Orlando Magic win 90-86, go up 3-0 on the Charlotte Bobcats

Photo

The Charlotte Bobcats lost to the Orlando Magic in Game 3 of their first round playoff series, 90-86. Though the end result is disappointing, the Cable Box this afternoon was as electric (sorry) as I've ever seen it.

If we've learned anything this series, it's that the Magic are probably equal to the Cavaliers -- when Dwight Howard is in the game. Without Howard, and I'd be surprised if the +/- data didn't confirm this, they're essentially equal to the Bobcats, who aren't pushovers, but have never been title contenders this season. Howard's just that good, but it's also a testament to the Magic's depth that Marcin Gortat can step right in and keep the Magic competitive on the road in front of a frenzied crowd.

Now, barring a miracle, the series is over, and it's just a matter of time until the Bobcats lose their fourth game.

Let's accentuate the positive, though. The Bobcats started the night on the right foot by acknowledging NBA history in Charlotte, showing a brief highlight reel of Hornets playoff action. Then, throughout the night, they introduced basketball legends in attendance, giving the crowd an opportunity to cheer David Thompson, Muggsy Bogues, and Robert Parish. The crowd responded to Stephen Jackson's flapping arms, and was at full volume from the opening possession, chanting DE-FENSE and booing J.J. Redick.

Game thread comments, lowlights, and highlights after the jump.

GAME THREAD COMMENTS

adamcawa -- Just give Gerald the ball and let him drive right into Howard. Ugh.

andrewlail76 -- Next guy to take a jumper with more than 5 on the shot clock... I will beat him down.

BAD

-- The Bobcats shot 5-23 from three, with the primary offenders being Jackson (1-7), Raymond Felton (0-4), and D.J. Augustin (0-3). The percentage from three isn't what bothers me. They simply shouldn't be taking that many threes. If the Cats are going to win games in this series, they have to drive the lane and play the way they have all season, by taking shots at the rim, Big Bad Dwight be damned.

-- The Cats' centers were mostly useless. Theo Ratliff committed three fouls in the first three minutes of the first quarter, none of them on plays when Howard was in the act of shooting, which is almost always acceptable. Nazr Mohammed did what he's done all year, scoring 6 points on 3-6 shooting, but he's probably not completely healed from his back injuries, because he can't move nearly quickly enough to defend either Howard or Gortat, let alone help on a driving Jameer Nelson. Tyson Chandler only played about 12 minutes, shooting 0 times, grabbing 0 rebounds, and committing 5 fouls. His defense may have been fine, but he was enough of an offensive liability that Larry Brown kept him out entirely when Howard was out with foul trouble, opting, instead, to play Boris Diaw at center against Gortat.

GOOD

-- Tyrus Thomas took only 6 shots, making 3 of them, and 2 free throws, for 8 points. He also blocked 2 shots, pulled down 6 rebounds, and generally wrought havoc on defense. At this point, he should get way more minutes than he has been getting. If the results don't appeal to you, then maybe the reasoning that he fits with the Crash/Jax/Tyson mold of player than anyone else. Maybe Boris should be the change of pace instead of Tyrus. Or maybe we should take our chances with Boris at center and see if we get an advantage on offense by going small and not lose as much as everyone thinks we will on defense.

-- Speaking of Boris, he did an admirable job in a tough situation, shooting 3-5 from the field, dishing 6 assists, and grabbing 4 rebounds.

-- As much as I hate Larry Hughes and all he represents for this team, he was hot right as he came into the game, ending up 5-6 from the field, 2-3 from beyond the arc. Better yet, he had 0 turnovers and didn't commit any obvious defensive miscues. In fact, there was only one moment when he held the ball too long and acted like he was going to try to save the day that caused me to scream at him to pass the freaking ball.

-- Again, I can't emphasize enough how awesome the crowd support was for this game. Good job, everyone. Do it again on Monday.

The refs affected the outcome of this game.

You can rebut me however you like : “But Dwight fouled out! But Orlando had 3 technical fouls!”

Ok, sure. NOT. The Bobcats had 27 fouls to Orlando’s 25. Some of the Bobcats were desperation fouls at the end of the game. So that comes out to about an even number of calls. The Bobcats style of play usually leads to them getting more fouls called in their favor because they take it inside so much. However, there were so many times where Jackson or someone else would take the ball inside and proceed to get mugged with no call. This game was the perfect blatant example of a game’s outcome affected by the refs.

Towards the end of the game, I actually did think about verbally assaulting David Stern and Joey Crawford had they walked by me, as they did before the half in front of my friend who sat lower down.

David (Stern, not Arnott): you’re jewish, and I’m jewish. I like that. But you’re the biggest douchebag in the sports business and I would beat you up for helping make my favorite sport great and then turning it to crap.

To address the gameplay:

?? You foul out Dwight and then you take lots of outside jump shots and don’t rebound? arg that was annoying as hell.

Too…much…Boris… Why was Tyrus sitting for so long? The dude can rebound at least.

I really don’t have anything else to say. Poor gameplan execution, too much Boris, and bad officiating = Bobcats lose

To address the experience

- Best atmosphere I’ve ever been in
- There were some Magic fans sitting about 12 rows in front of us. The ref called a foul. A chunky Magic fangirl stood up to protest. It was disgusting to watch and her tramp stamp was broadcast to everyone behind her. Classy.
- Nelly, David Thompson, Robert Parish, Tubby Smith, MJ, all were in attendance.
- Nice to not be told to sit down

I saw you and your poster twice on the scoreboard. Nice Work!

I’d have to relive that game to analyze the calls. I don’t want to do it. The calls that stand out were the offensive fouls after the 6 minute mark in the 4th. One of Diaw, one on Chandler. I’m not going to complain. We had a chance to win the game in the end and we chose not to.

Hack-a-Howard

eliminates any compalints against the refs. I am sorry, that is the rule. You are not entiltled to complain when you spend 13 fouls against Dwight Howard.

Please, stop with the ref blaming

Both the Magic and Bobcats have reason to complain about bad calls, it gets annoying constantly seeing people just blame the refs the moment they lose. I mean were you even watching the Bobcats bigs grabbing and hacking the s*** out of Dwight down low every possession? The Bobcats lost because, as has been pointed out several times, they just dont have the offensive firepower to keep up with Orlando. If you told me that the Magic would have 19 turnovers, give up 31 points from them, have Dwight play less than 30, have Charlotte’s bench outscore our by a wide margin, and have another bad performance from VC I’d have assumed we lost by 30. I admire the Bobcats, they play with a mean streak and really have shown a lot of heart, but in the end the better team just found a way to gut out a win in front of a very raucous crowd.

So basically, I know its been awhile in Charlotte and Im glad to see the franchise in the playoffs, but using officiating as crux to defend a loss when clearly no one gained an advantage comes off as childish and misinformed.

Shaq sucks.

I’m not sure what series you’ve been watching but the refs have clearly been a big part of each game, especially games 1 and 3. If you read my comments, I do not place blame solely on the refs. I also refer to the lack gameplan execution or errors in said gameplan. But to say that the refs had no or very little part of these games is completely asinine.

Also,

I mean were you even watching the Bobcats bigs grabbing and hacking the s*** out of Dwight down low every possession?

Yes, I did see that. So effing what? They were still called for the fouls, right?

Im not saying the refs did a great job

Im just saying that theres no way for any of us to know who the calls benefited more, because there were egregious calls on both sides. I just dont approved of instantly going to ref bashing before giving the winning team any credit at all.

man, you are a baby.

grow up. the bobcats arent as good as the magic so they will lose this series. they’re a good team but the magic are a legitimate title contender. the cats have played admirably but its not that crazy to say the better team is pulling out the wins.

man, you are a giant douchebag

You think I don’t know the Magic are a superior team? For eff’s sake, the Bobcats have beat the Magic twice in the past 12 meetings, or something along those lines. But for the officiating to be so blatantly inconsistent could easily have taken away our franchise’s first playoff win, and at home to boot. A win for the Bobcats, even just one in this series, is much more valuable to our fans and our city than one loss hurts for the Magic and their fans.

by Snyde on Apr 26, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Uhm... Larry Brown is the top candidate at the moment.

The rumors of him going to Philly won’t go away, but Brown has repeatedly said he has no desire, inclination, or need to leave Charlotte. The rumor started when the team was up for sale and comments were made that if Jordan didn’t buy the team Brown would likely either leave or be replaced by the new regime. He’s been asked about it by the media so frequently that he finally lost patience a few weeks ago and said, “This is an old story that for some reason just won’t seem to stay dead!” He then went on to explain that he and Jordan are good friends and that Michael hired him at a time when no one else would so he has no intention of betraying the friendship and kindness by abandoning the team. At that time he said his sole focus was on getting the Bobcats into the playoffs and then doing everything he could to keep them there.

I've been here a while and I've also been to OPP.

People on BOTH sides of the series are complaining about the job the refs are doing and Van Gundy himself got tagged with a $35K fine and a threat of suspension for complaining about the refs.

So you decide to drop on by and post a personal attack?

I’d engage in quid pro quo with you, but your behavior and maturity has already reflected enough about you. Any degrading comments I make at this point would be redundant in the face of your own words.

It's time to rebuild for next year

Winning game 4 just delays the inevitable… Go ahead and put us out of our misery. It was a good run. If we weren’t so green and had some shooters, then maybe we could have made this a series. But we are out matched… need more pieces.

I say trade Diaw (he’s been a let down in the playoffs) for a perimeter shooter. Tyrus should start at power forward anyways. Maybe trade Hendo for a shooter also. Find a more dominant center if possible, if not, Chandler & Mohammad + a couple off the bench shooters should be enough to get us over this hump.

by ElBacano on Apr 24, 2010 5:36 PM EDT reply actions

Any significant trades we make

are probably going to be involving Chandler and his expiring contract. But we do need to get Diaw the hell out though.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Apr 24, 2010 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

We have to get either Nazr's or Tyson's salary off the books or restructure Tyson's contact.

I disagree with getting rid of Diaw. It took a team effort to go down 3 games to 1.

The only player who played an outstanding game today was Larry Hughes. So I need to give both you, LB, and Hughes props. He finally showed he’s got game. He did miss a 3 pointer in the 4th, but you can’t complain when he goes 5 for 6 overall.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 24, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

But Thomas has out played Diaw this playoffs

Tyrus brought energy and bought the Bobcats some extra opportunities… Diaw has been MIA. Go with the guy who is proving to be more reliable in crunch time, and use Diaw as bait for what we really need… a shooter!

Otherwise known as SouthTunnel. Change is inevitable - except from a vending machine.

by ElBacano on Apr 24, 2010 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Diaw should stay

Tyrus and Diaw are both great players.. excellent defenders and an average scorer.. LB can give Tyrus more minutes because he is proving more reliable in crunch time but none of them should leave this team. We need an upgrade on the center and that is getting rid of Chandler and Diop contract.. We need also an upgrade on the point guard that can shoot and depend.. I’m not satisfied with DJ and Felton..

by mjfan on Apr 25, 2010 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I like him, just don't think he's what we need

We got guys that can attack the basket, but no one on the perimeter… And Hendo has no shot. I’d rather have a guy like Reddick to be honest.

Hendo reminds me of a freaking Poor Mans D-Wade.

and I do mean really poor. He’s got the ability to cut to the basket like Wade minus some of the finishing finesse and a jump shot that can completely disappear. Sound familiar?

Our 3 headed Center position was probably the best chance anyone has at

diminishing Dwight Howard. We slowed him down, but didn’t do so well with the rest of the Magic.

We don’t have 1st round draft pick next year, but Hendo and Ajinca will fit the bill. Maybe they will get more of a chance next year.

The point is the current roster is capable of gaining a #4 seed

and being within a few games of an even higher seed, which gives us a better reaching the Eastern Conference Finals next year. We’ve proven we can beat almost every team with Orlando being the exception. We can’t really judge the Bobcats by the full 2009-2010 season. I’d like to see this group of players together for a full year. However, we all know that LB is going to keep tweaking next year.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 24, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

We would have met Orlando eventually regardless of our seed

You don’t shoot for 2nd or 3rd best… Look at Cleveland, as good as they were, they still brought I’m big names to make them the best team in the league.

We are one of the worst offensive teams in the league… That won’t cut it. We need scoters.

I don't see that trading Diaw and some of our core will take us to "1st best"

More likely it would drop us from our projected #4 seed. With more playoff experience and with some minor roster tweaking, we can be even better next year. The projected finish shows we would be a few games from #1. I don’t see that trading Diaw and some of our core would improve expectations.

Hughes did what i thought he was capable on doing but diaw…bobcats HAVE TO TRADE HIM…everyone thought he would be better being a full year with the team but hasnt gotten any better and in fact has gotten worse…still has high turnovers im sick of his two good games every month thing. ok yes...hell yes

only a 9 mil contract so that matches Diaw’s perfectly and as long as Biedrins doesn’t get injured badly like this past season I think it would be a great deal. I would like to somehow get Marrow but I don’t think that could happen without giving up Hendo or Brown. GS would not trade Biedrins for Diaw straight-up i think…although Bobcats got Jack for chips and a 5 dollar foot long. Then we could trade Chandlers huge expiring for a good 4 or sweet shooting 2 or just ride out his contract and get a good free agent in 2011.

We probably wouldn't want Diaw

I’m thinking more along the lines of a future pick (not this year but down the road). We wouldn’t give Morrow up if he was packaged with Beans. He gets traded if he’s in a package for a star. I guess I was thinking a long the lines of a 1st rounder and Diop (to make contracts work) for Biedrins at worst

Okay, just got back

I haven’t read the game thread for y’alls “in the moment” thoughts because I wanted my own to be fresh. I’ll head on in there in a minute. I have to brag and show my ass just a little, so I apologize in advance. I don’t do it very often so I beg y’all’s indulgence just this once.

The experience:
We were given our shirts, prowl towels, and lanyards and whisked through the executive entrance where we were met by 3 of the Lady Cats. (sorry, don’t know them all by name. Two were brunette – not the incredible looking brunette from the still of the dance tourney thread – and one was the young lady with the brightly dyed red hair.)

We were swept into the elevator (complete with an elevator operator! I haven’t seen an elevator operator since I was a little kid!) and taken behind closed doors to our “suite.” I’ll be honest. Our seats sucked compared to where we usually sit and the only thing “executive” about it was that they served trail mix and Bojangles. To be fair, the reason for the suckage was my wheelchair. The seats themselves offer an awesome view of the court and are set up like stadium seating in a good movie theater. Unfortuantely, although the room BEHIND the seats is handicapped accessible, the seats themselves are not. I had to sit behind everyone and stare between heads to watch the game. I had an awesome view of the jumbotron though!

Then something happened that made the inconvenient seating worth all that and a bag of fries. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life. A little inside info for you. Yes, Mugsy, Chief Parrish, and David Thompson were at the game, but they weren’t seated where they were shown to the public on the Jumbotron. They spent the first half seated with their family members RIGHT NEXT TO ME. As it came time for their “moment” they left and were guided downstairs. David was the first to leave, but I not only got autographs, but I got to talk with them quite a bit and Mugsy was kind enough to pose for pics with me! I’ll post one in a day or so, once I figure out how to upload pictures to the blog. I grew up watching Parrish in green and then watched him end his career in teal. He and Mugsy are my two favorite players of all time and I was more than a little star struck. You’re right Andrew, Mugsy is way-cool and down to earth.

I also saw one of the ROF faithful on the Jumbotron when they FINALLY got around to showing him holding his “Our Team Our Town” sign. My wife got a picture of you too!

The game itself was a heartbreaker:

I’ll keep it brief since I didn’t have the greatest view. The biggest surprise was that Larry Hughes actually showed up and played well for only the second time since coming to the Bobcats. A pity he only has a few games left before we chuck him into the back alley. I will confirm what others have said. The refs WERE a factor, but not because of what they did. It’s what they didn’t do. There were a large number of no-calls and several were bad enough that they should have drawn flagrants. It was NOT one-sided. Tyson Chandler almost caved in Reddick’s ribcage at one point. The worst infraction was a forearm to Wallace’s face where a shooting sleeve was raked across his eyes. It got called a jump ball.

The refs were a factor. But they weren’t THAT big a factor. They allowed the Magic to make a run when the Bobcats opened their largest lead, but that was all it amounted to. The Orlando Magic defeated the Charlotte Bobcats today fair and square. We had a third quarter lapse where we resorted to settling for jumpers. Sound familiar anyone? It was far more brief than we’re accustomed to, lasting just a couple of minutes instead of most of the quarter, but that’s all it really took against a real playoff team. Once that happened it kept the score close until the end and then the better and more experienced team did just enough to win it.

We can’t come back against this team. Not from 3-0. So to all Magic fans that have come to visit us, congratulations and good luck in your next series. I hope that in the 1 or 2 games that remain you are as tested as you were this afternoon so you will be in top shape when you move on. Oh, one more thing….

We’ll getcha next year!

Envious

Watching a game with Muggsy Bogues, Robert Parrish, and David Thompson must have been awesome. Did they shout and scream like the rest of us? How did they react at the end?
When you talked with them did you get any inside scoop?

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 24, 2010 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

Thompson headed downstairs about 3 minutes into the game and I barely got to talk to him. Although Mugsy, Parrish, and Sleepy Floyd (who stopped by briefly to say hi to Parrish) were more than willing to give autographs, Thompson simply passed by hat back without comment.

I didn’t talk to them too much because I didn’t want to be the annoying greasy-fan-boy type, but I did listen. They laughed and slapped five more than cheering. Mugsy studied RayRay closely and commented whenever Felton missed an open man on the baseline or if he slipped off a screen too quickly and gave the defense a chance to stay with him instead of switching off.
He didn’t outright say it, but I got the impression that he doesn’t think Felton sees the court as well as he should. Parrish didn’t talk a whole lot, but when Theo picked up his third quick foul, he said, “That was just stupid.” I don’t know if he was talking about Theo’s play or the fact that the ref called it. Keep in mind also that out of respect to the two men I’m not commenting on any profanity they may or may not have used. During his brief time in the box, Thompson didn’t hesitate to snap up the free grub and had a plate with what I can only say was a mess o’ chicken.

Most of my conversation was with Mugsy who seemed genuinely interested and excited that I’ve used his “Don’t Tell Me No” video as a motivator for the girls on my soccer team. He asked questions about the team and when I told him about the girls that got college scholarships he grinned from ear to ear, shook my hand, and actually thanked me for working with underpriveledged kids. Getting sincerely thanked by Mugsy Bogues pretty much fried my circuits for a few minutes and all I could do was thank HIM for providing such a great motivational tool and being such a big role model for kids. It was right after that that he saw my wife with the camera and offered to pose for pictures with me. If I can figure out how to upload some of the pics she took, you’ll see I still have a dumbass grin of shock on my face.

Shortly after each of them went downstairs for their “legend” moment on the Jumbotron, the cell phones of one of the people that were with them rang and everyone got up and left. I don’t think either Bogues or Parrish were in the building for much of the 4th quarter.

I won’t go into details because I don’t know if it was a joke or not, but the first time they did the sound meter on the big screen and the crowd got it up to “playoff level” Mugsy looked around and commented to Parrish that he (Mugsy) should have said yes when he had the chance to buy in. The convo went on a bit from there but again, I don’t know if he was messing with Parrish or not. I just pretended I was deaf – which wasn’t too hard considering that the crowd was the loudest I’ve ever heard at a Charlotte ballgame – including the Hornets!

I’m not ashamed to admit it. The first couple of times the crowd really got into things I came damned close to dropping a tear or two. It just felt so good to be a part of something that special after being at the Cable Box so often when there were more people cheering for the visitors than for the Cats themselves. The video clips they showed during timeouts were really emotional as well, showing the history all the way back to the Hornets days at the Hive. The only bummer was that I didn’t get to see Stern although several of the people in the box with us said he was nearby. They also said he had some very big men doing body work for him so the fans couldn’t get too close. I read that before the game he actually went so far as to say that if the city of Seattle would just build the stadium he asked for that the NBA would award them with a new franchise and if they’d done it when originally asked to the Sonics would never have left for OKC. What an absolute turd.

Thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed the write-up

When Bob Johnson owned the team everything related to the Charlotte Hornets was shunned. I was thrilled to see the Charlotte Hornets playoff moments on the big screen before the game. The crowd roared their pleasure. I hope the Bobcats continue to tie in with local professional basketball history. I would suspect that many in the crowd did not know that Robert Parrish played two seasons in Charlotte.

Charlotte scored 32 points off 17 turnovers, while Orlando scored just 13 points off 13 turnovers.

im glad

Everyone had a great time at the game. Wish I could have been there.

This was a good game, really until the 4th where for some reason we decided to stop driving to the basket and instead toss up a bunch of missed 3s. Sigh. Alas.

Really good game by Hughes though, as much as I dislike.

Orlando is just better.

There, I said it. Still, I would like to see our A game at least once before we bow out (I’d say tonight was a solid B).

by Newsinz on Apr 25, 2010 2:41 AM EDT reply actions

I agree.

Game 3 was the best the Cats have performed in the series and it was close enough to their top form that I felt the team represented well. But they still weren’t quite at their best. If they could play at yesterday’s level and make it their standard, I’d be a happy man as long as they brought their “A+” game out here and there.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 25, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree Orlando is a great team. We may have been playing the eventually 2010 Champions.

Thus is the problem with having the #7 seed.
Questions still remain.
Where was GW in the 4th? Why were we shooting 3’s in the 4th?
What was that call on Boris late in the 4th?

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 25, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Everyone in my box was still trying to figure out the Diaw call even after the game ended.

Good news for the Orlando chances though. When I got home I learned that the Lakers are playing as if they’re trying to earn starter jobs with the Nets. There’s also a lot of infighting and finger-pointing going on.There’s a better than middlin’ chance they’ll be gone early.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 25, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That Boris call hurt, whatever it was.

Also the 3 pointer by Boris near the end that looked like it was going in and rolled off the rim = more hurt.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 25, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Boris is the only Bobcat to play in every game this year

The problem is that he disappears so often during the course of the game that he may as well be inactive. His level of production does not match the $9 million he is making this year. In theory, Diaw is one of the most talented players on the team. Theory, however, doesn’t average a double double or get the Cats out of the 1st round. There are times when Diaw’s contract is more frustrating the Diop’s.

Boris disappearred after JAX arrived

Once the team got the chemistry worked out, Boris was doing quite well. He had rarely disappeared until the playoffs. A lot of Bobcats have disappeared lately.

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

That is the position i’m taking after game 3. To lose is one thing, but not bring your “A game” in 3 tries is completely unacceptable.

The Magic have been leaving the door open every night, but the ‘Cats won’t walk through it.

Yes, the refs suck. Yes the Magic have been draining threes. Yes Nelson is playing the best basketball of his life (ridiculous). But the Bobcats just can’t put it together for 48 and that is more than disappointing.

Felton

I have always been a big supporter of Felton and still like his skill set. But after this playoff series, i say offer him like 4 years/20 mill and if he won’t take it let him walk. 1) who else is gonna pay him that? 2) He’s not even playing worth 5 mill a year really.

Steve Blake?

Maybe trade with NO for Darren Collison?

Go with DJ at the PG and draft somebody to back him up?

Jeff McInnis?

by dudemanhey on Apr 25, 2010 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Diaw.

If Diaw can’t be non-nonchalant for once in his damn Bobcat’s career, i’m about ready to trade him for whatever and focus on signing Thomas and promoting him to the starting PF position. At least Thomas doesn’t just hang out on the perimeter and take ill timed 3 pointers.

by dudemanhey on Apr 25, 2010 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

If Diaw had made that last 3 that barely rimmed out with 2+ minutes left in the 4th

things would be a little different. If we lose one of our PFs, we are back where we started when we only had Diaw.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 25, 2010 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

He should have swung the ball to jackson,

or drove it to the rim. Diaw has played under-whelmingly thus far this entire series. I think for what we pay him we would be just as well off to give his minutes to Thomas and DBrown and find some other options as well.

Playoffs expose a team's flaws.

The problem is, with no cap room and no draft pick (in one of the deepest drafts ever. Oy), there’s very little that can be done to improve the team. Hopefully they let Felton walk, perhaps get creative with a trade to clear cap space for the future and try to find a gem in the UDFA market. There will be a glut of talent with everyone afraid of the lockout and so many people declaring. Now is the time to be targeting guys who might slip through the cracks.

by Spider Jerusalem on Apr 25, 2010 11:42 PM EDT reply actions

It may be time for Raymond to play elsewhere

He plays hard every night and he seems to be trying his hardest to improve, but I cannot see him playing at a level that would give the Cats an advantage at the 1. He is a very solid guard who should have a long career in the league. Unfortunately, Nelson put Felton in the Million Dollar Dream in Game One and he hasn’t let go. Felton has improved leaps and bounds this season, but I don’t think he is the long term answer.

The Ray Ray situation is similar to the Jason Campbell situation in DC. Campbell was able to get a job elsewhere and it’s looking like Felton will follow suit.

by Julius Coxswain on Apr 26, 2010 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

For another season or two Ray is our only real option.

The team has no choice but to try and keep him – especially since Augustin failed to develop as expected this season. We don’t have a hell of a lot of options there.

I can chalk up Ray’s game one performance to playoff jitters. He’s improved some in the last two games, but he’s still getting schooled out there. The upside of that is that it’s going to weaken his bargaining position when it comes time to negotiate his contract this summer. The downside is that between him and DJ the future of our backcourt is now almost as large an issue for the team as our gaping problem at center and the Bobcats don’t have the resources to fix both positions. But that’s an evaluation of the near future. The sad truth is, there is no upside to what he’s given us in the playoffs. There are any number of reasons for the 0 and 3 playoff record the team is sporting – foremost of which is the plain truth that right now Orlando is simply the better team. You can arguably toss lack of experience, no home court advantage, erratic and sometimes pitiful calls by the officials, and a dozen other things onto the pile too. But any honest evaluation of the Bobcats performance in this post season has to include Raymond’s failure to handle his defensive assignments. He’s not the only member of the squad that failed to deliver in this series and I don’t think it’s fair to make him the scapegoat for our losses, but he definitely shares some of the blame.
