Chandler-Ajinca to Dallas for Dampier-Najera-MATT CARROLL!!!

Woj drops the bombshell on Twitter.

I don't get it. This would leave the Bobcats with a shaky point guard situation and Boris Diaw as the number one center option. Really?

The only way this works for us is if we have a deal in place to flip Erick Dampier for other assets, because Dampier's deal can be bought out. And if we're stuck with Matt Carroll and Eduardo Najera for the next three and two years, respectively... Again, I just don't get it.

If they're just trying to save several million dollars by buying out Dampier instead of cutting salary by taking Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans, then that's kind of silly, because Calderon and Evans would bring real performance value to the team.

UPDATE: Dampier is likely to be waived, as it's an unguaranteed contract. Now, I'm a little confused as to how this affects our cap situation, because I'm not seeing where anyone's getting that $45 million number that's being thrown around...

1 -- The cap will be about $58 million.

2 -- Going into today, we had roughly $66 million committed to payroll (remember, Tyrus Thomas is getting paid $12.5 million this year, and Dominic McGuire is going to get roughly $1 million).

3 -- Take away Chandler's $12.6 million and Ajinca's $1.4 million, and add back Carroll and Najera's salaries, $7.3 million, and we're at roughly $59 million.

If your math is different, please enlighten me on how this helps the Bobcats pull off a subsequent trade and isn't simply a cost-saving measure after management balked at taking on Calderon and his trade-kicker-laden contract.

UPDATE 2: It's done. We went from getting a PG for Chandler-Diaw to trading Chandler for salary relief to keep us out of the luxury tax zone as we attempt to shore up the bench. Dig up your Matt Carroll jerseys, folks. He'll be sitting on our bench for the next two years.

If Woj is correct and the Bobcats waive or buyout Dampier...

They now have one of the best salary situations in the NBA at $45.5 million TOTAL

That’s enough to absorb $12.5 million more than they give out via trade… wait for it

I know as much as you do...

All I know is that the only reason the Mavericks didn’t trade Dampier to Minnesota for Al Jefferson was because they were holding out hope to land Chris Paul.

I don’t understand why they would trade Dampier for Tyson Chandler… it doesn’t make any sense for a mere cap dump on Najera and Carroll.

Honestly, I could postulate that perhaps the plan all along was for New Orleans to move Paul, but to make sure they did so to the Eastern conference, but that is absolute speculation

Yes, including Thomas at $12.5 million for this year

If they buy out Dampier entirely… which seems far fetched.

David, do you see any reason Dallas would give up their most coveted contract?

You're right

I was going off ‘hoopshype’ and their numbers are way off… crap…

I don’t understand this at all. We’re now way over the cap, and if we waive Dampier we have no center, and didn’t get a PG.

Okay... so here is the complete salary situation as I see it:

Currently the Bobcats are on the hook for $79 million (including the players we just traded for).

We can cut Dampier immediately and cut that figure down to $66 million (his contract is no guaranteed).

So, even as a salary dump it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, as the Bobcats are still $7-8 million over the cap.

Because his deal isn’t guaranteed he can be traded to any team and cut immediately. It’s like having an expiring contract that you never need to pay.

From Rod Higgins:

“Our main goal this offseason was finding a way to reshape this roster and continue the momentum we have established,” Higgins said. “While it’s always difficult to give up key pieces of your team, we believe this deal will give financial flexibility and the ability to improve our team at the same time.”

I want give up hope yet!

Given what you stated about Dampier’s contract: that he can be waived and dump salary etc., It could be said that Dampier’s contract is more valuable as a money saver than Tyson Chandler’s.

I’m hoping that Dampier will be traded as part of a bigger deal to get…wait for it….Chris Paul and Okafor.

http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=5614511

(in the above trade subsitute Chandler for Dampier. their salaries are close enough to work)

Charlotte gets Paul and Okafor
NO gets Dampier, Nazr, Augustin & Henderson

NO gets something for Paul, Dumps Okafor’s contract, waives Dampier and dumps his salary too. Nazr is an expiring. They get DJ too compete with Collison and they get a young talent they covet in Henderson inked cheap.

Call me an eternal optimist, but isn't this just what the Bobcats would want us to think?

Media sources and the fan base are chalking this up as “Stupid Jordan’s at it again… what an idiot!”

The reality is that Charlotte have the ‘dust chip’, the most important contract in the NBA right now because it’s tradeable… and it’s nothing…

For me, there is too much information that I have been presented with, fed and reading between the lines to believe a cap dump was the plan all along. Ourday was told possibly finalized Wednesday as part of a 4 part deal, I was told a 4 part deal possibly finalized by the end of the week… I don’t know what this all means, but I can’t imagine Charlotte will give up Dampier’s contract for nothing

Ummm

So now we have three bad contracts instead of just one. Aren’t McGuire and Najera pretty similar as an undersized power forward? Why include both Carroll and Najera to use the trade exception?

My guess is that Diaw and Dampier are gone. Hopefully we can get something good in return via trade or free agent signing. Najera, Brown, and McGuire are our backup forwards. I guess all three can play both forward spots, but not exactly at a high level.

We still need a PG and now a backup/starting Center. No PG available via free agency (that at least make us a better team) so we will have to trade Diaw and/or Dampier to get one. And we will probably have to sign a Center and a third PG (maybe S Collins).

So if I were to guess: Trade for Ramon Sessions, sign Shaq and Collins

Lopez

looks like a potential all-defensive team center with a not terrible offense added in. And I’d like to see if anyone has even tried to teach Calderon to play defense. The rest of his game is good.
weighed against a solid center that can’t actually guard a center, and a superstar PG that is one of a kind and would instantly make the team better.

It’s hard to imagine Phoenix giving up Lopez, and most people seem to see that NO is asking too much for Paul right now. Hard to imagine either trade happening right now, but Paul is one of a kind, and he came from my favorite Demon Deacons, so I’d want him first.

Question

Would this be the first time Mark Cuban has ever done a a trade to save money rather than trying to make the team better? They just resigned Dirk, and have a core of aging players. Is Cuban perhaps giving up on winning a ring with Dirk?

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
I also blog the Panthers at Real Bits of Panthers

by James The Aussie on Jul 13, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

that's what I'm saying

Cuban has always had the “win now and in the future because I have the money to make it work” mentality. I can’t imagine him doing this trade because it’s pretty much a straight salary dump for his team, and maybe even hurts the team a bit, giving up the best bargaining chip for it. It certainly doesn’t make the team any better, Chandler pretty much =Dampier. Both are good defenders that can’t score, wont be on the floor more than 25 mins a game, and both will likely miss at least 15 games. Chandler’s D is a bit better and Damp’s O is a bit better. So, Dallas doesn’t get better by the trade, they’re still well over the cap, and though they would still have one of the best expiring contracts with Chandler’s, it still isn’t anywhere near as good as the non-guaranteed one with Dampier’s.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

He got two expiring contracts and shored up front line help with Chandler’s defense. Dirk is more than enough front court offense and Haywood is starting for that team anyways.

by mjschaefer on Jul 13, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

don't really agree

I gave Chandler’s defense a slight edge, but Dampier is better against the bigger guys as he just wont be pushed around at all. Chandler is underweight for a 7 footer and can be pushed around by some of the better centers in the league. I still like Chandler overall on defense, but not by that much. Plus, Dampier was still the starter most nights if he was healthy enough (no matter how much better Haywood looked and fit into the Mavs style).

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Chandler is also more versatile so he can probably be used at the back-up PF spot as well. I think Cuban saw it as an opportunity to wash his hands of Najera and Carroll by receiving a little help with Chandler. If it’s a salary dump play for the 2011 guys it makes sense. Maybe he’ll go sign Duncan. He loves aging vets.

I just can’t see either Cuban or MJ liking this trade. Unless there’s more to it, another trade in the works or something I’m not seeing.

Also, over on the Mavs site they don’t seem do care that much. They thought they could get more for Dampier’s contract, but they also think that the Mavs FO are absolutely tying Carrol’s contract onto Dampier’s, which is why Minnesota backed out of the Jefferson deal. Which made me wonder if the Wolves would’ve accepted Chandler plus something else(a pick, another expiring, or a young player) for Al Jeff.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

and I forgot

if they had added another expiring like Nazr’s, that would be in line close with Jefferson plus Sessions, who they’re also trying to get rid of. He’s also a young PG that they felt had talent, but didn’t work out. Yeah, I just checked on ESPN’s trade machine and it works. Still a bit of depth issue at center, but wouldn’t that be soooooo much better?

Okay, two questions that I can't work out and I would love good reasons for:

1. If Jordan is trying to be cheap this year then why front load Tyrus Thomas’ extension to the tune of $12.5 million, rather than backload it when Diop and Diaw are off the books?

2. Why push the Dallas trade through with such expediency if you just plan to cut the main piece?

I wish I had an answer to the 2nd question.

That’s the only thing giving me hope.
Otherwise, I’d assume all his other plans have fallen apart and he decided to make this move in a terrible way to save face.

this move

certainly doesnt save face… yet

We could always trade Jack and Wallace for more expiring contracts

I sware MJs been taking notes from Jerry Richardson this summer. No draft picks and a bunch of new career backups.

I really, really hope there is more to this trade.

I want public opinion on the Bobs to change.
If it doesn’t, then we are going to be known, per usual, as a terribly run organization and MJ is incompetent.

While public opinion isn’t really that important, I’d like to see some love go the Bobcats way for once.

i have 2 seats

in the second level, front section, one section off center court, in the second row, two end seats (the end closer to center court)… i bought them during the playoffs when they had the buy one get one sale

seriously, talk to me right around the start of september and we’ll see where it goes (i could use the extra cash, esp. if it won’t be worth it to watch the bobcats)

Just received from my ESPN mobile alert

Mavs acquire C Tyson Chandler from Bobcats for C Erick Dampier, F Eduardo Najera in 5-player trade

…no Caroll? Or is he one of the other 2 players?

Riddle me this:

If the two reasons cited for the Raptors/Bobcats trade to be killed were:
- Larry Brown didn’t want to give up Chandler
- Larry Brown didn’t like the idea of a defensively weak PG (Calderon)

Then how do you get his blessing to give up Chandler and Ajinca leaving him decimated at center so Jordan can save a buck?

Just so I'm clear:

The common belief then is that MJ would be willing to piss off his head coach and sacrifice the new found success of his franchise to save some money in 2010?

I’m just not buying it.. any of it

That's why I don't believe Larry Brown was the reason the last deal didn't get passed.

I honestly hope this isn’t all there is.
I’m just worried that MJ couldn’t get any of his plans done, so rather than sit on his hands, he did this atrocity of move.

However, all the points you bring up are valid, and give me hope for future plans.

It’s only Tuesday… so if everything remains the same by Friday I’ll be ready to throw my hands up and say ‘Double you tee eff’

We’re not at the finish line yet. There’s not enough nearly logic in what we know so far for this to be the end game.

I think Jordan is far to competitive to be the type of owner that just wants to save money. I think he is down to make moves to make us a contender

Dampier's contract is more valuable than Chandler's.

I bet that we ship his contract off somewhere else, either for talent, or as a way to get rid of Diop and/or Diaw.

GSO

by MikeTrain on Jul 13, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

How so?

He’s better than D.J., Raymond Felton, and Jose Calderon. Don’t let the media influence you so much. The guy can still ball.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, for our team.

For any team. The only thing that makes Gilbert bad is he caught a gun charge and makes a lot of money. Other than that, the guy is still a certified baller. I don’t understand how an upgrade in talent can’t be a good thing.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

he's not

a great defender, he’s not bad either, though certainly better than Calderon. Also, he operates in an uptempo style, and that definitely isn’t happening anytime soon in Charlotte. LB’s system works best with a pass first PG as well, and Arenas is not in danger of being called that.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course it works better with a pass first PG,

but Gilbert can easily become that if he needed to. He’s never had a coach ask him to fall back. Flip Saunders always encouraged him to take over. Just because he hasn’t had to do it doesn’t mean he can’t.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he can

some players just have a score first mentality, and that’s what Arenas has. I’m not saying I don’t like his game though. When he’s healthy, he’s likely a top 5ish PG in the league, and definitely one of the better scorers. But I don’t think he’d fit in well, and could ultimately cause more problems than he could help the team.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

In all of this no one mentioned that he's a chemistry disaster.

Arenas and Jax on the same team? I’d be scared for the safety of the young players.

by Aisander D on Jul 13, 2010 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Courtside tickets would be discounted

Fans would put a higher value on the safety of the upper deck.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

And you can't say that he can't work in another system.

Bottom line, if there is talent there, they are going to produce. Gilbert’s all-star status is not the product of some system he’s been running, it’s because he’s a good player.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

yes he would produce

and even if he gets 20 ppg and 7.5 apg, does that necessarily make the team better? You can’t just add in a player’s stats and say that the team is automatically better with him there. Especially when you’re looking at a team with a clearly defined system like the one Larry Brown has set up.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I realize that.

But you have to understand, from my perspective, all I’m hearing is that adding an all-star PG with great offensive skills is bad idea when 1)we don’t have a starting PG, 2)our offense is severely lacking. For all the reasons you’re telling me it can’t work, you’re not thinking of one way where it can. If Gilbert Arenas was signed to a 7 million dollar a year deal and never caught a gun charge, we wouldn’t be having discussions about why he’s such a bad idea.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally, the only thing I hold against trading for Gilbert

are his injury concerns combined with the length of his contract. That’s the only thing that would make me hesitant to deal for him. It’s pish posh to me to think he can’t fit in a certain system.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand what you're saying....

but it just has very little upside to it. A PG with injury problems, a bad contract, and off the court concerns. It really isn’t just the gun charge either. He was up in several guys’ faces and had some teammates pissed at him. Plus with his reputation, you have an all-star that is nothing close to being a fan draw.

Like I said, I like Arenas’s game, and if he can go somewhere and stick and have no more problems the rest of his career, that’s really great. He could even provide a spark to a team wanting to get to the next level. But I still feel like it’s an awfully big risk.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

please don't joke about

getting Arenas. Even if he is an All-Star PG, it just isn’t nearly worth it to have to take on his ego and his off court problems. And I’d be a bit surprised is Monta could be had with nothing other than a good expiring contract, as much as he helps his team.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, one gun charge and he's an egomaniac that can't be controlled?

Gilbert will redeem himself this year, no matter who it’s with. And then, people will be trying to trade for him again. Getting him while his value it at it’s lowest point can turn out to be a steal.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

by MikeTrain on Jul 13, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

He is a great shooting PG.

He’s not pass first, but most of our people can’t create their own shots anyway.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 13, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

you ever listen to an interview with him?

he does have a pretty big ego. He’s been controlled before…..for a while, but then he does something stupid. Plus he’s also one of the bigger injury concerns among NBA point guards. And if his value is at it’s lowest point, then they should be able to find a better way to get him than trading their best expiring for it.

by albesir on Jul 13, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

yes and.....

I don’t expect S Jax will be quiet for too long if the team doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere like GS did. When he got there, the team was bad, but he was quiet for quite a while before he had enough and started causing trouble. I can easily see that happening here as well. And for the most part, Jackson doesn’t sound like he has a terribly big ego in interviews. He just complains a lot when the team sucks and if he wants out, he will find a way to piss off everyone that has ever been a fan of the team to try to get off the team. And plus, the reason it got so bad for Jackson is because GS wouldn’t lower their price for him for a long long time, so nobody wanted to trade for him.

I like Jackson, but I am very wary of his past troubles as well. I don’t think you can say just because he had a good half season hear without making too much noise that he’s never going to make trouble. He could wake up tomorrow and decide he wants out. And then he’ll make trouble until he’s traded or his contract expires.

WTF IS GOING ON??!!!?!?!?!?

i go out for lunch and uptown Charlotte is in flames.

yes, i am considering what Ourday said last night, but even then, i fear that this may be the beginning of the end. MJ cant count all of his chickens before the eggs hatch.

this move destroys our frontcourt, doesnt answer our PG problem, and is a questionable salary cap move (in my mind)

Getting Calderon/Evans is much a better deal than Dampier/Carroll/Najera

We are not improving with this trade.. We should get Barea and not Carroll.. This is a one sided trade.. and that means Dallas has a better GM than Bobcats..1 Refrigerator is enough for Bobcats..
But I’m still hoping we can get improvement by trading Dampier and Diaw..
