Charlotte Bobcats knock out Washington Wizards, 107-96; Wiz suffer 14th straight loss

It got a little hairy in the fourth quarter, but the Charlotte Bobcats dispatched the Washington Wizards with relative ease, 107-96.

It certainly wasn't because of the Cats' defense, as the Wiz shot 48% from the field and 60% from three. Rather, the Bobcats brought enough offense of their own, shooting 55% from the field, and took advantage of free throw and offensive rebound advantages to stay ahead.

Game thread comments, lowlights, and highlights after the jump.

GAME THREAD COMMENTS

PoAshton -- Listening to Bobcats Live before the game, I realized for the first time that the Bobcats have a magic number, 8. That makes me happy. (DA -- 7!)

PanthersFTW -- [Felton's] performance feels pretty much like a constant now. I barely notice him when glancing at the box score.

BAD

-- Tyrus Thomas. You're exactly the kind of power forward I love. However, you don't seem to want to be that kind of guy. Don't worry. I'll still love you if you take a lot fewer jumpers. Dunk more. Jam it. Make them block you at the rim. Because they can't. Otherwise, 2-9 from the field is going to happen a lot more often than you want.

GOOD

-- The one aspect of this season I've enjoyed most has been Gerald Wallace's step forward. He's combined all of the best attributes he displayed in previous seasons with a sense of perspective and control that's launched him squarely among the top thirty players in the game. This night, he scored 23 points on 8-12 shooting, with, for him, only 6 rebounds.

-- The next most enjoyable aspect of this season, for me, has been Raymond Felton's transformation from a borderline non-starter into the trustworthy floor general so many had wished him to be for so many years. Maybe it took adding a respected figure like Stephen Jackson for him to change his ways, but that mechanic is kind of beside the point for now. We can discuss it further come the offseason. Tonight, Felton scored 19 points on 8-10 shooting and passed out 11 assists.

You guys are gonna hate Larry Hughes and Stevie Graham..

till’ the cows come home. The truth is, every time Hughes misses a shot, you’re all going to say how bad he is, and every time he hits one you’re going to say how lucky he was. Graham has proven himself enough so there’s no point in defending him. But Hughes has played three games and played a pretty decent one tonight. Sure there were some bad shots, but what player on our team DOESNT take bad shots from time to time (except Felton as of late, I haven’t seen him force a shot in AWHILE)? I’m all for giving the rookies some burn, but at least try to approach Larry Hughes with an open mind. I mean the dude had 10 points (yes on 4-10 shooting), 3 rebounds, and an assist with only one turnover. That’s not flashy, but its what we should expect from a role player. I’m not bashing any of you guys because I love everyone that posts on here, but I feel like you guys are a little unfair towards both Graham and ESPECIALLY Larry Hughes. Once again, Graham should be out of the question here because he has already proven to be a solid guy if we are in a pinch.

the official fiance of Hawkeyesbaby

and I spotted you guys and your signs from up top.

I don’t agree with hatin on Larry Hughes for his shot selection tonight. Had he not missed two wide open 3’s he would have shot over 50% and that’s pretty good by my standards. He played well and moved the ball. Gerald played great. Jack is starting to really frustrate me with his ball handling and his shot selection seems to get worse. Yeesh. Boris barely had the ball enough to make an impact. The majority of Tyrus’ misses came in garbage time when he just really wanted to dunk, but no love.

I was 7th row behind cats bench. Some of the best seats Ive had at the arena. only 50 bucks. Came w/ a dinner and everything. Theyre normally 150. If anyone hasnt gone to a game, now is a good time to find deals for the rest of the regular season games.

Lol. Don't worry about it Maverick.

I’ve been commenting for weeks about the undeserved hate Hughes and Graham get. I see it too. ROF is the biggest gathering of Gerald Henderson fans in the world.

I agree with you on Graham... verdicts still out on Larry though

Of course it took Graham awhile to be productive. But LB saw something in him, and stuck with him. And it seems to have worked out. Honestly, with the playoffs approaching, I DON’T want Henderson playing instead of Graham. Hendo will get his shot next year, when we’re not in crunch time.

redesign of nonchalant shirt

back

David- This version is different from the version I recently emailed you. After I sent it, I realized you couldn’t see the basketball on the back of the shirt, which I thought was pretty necessary. So I made the Diaw-esque character larger so the basketball can be seen

About resigning Felton...

could we use his Bird Year Exception to go over the salary cap to sign him?…Bird year details are a little muddled to me but I’m absolutely sure he qualifies. If so would that be a solution?

A few observations from beside the Bobcats tunnel.

First of all, Larry Brown arrived loaded for bear. I have no idea why, but he was growling and barking the moment we arrived tonight. It didn’t take him long to find a target for his ire. He literally spent the entire second half chewing on DJ Augustin every second number 14 was on the court. He would walk up the court beside DJ barking and waving every step of the way. In the later stages of things we observed DJ visibly trying to avoid his coach by bringing the ball up on the other side of the court. It didn’t matter. Coach is experienced at being heard in a room full of fans. During one timeout, LB marched out on court right past the other 4 players and met DJ at the center circle. I swear I thought he was gonna grab Deej by the ear and drag him the rest of the way. It was hard for us not to laugh by that point.

Second of all, don’t be mislead by Hughes’ poor shooting percentage. Almost every shot he took was as the third option and he actually not only showed restraint, but played the best he’s played since coming to the Cats. He was also almost constantly in position and seldom looked lost on court. It seemed like every time the Bobcats began to falter, it was Hughes that held them together. I haven’t liked a thing he’s done since joining the team, but tonight he impressed the hell out of me.

Raymond Felton played the most solid game I’ve ever seen from him. He was an assist machine and defensively there were times it seemed like there was more than one of him out there.

Tyson Chandler was pointless until the game was almost over. It didn’t matter. He was a lot of fun to watch. A couple of times another Bobcat got called for a foul and Tyson clearly looked at the ref and said, “Wait, that wasn’t me?” complete with a big smile. He was obviously having fun out there. When he finally did score it was on a thundering alley-oop and he ran back upcourt waving his arms exhorting the crowd to cheer. A lot of us laughed that a man with one 4th quarter bucket would act like he had just set the league scoring record. A lot of us laughed. But everyone rose up and cheered. By the way, “everyone” was a hell of a lot of people tonight.

No, Andrewlail never made it to the Jumbotron. But several staff members checked out the signs he and his son were holding and told still more people about them. They got a lot of attention and as we were leaving one staffer apologized to him and promised him that if he were to bring the signs back another night, they’d get them on the big screen and try to get them on the tv broadcast as well.

For large chunks of the game the Bobcats looked like contenders. Even more importantly in my opinion, they were having fun together. The bench was all smiles and players were loudly congratulated for solid play both on defense, and on offense. The only glum faces belonged LB who was seemingly on his very last nerve most of the game, and Augustin, who seemed to shrink a bit every time Brown sent a withering gaze and comment his way. I can’t define it really, but there was also a new attitude amongst the staff as well. The joint was rocking and there were already signs of better finance everywhere. Let’s just say the atmosphere was brighter and the staff didn’t act like they had to sneak back in after everyone was gone and rummage in the seats for enough change to pay the locker room light bill.

It’s been fun to go to the Cable Box all season. Now, it’s the best time in town. My favorite moment of the night was when I wheeled my chair out to a swag table. I asked for a certain shirt and was told they didn’t have it in the size I needed. The woman at the counter said, “You can walk downstairs to the main store and they’ll probably have it there.” I sat there for a second looking up at her and watched her brain realize what her mouth had just said. She really did turn a remarkable shade of red. We both had a good laugh over it, but I’d wager a fair bit of coin she’ll be shaking her head and telling her coworkers about her blunder for several days to come.

Time is running out to get to a game before the regular season ends. If you miss it you’ll miss out. The time to sit on the fence has passed and the time for the people of Charlotte to be fans of pro ball again has officially arrived. Welcome to the bandwagon, newcomers. We’ve been saving a seat for you.

Bandwagoner here...

I’ve considered myself a Bobcat fan since day 1. I can also count on one hand the number of games I’ve seen on tv. In fact, this is probably the first time I’ve been excited about what the Bobcats are doing on the court and it has to occur when I’m studying overseas? Bah. I can’t watch any Charlotte games in Holland! (So, side note: if any of you know a website since justin rarely has games any more, I’d love to hear it).

It’s kind of fun cheering for a NBA team again, even if I am doing it from a long distance away and can’t really support the team. But, my point is that for the first time, I want to support the team. And getting people like me will be very important for the future of the Bobcats.

Oh, and Jordan, get Felton back. I absolutely loved watching him at UNC and I would love to see him in some Bobcat games.

LB seemed grouchy in the post game conference as well

I mean your starters went out with a 18 point lead. You put in 5 guys that I’ve never seen play together, no true center… playing against Washington’s starters (I think), and LB is shocked that they didn’t play well?!@#? Even mentioned that they’d be better off in the d-league.

He’s really turning up the heat with the playoffs approaching. He always gets on his point guards, but with Ray Ray playing so well, I guess DJ had to bare the brunt of it.

The also exploded when Ratliff had that break away steal and dunk

Robert Parrish had a break away steal and dunk once when he played for the Hornets. I remember watching that as a kid. It was pretty hilarious.

I have my fingers crossed very tightly that RayRay can keep this up

I think his size and determination are exactly what you want in a PG. And he’s proven he has the moves. But long-term consistency is the big question mark… If he had that, I think he’d have All-Star potential.

by ElBacano on Mar 27, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

If you check the ROF archive

consistency was the exact topic du jour regarding Felton back in November when he first started showing signs of improvement. There was a lot of skepticism – much of it from me. But the weeks wore on and Felton maintained the gains and even improved a bit further. He’s made a believer out of me and many others. There was a time when the consensus was that Felton wouldn’t be worth the cash he plans to demand to resign with Charlotte. Now Jordan has already alluded that he’s looking for ways to scrape sufficient cap money to keep Ray in town without bumping into the luxury tax. Hopefully Raymond Felton and his emergence as a solid point guard are both here to stay. I think All-Star talk might be a bit too kind, but who knows what will happen?

by Ourdaywillcome on Mar 27, 2010 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm being a little too generous

I’m assuming if he played every night like this game… 11 assists, 19 pts. But his assists are up this month… he’s hit 11 3 times in March. He’d probably need to avg 2 more assists per game to even be in the All-Star discussion.

Good atmosphere in the arena last night

I’m a little horse today though. I looked for some of y’all… but didn’t see anyone I was in section 210.

Efficiency was the measure of the night in Charlotte.
