Boris Diaw traded to Raptors

Goodbye Boris Diaw. Now that you've been traded to the Toronto Raptors, here's hoping you and Andrea Bargnani won't get utterly destroyed when you try to play defense together. That first season with the Bobcats was a shock to the system, since you -- out of nowhere -- became a monster three point shooter and had your best run of play, ever. Last season, you went back to being the guy you always were, only with more three point attempts, and that guy is going to be useful to NBA teams for a long time to come, but we're better off taking our chances that Tyrus Thomas does more with his gifts in starter's minutes.

Star-divide

The trade also routes Hedo Turkoglu to the Phoenix Suns, and the Cats have received Dwayne Jones and part of the Chris Bosh trade exception. (What? We couldn't get Jared Dudley back?) Jones was with the Cats for a minute or two in 2008-09, and last season was a D-League monster. I'm not making this up: In 48 games, he averaged 17 points and 16 rebounds per game. Discounting for level and per-minute, he's no starter, but he might be a better rebounder than Tyson Chandler right now, which would make him an attractive candidate to soak up 10-15 minutes per night.

As for the exception, the original report doesn't say exactly how much it is, but if the Cats don't want to use it to sign someone (and luxury tax-ize themselves), it could be a good trade chip.

What? Is this true?

No PG, just a D leaguer and a trade exception?

I can’t find it on NBA.com, yahoo, or ESPN…
And I’m hoping this isn’t what I was “waiting for”

What???

I have been hoping and praying to see Diaw moved. However, I had thought he was one of our more tradeable assets (he actually has game). Did we get nothing back or what? What happened to the CP3 talk? We just traded away our bench leader/2nd team commander for Dwanyne Jones? WTH?? Really? Dwayne Jones? Sounds like he did alright in D-leauge….but honestly, my down syndrome brother who stands 6’3" could rip about 10 boards a game in D-League.

I feel like we have been hustled!! Here I am, sitting and waiting to be impressed by the FO and their moves. Only to get Dwayne Jones. Nice. So now we have 10 centers on the roster that can’t stay on the court and off the bench. 10 D-leaguers. Also have NO PG (sorry DJ) and a 2nd unit that looks like a summer league team. I am starting to think we may be in trouble. Haven’t felt that yet, but this news this morning has me worried!

by mives36 on Jul 12, 2010 8:24 AM EDT reply actions

Trade exception

We still have the Chris Paul talk… Diaw never figured to be part of the equation in getting a superstar PG, a trade exception does.

You put it best (with a bit of hyperbole) ‘we have 10 centers on the roster’. Why do you think we’re stocking up on them? Only logical reason is that the expiring contracts of Chandler and/or Nazr are going to be moving somewhere.

Diaw would've been a tradeable asset next year when his contract was expiring,

but not this year. He’s not worth half of his salary. I’m glad Toronto is panicking to fill Chris Bosh’ role.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 12, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I sound like a broken record but... something is up

If the Bobcats wanted a PG and Toronto wants to shed cash then why didn’t we get Jarrett Jack in this deal?

Calderon and Barbosa are more than capable to run the point for the Raptors, furthermore if they like Jack more than Calderon then we could have gotten Jose for Boris straight up.

Toronto now has three excellent point guards, why?

aight I'm going to make myself look stupid

could someone please explain what exactly a trade exception is? what it does? obviously it’s a good thing and to get one for Diaw is great, but what all does this mean?

Okay, here's the deal

If ‘Team A’ trades a player who’s salary is $10 million and ‘Team B’ trades a player worth $8 million then ‘Team A’ gets a $2 million trade exception.

What this means is if ‘Team B’ want to acquire a player down the road but don’t have enough cap room or contracts to make the numbers work they can add the previous $2 million to help the deal goes through. This exception lasts for one year.

Basically what it means for Charlotte is that they can now trade and take on $14 million more in a trade. This is absolutely mammoth. As Charlotte is so close to the cap they wouldn’t be able to trade say Tyson Chandler and Nazr Mohammad for Chris Paul and Okafor because Chandler and Nazr = $18 million and Paul and Okafor = $25 million… this means the Bobcats can use $7 million of the trade exception to acquire the players.

Basically it means if you give more money that you get then you can use the leftover money to complete a later trade.

The exception is just a bank where any remaining money sits until you make a trade.

New rosterbation trade scenario

Works for all the teams involved. Notice it fails in the trade machine by $8.45 million, but keep in mind this hasn’t been updated for the trade exception.

D’Antoni routinely used A’mare as a center in his run and gun small ball lineup.

I’m basing this idea on the notion the Knicks will use this lineup:

Felton/Gallinari/Randolph/West/Stoudemire

Also, I’m going to miss Diaw. Maybe not because of his play the past season, but what his arrival signified. He was the last remnant of the trade that led to the Bobcats rise in popularity and eventually our first playoffs. His first year with the Cats was great and he was fun to watch when he was “on.” I’ve never seen a power forward make layups from such inconceivable angles. He had good passing skills as well. That said, I hope he does well in Toronto but moreso I hope we can turn this into a big trade.

there's too much sitting on the table right now

I can’t take the pressure. We have 5 Centers. We have two with decently sized expiring contracts. We have a LARGE trade exception about to be at our disposal. I don’t even know what to do with myself right now. I like Calderon…don’t mind Jack. Barbosa is good, but I’d rather not get him because that would limit Gerald Hendersons PT. You guys think we’ll get Amundson too? I honestly don’t want him that much. Great hustle, but kinda dumb.

Interesting news; truth remains to be seen, though
Yesterday the Raptors shipped off Hedo Turkoglu to Phoenix and got Leandro Barbosa in return and have a deal that’s likely to drop today which will return Boris Diaw for Jose Calderon and Tyson CHandler for the trade exception the team obtained from Miami in the Bosh sign-and-trade deal.

So we’d get Calderon, and a trade exception…how much is the one with Bosh worth though? I’m cool with that, but that’s a little underwhelming unless we’re planning on making another move. Which seems likely.

If that's the case then I think we might see Al Jefferson as a Bobcat

If we really are getting the full trade exception from Toronto for Chandler then we can send Nazr Mohammad and something to Minnesota for Jefferson, with the exception filling the salary gap.

As mentioned before a lineup of Calderon/Jax/Wallace/Thomas/Jefferson would be very, very deadly.

FYI, for those not familiar with Calderon’s game… he’s one of the most underrated PGs in the east (per 36)

His assissts took a dip this year w/ the addition of Hedo (not to mention just a shitty season in Toronto). The two years prior to that he avereaged over 9 per 36min. Since we’re trading Diaw, I imagine Calderon to take over the primary facilitator role, while Jax can focus on scoring and wing defense.

Though Jefferson doesn't really fit the roster

since he’s a 4 and not a 5. A starting front court of TT and Jeff is better than anything else we could put on the court next season.

with JAX, Crash, and TT

we might have more than enough scoring options. We need a good rebounder and low post scoring threat and Al Jeff fills that. Now thinking about it I know CP3 is a beast but jose/al jeff is better because we get that low post threat we sorely need when we cant hit a jump shot and we all know okafor looks like robocop in the post

by Fonz21 on Jul 12, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I think his slight improvement in some numbers while playing C

is more an artifact of where he’s standing on the floor while at the 5 vs. where he is while at the 4.

I still see him as a 4 who’s asked to play out of posistion like so many other bigs.

82 games has his rebounding rate as being 13.7 per 48 for both PF and Center

That’s for the 09/10 season. For 5 man units, the Jeff/Milicic unit seems to be better defensively than the Love/Jeff(at the 5) units as well.

I still don’t see the Hornets trading him. Now the Calderon/Al Jefferson possibility makes me giddy as a little school girl. Dear God please let that happen.

by RV21 on Jul 12, 2010 11:20 AM EDT reply actions

Still nothing but player exits

It’s just like the Panthers. Cut a bunch of vets and do nothing but sign special teams… Or in this case, bench hopefuls.

I’m really hoping this accumulates into a big bang, but there still is the possibility we are just trimming fat. Seems to be a trend around here lately.

Did you see that the trade involves Jose Calderon per one source?

That is a significant upgrade at PG, even over Felton.

Not exactly the splash I was hoping for

Not even sure if that makes us better than last year. The best part for me is still getting Thomas in the starting lineup.

Calderon is much better than Felton

He’s a more efficient scorer, a better passer…

Don't have the numbers in front of me...

But isn’t he like 35% 3p? 45% FG? How is he “much” better?

Plus, Calderon's 3p% is skewed downward

because of an outlier 1st season.

He’s been a fairly decent option behind the arc.

I'll take your word on it

How’s his assists?

on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city

by southtunnel on Jul 12, 2010 1:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

5.9 assists in 26.7 minutes last season, but he took a hit with Jarrett Jack starting at the point and Toronto being in flux.

In 2008-09 he averaged 8.9 assists as a starter.

A few more things that may excite you ST

This is from last season, in limited time per NBA.com:

- 12th in the NBA in assists per game
- 23rd in the NBA in three point percentage
- 1st in the NBA in number of assists (404)
- 3rd in the NBA in assist to turnover ratio

He's also shot 90% from the foul line for two season

and his assisst numbers are better.

He’s not going to score more than Felton (he won’t really need to), but he will be more efficient, and generally run the offense better.

May be a let down on defense and is probably over paid, but he still makes the team better.

Sorry, the CP3 talk was just a delightful fantasy, it was never going to actually happen.

So are we taking Diaw back?

because I was happy that he was gone for the past 15 minutes. I cant stand to watch another game where he ends it with 0 rebounds.

I read that Chris Paul was predicting a Super Team with the Knicks in 2012 with himself and Melo joining Amare. Mabey Paul is a Diva like Lebron and only cares about playing with other “superstars” You would think playing close to home and competing for a Championship would be more appealing.

by Bcat2.0 on Jul 12, 2010 12:07 PM EDT reply actions

I read that

I don’t know how much of that is a fleece job by the NY Post, but the report I read said that this was more of something the Knicks were floating and Paul was interchangeable with Tony Parker.

I feel bad for them... they're dilusional
Chandler would be a nice piece. He’s that rebounding grit we need at C.

- We must have missed that part of his game.

Diaw is oe of those multi-tool point forwards that BC loves, can guard four positions and is able to slot anywhere into the lineup.

- Standing and watching someone school you doesn’t really classify as ‘guarding’.

RIck Bonnell reported the deal was for Calderon with us giving up diaw and Chandler. Calderon is no chris paul but i will be Ok with it if we can get Jefferson

by Bcat2.0 on Jul 12, 2010 12:51 PM EDT reply actions

Adios Diaw and Chandler

Thats what happens when you mess with the Bobcats and dont give your best effort. We send your asses to Canada. haha. They were the weak links all of last year and I am happy to see them gone.

Calderon was injured last year though and had a severe drop in assists and slight drop in points per game. I still think its a good move and I see him improving under LB.

Do we need a center now? Jefferson would be my first choice but if not, Is Brenden Haywood still out there? He was very nice in fantasy last year.

by MR. MANN on Jul 12, 2010 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

The news is the Mavs want the Twolves to take on more contracts than just Dampiers. They want them to take Matt Carroll or Stevenson along with Dampier. Mabey we can get something done with Mini.

by Bcat2.0 on Jul 12, 2010 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

Carroll would be more use…We don’t really need an anchor to hold the bench down

Carroll could easily come intoa game and serve a purpose

by andrewlail76 on Jul 12, 2010 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Not entirely

The Mavs weren’t willing to give up Dampier’s expiring, which killed the deal.

Dampier's contract for this year

isn’t fully guaranteed, which is why the Mavs are trying to hard to hold on to it unless they get a great deal.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Jul 12, 2010 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Personally, Dampier for Jefferson classifies as a ‘great deal’ to me… but I’m not Mark Cuban

Nazr and DJ plus trade exception?

by Bcat2.0 on Jul 12, 2010 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

They want to rid themselves of guards... they don't want another one.

Jefferson can be had for Nazr’s expiring and the trade exception. They were willing to part with him for just Erick Dampier’s expiring contract.

If we can make it work for just Naz that would be great. Seems like one of the more onesided trades to ever go down. But then again the Lakers pulled off Gasol

I am wondering why the reports are Diaw and “mabey” Chandler going out. Do we not need Tyson for the Jefferson deal or is the Trade exception more valuable to us?

by Bcat2.0 on Jul 12, 2010 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

I think it’s because Toronto don’t want to give up any of the trade exception. There is no other player who Charlotte would want that could make up the difference in dollars.

That being said, if we just traded Diaw for Calderon outright the Bobcats just robbed the Raptors blind.

Okay, so from comparing both the Bonnell article, ESPN and an article in Toronto here's what we believe:

- Charlotte will be getting Jose Calderon (both sources)
- Charlotte will be getting Dwayne Jones (ESPN)
- Charlotte will be getting another ‘unnamed player’ from one of the two teams (Bonnell)
- Toronto will be getting Boris Diaw and Tyson Chandler (both sources)
- Toronto will not be giving up any of the trade exception (Toronto source only)

The last bullet point doesn’t make any sense. Toronto can’t take on $21 million in salary from Charlotte without sending some of the trade exception down here.

yeah im confused....

this mean we are not getting al jeff? :(

by Fonz21 on Jul 12, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Highly dependant

As far as I see it there are two ways to get Al Jefferson:

1. Trade Tyson Chandler’s expiring contract to Minnesota
2. Trade Nazr Mohammad and part of Toronto’s trade exception to Minnesota

The Toronto reporter hasn’t done his math. It just doesn’t make any sense for Toronto to get Chandler without sending the exception.

Ok heres an Idea the “mabey Chandler” part of the deal might include a 4th team mabey the Twolves sending us Jefferson and another player to Toronto and Twolves get Chandler. I mean why would the Raptors want Chandler they just paid Amir and they have Rasha.

by Bcat2.0 on Jul 12, 2010 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely a possibility.

I didn’t rule it out.

Minnesota want to trade Ramon Sessions, but I don’t know if that’s a player Toronto would want.

This is GREAT

I have practically been glued to this thread all day.

Did anyone see that Calderon was 151 for 154 at the charity stripe during the ‘08-’09 season, good for 98%? That’s gotta be a record, right? Did he not shoot the minimum requirements to qualify? That is uncanny…

by Newsinz on Jul 12, 2010 1:32 PM EDT reply actions

Uncanny is right

Though he doesn’t get to the line as often as one would like

I actually like it

I’d rather the PG be a spot up shooter and let the lane driving fall to Jax and G-Force.
