Who's in charge of the Bobcats' personnel decisions right now?

Thank you, James the Aussie, for this comment:

Riddle me this:

If the two reasons cited for the Raptors/Bobcats trade to be killed were:
- Larry Brown didn’t want to give up Chandler
- Larry Brown didn’t like the idea of a defensively weak PG (Calderon)

Then how do you get his blessing to give up Tyson Chandler and Alexis Ajinca, leaving him decimated at center so Jordan can save a buck?

I don't know. They've got to be looking at trading Dampier for a PG or a C, and if they can't they'll just buy him out and take the savings.

Why would any team trade a star player for cap space, when they can simply trade that star player for draft picks (and thusly cap space and a fresh start) instead?

Dampier’s contract seems worthless to me.

by adamcawa on Jul 13, 2010 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

We're not done yet.

Dampier has the most valuable contract in the league right now. Getting it is what made this a fair trade. Chandler is obviously the most talented of the bunch, but Carrol and Najera can both fill roles on the team as 3 point specialist off the bench. Dampier’s contract will be shipped off for a PG and C. Possibly Dampier + Nazr for Gilbert Arenas + Andray Blatche.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:17 PM EDT reply actions

I guess

People keep saying that the Dampier contract is incredibly valuable and will bring in a boatload of assets, but the best that Dallas could get for it was Tyson Chandler. If they weren’t able to turn it into much, then how are the Bobcats going to have more luck?

by morestuff on Jul 13, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The Mavericks were almost able to get Jefferson with it.

Utah was the only team that could put a better deal out there because they could absorb his contract for nothing. Don’t think they got a bad deal out of this. We’re taking on Carrol and Najera’s deals. They are getting a player that they actually need and is still 13 million off the cap. Tyson was very valuable.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Correction... Dallas as able to get Jefferson with it

The Wolves were ready to make he trade for Dampier straight up, but Dallas insisted that Najera and Carroll were included, which killed the deal.

Well, there ya go.

That shows that Dampier’s contract still has enough value. Like I said, we’re doing Dallas a huge favor in taking Carrol and Najera off of their books. The thing about them though is they actually fill a void on our team. Dampier’s contract was the key prize in this deal. Not Chandler.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

True.

Now we need to find the perfect trade to dump Dampier. Coming soom I am sure.
No way we cut that valuable contract.

they would have to if

this deal falls through and it turns out that MJ did in fact kill any relations he had with other owners.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright... I just got off the phone with my guy who is leaving TWC after working 28 of the last 48 hrs

We had a long conversation and much of it was very vague, because either he couldn’t tell me, or he’s not really sure.

So, here’s what I know:
- The Calderon trade is not dead. There is still a possibility he will be a Charlotte Bobcat, but relations are very strained between Charlotte and Toronto. He doesn’t know for sure, but he suspects that Toronto was going to use Chandler to pull the exact same trade with Dallas tomorrow using some of their trade exception to get Dampier, Carroll and Najera. They wanted to cut more cap space and the Bobcats got wind of it, killing the trade and beating them to the punch- Toronto are not happy about this. Again, this is his personal speculation.

- There is a greater trade in the works, but today’s deal gives them more options. The Bobcats needed some of Toronto’s trade exception to pull the deal off, now they figure they can force the issue with Toronto as they have all the pieces the Raptor’s wanted, or work the deal independent of anything with Toronto due to Dampier’s deal.

- Going through the Raptors is not 100% neccesary for this deal to take place, but he no longer has any clue who this deal involves. He said that ‘the number crunchers are in Charlotte and the decision makers are in Las Vegas’.

- The Bobcats have 60 days to cut or trade Dampier.

- MJ, Larry Brown and Rod Higgins are all working together on these roster moves, but MJ and LB seem to be the only one’s really signing off on anything, Higgins appears to be fetching deals.

- He told me he ‘honestly doesn’t know’ if Chris Paul is a target, but those were the water cooler grumblings at TWC today.

- Deals we’re seeing in the day are the product of meetings in Vegas during the night. We’ll keep seeing stuff throughout the day, but most of that will be smokescreens for what we see in the afternoon.

- If everything falls through with all of the trades then Dampier will be cut. He is the safety valve where the Bobcats can still wheel and deal but get close to the cap if the house of cards falls down.

- He reiterated that the team still want an elite PG and an elite C, but the chances of getting both appear slim.

- Everything is going well, and this Dampier trade was not a desperation move on Charlotte’s behalf. It was rushed through the league office to ensure the Bobcats had everything in place to resume negotiations tonight knowing exactly what pieces they have to trade.

James

youve saved me from a heart attack…. slightly…

i seriously am confused by this week in the FO. i could see there being more moves down the pipeline, but to me it would be all fantasy.

my guesses/speculations are this:
the team will go after a PG before a C, and among the PGs we may be looking at, here are my top 3 guesses (in no specific order)
Chris Paul
Gilbert Arenas
Jose Calderon

the most likely of the three seems to be Calderon, but with Damps’ contract, i could see a massive push for CP3 happening. that very well may be the target, but i always hold my doubts of it actually happening.
it does seem like this is just the quiet before the storm though… lets hope we’re right.

it also appears that Ourday is our other spout of info for the next 24 hours

by StudMuffin15 on Jul 13, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

If we are going after CP3 of Arenas then why would we need the Raptors for anything? or if we do get Calderon what Big man would we the go after?

by Bcat2.0 on Jul 13, 2010 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

the Robin Lopez speculation is interesting

and i would assume that Toronto would give him up to save cap space. maybe then we can give them Diaw while possibly sending Damps contract to Washington. also, Washington may give Toronto a PG.
not sure how everything would work, but thats my rough draft of a possibility. maybe Calderon also goes to Washington.

Salting the earth:
The Hornets are parted ways with general manager Jeff Bower, according to team sources.

It appears to have been a mutual decision.

For those following, Bower was the only man who said there was ‘no way’ they would trade Chris Paul. Perhaps he got word they’re trading him and decided to leave?

How this could work:

Keep in mind that this is not a 4 team trade, just adjusted to 4 because the machine isn’t updated and realgm’s trade checker doesn’t include Dampier’s contract provisions.

Also, this nugget emerged:
Blazers have been involved in trade talks with teams since the start of June and that has not stopped, even after Matthews offer.
Blazers are operating under the assumption that Matthews will be retained by Jazz. Portland has a Plan B in place if that happens.

Perhaps Greg Oden and Jerryd Bayless to Charlotte for Dampier and something?

That would allow Portland to reduce their payroll significantly

Wow... this from Hoopsworld via twitter (it should be noted that they've been really on top of this)
With Bower gone, all bets are off regarding Chris Paul. Earlier in the week, there was no chance of Paul getting dealt. Now? Not so sure.

Let’s put our conspiracy theory hats on, shall we?

What if the Bobcats found out Bower was going to be leaving? The only other teams that could offer a better trade package for Chris Paul are Portland (who now have their money tied up in an offer sheet) and Dallas (who no longer have Dampier’s deal, which gave them the edge).

The opportunity is there to make this happen with Dampier, Nazr and Hendo for Paul and Okafor… let’s see what happens

Let me add that if Charlotte knew the news would break about Bower at 5 p.m. CDT then it was imperative to push Dallas’ deal through ASAP, because surely they would back out with the deal with Charlotte if they thought Paul was attainable.

Diop too if they want him

They wouldn't take Diop... neither with McGuire

Here is the only way I see this going down, and add a 1st rounder to New Orleans:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=264jrua

The only way you could possibly ever sell the fan base on this deal is talking up ‘how you shed salary cap while getting two former first round picks and a 1st rounder’.

Carroll serves as the off bench replacement for Henderson
Okafor and Diop are the centers

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

I just heard an absolutely INSANE trade rumor... absolutely, wildly, intensely INSANE

From another friend in New York, doesn’t work for the Bobcats but has his finger on the pulse of the NBA.

I don’t want to say anything in case this doesn’t come true… so I will tell you this much:

This deal he heard about through an ‘unnamed league source’ would require us trading Gerald Wallace but I assume you, the payoff would make the Bobcats be relevant and in title contention.

He told me this deal would be ‘damn near impossible’ to happen, but he said that his source tells his it has been mentioned in Las Vegas, and was not shot down immediately. If this is step four, then I tell you I got goosebumps when I heard and will tell everyone later in the week if it doesn’t happen.

I can't give specifics. James and I have almost identical information.

Our contacts differ in only minor areas involve one small part of stage 3. He has a minor player and I have “cash or trade considerations”

Keeping my mouth shut is killing me.

Jordan’s ego is a MAJOR factor. If this happens it will be because of it. If it crashes it will be because he reached too far too fast and stepped on too many toes to do it.

Yes... Jordan has really pissed off some people in NBA circles

just to ask

if you or James know, is there any kind of backup plan in case “the big one” fails, or is it save salary cap at that point?

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

Cutting Dampier and getting as close to the cap as possible will be the backup plan.

Possibly a player or two moving, but nothing has been discussed

I don't know

at that point, using Damp’s contract with Diaw’s would be about the only way to get rid of him. And not many teams would buy it.

And maybe talk of everyone wanting him gone could be that motivation he’s been missing. Either that or he’ll just be pissed and not want to play anymore.

More or less

Jordan is a gambling man, and I like his gamble.

Even if it backfires I tip my hand that he’s trying for this one.

Speaking of the 5 Bucks Box

Is Bogut going to be OK next season. I don’t like Milwaukee competing with us for playoff seeding.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think the injury he had

would slow him down, but he is somewhat injury prone. He has had back spasms a number of times that has kept him out a number of games. Plus with the couple of signings they had already, I think they are at least a 5-6 seed in the east right now.

If we still want Calderon, Toronto will trade him heads up for Diaw

This trade for Chandler netted:

Pluses: a valuable non-guaranteed 13 million contract and a dump of Ajinca
Minuses: a bad Matt Carroll contract.
Neutral: an OK PF with an OK contract

The Toronto trade would have netted:

Pluses: a less valuable 5 million expiring contract
Minuses: a D-league scrub with a small contract

I think we got a better deal from Dallas. This is probably why MJ pulled the Toronto deal. Again we can still trade Diaw for Calderon if we want him. We can also trade the non-guaranteed Dampier contract for a number of players around the NBA.

This was a good trade and only step one. Najera will be a good back-up for Tyrus. Remember last year when we had Diaw and no back-up. Diaw will still be traded. Dampier is fodder for a blockbuster trade. With these two, we will pick up a coveted Center and PG, and may even dump Nazr’s expiring contract in the process.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know if they would make that trade

at least not straight up. I think they originally wanted Calderon plus a trade exception, but Toronto wasn’t willing to give it up, only an almost bench player that would have meant getting nothing for Chandler basically. Calderon for Diaw sould be a good trade. Charlotte gets the PG they need, Toronto gets one less year of a bad contract, and a player that can play in a frontcourt that basically consists entirely of Bargnani now. Maybe that could be a possibility if nothing else happens, but it sounds like Toronto wouldn’t go for it for some reason.

On the potential Toronto deal that didn’t happen
We had conversations with Toronto – no secret there. At the end of the day, we didn’t come to a deal. It’s one of those things that happen in this business all the time. A lot of times you don’t hear about it, but those things happen all the time.

Like everyone else here, I have no clue what James or Ourday are talking about, but here's some guesses...

If we are really going to be losing many many future 1st round picks and G Wallace and this thing is just going to be the blockbuster trade of the century, I really don’t think that there are that many guys who fit this bill. Here’s a couple of guesses who would require this and make us instant contenders:

Dwight Howard
Chris Paul
Kobe Bryant
Kevin Durant
Deron Williams
Al Jefferson
Brandon Roy
Danny Granger
Dirk Nowitzki
Pau Gasol
Kevin Garnett

I mean who else in this league is that elite that would cost us that much and instantly make us a contender?? Who do ya’ll think this prospective trade includes??
