Gameday Preview Charlotte Bobcats at Orlando Magic -- Eastern Conference Playoffs Round 1, Game 1

Pump Up Music: Aladdin -- "A Whole New World" Rick Ross -- "Hustlin'"

The Big Picture: The Charlotte Bobcats have a miniscule chance of winning this series from the Orlando Magic. To be successful, they've got to execute to the best of their abilities, and good fortune must rain upon them in torrents. Any analysis that results in a prediction that the Cats are likely to win the series is based on wishful thinking, but if no one ever wished upon a star, we'd never even reach the clouds.

Star-divide

Here's how to rationalize a Bobcats path to victory.

Point 1. Orlando has the fourth-best per-possession offense in the NBA and the third-best per-possession defense. The Cats' strength is defense, too. The Magic play at about an average pace, while the Bobcats tend to walk the ball up the floor and grind out possessions. Both of those elements will serve to keep scores low, which tremendously favors the underdog. With fewer possessions and fewer total points, there's a greater chance of fluky variance, of this stretch of games being the ones during which Gerald Wallace morphs into Shawn Kemp (circa 1996), Stephen Jackson finds his inner Larry Bird (circa 1986), Dwight Howard becomes DeAndre Jordan, and Jameer Nelson starts channeling Earl Boykins.

Point 2. The Bobcats are better now than their total-season statistics indicate. The difference is marginal, but noteworthy. The Cats finished second in the league in blocked shots, ninth in the league in opponents' FG% at the rim, and second in the league in opponents' eFG% from three. What does all that mean? It means that even though roughly half of the minutes at the center position were played by Nazr Mohammed and Boris Diaw, they still managed to put together elite defensive totals for the entire season. Neither Mohammed nor Diaw is exactly a defensive powerhouse at center, but that's pretty much all Theo Ratliff and Tyson Chandler do, and they're getting the lion's share of minutes at center now. Beware underestimating this defense. With a great shotblocker behind them at all times, Crash 'n Jax are free to be a little more aggressive on the perimeter, improving all aspects of the on-ball defense.

Ft.Mill Bobcat -- The critical period to look at is January through March 2010. The team records from January 1 to March 31 are: Magic 29 – 14, Bobcats 27 – 17.

Point 3. I know it seems like Orlando got a little bit better this year, and it's entirely possible, even likely, that letting Hedo Turkoglu go and trading for Vince Carter was the most correct thing to do (I love me some Courtney Lee, but I also love me some Ryan Anderson). However, last year, Hedo was what made them a special team, not just an excellent team. With Hedo, Lee, and Nelson out there splitting ballhandling duties, they presented an unconventional matchup issue for every team that faced them. Don't get me wrong: I'd be happy to have Vinsanity, Matt Barnes, Mickael Pietrus, and J.J. Redick as my team's wing corps, but I'd trade that in a heartbeat for 2009 Hedo, 2010 Barnes, 2010 Pietrus, and 2010 Redick. The Cats know who's going to be bringing the ball up. They know who's going to be covering which guys. They know how they're going to defend the Magic offense. There will be no harrowing help-or-don't-help decisions when Hedo drives the lane. Orlando may have simplified what they do to their own benefit, but it made them easier to defend for elite defenses, too.

maverick24 -- The truth is, without Stephen Jackson the Bobcats aren’t here right now, and without Stephen Jackson the Bobcats have no chance in this series.

Keys to Victory: I mean this with all sincerity, and with no irony: we need luck. Lots of it. As much as I love finding clarity amid the blizzard of chance, it still remains that the Bobcats' talent level is lacking in comparison to the Magic's, and a series of things we can't predict will have to happen for the Cats to pull out the win. So, luck it is. Please.

StudMuffin15 -- Throughout the season, few teams played in a zone defense, but when they did, the Cats showed that they have no idea about playing zone-offense. If the Magic, or any other team, decides to use a zone, then the Cats need to learn on the fly how to beat it.

Newsinz -- We have to convert Superman’s potential dunks into trips to the free throw line.

Ourdaywillcome -- The Orlando Magic are a good enough team to take advantage of any lapse in concentration their opponents give them. Our 3-headed Cerberus at the Center position will have to lead the charge by controlling the paint and forcing the Magic to rely on their outside shooting. Any time you see Vince Carter able to penetrate the passing lanes at will you can expect the result to be a Bobcats loss – and we’re only allowed 3 of them.

Jew Unit -- I think the most important matchup is going to be Tyrus Thomas and Boris Diaw against Rashard Lewis. Diaw is significantly less mobile than Thomas, and with a long range shooting four, we could see a lot of a Felton-Wallace-Jackson-Thomas-random center lineup because I feel Diaw will get trashed by Lewis.

Details That May Interest .08% of You: Contrary to popular belief, if you search for "Ron Jeremy" on Basketball-Reference.com, you will not be taken to Stan Van Gundy's page.

alwalte2 -- Redick’s middle name is "Clay," the origin of which is that his dad is a successful potter. (He also will be the most hated player in this series)

Prediction: Magic in 6

Plurality RoF Reader Prediction (as of this post): Bobcats in 6

Note on future projects: Finally, I know I said I'd do a podcast before the Cats' playoff games, but I was discouraged by the experimental one done earlier this year. The point was not to give me another soapbox, which it was that first time and which I'm afraid it'd be again, but to get you more involved, to make it easier for folks to get their voices heard by using another medium. So, let's try something else.

Those of you going to Game 3 at the Cable Box, I will be there with the Official Girlfriend of Rufus on Fire, and we will bring a camera in order to take one picture: the view from our seats. I'll ask again closer to game time, but if you're going, please consider taking a photo of the view from your seat during the game, because I think it'd be interesting to put all those pictures side by side. (Idea shamelessly lifted from the SB Nation New York Mets blog, Amazin' Avenue.)

Funny line dropped by Dwight Howard regarding his hunger for the title....

"I’m very hungry. You guys should see the plate I have in there waiting on me to demolish now," he said, laughing. "I have a full plate of ribs, chicken. Then I have another plate of vegetables. We’re all hungry. Stan, he’s hungry. He’s been hungry all season."

I love the fact that he’s hilarious first of all. Second of all I love the fact that he has convinced his entire team to call him Stan and in retrospect that should have been my .8% fact.

Virtually very other playoff team is pulling for the BobCats

cause no one wants to have to play D12 and the long bombs!

Orlando's talent level only outweighs Charlotte at the Center position.

As for the other starters, Felton vs. Jameer, Jackson vs. Carter, Wallace vs. Barnes, and DIaw vs. Lewis, I would be fine with taking any of our players, not so much Diaw over Lewis though. As for the bench, I’d take our bench over theirs anyday, without being a homer at all. D.J. Augustin is better than the geriatric combo of Anthony Johnson and Jason Williams. I’d take a producing Gerald Henderson and Larry Hughes over JJ Redick and Pietrus, not so much Pietrus. And the Magic have no one that can compete with Chandler and Tyrus off their bench talent wise, at all, not even Gortat. The only clear advantage this team has over us is Howard vs our plethora of centers, but I like our chances with him over a 7 game series since we have enough bodies to keep fresh legs on the floor and neutralize him as much as possible.

Lol, it's only narrow until the Cats get in the Magic's ass.

Then all of the sudden, it’s going to be, “well, they are a talented team with a better coach, Orlando is going to have to be on their A game, this is the playoffs”. Trust me, I’m not going to be switching up anything. 5 years ago I would’ve put Felton and Nelson on the same level, why not today? Before the season started, I would’ve said give me Jackson over Carter anytime. Why not today? Before the season I would’ve put Barnes and Wallace close to the same level, now I know better. Check up on these dudes man. They aren’t a team of scrubs the Magic are going to run over.

Charlotte has a nice collection of pieces

and has probably the best old school coach. With all dur respect ot Larry Brown, the game he plays is 10 years old. Stan VanGundy coaches the modern game. Charlotte lives and dies by the long two, the most inefficient shot in basketball. The Magic go to the paint or to the 3-point line, the two most efficient shots in the game. It is no mistake that The ’Cats made the playoffs, and again, my congratulations, but the ’Cats style of play cannot compete with the top teams. The last of a post offense and too many long two point shots leaves you in an 8 point hole before the tipoff.

with the old school gameplan.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Apr 18, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

so....

The cats can’t shoot 3s? Last I checked, Jackson, diaw, d.j., and Hughes were all reliable shooters and Wallace and felton had made great strides on their outside shooting this year. And the most efficient shot is the free throw. Almost every non center on our team is a slasher capable of gettin to the line and making shots. Howard will get to the line a lot, but will he make them.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Apr 18, 2010 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

the free throw is only efficient if you get to the line

the most efficient shots from the floor are in the paint and the three,

The Cats shot 1331 threes and made 460 (34.6%)
The Magic shot 2241 and made 841 (37.5%)
That a difference of 4.6 threes a game. The Cats don’t shoot many and are a little below average when they do.

Free throws the Cats were 1637 for 2180 (75.1%) the Magic 1575 of 2176 (72.4%)
A difference of a point a game.

The Bobcats allowed opponents to shoot 33.8% from the 3 point line

This is the 2nd lowest 3 point % in the NBA.
The Magic allowed opponents to shoot 36.3%. 8th highest in the NBA.

Bobcats allowed opponents to shoot 74.3% from the FT line while going to the line 20.9 times a game. This is the lowest percent allowed in the NBA. Magic allowed opponents to shoot 75.4% from the FT line while attempting 22.3 FTs a game. Middle of the pack.

Magic Fan. You've been sleeping on the Cats too long

The Bobcats get to the line.

Your comparisons aren’t entirely useful. I’ll agree that they do say something. But they don’t speak to how the Bobcats and Magic play each other.

Did the Magic make 4.6 more threes every time they played the Bobcats this season?

Thomas, Theo, and a finally healthy Chandler are going to allow the Bobcats to do a much better job of guarding the Magic’s 3pt shooters.

by and1droid on Apr 18, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

For the 4 games

Charlotte’s steller 3-point defense held Orlando to 45 of 128 on 3’s, 35.2%

Orlando’s sloppy 3-point defense allowed a sterling 20 of 68 or 29.4%.

No the Magic did not make 4.6 more 3’s per gam, they made 6.5more per game, in fact it was 7,7,5,6.

More useful for you?

I think you're right about the starters CB

The thing is, w/ D-12, we’re talking about super star, all world, elite talent. He’s just too good for us to really overcome…Unless we don’t allow him to play. Foul him, make him pick up his dribble, make him leave the paint on defense (less opportunity to rebound and block shots), get him in foul trouble.

It can be done, but it’s a tall task for sure.

I can’t agree w/ you about the bench. The second string front court is about an even match. Chandler is going to be playing Howard a lot so we can’t exactly call him a bench player. Redick and Pietrus have shown more production than any of our second string wings.

Bench, based on experience and depth: edge goes to Orlando.

by and1droid on Apr 18, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Their bench is just garbage to me.

I’m sorry, but J.J. Redick has always been garbage to me, well, since he got to the NBA. Gortat is decent, but he doesn’t even get to play. How big of a threat can you be when you can’t get on the court? Pietrus is decent coming off the bench, I like his game. And Johnson and Williams are steady, but, they’re both approaching 40 fast. Meanwhile, my analysis of our bench shows we have an energy center (how many teams can say that) with Chandler and another athletic energy guy with Thomas. Both, very young and ready to contribute for tournament time. Then, we have D.J. finally coming into his own, and Larry Hughes who can play three positions. Don’t forget that we can buy minutes from Henderson and Brown here and there. We could also have Nazr and Diop ready to come in and play a few solid minutes of rough ball with Dwight. Our bench is superior to theres. The production is a confusing stat by both benches.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Apr 18, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Production matters

Other than D.J. no other guard has shown he can score the ball like Redick is capable of. Redick is no starter, but he can get 15 points out of nowhere if you’re not careful.

Yea we got Larry Hughes. I don’t hate him like most people, but he’s a volume shooter.

Hendo and D.Brown are still running on potential. I don’t expect them to see much burn or be well prepared to play when they do get in the game.

Gortat plays when he has to. Orlando paid big to keep him. The guy would have been a starter on the Mavs team this season. Remember? You haven’t even mentioned Bass. The dude may see more time in playoff style, grind it out games.

by and1droid on Apr 18, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you should re-evaluate the JJ Redick/Larry Hughes comment.

JJ Redick was garbage, but the last two seasons he has emerged as a really solid bench player. He’s much more efficient than our go-to bench scorer…..ahem, Larry Hughes.

Also, JJ Redick played in all 82 games, averaging 22 minutes per game for the Magic this season. Redick’s shooting 44% from the field and 40% from 3, averaging 15.7 pts per 36 minutes.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/redicjj01.html

Larry Hughes, during his brief stint with us this year is not so sparkling. He’s shooting 35% from the field and 30% from 3 averaging 13 pts per 36 minutes.

"Minuscule chance?"

David, your preview is neither the work of a fan nor a realist. It’s going to be a tough road and the Magic definitely hold the edge, but the Bobcats have yet to peak and are still on the ascent. They’ve made steady progress and their season record against Orlando is a prime example of that. Each time we played the Magic we played them tougher and handled them better until we finally beat them. The Bobcats were among the worst road teams in the league during the first half of the season but by the end of March they had become much more adept on other courts.

The playoffs are a different breed of animal, we all know that. Experience matters and coaching becomes a much larger factor than during the regular season. The Magic have far more maturity than the Bobcats do and that gives them a decided edge. The chemistry that the Bobcats have developed is still new and fragile and it will be a lot easier for Orlando to rattle Charlotte’s cage than vice-versa. But Steve “the hedgehog” Van Gundy isn’t fit to carry Larry Brown’s dry cleaning, let alone stand equal as a coach. Brown can out think and out strategize Van Gundy easily. Will that advantage be enough to offset the Magic’s aforementioned maturity? I really don’t think so, which is why I picked the Magic to take the series. But I think it’s going to be a near thing and the Magic will be tested and pushed to their limits.

A Bobcats victory in this series is predicated upon a very simple and achievable plan. They need to beat the Magic once in Orlando and then hold home court by winning the games at the Cable Box. I think that winning in Florida is very doable and I believe they will walk on the court next Saturday with the series locked at 1-1. The way I see it though, the immaturity of the Bobcats will do them in and no matter how well LB plans, schemes, and counters Van Gundy, he still needs his players to execute and the Cats break down on that level far too often. Orlando will be ready when it happens and the Bobcats’ will lose at home.

I see the Magic winning the series – but it will be a close thing. The Bobcats don’t need torrents of good fortune to rain down on them in order to win. They need discipline and I fear that they simply don’t have enough of it yet.

The Bobcats aren’t going to be crushed, they’ll defeat themselves with lapses in ball control and unforced errors. It’s been their weakness all season long – even after they “gelled” toward the end of the season. It’s a pity too, because if they can manage to get past Orlando, the second round should be an easier “get” for them and a Conference Finals would be a very real possibility.

It’s pretty unlikely we’ll win four against Orlando. But just as focus lapses have been the bane of the Bobcats, their unusual ability to defy logic and defeat the league elite has been their salvation. They’ve pulled off those unlikely victories almost as often as they’ve fallen to teams like the Nets. They’ve done it often enough that I’m pinning my hopes on it. I won’t be the slightest bit surprised to see it happen and I’ll leap at the chance to admit I was wrong to doubt them. We’ll find out soon enough.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Apr 18, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

precisely

“Good fortune” is not a requisite element. Not in a seven-game series.

(Unless the refs suddenly deciding to call everything Superman does really really tight, resulting in his getting into early foul trouble in a number of games can be considered “fortunate” and that kind of systematic interference would almost have to be intentional, something which Stern’s office would absolutely not allow. If it appeared Howard were being unjustly treated, VG’s howling would reach Stern’s ears before the second half and it would stop immediately.)

Yet even without such “good fortune” the Cats should be quite capable of taking two, maybe three, and making the rest close. Unfortunately, just as articulated above, it’s in those final-second finishes and overtime games that their discipline has historically tended to falter. However, that raises the question as to how much history is relevant? In April they won the close ones— Det by 4, NO by 1, Mil by 1— does that mean they’ve figured it out? Perhaps. Used to be that the key shot would somehow come down to Ray at the 3-point arc but now that’s not the top option. And now it’s just as likely if not more so that the last desperate shot comes down to the other guys heaving up the long shot, which the Cats defend exceedingly well.

So they’ve got plenty of life. Slow it down, foul the big guy, slow it down some more, foul him again. Scores in the 80s would be nice. Mostly a matter of mental toughness, which LB and certainly Cap’n Jack possess in trumps.

The key to this series is boris IMO

if diaw plays to his full potential passing good and hitting some threes instead of laying a turd on the game then i think that bobcats have a good chance of taking this and hopefully JAX can make love to pressure like he claims he does…dont want to see another 5-22 game from him : S and the bobcats cant afford that kind of shooting from him…if he isnt hitting his shots he should pass it to say Crash slashing into the lane…Crash needs to get to the line and hit them…i think the positive surprise in this whole series is larry hughes…IF he doesnt jack up ill advised shots and plays lock down defense on DUI reddick and nelson. I could go on but im no expert. This is my first post here on ROF :D (cheers). I have been reading ROF for almost 8 months now but never got around to posting…so i know each of you quite well i would think (Procton or w/e has to be the MOST negative severely pessimistic human being i have met in my life and i think Ourdaywillcome has the most insightful be it long posts i have seen..keep it up Ourday. it's not so much pessimism

As innate argumentativeness. There are some people who are destined to be attorneys (and some who believe they should be attorneys but who are actually destined to not quite get admitted into a decent law school or to not quite pass the bar.)* They all share the common trait of obnoxious provocative argumentativeness. The subject and context of the argument are essentially irrelevant; all that matters is the thrill of confrontation. It’s easier to argue a side with which one is practiced but the truly pathologically contrarian can swing either way. The master debater debates masterfully, regardless of purpose— in fact, there is in reality no purpose other than the provocation itself. The person who posts to provoke on one forum will post similarly on many other forums with a similar level of vehemence and will engender more or less the similar (desired) response from others in the community.

*(There are many successful attorneys who will play in cyberspace in their spare time, but I will testify— anecdotally, admittedly— that most will do so with a bit less passion over time as their emotional need for intellectual combat is satisfied by their professional pursuits; the frustrated wanna-be on the other hand raises the stakes in cyberspace because they have no other acceptable oulet for their aggression.)

by bugjackblue on Apr 18, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

And once you understand the semantics and tactics of such argumentative individuals...

It can even be fun to engage the debate.
