Bobcats extend qualifying offer to Tyrus Thomas
The Charlotte Bobcats have extended Tyrus Thomas the qualifying offer, making him a restricted free agent, and allowing them the option of matching any contract offer another team may send his way. Though this was a widely expected move, it lays to rest any doubt about whether or not the Cats would try to keep Thomas or pursue cheaper options in free agency.
The Cats are now slated to pay Thomas $6.25 million this season, pending any kind of extended contract, and you can be sure that in this uncertain climate -- CBA, broader national economy, et cetera -- there will be few, if any, teams willing to pay Thomas that much money for more than one season.
Assuming Thomas does return to Charlotte this year, here's hoping he gets as much playing time as Boris Diaw. As much as Diaw may add with his passing, ability to stretch the floor with threes,. and his merely good defense, the total package isn't as intriguing as Thomas's excellent defense and ability to run the floor and rebound like mad (Boris's biggest weakness). If another coach were running the team, it might be cut and dry that Thomas would start, since he's such a blend of Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson (both good and bad attributes), but in Larry Brown's system, Diaw's skill set is probably a better fit, making it a matchup question.
On a minor note, this likely means the end of Derrick Brown playing power forward, though a super-small lineup with Thomas at nominal center could be exciting. (He's got a standing reach higher than Paul Millsap, Al Horford, Joakim Noah, and Kevin Love, to name a few bigs who've seen lots of time at the nominal center position.)

Good move
I was skeptical that Charlotte really would make this offer because it points toward the end of Ray Felton’s days as a Bobcat, and I’m pleasantly surprised. This is the right move to make, and hopefully Thomas’s career takes off next season. I’d like the Bobcats to sign him to a two year deal with a team option year for a little less than the QO. Wouldn’t mind if they threw in some incentives either.
I think someone is going to sign Tyrus to an offer sheet
Too much money flying around for it not to happen. We’ll likely match it, but I think we’re just letting the league set his value given the amount of FA power forwards out there.

My fear as well...
But I still think that Felton will be gone and we’ll be trading someone for a PG.
Also…if Tyrus REALLY wants to stay…will he take the offer sheet to go elsewhere?

If we match the offer, T-Time stays here.
The Bobcats can keep Felton if they decide to. There are plenty of ways to move these expiring contracts to avoid the luxury tax.

Because he's restricted Tyrus doesn't have an option to leave, Charlotte controls his destiny
If a team signs him to an offer sheet and we match it he has to be a Bobcat.

Well he may make $6.2 next season...
What if he flourishes, becomes a double/double guy and is out 3rd top scorer?

Oh yeah, I want Tyrus here long term
He’s only 23 right now and just coming into his own.
I just don’t want to pay through the roof for him.

Understood...
But I presume $6.2 is what we have to pay him to make him be restricted?
What did we pay Felton to make him restricted?
Whatcha bet he’s gone(Felton)?
See the Charlotte Observer article?

The $6.2 is what he is paid if nobody signs him to an offer sheet
We pay him 1 year, $6.2m then he becomes a UFA.
Felton’s was the same $6.2m because they were both #5 overall picks. Nobody signed Felton because he wasn’t considered very good, and teams didn’t want to burn money on him with Summer of 2010 looming.

Yeah i think everyone wants him here we just want him to start. More than that we want Diaw gone. At least I do.
I want Diaw's contract
gone more than I want HIM gone. I think he would be an effective BENCH player. Comes in gives Tyrusauras a rest plays some D, makes some assists, and sits down.
I want Tyrus more than I want Felton. Felton is one of the streakiest players I’ve ever seen. When he’s bad he’s bad for a WHILE. Then he’s good for a 5 game or so stretch, and then goes back to being BAD. Dj is not the answer, but can be a bandaid. We should get Flip back. Run with Dj and Flip, and trade Chandler’s expiring(barring he doesn’t opt out) for a PG with some skills.

I think Derrick Brown /Ajinca will do fine coming off of the bench behind Tyrus...As for a PG...
Sign and trade Felton…or move Chandler’s expiring for a skilled PG.
I don’t think DJ is the answer at PG…unless he found a huge pile of confidence…
