Make a team on a budget - $24 million

It's an off day after an uninspiring win over a cellar dweller. The Bobcats will host the Washington Wizards tomorrow -- they may still be without Andray Blatche -- and until then, there may not be much to talk about. Sure, the playoffs are within sight, but with Chicago's daunting schedule and Toronto's incredible fade down the stretch, I'm as confident as ever that a playoff berth is in the bag.

So, here's a fun little exercise for you to attempt on your lunch break that will give everyone an idea of what you value in basketball players. NBA rules would never allow you to do this, because of the salary floor, but try to build a 12-man team with only 24 million dollars (09-10 contracts). Use Storyteller's Contracts site. My team is after the jump.

Star-divide

PG -- Darren Collison (1.3), Mario Chalmers (0.8)

SG -- Marcus Thornton (0.5), Chris Douglas-Roberts (0.7), Dontell Jefferson (0.5)

SF -- LeBron James (15.8), Nicolas Batum (1.1), Luc-Richard MBah Amoute (0.7)

PF -- DeJuan Blair (0.9), , Pops Mensah-Bonsu (0.5), Rodney Carney (0.8)

C -- Jon Brockman (0.5)

PLAYOFFS BABY!

Thought about going the Mbah a Moute route,

But decided to upgrade to Jared Dudley.

PG Rajon Rondo (2.1), Stephen Curry (2.7)
SG Brandon Roy (3.9), Courtney Lee (1.3)
SF Rudy Gay (3.3), Jared Dudley (1.3), Derrick Brown (457k)
PF Jason Thompson (2.3), Dejuan Blair (850K), Deandre Jordan (736k)
C Andray Blatche (3.0), Roy Hibbert (1.5)

Comes out to 23.443 Mil. I love this team. Young and straight up nasty.

Going young-ish

G – Rajon Rondo (2.1)
G – Wes Matthews (.5)
G – Tyreke Evans (3.6)
G – Keith Bogans (1.1)
F – Kevin Durant (4.8)
F – Wayne Ellington (1)
F – Anthony Morrow (.75)
F – DeJuan Blair (.85)
C – David Lee (7)
C – Brook Lopez (2.26)

Total – 23.96

This would require some egos to be in check perhaps, as having Lee, Durant and Evans on the floor at the same time probably wouldn’t work. Rondo and Bogans would be the backcourt while Durant and Lee were on the floor for scoring. Evans and Lopez would do the work in the meanwhile, while Ellington and Morrow would spread the floor with their three point threat. Wes Matthews is a budding quality gaurd who could be the fifth guy on the floor.

Tyreke Evans wins sixth man of the year by default and this team will be competitive for many years to come. (Of course, you’d have to pay them for many years to come as well.)

crap...

only ten players… i can’t count!

by adamcawa on Mar 25, 2010 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I like

That is a nice team. I think Durant is a must have in this exercise at 4.8.

by CarolinaDodger on Mar 25, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly..

durant and rondo are necessities… two top 5 players at their positions with still 17.1 million to spend!

by adamcawa on Mar 25, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

OK… take out David Lee’s 7 million…

add Kyrylo Fesenko – .87, Channing Frye – 2, Serge Ibaka – 1.13, Glen Davis – 3

23.96 total, so the complete roster would be 13 man

PG – Rajon Rondo, Wesley Matthews
SG – Keith Bogans, Tyreke Evans
SF – Kevin Durant, Wayne Ellington, Anthony Morrow, Serge Ibaka
PF – DeJuan Blair, Glen Davis
C – Brook Lopez, Channing Frye, Kyrylo Fesenko

That team would be mighty good, I believe.

PG: A. Brooks (1.1) T. Lawson (1.4)
SG: R Bell (5.3) T. Douglas (1)
SF: K. Durant (4.8) Reggie Williams (.7?) D. Brown (.46)
PF: K. Love (3.4) D. Blair (.85) S. Ibaka (1.2)
C: M Gasol (3.3) J Brockman (.5)

Total: 24.1 but I rounded up for a bunch of salaries

Aaron Brooks can dish and shoot the three with a speedy ty lawson to back him up and tear through defenses. I have enough scoring in Durant, Brooks, Love that I needed a good sg defender—> Raja Bell. Toney Douglas off the bench for scoring. Reggie Williams and Derrick Brown for cheap bench small forwards. I think the rest is pretty self-explanatory

Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is.

gasol

I really thought about adding gasol myself… he’s a good value

PG: Brandon Jennings (2.1), Aaron Brooks (1.2)
SG: Tyreke Evans (3.6), Rudy Fernandez (1.1) Toney Douglas (1)
SF: Kevin Durant (4.8), Wilson Chandler (1,25) Anthony Morrow (.737)
PF: Joakim Noah (2.5), DeJuan Blair (.85)
C: Andray Blatche (3), Roy Hibbert (1.6)

OFFENSE!

This team would average 145 PPG!

Jennings, Evans, Durant and Brooks alone would combine for 113 per 48!

by adamcawa on Mar 25, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Champions!

PG – Stephen Curry (2.7) Aaron Brooks (1.1) Sean Livingston (1.0)
SG – Eric Gordon (2.8) Anthony Morrow (0.7)
SF – Kevin Durant (4.8) Nicolas Batum (1.1)
PF – Blake Griffin (5.0) DeJuan Blair (0.9) Brian Skinner’s Goatee (0.8)
C – Brook Lopez (2.3) DeAndre Jordan (0.7)

Starting 5 in bold

Aaron Brooks pg 1.119 mil
Will Bynum pg .826 mil
Stephen Curry pg/sg 2.711 mil
Courtney Lee sg 1.265 mil
Kevin Durant sg/sf 4.791 mil
Stephen Graham sg/sf .885 mil
Al Thornton sf/pf 1.901 mil
LaMarcus Aldridge pf/c 5.845 mil
Brook Lopez pf/c 2.256 mil
Juwan Howard pf/c .826 mil
Sheldon Williams pf/c .856 mil
Jeff Pendergraph pf/c .458 mil

team total: 23.739 mil (& i rounded up on all the figures just to be certain)

I made my roster without looking at anyone else’s first, so as not to be influenced. Then i looked at everybody else’s and mine again. I noticed that i had multiple similarities to others’ and that i needed another PG — so i dropped Anthony Morrow and picked up Will Bynum. Cutting Stephen Graham was never an option. Period

All the similarities are interesting. Aren’t they? Everybody wants Durant.

That's a decent line up, but you give up a lot of size in your starting backcourt.

Thanks for signing my boi Shelden Williams, you just wanted Candace Parker at the home games, don’t lie!

Well i hired Larry Brown as my coach...

so Stephen Graham is gonna get all of Curry’s minutes anyway. Problem solved.

+1 gazillion.

best starting five - four all stars

rondo
roy
durant
horford
lopez

brooks
randolph
blair
ibaka
morrow
jerebko
thornton

or go with budinger/wallace instead of ibaka/jerebko. that’d be the best one year challenger, i guess.

i like my first team with love (and evans) because it doesn’t have rondo/roy who are already signed to max deals for next year. seems like cheating, and evans and love are killer. future all stars, and i still think that group might be better (now) than the roy/rondo version! (rondo and brooks would be insanely quick though, for however long they could be played together.)
