Theo Ratliff to the Bobcats

Per Bonnell: We get Theo Ratliff, of all people, to add big man depth with Nazr Mohammed, Tyson Chandler, DeSagana Diop, Boris Diaw, Tyrus Thomas, and Alexis Ajinca all already in the fold. That makes seven big men on a 14-man roster, not counting Derrick Brown or Gerald Wallace, who have both played power forward this year.

The Cats sent a future 2nd rounder to San Antonio for Ratliff. No big deal.

According to Wojnarowski of Yahoo...

It’s a conditional pick, too, one that the Spurs’ll likely never see.

I like it.

Low salary, solid player.

he'll be better than Diop and chandler

--Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER
--Someone should slap Larry Brown and bring him back to reality..

Better than Chandler?

Maybe the Chandler who can’t suit up.

he's obviously

expendable. we just need to fill an immediate need. once our centers get healthy he’ll be cut.

I doubt it.

LB loves him, and the payroll addition already got approved. Not like it’ll be much more than $500K regardless, and we’re not hard up for roster spots.

from Bobcats press release...

Ratliff, who previously played for Bobcats Head Coach Larry Brown in Philadelphia from 1997-2001, led the NBA in blocked shots per game in 2000-01, 2002-03 and 2003-04. One of only seven players in NBA history to lead the league in blocked shots at least three times, his 1,920 career blocked shots ranks 18th all-time and fifth among active players. He is the last NBA player to record at least 300 blocked shots in a season, finishing with 307 in 2003-04, and is the only player to do so since Dikembe Mutumbo in 1995-96.

This could be interesting

From what I read Tyrus has a ton of potential, but also attitude problems. Ratliff is the kind of player Brown likes, and has already played for Brown. So does that mean Thomas could become a basket case and quickly get benched for Ratliff? Or that Ratliff is insurance for Thomas’ basket-case-ness?

Probably the former more than the latter.

But I think Ratliff is well behind Chandler and Mohammed on the depth chart when healthy.
