Bobcats Trounce Cavs 110-93
The Charlotte Bobcats thoroughly dominated a disinterested Cleveland Cavaliers team, 110-93. After losing a heartbreaker to the Nuggets last night, the Cavs looked like they might pull away in the first quarter, but fell back in the second quarter, and completely fell apart in the second half.
LeBron James finished with "only" 22 points, 9 assists, and 3 rebounds. By the fourth quarter, he was openly frustrated and passing the ball away possession after possession instead of driving to the hoop -- seeing as he's the best in the world at that, maybe he should have done it more. That said, it was the second half of a back to back, and he'd been beat up all game.
Also notable for the Cavs, Antawn Jamison played possibly the worst game of his life, coming off the bench and shooting 0-12 from the field, including 0-4 from three, had three airballs, and was blocked 5 times. The only saving grace was his 7 rebounds, and I'd bet most of those were uncontested boards.
Game thread comments, highlights, and lowlights after the jump.
GAME THREAD COMMENTS
Stevarino -- I think I figured out why Tyrus is so motivated. He gets to wear a headband.
andrewlail76 -- Jax must have made love to these trades.
BAD
-- Nazr Mohammed obviously isn't back to full strength. At a certain point, they've got to just go with our defensive centers, or Boris Diaw, and shut down the other team's offense even more than they have thus far.
GOOD
-- There's no way Tyrus Thomas plays this well again, is there? In 25 minutes, he scored 9 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, blocked 6(!) shots, and took out an entire row of courtside seats diving for a ball going out of bounds.
-- Stephen Jackson scored 29 points on 17 attempts. His 3-7 from three also helped lead the Cats to 9-19 overall from beyond the arc.
-- Gerald Wallace was his usual self, scoring 17 points on 11 attempts, and pulling down 8 rebounds. With Taz-mas around now, perhaps he won't get as many rebounding opportunities.
-- Theo Ratliff is around for only one reason: defend the rim. And he certainly did that, getting 2 blocks, redirecting who knows how many more. He'll most likely be an upgrade on Diop, and could be a useful rotation guy with both Nazr and Tyson Chandler.

now that i'm done cheesing(for a second)
The trade looks to be a good thing for us. But, just like Antwan Jamison sucking it up tonight, things will change at some point. I am VERY much looking forward to seeing how this new lineup works out for us. The thing I noticed that LB did in this game was constant rotation. Now that we have REAL big men to rotate, it’s working out. Stevie Graham didn’t look as dumb as he normally does. More playing time is making him better, but I still don’t like him. Theo was everything I could have hoped for and more. His ability to tip the ball to players off of offensive rebounds was a big deal tonight. He comes in and the first thing he does is bitchmakes ‘Twan. Dj played a great game tonight as well. I thought he distributed the ball well and took good shots. He also literally ran a circle around Shaq and then nailed a jumper…pretty funny. Boris Diaw was fired UP early on when JJ Hickson and Carrot Top tried to body him up a little more aggressively than he’s used to. Good stuff. Can’t say enough about Jack tonight. He made sweet love to glorious pressure all game.

So if Thomas can play this well, with no clue of Brown's plays...
Then what does it mean for him once he starts to catch on? Maybe he’s not so easy to teach and it bogs him down? Maybe he’s never had a true NBA teacher, and excels to his 4th over all draft potential? At this point it looks like we just got a lot better!

Tyrus Thomas From a Bulls Fan
Trust me, you guys pants us on this trade….he’s a great player that never got consistent minutes because he didn’t respect the coaching staff. He’s going to make a big difference for you
Like to heat that!
Larry Brown seems to be good at being tough, yet still keeping the peace with guys like Thomas. I got my fingers crossed.. Let’s do this!

I liked his interview after the game
Something along the lines of “Coach has already gotten on me, but I like that he gets on me and then lets me go out and fix it. I’ve never had that before.” Interesting.
Every time Tyrus made a mistake our dumbass coach would get the hook out.
and he never let him finish a game in crunch time. Tonight was his first opportunity to close out a victory this season. Don’t just concentrate on his blocks. He is so quick, he can alter a lot of other shots with his help defense by rotating off his man and still be quick enough to recover after he’s caused havoc for someone who has driven by his man in the paint. His defensive potential is downright scary, as you will discover.
If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

Then his interview was very telling
LB loves to teach. Thomas might very well excel under him if he doesn’t let LB get uder his skin.

Hmm...
Gonna be hard for him to respect a 70-year-old with whom he likely has very little in common.

Wait until Tyrus gets acclimated to this system. There is a reason he's called the human highlight film.
Jump over to Blogabull. I post there as Tyrusmancrush for more details. I recently did a fanpost called in defense of Tyrus, spelling out some of his stats.
Many of us are torn that this uber-athlete was forced off our roster by a petty, no-nothing vindictive coach. He’s never had a real coach and was sulking because he had to sit behind players who were much inferior to him. In his last games as a Bull he converted 38-61 for a .623 average.
Vinny hated him and the feeling was mutual. He was a young project and under the proper guidance and tough love, he may blossom into one of the best defensive players in the league. He’s already 7th in blocked shots and 4th in steals with his quickness in limited minutes. His monster dunks will bring the house down which is the reason some have labeled him the human pogo stick. Give him encouragement, than just sit back to watch one of the most exciting young players in the NBA.
For some examples, go to Youtube and look up Tyrus Thomas highlights. The best is yet to come or as they say…..you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

He's already got the second best DRtg in the league (Howard is first).
I hope he takes to Larry Brown, because I think LB can really help him find his way.

I am slightly concerned
Because LB is known to pour it on pretty heavily. His “tough love” put DJ Augustine in a serious slump for the first 1/3 of the season. However, hopefully Thomas can do like Felton and take the advice without letting it get to him.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
I think what Tyrus said about LB letting him play through his mistakes was key, though.
Tyrus said no one had done that before, they’d admonished him and told him what he did wrong, but never gave him a shot to go out and turn it around. So long as LB lets him play through missteps, and Tyrus keeps playing defense, he’ll get time. I mean, shit, Stephen Graham gets time.
by Spider Jerusalem on Feb 20, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions
LBs hardcore!
The guy has no clue about how we play, yet shows up grabs 12 boards and 6 blocks… Yet LB is calling out his mistakes??? Wow!

Graham is also a vet.
Tyrus doesn’t have that going for him.

He played only one year of high school ball (as a point guard), than one year of college
where he got by strictly on his unbelievable athleticism. He was only 19 coming into the league and had trouble adjusting to the big city, having grown up in a small town and his dad being in prison. Scott Skiles was frustrated with his lack of fundamentals and than he was victimized by playing under the two worst coaches in the NBA, Jim Boylan and Vinny DelNegro who became the Bulls head coach without ever having any experience even at the high school level. The Bulls run no plays for him offensively and have him sit out at the perimeter to set screens for D Rose. He is still a somewhat raw talent with IMHO unlimited upside under the right system.
Tyrus actually leads the Bulls % wise in shots from 17-23 feet, but would be much more effective driving to the hoop (he’s #1 per minutes played) in drawing fouls on the Bulls and if someone could throw him an alley oop occasionally, there is no one in the league that can sky as high as he can. He makes a lot of turnovers because he has a tendency to play too fast, but he’s an excellent passer and is as quick as lightening. Many of us Bulls fans are mourning his loss already, but our loss is your big gain.

This wasn't even a very good game for TT.
Reggie Miller knows! He can average a triple-double! Rebounds, points, and blocks!
…
Eh. TT IS this good, though, and if Larry Brown and TT can mesh the Bobcats will be one scary, scary team in the playoffs this year. It made sense from the Bulls’ perspective to dump TT, but that’s only because the org as a whole is a bunch of morons and couldn’t “teach” him or “play him when he is the best PF on your team”, which happened … often.
I hope TT does good, and I’ll be pseudo-watching. :P
Go Rockets/Nets[CDR]/Bucks[Jennings]!
Well he did jump into a fairly tough Larry Brown system
With no clue what was going on. I hope you are right, and his ceiling is way higher!

makes me thinks we should settle for an #8 seed. Hahaha.
Kidding, kidding. Seriously, we need to get out of that spot I’m still worried we may hit a bad stretch and end up having to claw ourselves into the playoffs.

that was the first time all night where the HOME crowd
got into it. Was pretty dissapointed how the home crowd let the Cleveland fans make the cable box sound like their home floor in the first. I really hope the playoffs bring out the home fans.

So how long before Tyrus cracks the starting lineup?
That is IF he can continue to play at a high level. It sounds like being stuck on the bench was part of his problem, so the opportunity for minutes might really motivate him.
I’m speculating, but… I think we’d benefit more from him rebounding and defending, than from Diaw’s prancy offensive game. And Diaw’s offense as a change of pace off the bench and in small lineups could be more effective???

He kind of stuck himself.
He had an opportunity under four different coaches. At some point, it’s not a coincidence, it’s a trend. As to the starter/bench question: with as much energy as Thomas has shown regardless of starting assignments, wouldn’t it be better to keep him on the bench instead of risking putting Diaw in the game uninspired and uninterested?

SportingNews asks Thomas " What do you know about playing for coach Larry Brown?"
Thomas: It’s gonna be good. I’ve been with Lindsey (Hunter) the past year-and-a-half and I was with Big Ben (Wallace) my first year-and-a-half. All Ben talks about is L.B. this and L.B. that, and all Lindsey talks about is L.B. this and L.B. that, so I feel I’ve got a good background, but I’ve still got to get the first-hand (experience). I’m already ready for what’s to come. Both of those guys say the same thing, that he’ll be tough on you but he cares about you and if you just listen, the team will get better and you’ll get better and everybody will succeed.
Good answer
