Who you got?

I saw this post on mavsmoneyball and I am going around sbnation to see who sbnation thinks is better.

"We have all heard this question before LeBron or Kobe. Obviously both are great and I think the general public is split on who is better, similar to Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. But we are not the general public, since we know more about the NBA. I want to see which side the hard core fans are on. Which hall of fame player do you want on your team, King James or The Black Mamba?"

Kobe.

There is no comparison even though I like Lebron better. Lebron is one of the most physically dominant players of all time if not THE most. But Kobe is Kobe.

Lebron

It took Bryant 13 years to lead his team to the Championship (without Shaq obviously). The thing that finally got Kobe over the hump was learning to be selfless and spread the ball around. It didn’t hurt that he was surrounded with Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Andrew Bynum and more. Couple this with having the greatest coach in NBA history (arguably) in Phil Jackson and I think they had a recipe for success.

Conversely, Lebron has never had a HoF coach to mentor him, or draw up game plans. He’s in his 7th season and only now have the Cavs brought in a legitimate scoring big man in Antawn Jamison. I don’t think James is as clutch as Kobe yet, but I think you’ll see Lebron get his ring in the next 6 years, before the deadline of Kobe doing it without Shaq.

I think you're forgetting how good Ilgauskas was.

The guy was scoring almost 17 PPG in LeBron’s second season, and was a more than competent offensive big man before the last year or two.

I'll take LeBron if we're talking about overall ability.

The numbers of things things James can do (and do really well) is insane for a player of his size. His athletic ability is off the charts, and he’s also a player who can focus in on his weaknesses and improve his game (see his improvements in long-range shooting, defense, playmaking, and rebounding since entering the league.)

If the question is who would you want on your team

I’ll take Lebron. But in terms of all time greats, Lebron needs a ring before he can be included in the discussion imo

Who cares?

As far as I’m concerned, a player’s ability to win a championship has nothing to do with whether they’re a great player or not. No single player can will his team to a championship in a playoff series format. Single-elimination tourney, maybe, but not four seven-game series.

It depends.

If we’re going for a championship this year, it’s Kobe. If I’m building a franchise from scratch, it’s LeBron. LBJ needs to develop a more consistent jump shot. Kobe is a pure player. If he was LBJ’s size, he would be the most dominant ever. James abilities stem a lot from his amazing athleticism. He’s a great player already, just not as skilled as Kobe.

I dunno, man...

Maybe you’re right on a game-to-game basis, but I’ll take 50% shooting and 35% from three from a wing who’s taking the vast majority of my team’s shots. Kobe’s never been at 50% shooting, and his three-point shooting was even worse in each season from 2-6.

I'm not penalizing him for being bigger

I’m letting you know how I feel about the situation and I think you are taking what I’m saying entirely the wrong way. What I am saying, is Kobe is the more skilled player of the two. His jump shot is better, his dribbling is better, his footwork is better, his game is better. That’s not me saying, I would take Kobe over LeBron in a draft because, like I said, LeBron has way more of an impact. Put it like this, if Kobe had LBJ’s size, he would be dominant, and if LBJ had the skill that Kobe possesses, he would truly be unstoppable.
