Gameday Preview Charlotte Bobcats vs. Cleveland Cavaliers; Trade Deadline Wrap Up

Pump Up Music: Black Sabbath -- "War Pigs"

The Big Picture: My side lost the battle for control of the Bobcats this season. Ever since starting Rufus on Fire, I'd advocated that the Cats sit through their bad contracts (Matt Carroll) and their less-appealing contracts (Jason Richardson), or jump at opportunities to trade them for untested youth and more-appealing contracts, before starting a rebuild in earnest in the summer of 2011 around Emeka Okafor, Gerald Wallace, and whichever draft picks we'd made. But at a certain point, after they took on Boris Diaw and gave away Jared Dudley, and after they took on Stephen Jackson, marginalizing Gerald Henderson, it became apparent that it was no use to keep advocating that the Bobcats undergo such a rebuild. We're on this path, and the only way to make good on it is to follow through by making the playoffs the next couple years. When we get to the crossroads, we'll figure it out, then.

Star-divide

I'm still convinced that, long-term, I'd be happier if the Cats had set themselves up for sustained success and a real run at a championship someday, and the current administration's moves have only served to delay that jump a few years, but I can still be happy with the run for the playoffs.

Tyrus Thomas and Theo Ratliff serve that goal. At first blush, if used to their full potential, they will make the Bobcats deeper and better for the rest of this season by providing a badly needed defensive presence in the paint. Diaw is a solid defender, but he's no Thomas or Ratliff, and Tyson Chandler can't be expected to be full strength the rest of his career, let alone the rest of this season.

Per Bonnell, both should be in uniform tonight, a good thing, since Nazr Mohammed, Chandler, and Diop could all be out. Here's hoping they start with Felton, Jackson, Wallace, Thomas, and Diaw, the most athletic and long lineup this side of the Thunder.

For the Cavaliers, I'm not as much a fan of the Antawn Jamison trade as others appear to be. I think he's an excellent scorer who's not really needed since they've got one of the three best scorers in the game already. What they needed was someone like Jax, Caron Butler, or, best yet, Andre Iguodala, to be a good scorer, but a great defender, upgrading from Delonte West, Anthony Parker, and Jamario Moon. As is, if the Cavs don't get Zydrunas Ilgauskas back in 30 days, I think come playoff time they'll regret not having a big man who, at least, has no defensive or free throw liabilities. In crunch time, this means they'll have either Shaquille O'Neal, Anderson Varejao, or Jamison, out there at any given time. Shaq and Sideshow Bob can't shoot free throws, and Jamison is a defensive liability. And if you don't want to play LeBron at the four with both Parker and West out there, then you'll have two of those three in at the same time.

Key to Victory: Last night, LeBron James had a game for the ages, putting up 43 points, 15 assists, and 13 rebounds against the Nuggets. The Cats are as well equipped to cover him as anyone else in the league, able to throw Crash, Jax, and now TT (need a better nickname for Thomas) at him without seriously compromising their ability to guard anyone else. James will produce as he usually does, but I'm more concerned about Diaw and Ratliff being our only two centers against Shaq and Varejao. I don't have a solution, either. Just hope it doesn't become an issue.

Detail That May Interest .08% of You: Leon Powe, who's still injured and will be out for this game, had a shockingly good career at Cal. His final year in college, he scored 20.5 per game and grabbed 10.1 rebounds.

BONUS UPDATE: I know a lot of you will be going to the game tonight. If you do, consider stopping by to at least say hello to the Bobcats Baseline guy selling Sarcophocrash t-shirts outside the arena.

I usually have a good feel for how the Cats will play

But I honestly have no idea what Charlotte team is going to show up tonight. I hope the new players are able to contribute immediately. The Cavs should be a little winded after last night’s overtime game. Charlotte should come out hungry after that embarrassing loss to the Nets.

The Cats need to take this one and dig deep enough to pull out a win against the Bucks this weekend.

You got that right

I don’t think anyone can guess what tonight’s game will look like
We have beat the Cavs with our old lineups…
I see us as better than when we faced them before, since we have a bit of depth all around…

Negative is that we are thin temporarily at C…but we got some 6’10" guys that can fill in ok

We also have some athletic guys that can fill in at PF and offer some matchup problems

I got my fingers crossed…

On a side note…

David, the Felton shirt fits like a glove…

Being 6'10" and skinny isn't going to help a ton against Shaq...

Thak you Col. Negative

So many ways to go with this…
I didn’t see Shaq blow up agains D. Howard…I know…we don’t have a D. Howard
Shaq isn’t the player he once was…
Diaw isn’t exactly skinny…
I did say fill in OK…meaning, we won’t shut him down.

Shaq will…
a)Be himself and miss countless foul shots…
b)Get in foul trouble early off of pick and roll issues
c)He has the 50pt breakthrough night we’ve not seen since…

oooh

I forgot to lump in Ratliff

by andrewlail76 on Feb 19, 2010 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Uhh...

Shaq wouldn’t be expected to blow up against Howard. He’s exactly the kind of big, thick center we don’t have on the roster. And if you think Diaw is not a tiny 5 at 6’8", 235, well you haven’t been looking around the league much.

People who just want to make the playoffs and don’t worry about long term franchise stability read basketball blogs, too. ;)

I kinda like that long lineup David

But Diaw covering Shaq? That would get grim really quickly.

Here’s what I think we’ll see (providing Nazr, Diop and Chandler are out)

Felton/Jackson/Wallace/Diaw/Ratliff with Tyrus getting significant time off the bench.

Our future outlook isn't that bad

I expect a qualifying offer to TT for next season. Felton aside (I predict he gets re-signed) and as long as Larry Brown stays, the whole team is in tact next season with a little more experience and time together. We’ve shown we can contend for a 5 seed, maybe even a 4 next year depending on what happens with Boston and Atlanta. That next season our expiring contracts include: Nazr, Chandler, Diaw and all the rookies.

With that, we can make in-season trades next year with expiring contracts, we can get cap space (although luring a player here might be difficult), we can get draft picks with those contracts. It’s up to management to take advantage of the way the salaries work out. Jack, Diop, G-Force are the only players under contract through that next season.

Then again...

Larry Brown as the coach may specifically force Thomas’ departure if they don’t get along (as has been his pattern for his entire NBA career.)

My new life as a Bobcats fan starts tonight

Tyrus Thomas, crazy as this sounds, is one of the few players in the league who has the size and athleticism to even be considered a LeBron-Stopper. I wonder if that strategy is at least tried out, though the ’Cats actually have a few big athletic wings to throw at the guy.

I say there’s an 80% chance of him seeing over 15 minutes.

As a nickname for Thomas: Soul Eater or Eater of Souls

or something along those lines. I don’t know where it came from and even if that applied to Thomas. (okay, quick google search says “yes, it belongs to Thomas” but I still don’t know where from. Something about blocking shots and denying people their something or other. I don’t remember.

It’s creepy, but I think it’s bad as hell.

Here’s a good “Soul Eater” clip. (audio NSFW) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KeYoaoWZzY

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

good news

Good to hear that the guys are suiting up, what with our injuries and all.

I hope everyone that has a chance to go the game tonight has a good time.

I always sign Tyrus in NBA 2K10.

I don’t know what that means, but there it is.

I understand the lengthy and athletic lineup is cool and all...

But I fear we’re set up to get wrecked by a team like Cleveland if we’re gonna see much of Diaw and Thomas at center.

On the other hand... I'd like to see Shaq keep up with Thomas and Diaw.

reporting that both Naz and Tyson are suiting up and expected to play tonight.

As of 11:00 this morning, it was still up in the air...

http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_nba/2010/02/centers-feeling-better.html

They were both feeling better, but not totally sure they’d be able to play. According to Bonnell, Chandler was more likely to play than Mohammed, which is unfortunate, because we need as much bulk as we can get.

I agree.

Naz is bigger than Tyson, therefore he matches up better with Shaq. I don’t care how good Tyson is defensively, Shaq is a monster and he uses that size to push people around. Not saying Tyson CANT do it, it’s just gonna be a challenge all night. Naz has matched up well against Shaq before (see our first two wins) so I would feel better if Naz was starting.

Cavs fan here…although most of family lives in Charlotte….Actually Fort Mill…but I consider it pretty much Charlotte…. Yeah Mav…Shaq has been playing very inspired ball the last month. He scored 18 and grabbed 7 rebounds last night in the loss to the Nuggets…but early foul trouble absolutely killed us. As old and ‘washed up’ as many say he is…it really, really hurts us when he has to sit for prolonged periods.
