The next Charlotte Bobcats coach
Crazy season, huh? We've all had a chance to decompress a bit, and perhaps start getting over everything that's happened and think about what's next. To that end, we'll have a series of offseason issues posts where we can discuss what we want.
Obviously, and the NBA calendar requires it, the Bobcats' coaching situation will get top priority from management. Larry Brown and the 76ers can say all they want about "bull", but smoke, fire, yada yada yada, not to mention that this has happened with every other job LB's had. I can't emphasize that enough. This has happened with every other job LB's had. Remember when he coached the Pistons to the Finals for a second straight year, but told anyone who would listen that he was going to become president of the Cavaliers, and was telling everyone this during the Eastern Conference Finals?
All that's to say that it's hardly shocking that Brown wants to leave, and if he goes now, I'm fine with it, as long as his contract is torn up and we don't have to pay him anymore. Don't believe the line that the guys on this team are "Larry Brown guys" that no one else would be able to coach. First, Brown is a type, and his type is out there, from Scott Skiles to Mike Brown to assistants none of us would recognize.
Second, it's entirely possible -- I happen to think so -- that Brown's style of offense is not conducive to the modern NBA and doesn't maximize the skills of available players. The players on our roster have, for the most part, bought in to Brown's defensive philosophy and -- except for D.J. Augustin and Nazr Mohammed -- all are fine components of that machine, but offensively, we don't see a system tailored to our guys' strengths. If this were college, we'd be a perfect candidate for 40 Minutes of Hell, pressing and fast breaking our opponents to oblivion, but I'm not sure how that could be applied at this level.
If the Bobcats do end up needing a new coach, the best name-brand option among the available guys might be Avery Johnson. It would be a different challenge for him than the Mavericks presented. That team was great offensively, and he brought a defensive emphasis that improved them, whereas this team is already great on defense and badly needs offensive retooling.
Tom Thibodeau has defensive bona fides, having designed the Boston Celtics' defense, but we don't even know what kind of offense he would install.
An outside-the-box candidate (that rocks) might be Keith Smart, a Golden State Warriors assistant who runs their defense because Don Nelson can't be bothered with such things. Absent more information, he seems like an interesting possibility since he's a "defense guy", yet his most recent job was with the Ws and their turbocharged offense.
And then there are all the retread options. With Michael Jordan in charge, there's always the possibility Doug Collins gets a call (shudder). Mike Dunleavy is unemployed. Ugh. Lee.

I nominate Ourday for coach (he has that girls soccer experience)
and AndrewLail for assistant coach (to fine tune the Bobcats dunking skills).
Golly that sho' nuff is a flatterin' proposition.
It’d be right nice to not have to deal with having to adjust my starting lineup because one of my players called me aside to tell me “I can’t run much today because I’ve got my monthly visit.”
Seriously, once I stopped laughing at this it suddenly occured to me that I should be able to now manage to keep a straight face while telling people that my name came up in the Bobcats coaching decisions and not burn in hell for a complete fabrication.
It would certainly save MJ a few bucks since both Andrew and I will work cheap, but I imagine we’d both get thrown out of the job quickly by Stern for asking too many opposing players for autographs and free gear during games. I also wouldn’t be able to resist protesting bad calls by throwing my spare cane at the ref’s feet and then threatening to sue them for discrimination if they DARED to eject a cripple.
The problem is, I can’t work with that Lail guy. He insists on fair play and I just can’t handle that. Plus the first time I needed to draw up a play during a timeout and found my clipboard covered with photo-shopped pics of my players in compromising positions I’d have to hit him. While Andrew would NEVER hit a guy in a wheelchair, he might sic his son on me and I’m not sure Conner has any such moral reservations.

On a more positive note....
if any of our guys makes the Dunk Contest again, we’ll have some good material worked up way ahead of time.

Amazing...
I can’t believe that we both have been offerd coaching jobs by our Rof Peers…and am flattered…
As far as fair play goes…well…I can stretch that one…and as for the photoshopped players…well…consider it comic relief for us and the players…
Otherwise, I’m game if you are…so could you guys get MJ on the horn and let him know we’re ready?
Also…why do we only have 41 votes…
True, I voted for Avery…and I should have withheld until I read who “Other” was referring to.
IF I can get this gig for $60K a year…I’m your guy for life!
Connor has great moral reservations and would never strike…now Duncan (the star that I appear to trip in my dunk video)…he’s another story…

hm, well now that you menton it,
I sorta like the idea of having Avery Johnson as head coach.
has anyone considered the remote possibility that Phil Ford may be offered the job? I’m not saying he should, but I think the possibility of him being asked could happen.
I'm sorry; who are these people?
Tom Thibodeau? Keith Smart?
(Googling)
Hmmm…not a bad resume for Thibodeau, but 19 years in the system without one head coaching stint? I can’t help but think his is either missing something, or doesn’t want to run the show. He certainly would be able to continue to stress the importance of defensive dominance, that’s for sure.
Pass on Smart. I’m not a fan of Nellie ball, especially anyone who plays a part in it’s “defense.”
Vincent + More Chances to Fail = Dunleavy
Nothing against Bernie, but I just can’t see much forward progression coming out of bring him back into the mix.
I read an article about Paul Silas a few weeks ago. He seemed to be very happy with his current lifestyle, but a sales pitch from Air Owner could change things in a hurry. He’s my “other” vote (although I wouldn’t mind the Little General at all).
To be quite honest, even though he got tossed by Philly, I've always been a fan of Eddie Jordan.
By all accounts players love him. And to me he did a pretty damn good job with several years of so-so Wizards teams, getting them to the playoffs and having mild success there. I wouldn’t mind having him around.

I think you wouldn't have to worry about the retread established coach
don’t you think that Charlotte will go less experienced, i.e. cheaper?

Do you want to be our coach?

Umm, no please.
We already have one person in the front office who wishes he could be golfing instead.

Don't forget Silas was in consideration for the coaching job before Larry was hired
If it turns out Larry Brown isn’t a foregone conclusion to coach the Charlotte Bobcats, then another guy with Carolina ties would love the opportunity. They wouldn’t even have to fly Paul Silas in for an interview according to the Charlotte Observer.
Former Charlotte Hornets coach Silas lives in the Lake Norman area, and he calls coaching the Bobcats his "dream job.’’ He interviewed a year ago for the position Sam Vincent ultimately got.
With Vincent fired, Silas would like Bobcats managing partner Michael Jordan to revisit him as an option. Silas says the Bobcats need a veteran presence and a known figure in the community. He fits both descriptions.

Keith Smart
Probably not HC material , he’s not great at handling rotations and bad subs.
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

So you think LB is straight up lying?
When he says “I will not coach for anyone other than Michael”? Or you you think he’ll go after an office job?
I for one believe him, that if he’s coaching next year, it’ll be in Charlotte.

Ummm....I don't.

He's probably not straight up lying, but that doesn't mean he's telling the truth either.
I believe he means that Charlotte is the only place he’ll coach, but he may not want to coach at all. What he may not be saying is that he’d rather work in Philly’s front office.
Then that's not lying

I addressed this a bit in my long "Breakdown" fanpost.
Brown doesn’t come cheap and MJ can save a few bucks easily because he has several assistant coaches on staff with solid experience. I mentioned this there saying “Ford, Capel, Hanners, and even Herb Brown (LB lite) are all capable of stepping up for a season or two before overwhelming fan hatred requires a pink slip.”
I find David’s whole comment about not buying into the belief that only LB can coach LB’s guys amusing since he was among those suggesting that the players we brought in this season would need time to adjust to the Brown system. Let’s face it, these guys are pros and will adjust to whatever coach tells them. But the flip side is that it’s only reasonable to accept the fact that it will take the team a while to learn any new system, particularly if it represents a radical change. That’s why I’m thinking that Jordan might want to go with one of Brown’s assistants that not only already knows LB’s methods, but might have ideas of their own on how to improve and build on it.
Also, despite David’s uncertainty that Brown’s way of play may not fit the modern game, LB’s record speaks for itself and he DID manage to lead the Cats to the playoffs despite every pundit with a pen INCLUDING David saying it was an impossible dream. The players that were brought in to town this season carried reputations and baggage. Jackson in particular was considered one of those uncoachable problem players. One of the biggest problems the team will face in selecting a replacement for LB is in finding someone that will continue to bring out the best in players like Jackson and Thomas while also succeeding in keeping them from creating the media circuses and problems that they are already famous for. Brown got deserved credit for keeping everyone focused on basketball this season and it’s no easy task. I guess what I’m saying here is that I believe that however flawed he may be, Larry Brown is one hell of a coach and I’m not going to start dumping on him and questioning the viability of his methods just because he might be headed elsewhere.
It’s pretty obvious that the team needs offense. I think it’s also obvious that we aren’t going to get it without some roster changes – especially at center. It isn’t going to appear by magic just because there’s a different guy wearing the bosses clothes on the sideline. The team is lopsided with players that think containment first, scoring second.
I don’t want Brown leaving. He’s good for the team and the squad has bought in to his philosophy. But if we absolutely have to hire a new coach I’d like it to be what I’ve already stated – a current assistant that the guys already know and are used to working with.
If I can't have LB.
Avery Johnson is the guy I want for this team

What's Sam Vincent up to these days?
Nevermind, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit when I typed that.
What about Byron Scott?
Avery is still my number 1 but B.Scott is no slouch by any means.
Just saying there are some real quality options out there.

You guys seem pretty comfortable with Larry Brown leaving Charlotte
Your team played well this year and earned their playoff spot and put a perfect gameplan on Dwight Howard. Charlotte definitely deserved to win at least 1 game, but yeah, the lack of offense did hurt. Jameer Nelson was pretty impossible to contain, and seemed like Stephen Jackson’s nagging injuries may have caught up with him…or maybe his heavy minutes all season tired him just enough. Idunno.
But doesn’t it irk you guys that your coach proclaims just a moment ago that he is here for the long haul (thats how I interpreted his comment, “I’ll only coach for Jordan”) and now its getting pretty public that he might go to Philadelphia?
I mean, yeah, Brown does this every few years wherever he has gone (umm..I believe 12 different coaching jobs…WTF?!), but I’m surprised you guys seem to not be looking at this from the perspective of, “You built us up, and now you are letting us down!”
Also, don’t fall prey to the likes of the Sam Vincents, Byron Scotts, Eddie Jordans, Mike Dunleavys, and Michael Currys. Vincent and Scott may have won Coach of the Year before, but they wear out their welcome quickly. Scott is quickly becoming the new LB too, except he gets fired before he can leave. Curry and Jordan are really just not very good coaches. The 76ers had plenty oftalent the last couple seasons but Jordan did an awful job of bringing them together. They have veteran stars in Brand and Iguodala and excellent youth in Lou Williams, Jrue Holiday, Thadeus Young, and others and Jordan managed to make EVERYONE angry and frustrated. Wasn’t much different in Washington either. Don’t be fooled. Michael Curry just seems to be guessing not having any sort of longterm plan or system for Detroit.
Avery Johnson would be a definite interesting signing though. Not sure if Thibodeau would take the position though, but maybe Lawrence Frank is on the radar too. His tenure in NJ didn’t end well, but that was partly due to NJ front office not wanting to spend much $$ at all. Frank did a solid job in NJ.

It isn't that we're comfortable...
…it’s that we know that there isn’t a damn thing we can do if he DOES leave…
And ourday and myself are ready to take over…
Can I have my vote for Avery rescinded and placed in the “Other” category?
Also, add Tee Ball Assistant coach to my resume please

If LB is gone...
I would have to go with Avery Johnson…b/c he is already a defensive minded coach who I’m sure learned alot under Popavich. Plus seems like he has strong personality which could easily keep likes of Jax and Ty under check.
I'm strong with defense...
Defense and dunking on everyone…

You guys fail to see the conspiracy I do?
Larry Brown talking about jumping ship. MJ not caring if he goes. Jump across the country.
Phil over in L.A. is talking about leaving and looking for another “more challanging” HC job in the NBA, and he definately has ties to Jordan.
I’m just saying.
