Bobcats Lose to Mavs 89-84

The Charlotte Bobcats still have not defeated the Mavericks in their history, losing to Dallas 89-84. Dirk Nowitzki never found his comfort zone, scoring 27 points and needing 23 shots to do it, but he was still nearly unstoppable in crunch time. Caron Butler and Jason Terry were the Mavs' other major contributors, pouring in points while Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion stumbled.

The loss pushes the Cats further under .500, to 28-30. As the season winds down, each win becomes more and more important, and the next two games will both be battles, in Boston against the Celtics on Wednesday, and then back in Charlotte against the Lakers on Friday. If the Bobcats hope to make some noise in the playoffs, they'll have to get there first, and they won't get there unless they beat some quality teams down the stretch.

GAME THREAD COMMENT

WhatAboutBob_cats -- Argh I hate Dirk. 7 feet and has a sweet shot? fine. Takes fade-aways that are nearly impossible to block? ugh lame and annoying.

BAD

-- Theo Ratliff has been a very good defensive center for the Cats, but much of the Cats' resurgence after the Stephen Jackson trade has also been due to Nazr Mohammed's surprisingly effective play. Without any post presence whatsoever, the Cats simply can't hang with the best teams in the league. The defense may still be there, but the wings aren't good enough to be the offense alone. If our center puts 4 points and 2 rebounds in 27 minutes, that's an impediment to winning unless that center's defense is All World, and Ratliff is not All World.

-- The Bobcats turned it over 19 times. 6 of those were Stephen Jackson's.

-- Cut Stephen Graham. Free Gerald Henderson. Don't make me start another blogspot web site, this one devoted to obtaining Henderson's basketball freedom.

GOOD

-- Stephen Jackson scored 20 points on 14 shots, but he also grabbed 7 rebounds. For a guy who's playing guard most of the time, floating around the perimeter and then slashing, he's picked up the boards recently.

-- Tyrus Thomas came off the bench to score 16 points (taking waaaaay too many shots, 16) and grab a team high 12 rebounds in only 29 minutes. Off the top of my head, I'd guess our new best crunch time lineup involves Thomas at the four and Diaw at the five.

If Gerald Henderson doesn't get minutes at least give Graham's to Brown

He can actually contribute if given the chance (not that henderson can’t we just haven’t seen much yet) he should be playing 17+ minutes instead of the 6 he played tonight. It will help if Gerald would get some rest because I think he is getting tired and I don’t know whats going on with Naz but it would be nice to have him back.

--Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER
--Someone should slap Larry Brown and bring him back to reality..

Ugh...

With 40 wins still looking like the cutoff for playoff contention (and that wouldn’t even be a sure thing) and likely losses to Boston and LA upcoming, it’s looking like we’ll need a 12-10 finish just to qualify as the #8 seed. That could be a tough road to hoe for a team that looks like it’s barely keeping its head above water of late.

We need Michael Jordan. To Play.

Especially since he shot so well during a HORSE game against our 15th man.

31 points in the 2nd Half

Its amazing that a team scoring that few is even in the game. Its a statement about how solid the defense is…and how poor the offense can be (39.7% from the field)!

I was at the game tonight,

Dirk was wearing Boris out. Boris had nothing, however Tyrus gave Dirk trouble all night. Dirk struggled shooting over someone as long as Tyrus. Interesting thing. Larry finally saw it during the 4th but by then it was too late.

Please

Bring Michael finley to the bobcats! Experienced player to not hurt us and take good, veteran shooter type shots. Tutor Gerald Henderson into a decent jumpshooter! First act as prez MJ.

This sounds terrible.

There wont be anyone on the team who can run up and down the court if we get too many “veterans”

Finley is awful.

He certainly isn’t going to help at the point, and he can’t even shoot any more (38%.)

Well you won't get any disagreement when you state the obvious

Doesn’t change the fact that D.J. ain’t shooting for shit this season.

Lame ass excuse: D.J.‘s dick fell off and he hasn’t been the same ever since.

Let’s see you top that one.

lol ouch

Hendo’s eyes widen as he reads that. “Could it happen to me?” he wonders

What do you guy think...

With the game of H-O-R-S-E…and interaction with MJ…will Hendo possibly come out of the shadows…and shed the warmups?

That's a pretty great story.

Maybe one of us can be the new owner of the Bobcats if we ever run into MJ in an airport lounge.

(As you might not be able to see, this post is a work of fiction. But what does it say about Michael that it seems so believable? — Ed.)

I have the answer....

How about the Answer???? Philly is cutting their strings. Is it worth a shot? We know AI loves him some LB. 2nd unit with AI, DJ, an Tyrus? I kinda like that action.

by mives36 on Mar 2, 2010 1:24 PM EST reply actions

AI? you talkin' about AI?

just playing. but seeing him making every excuse to miss games is enough for me to say no on that. he should just stay home and take care of his family.

by Shockers on Mar 2, 2010 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I'd say only if he's committed

And if he’s willing to accept a bench role. We do need some bench scoring . But even then I’m not so sure AI is what we need

AI is a no go.

At the beginning of the season there was reason to believe he may still be able to help a team. He’s had his chances though. His family may be ailing, which is very unfortunate, but he’s no use to an NBA roster now.

Iverson can't sign for anybody and play in the playoffs.

He was on a roster on 3/1.

He is exactly where he should be

Taking care of family.
Unfortunately…the chance of any NBA team taking him at this point…

Let’s just say AI is now “retired” from the NBA
Whether he’s ready or not…he’s done

Just an aside as I watch some games tonight

I thought we had the most annoyingly obnoxious announcer, but I see that title belongs to the Heat’s announcer. That guy makes my ears bleed. No wonder their attendance is slack for a team with a superstar.
