Bobcats "closing in" on Tyrus Thomas (Update: deal is done)

Here we go: Ken Berger is reporting the Bobcats are "close to landing Tyrus Thomas" in exchange for expiring contracts. That probably means Ronald Murray and Acie Law.

===

===

And if they trade another draft pick... I mean, really?

UPDATE: Woj's Twitter says it's agreed in principle. Murray, Law, and a future 1st. Immediate thoughts, and more links, after the jump.

Star-divide

I love Tyrus Thomas. I realize he's gotten a rap as a bust, or someone who doesn't really care, but all wrapped up in that package is still a guy who blocks shots like mad and gets rebounds. Essentially, he scores as efficiently as Boris Diaw, with at least comparable defense and is worlds better rebounding. But we're not giving up Diaw. Incredibly, we have the opportunity to run out a stereotypically anti-Larry Brown team with length and leaping ability top to bottom, with Felton, Jax, Crash, Thomas, and Diaw. This will probably be our crunch time lineup, and we can say right now that the Cats will be better on defense in just about every way.

On offense, I'm not sure what this will do. Flip's minutes will have to go somewhere. Does this mean that Stephen Jackson will spend more time at the shooting guard then he already does? Will D.J. Augustin play more? Might (deep breath now) Gerald Henderson finally see the light of day? Either way, it probably won't be a drop off. In sum, we just got a lot better.

I'm not crazy about trading away another first round pick for a rental. I don't care that the team hasn't been particularly good at drafting in its history. We simply can't afford to keep giving away opportunities to grab young, cheap, talent. But in the short-to-medium term, it almost had to be done. This franchise has sold out everything to get to the playoffs this year or next. There's no use stopping now. So long, first round pick in 2013, or whenever it is. We hardly knew ye.

Ha,

I bet the front office trades Henderson saying “We will annoy David Arnott with all that we have!!”

but really, I believe the Law/Murray trade will be the one to go. I would be surprised if it went any other way. Good news to bring in a big though.

Not Liking This

If the trade includes a future 1st rounder as reported, it looks like another instance of pursuing short term gains at the expense of the future. I’m not against acquiring Thomas, but he’s probably just a rental and not worth a future first rounder, especially when we already are losing this years’ pick. But I’m not surprised. The front office is all about short term gain before the team is sold.

If it costs Law and Murray

I’ll take it to get a 2nd PF…
And we may see a touch of Hendo

by maverick24 on Feb 18, 2010 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know about that

Okafor was a very good draft pick. Charlotte just didn’t have enough good players besides him and Crash to be as successful as we would have liked. And besides, someone new will probably be picking in the future.

Take away the draft pick

And I’m very happy about this trade idea. Law and Murray for Ty Thomas would be a great deal for the Bobcats. It’s only the draft pick that I have a problem losing. I’d give up a 2nd round pick, but a 1st rounder should be a deal breaker IMO.

I would hate to lose flip, but its hard to argue wit this trade. We are so guard heavy its ridiculous, and the only true 4 we have is an unconventional Frenchman, plus maybe with this trade your beloved Henderson can get his game time you have been pining for all season.

I think if we can get him for Flip and Aice Law, it addressed a dire need, and we are not losing too much. If it cost a 1st round pick, I wouldn’t do it. Even if we keep our first round pick, it wouldn’t really matter, LB wouldn’t play him any way.

by artrip on Feb 18, 2010 12:17 PM EST reply actions

Good point about Brown and the first round pick...

But by the time this pick actually gets to Chicago (and it’d be at least 2011, because this deal would remove the protection and guarantee our pick goes to Denver this year), Brown likely won’t be around.

I'm referring to when the contracts we're carrying expire...

My mistake for not mentioning them. Since we were discussing future first round picks…I was thinking the 2012-2013 season

by andrewlail76 on Feb 18, 2010 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Getting Thomas certainly has its upside...

But let’s not get totally ahead of ourselves. With all the problems Thomas has had with no fewer than four head coaches in his NBA career and his attitude issues, this could easily turn into a disaster with Brown at the helm of our squad. I understand the rebuttal would be that Brown knows we’re desperate for frontcourt help and will put up with it, but there is certainly some potential for things to get ugly. And if we’ve traded another future first that could help us for several years in exchange (the financial aspects are a wash, since all three players involved could be released next summer) for a guy who might only be on the team for three months, have we not again mortgaged our future for a moderate short-term upgrade (i.e. the difference between a six-game series loss in the first round as the #6 seed rather than a five-game loss as the #7)?

by MichaelProcton on Feb 18, 2010 12:20 PM EST reply actions

If it’s just for Law and Murray this is a great trade. Even with Brown as the HC, I’m sure Thomas will be fine at least for the remainder of the season. Obviously there are outliers, but attitude issues don’t usually rear their head until an athlete is at least in his 2nd season with a team.

by Nomad_Hokie on Feb 18, 2010 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

But it's not.

It’s a first-rounder (and a minimum of three years of contributions) to boot. And Thomas had attitude issues by his very first year in the league.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 18, 2010 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

100% agree

I would hate to see us bring in someone for a half season and then they bolt. I truly think until we see Diop, Diaw, & Chandler big contracts go away, we are locked into bad times. A rookie superstar is not something that you’ll see every year. The next 2 years included.

by andrewlail76 on Feb 18, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

We could choose to give TT a qualifying offer

And then match any offer that he signs if he refuses. As long as no one grossly over pays for him this summer. We should have him for at least all of next season. Unless we don’t want him that is.

by and1droid on Feb 18, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

Not necessarily a 1 year rental

Depends on what the front office wants to do. They can let him walk, sign him to an extension, or make him a restricted free agent and give themselves a chance to assess his value. Not to mention the possibility of flipping him for something else. He does have value to a lot of teams.

Maybe Chicago buys out Flip’s contract (it’s pretty small) and re-sign after 30 days. Ideal scenario.

by drapht00 on Feb 18, 2010 12:22 PM EST reply actions

But I'm saying I don't know for sure that he'll be a good fit under Brown

If he doesn’t play well, why would they make any attempt to keep him? And if he has so much value to a lot of teams, why in the hell did we get him for two garbage players on expiring deals and a mid-1st rounder?

Flip isn't a garbage player. I know that's your opinion, but I don't know many people who share that opinion

A mid 1st rounder is a solid asset.

Chicago should be viewed as settling for this deal talent-wise because they didn’t want to lose TT the same way the lost Gordon last summer.

And what's with a future 1st rounder?

They owe the pick to Minnesota, potentially through 2014. I believe that means they can’t promise a pick before then (because it’s owed), and also cannot promise the 2015 pick (since that would potentially give them two straight drafts without a first-rounder). So it’s a 2016 pick?

I think it’s more likely a swap of first-round picks. Bulls pulled that move with the Knicks and it worked out splendidly

I’m looking forward to it. There are a lot of pros and cons to this trade, but if we manage to sign him to a long term deal I think it will be good for the team. We need a young big to come in and spark our team. Looking forward to seeing him play tomorrow(hope he does).

What draft pick did we trade anyway?

We can’t trade this year’s (thought that’s what has been reported) and I thought there was a rule about trading your first round pick two years in a row. I admit ignorance on this policy, but I know I’ve at least heard about it.

by and1droid on Feb 18, 2010 1:14 PM EST reply actions

It could be a 2012 pick… we’re just assuming it’s for 2011. It could also be ‘for a pick to be named later’ which is more likely.

by James The Aussie on Feb 18, 2010 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

by RV21 on Feb 18, 2010 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

TT would have to learn a lot before he can start. If this doesn’t light a fire under Diaw then he may lose his starting job by mid March though.

by and1droid on Feb 18, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I'd say Diaw.

Thomas plays with far more energy, which suits a bench player more.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 18, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

The future first is lottery protected (per Ric Bucher). If Thomas resigns I'm okay with this trade.

With this organization’s history of picking players via the draft it’s kind of nice to know exactly what we’re getting.

I think Thomas’ main issue all along has been a lack of playing time, which he’ll surely get with the Bobbies. It allows Derrick Brown to move back to SF, which is his more natural position anyway, and gives us a spark off the bench.

Someone who understands contracts better than I do: Can we now pick up Tyrus’ option for 2010-11?

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Feb 18, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions

Not really

We have these options:
1) Sign him to an extension
2) Make a qualifying offer.
      a) If he accepts he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2011.
      b) If he doesn’t accept, he goes out as a restricted free agent, which gives us the chance to match any offer.
3) Let him walk

by drapht00 on Feb 18, 2010 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks

My bet is the Bobcats have the word from Thomas’ camp that he’s willing to resign. Otherwise I don’t see how the draft pick would be involved. However, if we just sign him to a qualifying offer than means the Bobcats will have over $20 million in expiring contracts in Thomas, Mohammad and Chandler.

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James The Aussie on Feb 18, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Tough trade to make

If TT signs the qualifying offer. He’s a base year compensation player at that point (which is REALLY confusing). But yes, next year could be a really fun trade deadline.

I don’t see an extension in play. I predict he signs the 1 year qualifier, plays a year and leaves options for himself. I can’t see the Bobcats just letting him walk though.

Doubt it

From what I hear, all the Bulls fans are excited to have a ‘clutch’ player like Flip, so I don’t think they’ll be giving him up anytime soon. Though I’d also like to know when Flip became clutch. He was just the only guy who seemingly wanted to shoot the ball at times. Like Hawkeye says below, he’s on 30% of the time, but the rest of the time he just throws up 3’s like it’s nobody’s business and costs us possessions since he shoots the second he crosses halfcourt.

This is the thing I love about the NBA....

Every other team’s fans have preconceived notions about every player in the league, aka Flip is instant offense, Tyrus Thomas is all athletic upside. But then once you’ve watched a guy night in and night out you really get a sense of their worth on the court.

Prime example: Tyson Chandler, thought to be a great barely sub-all-star player, and now……garbage.

Ha...

I sure as shit didn’t think he was anywhere close to an All-Star player.

well you're a noted pessimist

but I’d say fans on average used to equate Chandler with a decent-to-above average player prior to his trade. He did have that one good 6 month period.

Don't even try to argue

I’ll wind up getting kicked off of here before the season is out for arguing what is, is with him…and verbal abuse.

I just hate pessimists…
We had such a great run without him here.

I'm not a pessimist.

I’m a realist. And the reality has always been that Tyson Chandler sucks. When the best Chris Paul can make you look is average, you’re just not very good.

Clutch?

Good clutch, but the pressure plate is shot…

Sounds like Tyrus will play some tomorrow night

Per Rod Higgins
TT was to come into town tonight and get with the coaching staff in the morning

Just noticed the time...

Guess he’ll meet with the coaches in a few hours and be playing today…

Nice, it'll be interesting to see what the minutes look like for everybody tomorrow.

If Graham plays 30 minutes tomorrow night because Flip’s gone, I’m going to scream.

Agreed

technically we should see a little Hendo…and a little Derr-Devil…
but the forecast is doubtful

by andrewlail76 on Feb 19, 2010 1:31 AM EST up reply actions

Well this does mean more minutes for Graham

Henderson will probably get Graham’s old minutes, and Graham Murray’s. But maybe that’ll be enough for Henderson to out perform and leap frog him.
