Bobcats Hold Off Warriors 101-90

The Charlotte Bobcats defeated the Golden State Warriors tonight, 101-90. Gerald Wallace played limited minutes because Larry Brown doesn't know how to handle foul trouble and benched him for much of the first half, but Crash still led the way with yet another double-double before being ejected near the end of the game. More on that later.

Among the others, Boris Diaw had as complete a game as you'll see from a big man, nearly recording a triple-double, and D.J. Augustin was the team's high scorer.

Apparently, everyone was at the game, so no game thread comments in this recap. Lowlights and highlights after the jump.

Star-divide

BAD

-- Stephen Jackson had one of his sketchy nights, scoring only 12 points on 16 shots, including going an abysmal 0-7 from three. Now, I'm not so hawkish about efficiency as to believe that Jackson is hurting the team by being an unrepentant gunner. Though probably irrational, since Jax ain't the greatest three point shooter around, opponents respect his ability to shoot from distance, which opens up the floor for everyone else. If all he's doing is maintaining that respect for his three by shooting again and again, then have at, Cap'n Jack. Don't get me wrong: he does a lot of other things well enough to justify inclusion in the lineup, but there is probably a point where he is taking too many shots. I don't know where that point is.

-- The Bobcats turned it over 19 times. That's the sort of thing that keeps a weak opponent legitimately in the game until the fourth quarter.

-- Time after time, Larry Brown sees a guy pick up two fouls in the first quarter, and then benches him until the second half. He did it tonight with Gerald Wallace. This shouldn't even be an issue, but... Kelly Dwyer laid it out long ago.

-- Wallace punched Anthony Tolliver. Okay, maybe he didn't "punch" him per se, but he definitely threw his forearm at Tolliver's chest or head, and he did it with malice. I expect a suspension.

-- This one's about the Warriors. Don Nelson played Corey Maggette only 24 minutes all game and benched him with 4 minutes to go in the fourth. Why? Who knows. He was only the Ws' best player on the floor. Also, kudos to Nelson for burying Ronny Turiaf behind Chris Hunter (who?) and Devean George. Helluva job, Nellie.

GOOD

-- The most incredible stat of the night? The Cats outrebounded the Warriors 60-36. That's right, the Bobcats got 60 rebounds.

-- Gerald Wallace scored 18 points on 12 attempts, pulled down 10 rebounds, and had 5 blocks, all in only 31 minutes.

-- Boris Diaw was on a mission, scoring 14 points on 6-10 shooting, fighting for 12 rebounds, and dishing 9 assists. It was the kind of game that makes coaches swoon.

-- Raymond Felton did not have a good offensive game. D.J. Augustin did, scoring 19 points on 10 attempts. But both of them did a solid job defending Stephen Curry, giving up 25 points, but on an unsightly 8-23 shooting game.

-- Gerald Henderson got actual burn again, possibly the most welcome development of the evening.

The Bobcats found their grove once they started working it inside to

Crash, Boris, and others. Settling for outside shots was not working since JAX was off.
Jax also had 5 turnovers. T-time had his first less than stellar game for the Bobcats. He had trouble finding his spot on both ends of the court.

DJ seems to be the difference maker now. When he is on, the Bobcats win. When he is off, the Bobcats lose.

It may be hard for David to add this to the good list, but Stephen Graham had a very good game with some nice drive & dunks, rebounds, good D, and a block.

Graham shouldn't get more run than Henderson

but he does make some solid contributions from time to time. Tonight was one of the nights where he earned his keep.

Hope Wallace is not suspended, especially Tuesday against Miami

We need another home win on Tuesday. 1/2 game behind Chicago. 1 game behind Miami.

Just realized why Boris was desparately trying to pass at the end of the game

instead of taking the lay-up. He was 1 assist away from a triple-double.

Does Wallace seem overly cocky since the AllStar break?

I can’t put my finger on it, but somethings different… like prancing around, complaining at refs, starting fights… instead of just working hard, busting his tail like he did the 1st half of the season. Am I alone on this one???

Tolliver's lucky

He didn’t receive some spikes bursting through his chest.
The Warriors can thank Wallace for not killing Tolliver…and that needs to be all that comes to Wallace tonight…
A big thank you from the Golden State

I have noticed that too. I trust that it will pass soon.

I've noticed.

I’m still trying to put my finger on it, but it definitely started on the very first night after the break. He seems… I don’t know…. moody? I can’t come up with a better description. He’s always complained to the refs, but there seems to be an angry edge to it that wasn’t there earlier in the season. It’s a subjective thing and that makes it all the harder, but he seems to have lost his intensity and replaced it with temper. It’s affecting his entire game – even tonight. NOTHING in the first half and then tearing it up in the second isn’t really his style. He has his bad nights, but it’s usally all or nothing. We don’t see both Jeckyll AND Hyde in the same game very often.

"lost his intensity and replaced it with temper"

Exactly what I’m thinking. But if this is true, it’s definitely hurting the team. Because we haven’t been the same since the break… and Wallace is the only one playing worse. Well maybe Felton is too. But DJ, Graham, Diaw, Thomas all look improved. We need Gerald back to continue this playoff push.

Great game tonight aside from Gerald's ejection
  • I’ve seen Ron Artest nearly punch Joey Graham this season and nothing was called and nobody was suspended from what I can remember, but plays like that cannot be allowed. For shame, Gerald, for shame.
  • To explain Maggette’s absence in the 4th quarter, my pal and I were heckling the crap out of him every time they went on offense in the 4th qtr. During that quarter he took only one shot and missed it. I take full credit for his ineffectiveness.
  • And I thought the cheering for the Lakers was bad last night. My friend and I must have been the only guys booing him the whole game. The Official Father of whataboutbob_cats went to the game as well; I should probably apologize for embarrassing him so much lol.
  • Quite a fun game to go to, I’d say. Close enough in the 1st half for competitiveness to keep the fans awake and then we pulled aways in the 4th to assure the win. Can’t ask for anything better if you want an entertaining game.
  • Tyrus Thomas’ whole family must have come to the game tonight. My friend, the Official Father, and I all rode the light rail to the arena and at one stop we noticed about 8-10 people in a group all wearing Tyrus jerseys.

Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is.

My only comment for the night...or morning...

2 decent games…no comments from Procton…and no open thread participation.
bad games = Procton visit
good games, pre All Star Break = no Procton…
preseason…bad early season = Procton visit
See a trend?

Is there a name for this kind of in-depth research work?

In the immortal words of Chang from the first Tremors movie, “You’re gonna be sorry you don’t give it a name.”
After all, without a scientifical fancyish technologallity name, you’ll never be able to get an acreddited PHD in this heretofore unknown discipline. (As usual, “PHD” stands for “Piled High & Deep”)

I suggest “Proctonology.”

Lets keep rolling!!

Dang, I wish we were playing the Pacers tonight and that was Hansbrough getting hit instead of Tolliver.

No more Stephen Graham jokes…The guy went on an 8 pt swing by himself including two baseline jams.

Nellie wins the battle of whos more insane between him and LB by benching Maggette and Turiaf. Maybe next time LB.

Diaw and Felton shouldnt even try to get triple doubles because its fate for Gerald Wallace to be the first Bobcat to have one.

Gerald Benching

The good thing about Wallace getting benched for much of the first half and only getting 31 mins is that he got some rest for once in a lifetime lol.

A tale of two Geralds

1) I agree with my good friend alwalte2 that it’s about time Wallace got some rest. Even a one game suspension may be a good thing.

2) This is a little out there, but does anyone wonder if Larry Brown was “saving” Henderson for the stretch run? Everyone on the planet finds Hendo’s lack of playing time inexplicable. But rookies are known to hit a wall when the first encounter the 82 game grind. Intentional or not, there will be no wall for Henderson. If we make the playoffs, he’ll be a contributor adding depth to the bench. Trading Flip away is probably the primary catalyst for the change is Hendo’s minutes, but I’m wondering if keeping Hendo fresh wasn’t in the back of LB’s mind. Just a thought.

Hendo's minutes had a lot to do with the All-Star game

Crash needed to play a lot to maintain his rebounds, points, and blocks stats before the All-Star break to give him a good shot at an All-Star. The selection was a boost to the city and put the Bobcats on the map. Now that we are past the All-Star game, Crash can rest a little more to get ready for the playoffs and Hendo and others benefit with more playing time.

Remember this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbcjL7AVxMA

Bynum wasn’t playing the ball at all. Got just a flagrant 1 which was upgraded to a 2 after the game which means nothing, really. For crying out loud, he broke some ribs and punctured Gerald’s lung and got barely a slap on the wrist. Listen to Gerald groan in pain and tell me Bynum shouldn’t have gotten a 1-2 game suspension.
