A little love for the haters
Hello there. Remember me? Y'all met me way back when at the very start of the season. I started making some predictions about the chances for the Charlotte Bobcats this season. I was innocent, nay even naive some would say. Ignorant, stupid, a dreamer, and an idiot were far more common terms used to welcome me to ROF. I was frequently laughed at and berated with untrue statistics and bad math as I was shouted down. It was tough to be a newbie back in those days. I had to drive uphill in the snow 15 miles both ways in my wife's Jeep Cherokee to even get to the blogsite. The heater took a solid 5 miles to warm the interior of the car to a climate-controlled 70 degrees and I was only getting 19 miles to the gallon. I had to listen to hand-made mix tapes in the car because there was no built-in CD player. But I was lucky! There were others that only had the unibody model without the body on frame chasis that came standard with our Grand Cherokee model. Sure I was forced to wear Air Balance sneaks, but there were less fortunate souls still sporting old Rebok Pumps! I (sniff, sniff) still played NBA 2008 and unlike you kids today, I still had to actually PLUG my joypad into my game system.
But what a difference a season makes.
You remember, don't you? You were the ones making statements like:
"there's no WAY the Bobcats will make the playoffs until at least 2012-2013."
"those idots in the front office have destroyed the future of the team for another 3 seasons at least."
"You're crazy. In order to make it to .500 the Bobcats will have to play 10 games over .500 for the rest of the season and that's just impossible."
"there is no way this team is making the playoffs. They'll be lucky to get 30 wins and there is no way in hell they will win 35, let alone the 40 they'll need for the 8 seed."
"it will be a miracle if they even win 25."
"The team sucks and the rest of the East would have to collapse in order for the Bobcats to avoid the lottery."
"There's no way the team will fill more than the 6-8 thousand seats in that building."
"As long as the team has Jordan running the show, they will suck."
"Nobody will support this team because without Okafor they don't have a prayer."
"even if they DO get to the playoffs, they lose their draft pick only to get their butts kicked in the first round and the team will be even worse because of it."
"the Bobcats should just all go eat worms and DIE!" (okay, I made that one up.)
Well, the season isn't quite over yet and although most of the above statements (or something almost exactly like them) came from one individual, there were many others making similar comments. There were Felton haters, Chandler haters, Jordan haters, and many a person still worshipping at the Tomb of the Unknown Hornet. There were threads giving game-by-game breakdowns of Okafor and Chandler that were regularly updated to show just how hapless the Bobcats decision-makers were.
Oh, I met some optimists. We would gather together at unknown locations to lick our wounds and promise that some day we'd show them all. We'd come back battered, bruised, and broken and some day we'd by-God make the playoffs and show them all! On that great and glorious day we'd make them all pay!
Hey guys? Some day is now.
The Charlotte Bobcats are 3 games over .500 for the first time ever and riding a 6 game win streak.
Not only is the team sitting in the 6 slot as I type this, but the members of ROF are now debating WHICH of the top contenders the Cats have the best chance of knocking off on our way to the 2nd round of the playoffs.
The debate is no longer about who we'll have to get to replace Felton or if we can get someone decent for Augustin. It's about how deep we'll have to dig in the wallet to have the honor of KEEPING RayRay in Charlotte.
The Charlotte Bobcats only need 1 win to make the 35 win plateau. Oh yeah - there are 17 games left for them to "luck up" and win that 1 game y'all said we'd never see this year.
They also need only win 7 out of those 17 games to have the .500 season that was declared a pipe dream and an impossibility.
We've also helped our situation by winning the tie-breakers against some of the teams vying for the same playoff positions we are.
The haters are now reduced to saying that we had to mortgage our future draft picks to achieve these heights and we better enjoy our short ride because we'll be in the cellar for the forseeable future after this. What's that you say? Some day you'll be back and the Bobcats will suck again and THEN we'll all be sorry and you'll make us all pay? Could be, could be.
But right now the Bobcats definitely do NOT suck and you guys are rarely, if ever, posting here. Oh, we know you're out there lurking and hoping against all hope that the team folds up and collapses so you can commence to gloating and crowing about the shortcomings again. It's okay. Come back and enjoy what's happening here in Charlotte. There's an entire post-season to talk trash about so don't give up now. You can still smear ashes in Cinderella's face. It's just likely you'll have to wait until she comes back from the dance to do it.
For the real fans of the Charlotte Bobcats, THESE are the good old days!

I love it
I don’t comment here much, but I’ve really starting following the Bobcats better since midway through last season. I love the team we’ve got right now with toughness, rebounding, and defense as our mantra. Its nice to see that we can hold our own against the league’s best, and its high time people around the league take notice that the Bobcats are for real. I’m proud to say I’m a Bobcats fan now.
But to be fair, I still hate the Okafor-Chandler deal. :)
To clarify....
…I hate that trade from a strictly on-the-court viewpoint. I understand the economics behind the deal.
Don’t post much either, but love it. I’ve been to almost 20 home games this season, and have been a Bobcats fan for the full length of the last two seasons. It was a marriage made in fan heaven since I was new to Charlotte and new to the NBA, so following a team when they were at their worst with seemingly no fans was perfect.
This season has been unbelievable. Can’t wait for the playoffs.
Lol @ anybody who really though
Okafor was the key to success in Charlotte. He’s a solid player, but nothing more. He was traded not because of how “bad” he is, but because of how soft he is. I seen it day in and day out. Sure, he always ended up with a double double, but it was the softest double double ever. I was very happy that we got Okafor out of Charlotte because it signaled a sign of change. Just like it was a sign of change to finally give up on Morrison (and Shannon Brown). Just like it was a sign of change trading Jason Richardson. One thing about Charlotte fans, we are loyal to our players. And sometimes we get so content with mediocrity, that we’re afraid to take that gamble for success. That’s just Charlotte. I mean, hell, there were still people crying for Jake Delhomme to be a Panther this year. I’m glad we have Larry Brown as our head coach because he knows when it’s time for change. So what so and so was the number 3 pick, or the first pick in franchise history. We’re trying to win games. Get the job done. Larry Brown -Eastern Conference Coach of the Year.

all good points
but its not often you find a legit center in the NBA who rebounds, blocks, and doesn’t require a lot of offensive touches. Maybe Okafor is soft (and awful at the FT line), but he did keep opposing teams from the lane and the rim. Tyson Chandler is good in theory, but he gets hurt more than feelings. Economics aside, I would feel a lot more confident in a deeper playoff run with Okafor in the middle instead of Chandler. But, no sense in living in the past. Season has been solid thus far.

Okafor vs Chandler 1 on 1 straight up? Okafor everytime. No Doubt.
But (ch)Okafor vs. Chandler plus Ratliff plus (hopefully when he comes back healthy!) my main man NAZR MoHAHmmmmmed 3 on 1 tag team? Plus Diop (is he still here?) I think the production at center for the Bobcats this season has seen little, if any, drop off.
I’m excited going forward through the finish of this season and into this season’s playoffs with this current line up! With the mix of young and experienced post players the Cats now have, in addition to their All Star small forward Gerald Wallace and solid back court of Jackson & Felton, the Cats don’t miss Okafor at all.
Hey Our Day! How about a shout out to all of us who were optimistic and positive heading into this season?
I’ve been out of town on business since the All-Star break (and following the Bobcats sans internet access in south Florida is not easy), but man it’s good to comeback to following a streaking team!
I like the Thomas acquisition. I like the Ratliff pick up. I think Hughes should help too going down the stretch. MJ bought the Bobcats, and that alone should be enough to get LB back on the sidelines for at least 1 more season — and maybe with the franchise long term in a GM or other FO position.
The future is bright for the Bobcats. If the players can maintain focus, 5th place in the Eastern conference and (a) playoff series win(s) are very attainable for this season. Additionally, considering the players already inked for next season and the great progress the team has made as a unit, i expect the success accrued by the ’Cats this season to become perennial for the immediate future.
Welcome home brother!
It’s nice to have you back in town. You were definitely among those I thought of when I mentioned the earlier part of the season when there were only a few of us lonely fanatical nuts and Bobcats Believers that dare speak out loud about the future of Charlotte basketball with anything other than disdain. You REALLY need to rejoin the game threads! They’ve become an absolute blast!

Have any of you all actually done this?
I hate to give my credit card info on-line period.
Am I just really paranoid?
Yes you are. I've done it.
Its legit.
The Bobcats do this alot. I got free tix to the Grizz home game earlier this year for buying tickets to the Bucks game.
OK I'll bite
Let’s check out how well the Okafor / Chandler trade has worked out this season.
Player -— Okafor -- Chandler
Games -— 67 -———- 34
MPG -—— 29.6 -——- 23.1
PPG -—— 10.7 -——— 6.4
RB -——— 9.2 -——— 6.3
BLK -——- 1.6 -———- 1.0
I originally hated this trade because I believed Okafor was a much better player than Chandler, and because Chandler was injury prone and showing signs of decline. Those stats only back up that analysis. It’s great the Bobcats may make the playoffs, but they clearly could have been a better team had they not traded Okafor for Chandler.
As for the argument that Okafor had to be moved to open up future cap space, there won’t be any significant cap space until 2012 at least. This off-season, the team is already over the cap at $59.5 M without resigning anyone. Even if the Bobcats let the contracts of Chandler and Nazr expire in 2011, they aren’t likely to have much cap room even then. (Assuming they keep DJ, Hendo and their 2011 first round pick and re-sign either Felton or Thomas, the team salary would likely exceed $50 M), and they’ll have only Diop left playing center.
Now my prediction that the Okafor trade signaled the beginning of a Bobcats fire sale was way off, but I also wrote the fire sale wouldn’t begin until after the team fell out of playoff contention. The acquisition of Stephen Jackson was a move nobody foresaw last summer, and that deal has been the difference that’s saved this season.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the Bobcats play since they traded for Jax. I picked them to win 28 games at the start of the season and would have guessed about 35 wins after the Jax deal. So if they beat that prediction by 5 games or so – great, and I’m glad Bob Johnson was able to sell the team without tearing it apart first.
But the success is probably not sustainable. Signing both Felton and Ty Thomas would almost certainly push the team into the luxury tax, and that makes no financial sense for a team already losing tens of millions of dollars per year. And two future 1st round picks are already traded away. The most realistic way this team improves is for the younger players, DJ, Hendo and Brown, to improve, and that is why many of us have been disappointed they haven’t played more this season.
With that said, here are a few actual quotes from lead Tyson Chandler basher, Ourdaywillcome:
Chandler is the worst thing to happen to the Charlotte Bobcats since inception.
Get rid of Tyson Chandler and Charlotte will have a basketball team again.
I had VERY high hopes when he came to Charlotte, but thus far the folks selling the nachos and beer in the stands are deserving more of a salary than Chandler is.
I’ve outlined every single problem our starting 5 is having on the court and every single one of them has a direct causal effect named Tyson Chandler.
And
This team isn’t going anywhere until we get rid of Tyson Chandler and replace him…
Way to keep the faith! I’m glad you feel vindicated that the Bobcats have proven all the “haters” wrong.

I'll be the first to admit I am the chief Chandler Hater.
I still feel he’s the millstone around the neck of the team.
I still stand by each and every one of the comments you quoted.
But you only quote from my evaluations of Tyson Chandler, basketball player.
I really wish you had seen fit to also include some of my many quotes about the actual Chandler/Okafor trade.
They are much more common and easier to find.
In those quotes I praised the front office for making the deal bringing Chandler to Charlotte because we would be in much worse shape financially had we held on to Okafor. Had we kept Okafor it would have been beyond 2014 season before we’d begin to see anything approaching cap relief and the trade saved us tens of millions of dollars.
It sucks that we’re stuck with Mr Iron Hands and Balsa Ankles Chandler for another year and any benefit we’re seeing right now (and his play HAS improved since coming back from his latest vacation in the stands) is only temporary.
But from a business perspective it was one of the wisest moves the Johnson Administration ever made and went a long way to make up for the ludicrous mistake made in overpaying Okafor in the first place.
What you see above is called “objectivity” and unlike many of the haters here at ROF, you have always been willing to show some and admit when your comments were off the mark. You even did so in your post. It’s also what I showed when, in my last fan post, I listed the intelligence of the negative posters as one of the best things about this blogsite.
The rest of the team – and Nazr in particular – have MORE than made up for the absence of Mr. Okafor, in my opinion.
You also comment that the team won’t see any cap relief until 2012. That’s only one more season away. Had we not made the Chandler deal the situation would have been much, much worse and the team wouldn’t have performed as well during that period. It is absolutely true that the team has lost huge money each season. BUT! Attendance and gear sales are up. Season ticket and corporate ticket sales are both up this season while the rest of the league saw an average 5% decline in both categories, and a playoff run will further increase excitement and interest in this team. In short, there is every reason to believe that the hemorrhaging of cash is about to diminish in a big way.
Finally, the new owners of the team (MJ may be the majority owner, but there are others that will wind up with almost as large a slice of the pie as Jordan had at the beginning of this season) are basketball people. Bob Johnson was a businessman and not the mosted gifted one in the world to boot. If you run a pro sports team the way Johnson (and for that matter George Schinn) did, you alienate the fans and castrate the corporate sponsorship. There is every reason to believe that the new owners will approach to overall skillset of running a pro club with much better balance and even in the worst-case scenario, Jordan will draw significantly better and diverse corporate interest than a freakin’ sponge company.
On this March afternoon, the Bobcats have yet to actually “prove” anything apart from being a better group of ballers than most expected. But the optimists here at ROF trusted that the team was headed in the correct direction and it appears we were correct. It’s very realistic to believe that the Bobcats will finish the season strong and indeed prove “all the haters wrong.”
There is more than ample reason for everyone – and I mean EVERYONE to celebrate and continue to enjoy the ride. I hope you continue being among the more objective “negative” trending posters. I also hope you continue to do things like you did above and make us all back up the things we say. But most of all, I hope you won’t be one of those people that up and disappear when the club does well and then resurface whenever the Cats hit a speedbump. Fandom is fun and involves the good, the bad, end even the ugly. It’s also fun to just laugh at it all once in a while. That’s what the gameday threads are for and there’s room for lovers, haters, and everything in between.

chandler's ripple effect
What Chandler did was force LB to use Nazr Mohammed, who found his inner Mike Gminski after 23 years in the league. And trade for Theo Ratliff, who’s been a lot better than anticipated. So Chandler did some good, after all. Seriously, what the Chandler trade did was break up the losing core. It made abundantly clear that they were willing to split with their past. Getting rid of Morrison and Carroll, etc. was not enough; those were obvious moves. Dealing away a player who was actually pretty good (but not good enough) and well-liked was a much bigger statement.
(And it opens the door for Alexis Ajinca to come in next year and contend for 3rd-season French player of the year. Hey, I don’t care what anybody else thinks about him— I still believe it was a smart trade and expect he could turn out to be a real NBA player, and a true offensive center at that, a rare and precious commodity.)
