Calderon-Diaw-Chandler trade still on hold (update: Bonnell says it's close to dead)
I will be very disappointed if the Raptors-Bobcats trade ends up being just a big tease, especially if we have to take back Boris Diaw and Tyson Chandler after they were convinced they were leaving. Also, because I'd lose my excuse to get a Bobcats jersey with my favorite number, Jose Calderon's number 8.
But in the end, it's not a bad development at all that the trade is on hold. Amazingly given MJ's reputation as a personnel man, if Woj's report (linked above) is true, Michael Jordan is -- again! -- the voice of reason. Why should Tyson Chandler be a throw-in to get a point guard? Why should the Cats give up their best center? Their defensive rock in the middle? Forget Reggie Evans, and forget Chandler. Why can't we make Boris for Jose work?
Oh, and forget about Al Jefferson. He's off to Utah. Unless MJ thinks he can get the Bosh exception and swoop in with a better offer, that's probably not happening. Guess Deron Williams is happier today?
UPDATE: Bonnell says it's close to dead.

I'm almost convinced there's another layer to this
that we haven’t been able to sniff out yet. Especially after reading some comments from James and ODWC, I can’t shake the feeling that there’s a quality center coming to Charlotte somehow or another, in addition to Calderon and his spot-on Bullwinkle impersonation.
Also, I’m all for Diaw going away, but I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Chandler sticking around. He never quite got a chance to play at 100% over a prolonged stretch of time, and seemed to start finding his comfort zone in the paint towards the closing moments of the regular season.
We all hope you're right
But this is about the point when my pessimism kicks in
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
The more I broke down yesterday's deal the more it made less and less sense
Ultimately, I think we may see Diaw and maybe Nazr’s expiring deal heading to Toronto, but I find it harder to accept that Chandler’s $12.25 million expiring couldn’t net us something better.
Toronto are still looking to move Calderon, because they are small now. The lost Bosh, traded Turkoglu… and now have three PGs.

Probably
Naz and Diaw for Calderon and no trade exception $…
or about what we were going to get to begin with…I am betting Chandler is removed from the deal completely now.

I'm 100% ok with that
we still have our best option at center. We still got rid of Diaw, and we still get Jose Calderon. Plus we still have our largest expiring contract.

I'm standing by my hunch
Either Toronto gives us some of the trade exception, or they don’t get Chandler.
They can’t have their cake and eat it too. Whatever happens if we’re sending Chandler somewhere we also need to get some benefit that will allow us to go and get a center. If Toronto likes Chandler’s game, fine… but you’re going to pay for it one way or another.
Diaw for Calderon straight up is a mutually beneficial deal. The Raptors need help in the front court, and want to be rid of Calderon’s long term deal. We need a point guard, and want to be rid of Diaw’s contract. Toronto already gets salary relief long term because Diaw expires sooner than Calderon, but getting Chandler too is overkill.

The problem is everyone already heard about Diaw + Chandler
And Toronto seemed to be most excited about Chandler. Colangelo would look like an idiot to only get Diaw now. I bet he backs out if Jordan will only go straight up, or probably we throw somebody else in.

Ya think?
They seem to love Calderon. Giving him up for lesser value might not go over well. If we dont get a better Center then I’d really like to keep Naz and Chandler. But Ajinca or Diop can go with no damage done.

The fanbase know it's not a fair trade talent wise, but from the comments I read they are happy because of the money
Jarrett Jack isn’t better than Calderon, but their fan base isn’t convinced Calderon is $5 million per year better than Jack.
Right now they have $21 million of their salary schedule to go to point guards (9 to Calderon, 7.1 to Barbosa and 4.8 to Jack) that is an immense misstep when they now only have Evans and Bargnani who can play PF and C.

Chandler is more valuable to the Bobcats now than ever.
One other possible scenario is that Toronto wants Chandler to use the same way we are – as a nice fat expiring that will get them another piece or two. Otherwise they wouldn’t be trying to hold on to that exception so tightly. They’re stockpiling cash for something and want every penny.
For us, that exception is essential in either keeping us well under the cap for trades during the season, or opening up opportunities for us to pick up a long-term starter at the 5 for reasonable coin. It’s fairly clear to me based on everything James and I are getting fed that Jordan has his eye on a specific someone that we’re all just not seeing. SInce virtually all the NBA bigs have been discussed here in one thread or another it’s got me scratching my head. At this point I wouldn’t rule out someone playing strong in Europe that he wants to woo. It’s a wise move on Jordan’s part either way to stonewall for every dime he can manage to wring out of Raptor claws over the next 48-72 hours.
It’s also standing out to me as a huge red flag that the one central thing James and my sources are flatly refusing to disclose is the name of whoever it is that Jordan has zeroed in on. All we know is that it’s going to be a pretty big deal if MJ pulls it off and that it’s not a temporary fix. It’s going to answer our viability question at Center for several seasons. That pretty clearly rules Shaq out and at this point I expect to be dazzled by a hell of a lot more than a bad free throw shooting, clog up the lane, can’t run, old as dirt former Superstar.

The initial goal was getting Calderon and enough of the exception to take us south of the cap.
There was another step after that where the info got pretty vague. But people were called in well after hours last night to work on this extra piece and it centers (no pun intended) around an answer to what we’re going to do the next 3 seasons in the five-slot.

I think it's too much...
Just because we lose two centers… now, I don’t pretend to know what Toronto’s plans are long term, or who they want to build around.
But, I wouldn’t be surprised if Colangelo knows about, and loves Ajinca… he’s one of those guys who monitors Europe closer than most.
If, and it’s a big if… Toronto are in full rebuilding mode and plan to build around Jarrett Jack and Demar Derozan I would pull this trigger on this deal in a second:

I disagree Mike.
Calderon will develop quickly as a defense-minded guard under Brown and that will make Calderon into an elite at the point. Add in Jackson’s ability to see and spread the floor and we don’t need CP3. I’ll say it again. There is no way in hell Chris Paul is headed to the Bobcats at this point. He has his sights set elsewhere and Jordan is firmly set on getting Calderon signed.

I agree 100%
I think Calderon is a Bobcat by 5 p.m…. too much of the Raptors’ plans hinge on being rid of his contract.
This could be a very shrewd move to get a lot more out of the Raptors than they ever planned to give up. I’m thinking adding Gerald Henderson into the deal and getting back DeMar DeRozan, who the Bobcats coveted and were prepared to trade up to get.

I dont really agree with this.
(Paul) has his sights set elsewhere and Jordan is firmly set on getting Calderon signed.
1) Where have you seen any indication from Paul himself that he is not interested in playing for Charlotte?
2) If MJ was “firmly set on signing Calderon” then Calderon would already be a Bobcat at this point. MJ has not pulled the trigger for a reason. And whatever that reason is, it ultimately has to do with wanting something better (or at least more) than Calderon.
Something bigger than Calderon
Jordan wants a blockbuster. He wants a superstar.
MJ is so competitive he not be able to stop himself from spending whatever it takes to get what he wants and try to build a winner.
But Jordan has enough sense to guard and insulate his wallet.
He’s competitive, but he’s not losing his head in an all out effort to buy a quick run at the title.
These machinations are designed to make the Cats solid contenders for years – at least until Jackson and Wallace are aging past their primes.

MJ is playing hardball with NO with this whole Toronto trade in the first place, and has really had his eye on Paul the whole time.
Just for fun, check out this trade:
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=5613220
it works.
NO gets big expiring contracts, cheap insurance at the PG, and rid of their worst salary.
Bobcats get the Elite player and old sturdy back at C.
Its a win-win.
That is the exact trade that I proposed in my fanpost
New Orleans wanted those players, Ajinca, Henderson and two 1st round picks while we took James Posey in addition to Paul and Okafor.
I have that on good authority.

More speculation (from myself included)
I ‘ve heard the speculation about Melo, Paul, Amare in NY. But that’s just that.
Knowing CP3 i seriously doubt that he would EVER rule out playing in NC. Especially if he thought the team here was a winner.
And Jordan knows enough about basketball to understand that as it stands now Paul is one of a handful of players in the NBA that could immediately make the Bobcats “relevant”.
With a sweet enough pot NO and Charlotte might go for it.
Toronto
Is this Toronto trade the big one to make us relevant or is your source talking about some other unknown trade that is in the works?
No... both my source and Ourdaywillcome's source are telling both of us similar things:
The Toronto stage is a step in the big deal, but not the big deal itself.. but the major trade may depend of Charlotte getting this one done.
There is a possibility that if this Toronto trade doesn’t happen at all then it means the larger trade fell through.

Any chance he is holding this up because he is trying to get another team to offer up something better for Chandler, or is he just second guessing giving away Chandler at all.
I don't think there's any second-guessing by Jordan at all.
Best guess based on the data James and I have gotten is that something else big is in the works and getting fair value for Chandler is essential. Either the bigger deal is in danger of falling through (possible) or Jordan sees a chance to really put the screws to Toronto to maximize Charlotte’s bargaining power in the bigger deal (far more likely.)
by Ourdaywillcome on Jul 13, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions
reading between the lines
it looks like Charlotte wants that trade exception, and originally the plan was to send the trade exception off to another team (PROBABLY MINNESOTA) for a star
but either it’s come to light that the mystery team will settle for chandler only,
OR, the more likely scenario, it was al jefferson and we’ve realized that without the trade exception, we have no chance at getting him over utah, so MJ is making sure toronto knows it has no chance at getting this deal done without the exception… diaw/chandler for calderon and trade exception is a good trade for us, and since toronto would have to use the exception this year anyway, is good for them because it gives them immediate relief next year
I was told with some certainty that Al Jefferson was involved, but it didn't appear he was going to Charlotte
I have a hunch or two about who it could be after looking at the league’s roster… but nothing concrete enough and god help me if I’ve guessed it because I don’t want to ruin this deal.

I would try to swing a deal with the Knicks. Chandler/Diaw for Chandler/Curry. For all of his problems Eddy Curry is the perfect compliment to Tyrus Thomas.

Very possible.
Ajinca was a HUGE disappointment in Summer Ball. He solved much of his size problem but the extra bulk made him clumsy and foul prone in a big way. If the Cats haven’t lost all patience with him yet, they’re about to. They can only work with a project player for just so long without getting some kind of results. Ajinca is being considered pretty much a wash by the Cats FO.

I hate the FO thinks of him like that.
What did they expect? The kid is just now 22 right? If they wanted a player to contribute immediately why did the draft Ajinca in the first place?
If it was me (which it obviously is not) I’d still give him time to develop and maybe become a quality center. But since its not me, trading him for a good value might be the best option.

The media would never report something that is false…
Neither would Tyson Chandler…

Absotively posolutely.
They’d never disseminate false information.
They almost got caught when they faked that whole moon landing thing at a soundstage near Area 51. Since then, they take no chances and have a fair and balanced view of everything.

Hollinger is tweeting the deal is dead.
He also called it the dumbest deal in recent NBA history and said it was a bummer for the Raptors organization.

“Can’t talk… grabbing some food… phew. PR machine is in full force. don’t buy into a lot of what you’re seeing. Things going well. Hope to catch up with you this weekend man!”
Well, you can ignore the personal statements, but you get the drift

How do you and ourday meet these people?
My biggest insider I knew was Tone, the old hypeman at the arena
“Yo this is Tone, and I’m up in the Sprite Zone and it’s a party up here! Come up here and join us”

I met him at a Christmas party a few years back and he knew I blogged the Panthers and asked if I followed the Bobcats. We’ve become friends since.
I can’t say the department he’s in, but it’s not very high up or glamorous, but a lot of information flows through his department.

I worked for Novant.
They own Presbyterian Hospital, Forsyth Medical Center and about a dozen other hospitals. The Bobcats partnered with Novant to set up the ambulance services, public treatment clinics, and team medical rooms at Time Warner. I was the purchasing agent that stocked and set up those facilities. I was the Bobcats contact for procurement of supplies until I got disabled. You spend enough time in the belly of the Cable Box, you meet some folks and make some friends.

my uncle
was for quite some time in charge of inventory at Presby, so I would imagine you two have met at some point, his name is Jamie
The name doesn't ring an immediate bell.
It’s possible that if he runs inventory control at Presby he coordinated all the stuff I bought for their engineering department. He might know my name better than I would know his. I dealt with like 60 guys down there. If he was there 2 years ago, next time you talk to him tell him I’m the guy that set up the Engineering stockroom window down there. He’ll know what you’re talking about. It was a HUGE change for that facility.

One more thing to add about Steve Kyler of Hoopsworld
He was the first person to report that the deal involved Calderon and Chandler yesterday morning, while ESPN still said it was just Diaw. From where I sit he has his finger on the pulse and closest to what I’m hearing from my guy. This is what he had to say recently:
The odds this deal gets done is still pretty high, it’s just going to require Toronto to come out of pocket a little and that may include tossing in some cash.
Also, it’s important to understand the anatomy of a trade:
1) Teams agree to a deal
2) The trade comes across the league’s table where they examine it vs. the CBA and sign off on it.
3) It goes to the owner’s for final approval.
4) When they both sign the deal is official.
Thus, if the owner’s or owner refuses to sign (like it appears has occurred) then the league considers the trade ‘dead’. Once a deal hits the league’s desk it cannot be altered.
So, while the trade that was proposed yesterday may be dead that doesn’t mean an almost identical deal may hit the table in an hour or two, or in a day or two. Each time a change is made the original deal is ‘killed’ and a new one is drafted.

I'm probably the only one who cares about this but...
Is the contract digital? Some type of e-signature? You sure couldn’t mail one back and forth that fast. Or is there some type if witness of the hand signature?
