Back end of the bench guys

I'm a huge fan of signing minimum, or super cheap, guys to fill out the back of the roster. Essentially, if your 13th guy is getting serious burn, it doesn't matter how much you spent on him. The team likely stinks, even if he's the best 13th man in the league, so you may as well take an upside flier on those back-end guys.

There are D-League heroes floating around out there, and a few guys who entered the draft despite little chance of being picked, that I'd like to see the Bobcats give a chance, even if only for a summer league look. I strongly suggest following Ridiculous Upside for a more complete look at the draft season, but for now, let's think about who might help the Cats for almost nothing.

After the jump, a few of my favorites.

Star-divide

Rob Kurz -- Dude can shoot. Even in his brief NBA stint with the Warriors, he shot over 39% from beyond the arc, so it's not like his 43% three point shooting in the D-League this past year was a fluke. Even better, he can fake it at PF with his 6-9 frame. Obviously, it's an open question if he can defend adequately enough, or if he can rebound well enough to play regularly as a "big" man, but the poor man's Andrea Bargnani isn't necessarily a bad thing to be.

Chad Toppert -- Anyone who's 6-6 and shoots 48% from three (111-231) gets my notice.

Diamon Simpson -- I've been a big fan of Simpson's since I worked the sound board for St. Mary's College games. He's an undersized power forward, especially bulk-wise, but he's got a 7-foot wingspan and really pulls down boards.

Alexis Ajinca -- Hi-o! Freedom Fries did pretty well for himself, when he played. He fouled too much and turned it over a fair amount, but the guy was far from terrible. In the NBA, he'll have to understand that he's a power forward, not a small forward, but at a certain point, he is who he is. Flashes of an unblockable fadeaway add to the intrigue.

D.J. Strawberry -- Darryl's son took care of the ball, with one of the highest A/TO ratios in the D-League last year. Really, isn't he already at Gerald Henderson's floor? It might not be terrible to have two of those guys around.

Sylven Landesburg -- He's leaving school early, probably because of trouble with his program, which is a big red flag, but his talent is there, and Charlotte's the kind of team that can gain a lot from a proven ACC scorer who likely won't be drafted because of those nebulous "character concerns". Don't get me wrong, those concerns are real, as it appears he just didn't do his schoolwork, but if it's a case of a guy seeing no use in college, that's something that I'd be willing to work with.

If we're in the process of signing backup PF's, Rod Benson gets my nod.

Despite his pop-internet cult hero status, Benson is one hell of a player and was easily one of the top big men in the D this year. If you’re going to sign someone to be a solid bench guy, it should be a player like Benson.

Ridiculous Upside’s take:

Rod Benson, Reno Bighorns (14.0 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 54% FG, 1.8 bpg, 1.5 spg) – For whatever reason, Benson’s been a bit of a late-bloomer over his four-year D-League career – he always seems to get better as the season goes progresses. I don’t know why that it is, and I’m not sure it’s necessarily beneficial, but I’m going to report it as fact. To support my fact, I’d like to tell you that since February, Benson’s played 14 games and averaged 16.2 points and 11.2 rebounds. During that time, his best game was a 19 point, 17 rebound and three block effort in 30 minutes of action against former NBA bigmen Courtney Sims and Earl Barron. Since he’s no longer blogging, I’m not entirely sure what excuse NBA teams have to not give him an opportunity. Still, they apparently have them.

Dwight Howard fined $35,000 by Dder Kommandant Stern

Dwight needs to view the replays on his 22 fouls. Sure the refs were inconsistent during much of the series, but at least 20 of the 22 fouls were clearly fouls.

4 of the 6 fouls in game 4 were not fouls

so im pretty sure the 20 / 22 figure is incorrect

Check the replay

Only one foul on Howard in Game 4 is debatable. Also note that Howard throwing his body into a player to get a clean block with his hand is still a foul. Watch Dwight’s chest and note where his feet are.

he had 2 fouls where he was actually standing straight up with his arms straight up and wasn't moving

thats two. the third was when gerald wallace decided to trip over his leg as he was standing in place. i dont remember the 4th one that shouldn’t have been called.

the first foul he committed was the third that they called, when he attempted to block felton I think it was and he hit him on the arm. don’t remember the last one.

Odd that you care so much about RoF and the Bobcats that you keep visiting

If Dwight can’t acknowledge he committed the fouls, he won’t be able to improve. This will make the Boston series more challenging than it should be.
Keep looking in the rear view mirror, we’ll keep smiling.

Man, screw you!

“Oh, I’m just bored cuz my team doesn’t play for a while since we ousted the Bobcats in a sweep. So I decided to go rub it in those Bobcats fans faces since I’m just SO BORED”

And if you honestly thought that your comment was an apology, how long do you think we have to wait to see our team again?

So in conclusion, please leave quietly.

Those are your actions, jackass
you guys lost. have a nice vacation.

Them’s fightin’ words to me. The ‘have a nice vacation’ part was totally unnecessary. You could have just said, “you guys lost. But although the superior team won in quick fashion, it was a hard fought battle from both teams that unfortunately ended too soon even though there was questionable officiating in every game.”

To me, that was rubbing it in our faces. I don’t appreciate you coming over here and saying that. You can say it all you want on OPP, but this aint your home turf bub. Once again, don’t let the door hit you on the way out

Seriously...

Go blog on the Atlanta page…Jeez…why lurk here…now?
Good luck you you guys…and to share the hospitality…
Hope Vince and Dwight figure out how to not foul out of every game…or you guys will be REALLY bored when Atlanta advances and you’re still bitching about what you think is/isn’t a foul…

Honestly, do you think that the refs intentionally called 12 fouls on Dwight and Vince every single game they played against us…whether there were fouls or not?
