Charlotte Bobcats clinch playoff spot with 104-103 win over New Orleans Hornets

The Charlotte Bobcats' first-ever playoff-clinching win didn't go as planned. The Cats opened up a 26 point lead on the New Orleans Hornets, and then gave it all back in the third quarter, leading to a tense, back and forth, final period. The Cats ended up winning, 104-103, thanks to a clutch three from D.J. Augustin with 15 seconds remaining, and, paired with the Raptors' loss to the Celtics, that put the Cats into the playoffs.

The worst you can say about tonight is the huge lead they lost to a middling Hornets squad does not inspire confidence heading into the postseason. Be happy for the playoffs. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to play for seeding.

Marcus Thornton torched the Bobcats much of the night, ending up with 36 points. Darren Collison had yet another productive night both scoring and distributing, scoring 24 points on 13 attempts and dishing 9 assists.

Game thread comments, lowlights, and highlights after the jump.

Star-divide

GAME THREAD COMMENTS

(Both after Augustin's three...)

Ft.Mill Bobcat -- Whoops, I just woke up the kids.

Julius Coxswain -- ICE COLD FATALITY... I hope.

BAD

-- It's obvious to everyone but Bobcats brass, apparently, that Larry Hughes has no place in an NBA rotation. Seriously, I'd love to know what they see in him other than "he's been in the league a long time". Tonight, he shot 2-8 from the field for 6 points in his 24 minutes. (24!) Oh, yes. And 0 assists.

-- The Cats turned it over 22 times. That's awful.

-- Gerald Wallace had, one of his worst games of the year, with 8 points on 2-6 shooting, only 6 rebounds, and 4 turnovers.

GOOD

-- Tyson Chandler put up 16 points on 9 attempts, with 10 rebounds. This is the peak performer we'd dreamed of seeing.

-- Stephen Jackson is a volume shooter. We get it. The shtick isn't quite stale, yet, though, and I think it's because he's still making good on his shots enough that there hasn't been an uprising. It'll happen eventually. Just like with Golden State. Until then, enjoy nights like this, with 29 points on 18 attempts.

-- Augustin had yet another excellent game, hitting the aforementioned clutch three, and ending up with 14 points on 5-7 shooting.

Game will not be on the 17th

The 17th is the start of the playoffs and the Bobcats first two playoff games will be on the road which means their first home playoff game will not be until Wednesday or Thursday of the next week probably.

A “secret” learned in college journalism: Write your recaps during the game and structure it such that you can make quick revisions as the story changes.

by David A. Arnott on Apr 8, 2010 7:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Augustin had a good shooting night,

But I can’t say that he had an excellent game. He got burned by DC time and time again, and he had trouble running the floor from time to time.

But then again, all is forgiven when you hit big shots like he did. Good game.

by Shockers on Apr 7, 2010 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

He will probably continue to be a defensive liability

I think it’s something we need to get used to in order to maintain our sanity. If Felton leaves, the opposing PGs will average 20 and 9 almost every night.

But we can cross that bridge later. Tonight is about celebrating a winning season and a playoff birth.

What are the Cats record when they score 100+ points?

Not sure on the exact statistics but I’m sure it is excellent.

by dudemanhey on Apr 7, 2010 10:45 PM EDT reply actions

Including tonight's game

There have been 28 times when the Bobcats have scored 100 and they are 25-3…pretty damn good.

I too welcome “hobo” to both the site and the threads. If she is the slightest bit offended by anything anyone posts, she need only ask that it be toned down a bit and I’m sure we’ll be happy to oblige. The contribution made in just the first night was impressive indeed.

Like I said in the thread...

I thought your first one was an animated gift from the Japanese Game Show “Hai Majiday” (sp?)

It’s still good to have you on board and jumping into the fun of the gameday threads with both feet.
I hope you join in tonight as well.

I had thought you were a dude from the beginning but when everyone else tagged you as female I started to wonder.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 9, 2010 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

The illusions are all shattered.

All season long I’ve been imagining us all sitting in formal attire, wearing suits and tuxes that would make Pat Riley weep in envy and sipping Dom as we type on our porcelin keyboards.
I figured I was the only one sitting in my pajama bottoms and sucking down Cokes out of a plastic cup.
Geez, next I’ll find out I’m not the only one burping, farting, and scratching myself between game comments.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 9, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm going to believe in the butterfly effect

if we didn’t pick up hughes, it would’ve greatly altered our future, possibly leading us to miss a playoff spot.

just trying to stay positive.

by Shockers on Apr 7, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

no way those losses are hughes fault

the only reason we were still in the game vs chicago was because he hit back to back threes. Yeah, he missed towards the end of the game but we wouldnt have been in that position if it werent for him.

You all should learn to trust LB. He is slightly insane but it usually ends up working.

by MR. MANN on Apr 8, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

he also missed 4 shots (5 if you count a half-court heave at the buzzer) in the 1st half

Look y'all

Graham has proved his worth to the club and in so doing left a void. Chandler came back and has played some of the best ball of his career and that made the void bigger.

We have to have SOMEONE to shower with disgust and disdain.
Hughes will do for now and to hell with the facts. He’s the easiest target and the new kid in school. It’s his turn to be stuffed in the gym locker a few times.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 9, 2010 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Larry Hughes is too expensive and not worth to be a 6th man.. We will be ok with Graham and Henderson.

F*** Clay Bennett. And Charlotte thinks George Shinn is a douchebag.

by Ben Swanson on Apr 8, 2010 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats a good price

LB just needs to find Hughes something better to do. Like being an usher, wearing the Rufus costume, or painting LB’s house. He’s not cut out to be on the court any more. In 10 games, he has shot 26.1% and averaged 1.1 turnovers a game. Maybe he was once an great player and only sucks for us. Not exactly. His career shooting is 40.7%.

Ray made love to pressure!

Ray hit two big free throws. Thornton came down and hit a three so Ray needed to make both of those.

Playoff strategy

Honestly, with 4 games remaining and Heat and the Bucks with 2 wins ahead of us, I’d rather see the Bobcats face the Cav over Magic. It’d be really hard to make that push for 6th or 5th seed, so what do we do? Let Jax and GWall rest and let Hendo play the rest of the games?

by Shockers on Apr 8, 2010 3:17 AM EDT reply actions

Wallace was clearly injured

at times it looked like he could barely move his left shoulder. Even after halftime he looked stiff.

So I suppose we can give him a break for his bad game, considering he had to get two of his rebounds with one hand!

Although, that still doesn’t explain why Larry Hughes played so many minutes.

by adamcawa on Apr 8, 2010 6:45 AM EDT reply actions

Exciting times

It’s put up or shut up time now Charlotte. It would be nice to see the city and the state finally get behind the team and put some asses in the seats. The whole ‘I don’t go to games because the team is terrible’ excuse doesn’t work any more.

GO CATS!
