Bobcats to be Sold Soon; Jazz Game Recap

Rick Bonnell is reporting the Bobcats could be sold as soon as today, which kind of makes every other bit of team news insignificant in comparison. Reading the tea leaves, it looks like George Postolos has the upper hand. If he does successfully buy the team, then that all but assures Michael Jordan and his poor management track record are out the door. Larry Brown has explicitly threatened to leave should MJ leave, so that would mean he's gone after the season, too. General manager Rod Higgins might be a casualty of the front office shakeup, but that's not so clear.

Either way, we know the current management wants to make the playoffs this year and next, long term development be damned. They've traded away multiple first round draft picks and have Alexis Ajinca and Tyrus Thomas to show for them. Here's hoping new ownership takes a more rational approach to building the team toward a championship, whoever's in charge.

Jazz game comments, highlights, and lowlights after the jump.

GAME THREAD COMMENTS

Aisander D -- Yes, let's bury our rookie shooting guard even more for the likes of Larry Hughes and Stephen Graham. This is turning into a "let’s sign whoever was relevant 6 years ago" thread.

Ourdaywillcome -- I’m off to drown my sorrows by taking some drugs and then planting crops on Farmville. One of these days I’m going to manage to plow in a straight line.

BAD

-- Theo Ratliff was our only true center to play, and he and Boris Diaw simply couldn't deal with Carlos Boozer, who dropped 33 and 16.

-- D.J. Augustin shot 0-5, Raymond Felton shot 2-8, and nobody could do anything to stop Deron Williams, who ended up with 20 points and 12 assists.

-- Kyle Korver (KYLE FREAKING KORVER!) scored 18 off the bench, going 5-6 from three, and even grabbed 4 rebounds. Stephen Jackson is better than that, but if there was a theme to the whole evening, it's that the team, as a whole, just didn't bring their defensive A Game. On the season, the Cats are giving up 103 points per 100 possessions, and last night they gave up 112. Not good times.

GOOD

-- Gerald Wallace's step forward this season has made everything -- yes, everything -- worthwhile. Maybe I'm just starved for an All Star I can call my own and I'm bonding to him the way I've bonded to my boys Pablo Sandoval and Tim Lincecum in baseball, but the beautiful basketball he's given us has made the rest of the drama bearable. 27 points and 8 rebounds, and he made all 3 of his three point attempts.

-- Tyrus Thomas scored 20 points on 6-8 shooting and 8-9 from the line. Dude is making a hell of a first impression.

The PGs put forth a Diawian performance

For the second straight game, Felton was visibly frustrated by the opposing team’s point guard. Davis and Williams made Raymond a non-factor. As wild as it sounds, Ray Ray actually ran the offense better than DJ. I know LB is hard on PGs, but Augustin needs to push through this. There are only two PGs on the roster and this team cannot afford to have both of them playing badly.

Another interesting note from the sale article
A source familiar with the situation said Hughes would like to sign with the Bobcats. Hughes played in Philadelphia for Bobcats coach Larry Brown and worked with Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins when Higgins was in management roles in Washington and Golden State.

Higgins and Brown both declined comment on Hughes, who would clear waivers late today.

Signing Hughes to a veteran-minimum contract in time to be playoff-eligible would cost the Bobcats about $240,000 the rest of the season, a number that would still keep them below the threshold to pay the NBA’s luxury tax. Jordan and Higgins have said the team has no intention of being a tax-paying franchise this season.

I'm not sure I see the connection.

At least Hughes was good at some point.

I suppose that’s true, but that was long ago. I was just thinking LB would have another mediocre vet wing to ensure he doesn’t have to call Henderson’s number.

What's the difference in that and Flip?

I say sign Hughes and cut Graham…though that argument is that Graham can give Crash a rest…

Cut Graham…

Hey, we've got the Wizard, Larry Brown to help that.

Look at what it’s done for Felton! Sure, he only averages 12 and 5 now, but he’s at least at league-average in his offensive efficiency at this point!

We're learning night-by-night what I've been saying for years.

Ray Felton is simply not a starting point guard on a playoff team. Maybe we sneak in with him at the helm because the East is so bad, but it won’t be because of him in any way. Still, nobody should have been surprised to lose to a far superior team in a Western road game. Just hope we can get those 13 wins somewhere, since the front office has old our soul to do it.

Good point

I too feel that way. But Raymond is improving this year, taking better shots.

Still, nobody should have been surprised to lose to a far superior team in a Western road game.

This is a good point that helps me cope with this loss.

If his "improvement" means 12-5 as a starting PG getting 35+ MPG...

I’m concerned for his future as an NBA player.

Whoops I must have misinterpreted

increasing fg % from 40% to 45% is definitely getting worse. And 5 assists a game is just because this team emphasizes ball movement so more players get touches and thus not all possessions are assisted by the point guard. Chauncey Billups is good, right? In their championship year, he only got 5.7 assists a game.

Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is.

by WhatAboutBob_cats on Feb 25, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Chauncey Billips can score.

The reason his assists are low aren’t because he shares so much! It’s because he had his distribution role taken from him! Because there are people who can do it better than him now! One of whom moonlights as a center!

Oh by the way, how's D.J. been shooting lately?

He gets a pass why? I know you have a reason. I just want to read what b.s. you come up w/ Procton.

by and1droid on Feb 25, 2010 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

Because he doesn't ever get a chance.

When you’re a second-year player who barely gets off the bench, it’s a lot harder to find a shooting rhythm than a fifth-year player who gets 35+ minutes a game despite an embarrassing level of production.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 26, 2010 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

And we're off.*

Instead of the same old back and forth, let’s try making new arguments for once. How about something like this:

D.J. is a robot from outer space. His fuel cells are running low and he’s lost contact with his home planet. Once his transmitter is fixed, they can send more fuel and we’ll have the same old D.J. back.

Here’s another: D.J. is really Jordan’s 16 year old step child and he’s caught in a vicious custody battle that’s really messing with his head.

Procton. I’ve given you two examples of excuses for D.J. that are almost as accurate as yours, yet far more entertaining. Sheesh, it’s almost like you’re trying NOT to make friends or something.

*All arguments made against D.J. are merely to point out the blatant hypocrisy exhibited by certain bloggers and do not reflect my true feelings on D.J. skills or abilities.

Yeah, you're right.

Your points are just as “accurate” outside of the fact that they have nothing to do with reality. My idea is entirely feasible because, well, it’s true.

There are things Derek Fisher can do very well.

That offense just limits his role. He’d certainly be putting up better numbers for Brown than Felton.

What this team needs is more losses.

I’m dead serious.

It’s true our guards are shooting poorly but there is a reason for it. Last night, for the fourth game in a row, the Bobcats gave up on Larry Brown’s set plays and began opting for low percentage jumpers in the third quarter. We went over 8 minutes without a single inside shot and during that time the Jazz took over. Public enemy number one was Stephen Jackson. Don’t let his numbers fool you. The moment he started “Jaxing” up the jumpers the forwards gave up even trying to post up or make cuts into the passing lanes. It creates a multitude of problems.

First, the defenders come out further toward the perimeter. The Bobcats aren’t a great outside shooting team to begin with and when the shots become contested it drops our percentage even further. While it does spread the floor and open those passing lanes it does no good if nobody is driving the lanes anymore. With fewer Cats inside the paint when the ball is “Jaxed” up, we get less rebounding opportunities. While Jackson is capable of scoring well from the outside, our other guards are sporadic at best and Wallace is much more effective inside than he is when he’s trying multiple treys.

Coach Brown sees it too. Once the set plays go out the window and we start opting for jumpers Brown starts barking at his forwards from the sidelines. But bared teeth and threats aren’t enough. It’s time for LB to pull the guilty parties off the court and bench them until they learn to play the game the way he wants them to. If this means pulling Jax or Diaw during an important stretch of the game and replacing them with our rookies, so be it. Yeah, I hear you. “That would cost us the game! We’d be handing it right over to our opponents!” My response to that is, “exactly what game will it cost us?” I haven’t seen many wins on the ledger since this trend started. It would only take a game or two before the egos would be reined in and the guilty parties revert back to the set plays that brought us the successes we’ve enjoyed this season.

The upside is a return to our competitive and winning form. In addition, our rookies – particularly Derrick Brown – would pick up some minutes for at least a few games. The downside is the likelihood for a couple of more painful losses. But so what? If the situation isn’t changed we’re going to lose them anyways. It’s time for LB to adopt an “if you want to play on this team you will play MY way or else” position. Otherwise teams will continue to pull away from us and kill us on the boards every night the moment we abandon the game plan and start throwing bombs from long distance instead of using the inside. Yeah, I know our centers are hurt. But we have a pair of recent acquisitions that should help us until Nazr’s back is healthy. One of the reasons THEY have been successful is that they are effective inside. THE reason the team has NOT been successful since they arrived is that we go long stretches shooting from 18 feet away instead of passing the rock to them.

by Ourdaywillcome on Feb 25, 2010 11:32 AM EST reply actions

Why would that tactic work?

Brown’s got one foot out the door everywhere he’s ever gone. With Postolos likely close to taking control of the team, Brown’s as good as gone in April.

Oh, and if you’re really calling 36-year-old Theo Ratliff and his sub-5.0 PPG since, say, 2003 “effective inside,” why not just put Diop in there?

Advance apologies if the contents of this sports-based post offended you. I'm just aiming to educate the masses. My law professor says they're asses.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 25, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

I understand that your logic, Michael, is that 3 games an NBA player's measure does not make...

but…Diop’s a bust and we’re stuck with him.
So far…and I stress…so far…Theo is outplaying Diop.

As for lose more…
I really don’t know what it would take to guarantee some PT for the inexperienced…

But I am starting to lean harded and harder towards the team getting better being more important than a flash in the pan playoff appearance.

by andrewlail76 on Feb 25, 2010 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

I, too, don't understand why a player isn't benched for non-productivity

Diaw shouldn’t be back on the floor until he can show he can do more than bobble passes and make good passes that the PG should be making.

I also don’t like the 30+ head fakes and jukes that Jax has been making lately. If your shot just isn’t falling, that stuff is just taking time away from someone that could make a play, having time to make a play.

by andrewlail76 on Feb 25, 2010 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

But he HAS to "make good passes that the PG should be making."

Our PG can’t make them!

Zydrunas Ilgauskas was just bought out by Washington

Let make him an offer he can’t refuse. A minimum salary, a little JAX love, a warm Hendo shoulder to nap on, a class on injury avoidance at the 5 taught by Professors Ajinca, Chandler, Diop & Mohammed, and a chance to see Crash create 48 minutes of highlights every game.

That

Would make for a very interesting first round series.

Ilgauskas wants to win a championship.

There is exactly zero chance of that happening here, whereas there’s a team for whom he happens to be the career leader in games played that he really likes that has a great chance of getting one. Not gonna happen.

Not saying this will happen

but I read that the NBA may block Z from going back to Cleveland.

Interesting to hear about the potential block

Z has family in Cleveland and I believe both he and the Cavs were set on it happening.
