TrueHoop: Tyson Chandler to opt out?
According to this TrueHoop post (thanks, Chris!), Tyson Chandler may opt out of his contract before this season. The key passage:
Now that the injury is behind him, Chandler is looking to seize an opportunity. With so many teams under the luxury tax next season and only five or six top tier free agents out there, a number of teams are going to be left with lots of money to spend this summer. Not everyone can land LeBron or Dwyane Wade. The other thing working in Chandler's favor is that there aren't really any true centers in free agency this summer and a number of teams with cap space including the Thunder, Knicks, Timberwolves, Wizards and Heat need a center badly.
In other words, Tyson senses that though he may not get $12.6 million this upcoming season, he'll get reasonably close to it, provided he proves healthy, and there's enough of a market for centers that he could get multiple years. Say he gets 3/27mil, then he'll be better off than the 1/12.6mil plus 3/9mil players of his caliber are frightened they'll be left with after the next round of labor negotiations.
It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for the Bobcats to lose Chandler and his contract, since it would change their free agent outlook, but who else could the Cats add with just under $8 million of cap space that would make sense?

isn't this potentially great news?
don’t need to tell you guys that the Center position is already heavy on contracts. Is Diop (and Ajinca) so bad that they can’t be in a rotation with Nazr Mohammed?
And they wouldn’t be under the cap unless they renounced Tyrus Thomas, who it’d make even more sense to re-sign if Chandler were to leave. Heck, maybe if Felton doesn’t get any great offers he can come back as well.

I'm not even sure they would be under the cap when you factor in the MLE and BiAnnual as well
For the Bobcats to get under, it would take a lot of renouncing.

He's delusional for thinking he can get close to $12.6 mil a year
What has he been smoking? I want some of that
Won't know how I feel about this until the roster for next year is set
One negative is that we wouldn’t have his contract to use in a trade later this season.
I don't see this as great news really
It could work out well, but it could also leave us w/out a true starting 5.
How’s this for a nightmare: Chandler opts out and signs with another team. Charlotte, enjoying some cap space over pays for Felton and cuts a reasonable deal w/ TT. We have Nazr, Diop, and Ajinca under contract at center with the potential to sign Theo to a vets minimum.
Chandler was decent when healthy last season. Nazr won’t hold up for more than 18 minutes a night. Ajinca ain’t ready to do anything more than 15 minutes…and that’s his best case scenario.
This could only be good for Charlotte if they pulled some more trade majic.
on Frenchie
i did watch him in some D-League games last year, and remember, he was voted to the All-Star team that year.
but then again, i’m sure kids at my high school could make that squad.
the point is, he has shown improvement, and i do expect this to be “his” year as far as development goes. he has the ability to score with a verity of post moves and a pretty nice jump-shot.
the only weak point of his game is obviously his size. theres no way he could play agaisnt a banger like Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, and, god forbid, Kevin Garnett, but if you put Ajinca against LaMarcus Aldridge or Anderson Varajao (check my spelling), you have yourself a very good center.
so my official jury on Ajinca is still out there, but i am on his side. for now.

From what I remember,
He looked like he bulked up a good bit last year. More than anybody else, I’m interested to see how he looks this year.
by djwilliams11 on Jun 11, 2010 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions
it'd be hard not to bulk up when you're as skinny as he was
bulking up for this guy just gets him to average.
I’m not trying to be down on Ajinca. I think he has a shot at being a good role player in this league, but my original point it that we can’t rely on him to be a consistent contributor next year.
I'm hoping the best for him as well
I’m keeping my mind open and am hoping he’ll contribute for us. He has shown improvement this year, and he’s got all summer to continue working.

This is great news if the Cats' front office can get a solid big man to replace Tyson
I like Chandler, but he is rarely healthy and he fouls almost as much as Ajinca. Nazr is good, but there is no way he can start at this point in his career. It’s a shame that Diop is so horrible. This should be his golden opportunity to start. It’s time for Ajinca to go hard or go home. He has been in the league long enough to contribute.

I'm half and half on this.
I don’t want to lose Chandler’s expiring contract for nothing as it could be our best trade chip this year. But, on the other hand, this gives us an opportunity to get Ray and Tyrus back.
by Charlotte Bobcat on Jun 11, 2010 6:43 PM EDT reply actions
I don't want Ray back if we have to overpay him.
That’s what could make this scenario turn into a disaster.
realistically? 3-4 mil a year
but there’s no way he’ll go for that.

4Mil Max
And he’s probably dumb enough to not take that…

If we really miss having an expiring 12.6 mil contract
We could always sign another player to a ridiculous 1 year deal.
Opting out is a good thing. He likely has an incentive to do so. The Bobcats will offer him a 4 year 6.3 mil contract in exchange for opting out. If another teams wants to pay him more, they get the prize. We get Felton, T-Time, and some additional maneuverability.

I'll take t-time...
And look for even more flexibility by not signing Felton for something that he isn’t worth…

This is great news. The Bobcats could then be able to sign Tyrus and Ray
and sign a replacement big say Ian Mahimni. The Bobcats have no picks this year, but he has what all teams are looking to draft in a big man. In the limited minutes he did play for the Spurs he grabbed 19% of all rebounds. He is athletic, can run, rebound, play good defense, and score a little. Perfect fit I think. He just wants playing time. The Bobcats could make him a starter. He would be great. Look at this clip before you judge him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcggbD8EpAM
I see him being a steal

we should pick him up only because it looks like he could help the team beat the nets

I don't know why Tyson Chandler would opt out though he has done nothing in 2 years, he's been very injury prone as well
he’s not worth more than 3 million
"Who Wants some pudding pops?, delicious and nutritious!
He may have another deal in the works with the Bobcats
The Cats may ask him to opt out of the final year of his contract to sign a longer deal that pays less money each year. For example, he may opt out and sign a 3 year 15 million dollar deal with Charlotte. He gets more money and the Cats get more cap flexibility.

Thats very stupid of the Cats I think
I think if he opts out let him and don’t resign him. There are better players available, ian mahinmi, Jermaine O’neal too would be a great fit.
"Who Wants some pudding pops?, delicious and nutritious!
O'neal is lazy
and plays with little to no heart, and sigh a healty Tyson is better than him.

No way lets compare what they do
O’neal is a great post scorer, he is a great post defender, and an average rebounder. Larry Brown motivates his players and I think he would get a lot out of Jermaine.

WAS... not IS
now all he does is scowl and try to start fights.
Well, you don't tell your boss you're thinking about leaving until
you know you’re leaving. Then you have that talk. But this all sounds a little too good to be true right now.
Oh and look at this I knew it was unlikely

That's Bonnell talking
He doesn’t consider all the possibilities, such as opting out in exchange for a multi-year offer.
by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Jun 14, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions
A multi-year offer was the first thing in my mind.
If he’s a stand up guy and feel he owes the city of Charlotte for seldom being on court last year…he opts out, and signs for a 10 mil contract for the next 4 years with us…with incentive bonuses tied in…
Yes…I still have a shred of hope with him. As the season ended…I thikn we were getting to see him returning to something resembling an NBA Center.
If Ajinca is “with the program” I’d love to see him and Chandler on the floor at the same time.

Well...
This makes me feel a bit better. With chandler…not so concerned…with the PG position…a concern:
Makes since...
I"m with MJ5, I wish we could get Ian Mihimi, but from what I see, the Spurs are high on him right now and they’ll also get Tiago Splitter in the summer too, so the Spurs will be tough next year! It makes you wonder who in the hell is on our scouting team, why can’t we ever find guys like this? Btw, if we can get in the second round, I’d like to get either Jerome Dyson from UCONN, or draft Paulo Prestes, the Brazilian ShaQ!!
No The spurs won't resign him they declined his option which was very cheap and they have no room for him
with duncan, mcdyss, Blair, Splitter, and Bonner
