Why should the Bobcats trade for a draft pick?
The NBA draft is a tricky proposition in the sense that there are really only a few modes a team can be in when it drafts:
-- Rebuilding
-- Taking the next step
-- Maintenance
-- Cost-saving
If you're cost-saving, you don't want the pick. Sell! Sell! Sell! (See: Phoenix Suns)
If you're maintaining, you pick guys who still have development to do overseas, where you don't have to pay them, or you pick guys who will help immediately, and you don't worry about trying to project five years from now. (See: San Antonio Spurs)
If you're rebuilding, you shoot for the moon. There's no sense in taking a guy like Tyler Hansbrough if you're rebuilding, because if he has Kurt Thomas's career, you call it a rousing success story. Rebuilding means you take Tyrus Thomas instead of Brandon Roy, because Roy had a perceived ceiling, whereas TT did not. You should take Rudy Gay instead of Shelden Williams for the same reason. Williams was the better college player, but at the next level, no one expected the Landlord to be -- in their wildest dreams -- better than what Emeka Okafor has been, whereas Gay's athleticism and skill set meant he had no ceiling.
But if you're taking the next step, like the Bobcats are trying to do, there's a wide variety of choice. Shoot for the moon? Why not? Take a role player like Jared Dudley? Sure! Sell your pick for cash toward a free agent? Yay! At this stage of the success cycle, you just want to add value any way you can. Which means the Bobcats have little to no motivation to trade for a first round draft pick. A first rounder would probably require trading a player already on the roster, and it doesn't really make much sense, considering that management won't really want to trade any of the guys who would net a pick that high. A second rounder could be had, and at that point, unless DeJuan Blair falls into your lap, you roll the dice and hope the guy contributes something, anything.
So, what's the point of spending money on a second round draft pick? At that point, it's just as good a bet to gamble on reclamation projects, or never-weres, like (I won't say the former Milwaukee Buck who I'm semi-obsessed with) Ike Diogu or Gerald Green, or D-League wonders like Rod Benson (obligatory) or Rob Kurz, and you don't have to pay another team for the privilege of signing the dude to a minimum contract.
The draft is fun, but at this point, we're probably best off sitting out.

I tend to agree that this team doesn't really need a draft pick this year
Hendo and D.Brown are still looking for a way into the rotation. There’s no way to fix the PG delima through the draft either. But I tend to believe that the FO is looking to find their way at least into the second round. Bonnell tells us that the Bobs are active in trade talks(entirely plausible w/ LB and MJ running things), and this time of year that often means draft picks.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Bobcats become the third wheel in some of the insane scenarios flying around
Rumor is that the ticket to acquire LeBron is to acquire Chris Paul. Chicago, New York and others will be trying to swing a deal desperately to land Chris Paul this week as the bargaining chip to land LeBron in July.
I straight team to team deal seems difficult with New Orleans so I see the Bobcats become a piece of the puzzle. So here are my two scenarios:
Through Chicago Felton also heads to New Orleans in a sign and trade and the Hornets get Chicago’s 1st rounder.
Through New York Much more difficult, but David Lee also heads to New Orleans in a sign and trade.

Both of those deals would NEVER be accepted by NO.
That Chicago deal is just awful for the Hornets. And they don’t really even save much money. The second, though, is even worse, destroying their entire backcourt of the present and future to pick up two mediocre wings who play like little girls.

I wrote these before reading in depth about the team sale angle
I didn’t know they wanted to shed so much money so Shinn could sell the team, so they don’t really apply any more.

I thought Shinn had sold his shares...
But then again…I don’t really follow the Hornets

ESPN keep saying "Shinn is trying to sell the Hornets"
So I assumed he was still majority owner, but I don’t pretend to know their workings.

Glad to see Tyrus wants to remain a Bobcat...
That is a HUGE + for us…
and to me…makes Diaw tradeable…
New thought:
What if the Bobcats put together a package for Chris Paul? He sat with MJ during the playoffs, he is a member of team Jordan and didn’t #23 say he’d be willing to take on more money if he made the team better?
The Hornets are accepting offers and want salary relief. So, we send them:
- Chandler’s expiring, DJ Augustin (or Felton in sign and trade if they want him), Gerald Henderson and cash
and get
- Chris Paul and take the remainder of James Posey’s bad deal

A little "awkward" situation would exist there with Tyson going right back
to N.O. in exchange for Paul, who was mad they traded Tyson in the first place. I’m on board with it though, whatever it takes, get CP3 in Charlotte. (Number conflict?) Jordan’s legacy has to mean something.

Yeah, there is some weirdness
They might just buy out Chandler immediately.
I think New Orleans are in full tilt boogie rebuilding mode now and are willing to salt the earth, Paul included… which seems insane to me.

Smallproblem...
NO has already said that they do not plan to move CP3

The new Hornets coach Monty Williams said that he didn't want it to happen, and didn't think it would happen
But of course a new coach is going to say that because to not have Paul means his coaching career is doomed before it starts.
George Shinn wants to sell the team, and shedding cap is what is needed to do it. According to this video ESPN’s Chad Ford thinks it could happen if a team was willing to take back Okafor’s contract.
We of all people should know that Shinn has no loyalty to anyone except Benjamin Franklin, it will happen if it improves his chances to make a sale.

I would LOVE to have Gerald Green in a Bobcats uni.
That’ll be three Gerald’s on the team, but they are also three of the most athletic players in the league. I believe Larry can get more out of him than Doc Rivers or Ric Carlisle ever did.

I hope we get a draft pick
Just because this is the least interested I’ve been in the draft since… well, as long as I can remember.
We do know Diogu had microfracture in April, right?
As for the pick, why not? If it’s early enough, you at least get to pick from twenty-some guys who won’t hit free agency.

I think they are thinking that Diogu has the regen. factor that Wolverine does...
and he’s completely healed now…though it usually takes a year for most to bounce back from it.
As for a trade…as long as the team is smart, and gets a “value added” pick for something that has little to no value to us, or to remove something that doesn’t currently fit, go for it.
If we go for a swap that we get a draft pick where we draft someone who can play Uno with Hendo next season, what is the point.
I have a feeling, however, Hendo and LB are becoming fast friends since Felton will most likely be gone and DJ just isn’t starting PG material. I know Hendo isn’t a PG, but what other options are there? As long as you can advance the ball to halfcourt and you have a couple guys who can run plays…so be it.
If Felton didn’t take the $6mil per that he was offered last year…why would he take it this year?
My curiosity is if we will offer him $4…or if we make him an offer at all. Perhaps the Sign and Trade will be in effect.
