choice.

Regardless, I think he’ll want too much money for the Cats to resign him (assuming he’s not traded)

by and1droid on Jul 19, 2010 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

He's getting very old by NBA standards

But he’s still good for a handfull of points and 6 or 7 boards a game.
SIgning him after the salary dump isn’t our best option, but he’d get some minutes and contribute off the bench if that’s our last alternative. I’m not saying I want to do that, by any stretch. But we have worse sitting on our bench right now.

My sources can beat up your sources

by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 18, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed, he would be better than Diop at least but I think would cost too much...

As for what Damp may command as far as money next season, here is a comparison to Brad Miller

G, GS, MPG, FG%, 3P%, FT%, OFF, DEF, RPG, APG, SPG, BPG, TO, PF, PPG
Damp 55, 47, 23.3, 0.624, 0.333, 0.604, 2.3, 4.9, 7.3, 0.6, 0.3, 1.4, 1.11, 2.78, 6
Brad 82, 37, 23.8, 0.43, 0.28, 0.827, 1.0, 3.9, 4.9, 1.9, 0.5, 0.4, 1.3, 2.3, 8.8

Played similar minutes per game. Obviously Brad is more offensively oriented v’s Damp being defensively oriented. I think they match up pretty well so if Brad Miller gets 3 years at 15 mil, then Damp could get just as much.

We're better off forcing Diop off the bench

They guys has enough size to play. LB just needs to whip him into shape.

by and1droid on Jul 19, 2010 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

true, if nothing to get some value out of the money we have to pay him

but his body of work since being traded isn’t filling me with the hope that we can rely on him. Hopefully he reads this, gets motovated and proves everyone wrong.

by Warmec on Jul 19, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Except for FT shooting Diop isn't horrible

Not great or very good either. He’s a serviceable Center who can alter shots on defense and actually play pretty good D when he is in shape and thus not fouling everyone.

Two years ago we gave up on Nazr. Last season he came back and played pretty solid for the first half of the year. In the right system Diop can be a tolerable back-up.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Jul 19, 2010 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I've seen competence from Diop, I agree.

But watching him you can tell how Shaq will play at age 50… with weights strapped to his legs… underwater.

My sources can beat up your sources

by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 19, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I will say this...

In all honsety…before last season…we were ripping Nazr apart. I know I was…I often asked why we didn’t dump him…why was he on the floor…. Little did we know just how pissed off Nazr was for having to sit on the bench and not playing any. Am I saying that Diop will be the next Nazr and show glimpses of an NBA caliber player? Who knows…he may be the bust that he was since we got him, or maybe he’s been “trying” to improve his game. Now…there have been no articles or notes about him doing ANYTHING this off season…and that’s probably not a good thing. I mean we’ve seen that Jax has gone from 240 to 225…that’s encouraging…We have See that DJ went with him to Orlando to work out…that is encouraging. We started to hear before this past season started that Nazr was workig out a bunch to prove that he could still play…

All of this said…
Will Diop be a standout next season…I doubt it
Will Diop be able to play next season…maybe
Will Diop be a s Nazr was at the start of last season…we can only hope.

Has anyone heard anything about Diop during the off season?

I guess I’m just saying that we always base the caliber of our players on the season prior…because that’s all we have.

Nazr improved…

DJ is another victim of this judgement…but we’ve heard he’s working on his game more than ever this off season

Hendo…Victim of circumstance…but we’ve heard he’s working on his game more than ever this off season, and we could see that in Summer league and I bet it will continue

Diop…Time will tell
