Orlando Magic dispatch Charlotte Bobcats 92-77; Magic lead series 2-0

The Orlando Magic held serve at home in their playoff series against the Charlotte Bobcats, winning Game 2 by a score of 92-77. While the series is far from over, the Cats face virtual must-wins in Games 3 and 4 back in Charlotte, given that they weren't a good road team during the regular season and were defeated handily in these last two games at Amway Arena.

It started with a disastrous first half, in which the Bobcats scored only 30 points. Then, in the third quarter, the Magic extended their lead to 20 points, and there was no recovering, despite a furious fourth quarter comeback attempt that fizzled with about 4 minutes to play.

Charlotte seemed to make appropriate adjustments to defend Jameer Nelson, holding him to 13 points on 11 attempts and only 5 assists. However, though Dwight Howard was limited by foul trouble, he was individually dominant when he did play, scoring 15 points and pulling down 9 rebounds in only 29 minutes. Vince Carter scored 19 points on only 10 attempts, and Matt Barnes had a solid game, with 11 points, shooting 4-6 from the field.

In the end, very little went well for the Cats, as they were outplayed from the tip -- not dramatically so, at any particular moment, but decisively over time.

Game thread comments, lowlights, and highlights after the jump.

GAME THREAD COMMENTS

Ourdaywillcome -- 23: the number of blood vessels Larry Brown is about to blow in the dressing room.

Stevarino -- Maybe the Magic have better offensive flow with Howard out. The ball doesn’t get stuck in the post where there’s almost always a double team and little ball movement. Orlando seems to be more free-flowing and attacking.

BAD

-- Theo Ratliff and Nazr Mohammed have vastly different skill sets. We don't expect Nazr to do much on defense, while that's pretty much all Theo can do, but neither was particularly effective on D. Even though Mohammed did fine on offense, especially given the opposition, his frighteningly ineffective defense is cause for concern. During the regular season, Tyson Chandler's history of foot injury virtually ensures he won't play more than 30 minutes per game, but this is the playoffs. If you're ever going to stretch a player's minutes, now is the time. For two straight games, Chandler's been the best center we have, and he probably has the highest true talent level, anyway. Play him.

-- I don't know if Larry Hughes definitively played his way out of the rotation, but in just under 6 minutes, he shot 0-3, turned it over once, and committed a foul. Good times. To his credit, he did get 3 rebounds.

-- The Cats turned it over 21 times. That includes 7 from Stephen Jackson and 5 from Boris Diaw.

-- The Bobcats shot under 40% from the field through the first three quarters. I'm not sure what they were doing in the fourth, or if the Magic let up, but if it's in their control, here's hoping the Cats identify what that is, because they brought their FG% for the game up to respectable levels in that final period. Not only that, but their defense got kicked up a notch.

GOOD

-- Gerald Wallace made the leap this year from above average starter to All Star, and he's continued that stellar play in his first two postseason games. He started slowly, but ended up with 15 points on only 7 attempts, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks.

-- The turnovers sucked, but Jax shot the way we'll need him to if the Cats are going to extend the series, putting up 27 points.

-- Raymond Felton and D.J. Augustin did an admirable job defending Nelson and Jason Williams. On offense, Augustin hit his two three-point attempts, and the two combined for only 1 turnover all game.

Were not going to win anything if we don't start playing offense

Put it like this… Our offense is offensive!

its not so bad if you like watching exceptional defense.

i’m a magic fan but i really like this bobcats team. if they can figure out a way to snag a scoring big man, watch out. s-jax/predator are badass but expecting them to completely carry a team offensively is a little much.

Its not so bad IF...

You don’t mind seeing Wallace as an offensive force in the paint, Jackson averaging over 20pts, Diaw racking up assists, DJ finding his 3pt jumper, and Raymond hitting clutch game winning shots… and then do none of the above int he playoffs

sigh....

Turnovers, Larry Hughes, and intimidation.

no. thats not the name of a basketball book. thats the reasons why we lost.

Turnovers. cant say enough about them. you commit them, and you will lose. there is no “probably”—it is a definitely WILL. the Cats just had way too many. now, if this was because of good defense or a bad offense, i’ll leave it up to you.

Larry Hughes. seriously? i think he’s been hanging out with Allen Iverson, because he totally thinks that he still has it. i really wish LB would take any thought/play that included Hughes and throw it in the fires of hell, because thats where they belong. Hughes coughed up the ball, jacked up poor shots, and never once solidified himself as an option to actually get possession of the ball.
if we thought Sam Vincent was bad, then we must be spoiled. Hughes is worse.

Intimidation. yes, i know Dwight Howard is huge. i know that. but that doesnt mean that you have to JACK UP SHOTS. i truly believe that if the Cats drove the ball more, we would have won this game due to free-throws and faster foul trouble. it was frustrating to see the Cats NOT put the ball on the floor and instead launch the ball from wherever they were.
not to mention, it seemed like nobody was aware of the 24second clock. nobody made an effort to throw the ball in the general direction of the basket when it got down to 2. there were even PASSES when it got down to 2 seconds.

overall, a very frustrating game for both teams, but more so for us Cats fans. i know we’re capable of better play, but i really hope that it’s because of some jitters.

i also forgot to give props to Predator. he played like the defensive player of the year tonight. nice monster blocks.

Sigh... disappointed

At least Gerald is impressive. But guys, please don’t give up hope. It’s likely we’ll lose the series, but it’s not over just yet. I may be down, but I’m not out.

Ps. Magic fans, props. Your team was obviously better tonight. They played tight d, had the shots falling, Vince Carter took few outside jumpers; in short, Orlando looked good. I can be man enough to admit it.

Well.

This is nothing new. The Bobcats struggle when they let their rim-oriented offense be changed by shotblocking. They didn’t attack early, and dug themselves in a hole.

Gotta go win two now.

Just have to hold serve.

The Cats just need to come home to Charlotte and win these next two homes games. If they can steady the ship and get the series back to 2-2 then there is still ample opportunity to advance.

It should be a totally different game back at the Cable Box.

My glass remains half full...but I'm SO thirsty!

I still want to see D.J. shoot a LOT more. He’s our best scoring option off the bench, and scoring has been anemic in this series, so…yeah. He nailed the the only 2 threes that he took, and he looked comfortable out there (not that his facial expression ever changes), which is more than I can say for a lot of his teammates.

12 turnovers between 2 starters will kill us every time.

Theo had 3 fouls and 2 points/rebounds/blocks/assists/steals COMBINED. I know Nazr disappears on defense sometimes, but not on BOTH ends of the floor. As this point, I’m almost ready to put Theo in the same boat with Hughes. Almost, but…

2nd quarter play-by-play
6:31 Larry Hughes personal foul (J.J. Redick draws the foul)
6:31 J.J. Redick makes free throw 1 of 2
6:31 J.J. Redick makes free throw 2 of 2
6:22 Larry Hughes misses 25-foot three point jumper
6:20 Tyrus Thomas offensive rebound 18-29
6:11 Larry Hughes misses 24-foot three point jumper

Way to come out of your shell, Hughes! You’ll prove me wrong yet!

We took 2 more shots than Orlando did, shot 42% from 3s, matched their rebound totals…it really boils down to turnovers. During the closing moments of the 2nd quarter, I half-expected McHale to start whistling the Harlem Globetrotters theme.

And where has our Raymond gone? C’mon, Ray, it’s your contract year, remember?

Oh…this was supposed to be a optimistic post. Umm…two home games coming up (yay?). Jack was 50% from the field. Henderson cleans up really well. And most importantly, we have YET to see our “A” game this postseason. It’s not like we’re getting crushed while putting our best foot forward. Hopefully the Cable Box will bring it out the best in the Cats.

by Newsinz on Apr 22, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Every "first timer" to the playoffs starts out thinking, "yes we can!"

and winds up in front of a bank of microphones saying, “we thought we could.”

My biggest disappointment last night was not that the Bobcats lost the game. That in itself should say something about just how much the biggest letdown broke my heart.

No, my biggest disappointment last night was that the worst of the team I love was on display. All season long we died in here on the nights that the Bobcats played rec-league ball. Usually it was just a day after all the pieces came together and the team kicked the living snot out of the Cavs or some other member of the “elite.” I had quietly dreaded the game where the hapless Bobcats would show up on national television. I knew they’d have one in them at some point. They started off game one that way but recovered well enough to sustain credibility. No such luck last night. With few exceptions, it was the Charlotte Embarrassment that was on the court. Turnovers, empty possessions, almost all the usual suspects were present. The notable absence was poor free throw shooting and the only thing that spared us from it was the fact that the refs decided to do us a favor and limit our trips to the stripe. On the plus side, we got the bad one out of our system on a road court. A performance like last night on home court is a season ender.

As always seems to be the case, Jackson poured in the points and any time he launched the ball toward the hole he did it with all the confidence of a 70% shooter. He also handed the ball over far too many times. Wallace played as if his only real goal was to make people run out of ways to say “incredible.” National viewers are starting to realize what we’ve known all along – with Gerald Wallace the “that’s the play of the year” comment is only good for a day or so because he’s gonna top it the next time he puts on his sneaks. The rest of the team? A mixed bag at best.

Last night ROF could have been called KillLarryHughes.com
He was on the court for less than ten seconds before he made his impact felt. It was amazing to watch and he was an indispensable asset to the team. The problem there was, the team was Orlando. Any semblance of an offense was forgotten and his brief stint on the court seemed to last forever for Bobcats fans. When a player is able to cause the fans to think, “God, I miss Acie Law,” something is deeply, deeply wrong.

So the Magic go up 2-0 as many expected they would. But after the game I bet they were quietly grateful that they didn’t have to work very hard to earn the win. I’m not degrading the Magic here either. They’re a tough team. But last night the Nets and the Timberwolves could have beaten the Bobcats. Orlando didn’t require a big game from their beasts because the Bobcats just rolled over for them. All the Magic needed to do was focus on Wallace and Jackson and they had it made.

A note to Magic fans. I expect y’all are lurking even if you haven’t had much to say since the game. First, thank you for that. Bobcats fans are hurting a bit today for reasons you understand, but also for reasons you couldn’t possibly know about unless you’ve spent the entire season living and dying by the Bobcats’ fortunes. You expected to win this series but on some level I suspect you’re wondering why it hasn’t been more competitive. It’s coming. Our team has come back to Charlotte after a ridiculous loss a number of times this year. If you take a look at our home record you’ll see that the Cable Center does something to the Bobcats. They walk in the door battered and defeated, walk on the court, and become almost unstoppable. The fans have come to depend on it and if you’ve been wondering when the Bobcats are actually going to show up for this series you will likely get your answer on Saturday afternoon.

It’s a good thing to have more talent than you need and for the first two games your team has been in that lucky position. But if things go the way they have all season for the Cats, your guys are going to get tested this weekend. They’ll need all their skills and a side of fries.

At least I hope so – and it isn’t just a matter of hometown pride.

Yeah, pride is a factor. The critics have crapped on this town and this team all season long and those of us that have been fans from the start have even taken a lot of smack from our own friends and family. We’ve raved about our Bobcats for half a decade while everyone looked at us as deluded. This is our first chance to be right about our team and for us respect is like an oasis in a very big and dry desert. We’re all thirsty as hell. But it’s more than that. If you read the recent archive of this blog you will see that most of us were realistic enough to expect the Magic to prevail. But we wanted to give you guys a fight. When your squad moved on to the next round we want them to feel like their next opponents were easier to beat than the Charlotte team they just finished up with. We wanted your team to be bloody and challenged. We wanted them to be carrying hard-won momentum. Most of all, we wanted a rematch next season that made your Magic look at us with some apprehension.

I’ll be at the game on Saturday and of course I’ll be hoping for a Charlotte win. But in some ways I’m hoping that win or lose, the team I love represents itself in a way that displays all the things that made me fall in love with them in the first place – heart, drive, skill, and the absolute refusal to accept defeat regardless of the odds. It really is something to see. It’s enough to make a man that can’t even walk to his mailbox anymore drive 70 miles each way and endure the stares of pity as he negotiates his wheelchair through 17 thousand other believers in the cult of the Cats.

From a lurking Magic fan

Well I for one do understand where you’re coming from and what you’re feeling. I have been a Magic fan for almost 20 years, grew up with them (I’m 24), and went through a lot of rough patches. Being another small market town, we usually get the short end of the media stick, and even still do sometimes considering our skill level.

However, I have seen what the Bobcats are capable of with wins over the Magic, Cavs, and Lakers over the past couple years. I like they’re toughness and energy and Wallace and Jackson are ballers. I also liked Jackson’s postgame interview. I don’t expect the Cats to win the series – as I’m sure many of you would sadly agree – but I won’t be surprised if they steal a game in Charlotte because they are a pretty decent team with great wings and will be very energized playing at home. You’re probably still about 3 years from contending, but stick with it. I can say from personal experience that sticking through the crappy times is part of what makes the winning times so great. (And there were many crappy times for the Magic, and even when we thought things were going well last time, Shaq and Penny ditched us and we had to suck for another 10 years.)

Looking forward to another scrappy game Saturday. Good luck.

Same reason in politics for example you read things from multiple parties. I like to get both sides of a story, so I can made a more educated opinion. I don’t like trolls anymore than the next guy, but I didn’t feel like I was coming in here to start trouble. Only trying to sympathize because I’ve seen a lot of Cats fans feeling down.

So…if by some chance, if you guys take us out of the playoffs, I’ll be the first to admit that I have been a Dwight Howard fan…for his defense…and he truly looks like he has fun playing the game. I like that. I like the Magic more than any of the other teams from the East, so I’ll be rooting for you guys, if you survive us…

I feel much better.

I went over to OPP and read both game threads and a few of the other commentaries and didn’t see any of the ROF guys stirring up trouble. I think most of the guys here would have called out anyone who trolled y’alls blog.
I can only think of one or two people that would even consider such a thing and they were trolls here first and got frozen out by the regular crew. We try to pull out our own ingrown toenails.

I stuck my head in the door for the same reason you came over here. I haven’t even registered my nick at OPP (although I plan to so I can post congratulations and best wishes if the Magic prevail in the series) so I can’t post there as of yet.

If you snoop around here a bit, you will see that there have been a few Magic fans that have crossed the line. I won’t mention names because that’s not my way. There have also been several like yourself that have been decent and very welcomed. My whole attitude is that we should join together and fight the real enemy of this series – the referees. They are either calling things so tight that neither team can breathe or they are allowing players to literally mug each other without calling the foul. To me the most blatant example was the obvious rabbit punch thrown at Wallace in game one but there have been examples on both sides. A little consistency would be nice! Also, the refs seem to be dividing the halfs by being biased toward one team for half the game and then swinging the other way and favoring the other for the second half. It wrecks it for all of us.

Spend a quarter at our in game thread some time in the next couple of games. You will see us poke fun at Magic players. It’s impossible to look at Gortat without commenting on that monstrous nose of his for example. It’s also going to be open season on your coach. I’ve read y’alls threads too remember, so I know what gets said about our Coach Brown.
But you’ll also see that we tend to be even more cruel when our own players play poorly. It’s all in good fun and it’s just fans being fans.

We really do like it when fans from visiting teams come in and participate. But if someone shows up to gloat or starts trolling and baiting, they won’t find us to be the friendly type – even if they’re locals and not visiting from another team’s city.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 23, 2010 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Another obvious mugging

Game 2: Barnes literally knocking Jackson’s headband down around his eyes during a missed shot attempt. No foul called.

Did anyone else see Jax pleading his case after the next play; headband still covering all of on eye and part of the other. I literally laughed out loud at the thought of what he might have been/probably was saying to the official.

TNT showed a replay and it clearly showed the blatant swipe to the head. One of those three officials had to have seen it right? They just swallowed their whistles? Or was it incompetence? Conspiracy? Doesn’t matter. It’s all scripted and David Stern drew the winner out of a hat two weeks ago.

by dudemanhey on Apr 23, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

They can't see everything - there are only three of them.

Refs miss things all the time and (sadly) it is something that all teams have to live with. The only way to possibly make it better would be to add another referee to each game, which probably won’t happen due to financial reasons.

by MagicMark on Apr 23, 2010 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Ourdays' suggestion about a panel of off-court TV refs

Two of 3 off-court refs hit the button and the whistle blows. They can also overrule on court calls. The NBA can afford additional refs, on court or off. If the NBA needs to save money to pay refs, they can trim the rosters to 14 players. Something needs to be done for the integrity of the game.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 23, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree with there being financial constraints.

This is a very profitable business that generates hundreds of millions of dollars in profits each year.
Although I believe David Stern is directly responsible (by the very nature of his job) for rectifying this monstrous problem, I don’t think he directly conspires to rig the playoffs. His refusal to do anything but punish and bully anyone that mentions the situation is beyond absurd. What I DO believe he’s done is create a system that gives a decided advantage to the teams in the larger markets, but it is still a game and a low tier team is capable of an upset. The “Cinderella” team cliche is a powerful audience lure in its own right and Stern can spin it for maximum effect. His big fear, I believe, is having two small-market teams in the NBA finals. It costs millions in lost ratings, lost merchandise sales, and even losses from diminished video and DVD sales.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 24, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

The home court advantage during the regular season

also needs a look. Home court is an advantage, but when you look at the home and road records for every team, the disparity is a bit much. A theory may be that fans who see a win at home are more apt to attend another game.
