Charlotte Bobcats win despite resting starters, 99-95

The Charlotte Bobcats were without their starting point guard and gave extra rest to their other starters, yet they still managed to eke out a victory over the Detroit Pistons, 99-95.

GAME THREAD COMMENTS

Ourdaywillcome -- Jacks is playing like it's Christmas morning...

StudMuffin15 -- I think D.J. got his swagg back when he decided to wear the tube socks.

BAD

-- As noted in the comments section of a previous post, there are rumors going around about Gerald Henderson's relationship with Larry Brown. Obviously, something is amiss. In short, the rumor -- again, I have zero confirmation; this is entirely a rumor based on hearsay -- is that Henderson actively resisted an assignment to the NBDL, so the Cats must have saved face for everyone by keeping him on the NBA roster. The thing is, this kind of story only lives because the playing time pattern matches the narrative. If Brown simply thinks Henderson sucks, then Gerald would have played in this game, since Ajinca, Diop, and Felton were the obvious inactive candidates. Yet, Henderson sat, garnering the DNP-CD. If he did resist the D-League assignment, I don't blame him, because as useful as the D can be, and as much as I believe in it as a player development/rehab tool, right now a first round pick who spends time at that level wears a scarlet letter. It's just sad that it's not working out.

GOOD

-- In 40 minutes, D.J. Augustin didn't shoot all that well, going 6-12 from the field and not getting to the line at all, but he did distribute well, dishing 9 assists.

-- Can't... type... those... words... Larry Huges... ... ... exploded for 18 points on 6-10 from the field, including 4-6 from three. Crikey. My fingers are burning!

-- Overall, no regular starter played more than 34 minutes, no one got hurt, and the Cats sent the crowd home happy with a win. Sweet.

David, you put

“— Can’t… type… those… words… Larry Huges… … … exploded for 18 points on 6-10 from the field, including 4-6 from three. Crikey. My fingers are burning!” in the wrong spot. It’s supposed to go under the BAD section. After all, if he throws up a few games of being 0-10, maybe LB will quit playing him.

This was the perfect win.

Not in the sense of excellent play, but in terms of roster management.
As David pointed out, our starters got some rest, our bench got to stretch their legs a bit and get some game-time looks at the hoops and the floor, and perhaps most importantly, defend against someone that isn’t a teammate.
The Henderson mystery deepened because there were ample minutes available for the rookie and he still spent the night riding the pine. I don’t think anyone is going to know for sure what the truth is regarding the whole D-League “scandal” but something is definitely funky. LB yells a lot at Augustin but I think it’s because Brown sees the young man’s potential and is trying to drive him to meet his potential. Henderson however, might as well be the invisible man. Brown simply pretends he isn’t even there. Is it because LB didn’t get along with Gerald’s dad? Is it the D-League thing? Did they have an argument that the media didn’t witness? Or could it be that there is something wrong with Gerald’s work ethic? Who knows. But the DNP-CD he picked up tonight is a pretty strong indication that Gerald Henderson is number one on the S-List and I’m beginning to wonder if Brown will even give him minutes next season as a sophomore. I’ve pretty certain Henderson has no future in the NBA unless it’s in a different town. I’d also bet good money that if Henderson skips the summer league that the sweat moppers will spend more time on an NBA court the GH will in a Bobcats uniform.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 10, 2010 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

There is no way Henderson is going to skip the Summer League

That would be really stupid. Denying a brief stint in the D-League is stupid too, but I understand that professional athletes have a lot of pride and they don’t want to look like failures to the general public. I definitely agree that Henderson should have played tonight. If the Cats were a higher profile team, ESPN would be all over this story.

I don’t think Henderson has a work ethic problem. The Cats wouldn’t have drafted him if his work ethic was in question. Plus, he played collegiately for a coach that is pretty demanding. I don’t think Coach K would put up with a player who didn’t give his all.

Henderson needs to work on his handles and his jumper over the summer. If he does that, I think he plays 10-15 minutes a game next season. If not, he is probably going to be packaged with Chandler in a trade.

In watching the D-League, I can tell you...

that Henderson’s “short stint” would have literally been nothing media-wise compared to Hasheem Thabeet’s. When the #2 pick goes to the D-League earlier in the season, no one’s really watching when the #13 goes for a couple weeks. That being said, I still get it.

Interesting article on slate.com

It suggests several reasons why Duke players generally don’t do well in the NBA. One of the ~8 hypotheses discussed involved players being so driven under coach K yet losing that work ethic when they get to the pros and have to be more self-motivated.

You would expect LB to be able to provide more external drive than most NBA coaches, but its still a thought worth considering.

by and1droid on Apr 11, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

that makes no sense

not a duke fan at all, but plenty of duke players have had nba success… at least the ones that should’ve actually GONE to the nba… coach k is such an exceptional coach that he can take sometimes middling talent and make them look great, and more importantly, teach them the fundamentals that allow them to excel above young players who don’t have them

in the NBA, MOST players are fundamentally sound, and the ones that aren’t, make up for it with unnatural athleticism

so when Duke goes deep in the NCAA tournament, people automatically assume they have great players… occasionally they do, but typically it’s a bunch of good but not great players coming together to play as a team and focus on their strengths, while hiding their weaknesses as role players… and if you think about it, the majority of Duke players make it in the NBA as role players (see JJ Reddick, Chris Duhon, Shane Battier, Luol Deng etc).

Duke currently has the most players in the NBA right now with 14, by the way. Most of them are role players, with basically Carlos Boozer being the one exception since Elton Brand’s role now seems to be forgetting how to rebound.

I mean, pick any powerhouse program in the NCAA that sends a lot of their players to the pros? What percentage of their players go to the pros and excel based on what percentage of Duke players go pro and excel? Duke has had 51 NBA players, 14 of which who are currently in the NBA. Then you add guys who played at least 10,000 minutes in the NBA, like Gminski, Ferry, Laettner, Marin, Mullins, Dawkins, Banks, Verga, Denton and Lewis. So, of 51 players, you have 14 currently in the NBA, three of whom haven’t had time to make a name for themselves, and then 10 who made somewhat of a niche for themselves playing 10k minutes. That’s 24 of 51 players who have had some kind of real NBA success. And then there’s guys like Cherokee Parks, who managed to play in the NBA as a bench player for 8 years. If you also count guys who played in the NBA at least 5 years, then the list increases by 4. So basically you have 28 of 51 players who spent at least 5 years in the NBA or are currently on an NBA roster. Of them, you have six “stars”. Hill, Mullins, Brand, Boozer, Meggette and Verga. Or 12% of NBA players that become stars.

Compare that to any other school and tell me if you don’t get similar results? Let’s try UNC… 75 NBA players…. stars being Jordan, Carter, McAdoo, Cunningham, Jamison, Daugherty, Worthy, Davis, Stackhouse and Wallace. 10/75… 13%. Granted, UNC “stars” are far superior to Duke “stars”, but Brand, Hill and Boozer all have a legit shot at the Hall of Fame.

by adamcawa on Apr 12, 2010 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

I hate Duke, I'm a UNC fan to the heart,

but I always find it in my heart to give Duke respect because they are a North Carolina school as well. So, my respect in this instance extends to me talking about three other Duke players who could’ve been pretty good in the NBA, but injuries got to them early, Jay Williams, Bobby Hurley, Trajon Langdon.

Henderson isn't playing

That’s the bottom line. We can speculate why, but I’ll put that on the back burner. It’s really not that important to be concerned about as we are about to enter the playoffs. Hopefully, he will be a more valuable member of the team next year.

all i know is. we're in the playoffs

and getting solid production from everyone playing in the games. Naz is back. Tyson is playing the best ball of his career. Larry is…well, there, and hopefully not faking us out by playing well last night. DJ looked good(needs a defensive adjustment), but is gaining confidence and blowing by people. Gerald is Gerald. Jack is Jack, and Boris has been replaced by a consistency MACHINE. Tyrus will be fine for the Playoffs, and Theo is a defensive mound of awesome. I’m ready to give whoever we get in the first round ROYAL HELL! BOBCATS BABY!

The D-League is not always the answer...

keep in mind Henderson played at Duke. I hate Duke, but the players that come from there are typically very fundamentally sound players. The D-League is there to teach fundamentals and get players used to the pace of the NBA game. I don’t see it much benefitting Hendo, because A) I imagine coach K is better than any NBA D-League coach and B) what playing time he has seen, he does a decent job within the offense. On the contrary, I saw Derrick Brown miss help defense twice in the Detroit game, one time even the announcers called a “rookie mistake”. Does Derrick Brown understand the game better than Gerald Henderson? I doubt it.

Not to mention, our coach is Larry Brown. He’s one of the best “teachers” in the NBA, if not THE best. Many of you chalk Felton’s improvement up to Larry’s teaching. Well, if he can improve Raymond so much, if he can improve Wallace’s shot selection so much, if he can play Larry Hughes 20 minutes and STILL win, then why couldn’t he make Gerald Henderson an NBA caliber player?

by adamcawa on Apr 12, 2010 9:07 AM EDT reply actions

The D-League is designed to teach more than fundamentals

There are lots of fundamentally sound players in the D-league and I would venture to say that most of them play in the back court. Henderson needs to work on his jumper and his ball handling. He could do both in game situations while playing in the D-League. Coach K and Larry Brown are HOF coaches, but they can only do so much.

I think Henderson will eventually be a valuable member of the Bobcat organization. He needs work though and I really wish he would have swallowed his pride and played in Maine for a few weeks.

Larry Brown doesn't walk on water or feed the entire crowd at the Cable Center out of a basket of fish either.

When it comes to the Henderson situation all we can do is guess. We don’t have nearly enough facts and those that DO know the facts aren’t talking about it. It’s the single biggest question mark surround this team as far as the fans are concerned. But although it a big deal to Bobcats fans, if you go outside of Charlotte the majority of basketball fans aren’t even aware the situation exists. All we can say is that if the situation carries over to next season it’s likely that Gerald Henderson will have to try to catch on with some other team or learn to sell real estate or used cars.

Maybe Henderson has a problem with authority. Maybe he’s just not that good. Maybe he just got lost in the shuffle. Maybe he ran over Larry Brown’s dog. I wish he HAD gone to the D league. At least we would know what he can do and what areas of his game the Bobcats want him to be working on.

by Ourdaywillcome on Apr 12, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the situation is manufactured by people who want something to worry about

A rookie’s not playing minutes for a team trying to make its first playoff appearance ever: Shocking!

Not to mention that it’s Larry freaking Brown. His MO is turning struggling franchises into legit competitors and NOT playing rookies. Why is anybody surprised? At the onset of the year i did expect to see lots more of Henderson…but then the Cats traded for Jax…Henderson is gonna have to wait.

Also, i wish people would consider that the team does NOT have a dearth of draft picks in future years. This was supposed to be Henderson’s senior year at Duke anyway, why not just chill, enjoy the playoff run and look forward to seeing what Henderson (and Ajinca) can do next season?!

We don’t have draft picks to use in the immediate future, but we do have two former 1st round draft picks that have yet to been utilized. Just think of it as us developing these youngsters in-house and waiting for them to be ready, rather than drafting a player next year (and then still having to develop them. Most players are NOT Roy, or Durant, or even Darren Collison).

C’mon yall! Lets be pumped about the Bobcats’ VERY legitimate chances of beating Orlando, then ATL, then Cleveland in the Eastern Conference NBA playoffs!!!!

I think you're on to something!

Good Lord I never thought of the consequences! Nobody would spend $7 on $1.22 worth of nachos and cheese if they could have themselves some freshly created sea bass! I can see why management would put the leash on Larry there.

But the least he could do is walk on the beer. I think most people would opt to spend the money for a replacement brew even if it IS Larry Brown’s toejam foating in there!
