Bobcats Lose to Lowly Nets 103-94

Basketball is a two-sided game. You've gotta score, and you've gotta stop the other team from scoring. For most of this game, the Bobcats scored well enough, but they couldn't stop the Nets, and New Jersey came away with the win, 103-94. That pushes their record to 5-48, and the Cats drop to 26-26.

This doesn't scuttle anything. The Cats are the better team, but the Nets appear to match up with them just right. Unfortunately, they really needed this game because they're going out on another road trip soon, and if they maintain their road ways, things could get a bit ugly.

Courtney Lee did the most damage, scoring 21 points on 11 attempts, and playing his usual good defense. There was a reason the Nets demanded Lee in exchange for Vince Carter. Brook Lopez was plagued by foul trouble, but he and Kris Humphries(!) were both effective while in the game. They didn't really need any contribution from Yi Jianlian, which was good for them, because Yi was mostly a non-factor.

WhatAboutBob_cats: GRAHAM IS GOING MONSTARS ON GERALD

Ourdaywillcome: [Larry] Brown looks like he's about to blow chunks.

BAD

-- Stephen Jackson's shots just weren't falling. He went 7-20 from the field for only 15 points, including 0-6 from three, and with only 2 free throw attempts. Jax's greatest offensive advantage is that, by and large, he can back down opposing guards and abuse them with his back to the basket from the midrange in. He has to attempt threes in order to serve the team's wider goals, but he's got to make at least some of them.

-- The Nets outrebounded the Cats, 47-36. You might be able to boil down the loss to the rebounding disparity.

GOOD

-- Gerald Wallace was pulled for much of the first half thanks to Larry Brown's inane aversion to letting a guy get his third foul in the first half, yet he still put up a double double, with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

-- Boris Diaw stepped up in a big way with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Too bad this performance was wasted in a game where the Cats couldn't play defense for three and a half quarters.

-- Raymond Felton did what he could, scoring 18 points on 9 attempts.

Absolutely garbage

I came up with this trade…….Diaw and Diop for Elton Brand and Jason Smith.

Hell, anything to get

Diaw out of Charlotte. I just said Brand because that’s the first player at PF I know a team would get rid of in a heartbeat. I’d actually be terribly upset if we traded for him. It was all just a joke really, but I really do want Diaw and Diop out of here.

How the Bobcats should feel after blowing this game off the all star break

“I pity the fool who allows Kris Humphries to have a 13 and 8 game”

Just checking...

but has anybody noticed that coaching “the right way” has given the Nets 40% of their wins this season?

I think “the right way” style of play was not what the Bobcats played tonight or the other Nets game either. They just played bad all around basketball.

Why do you only show up when something bad happens?

It’s like the opposite of a fair weather fan. You’re only interested when the team struggles.

by drapht00 on Feb 17, 2010 1:36 AM EST up reply actions

Procton's usually too busy with his day job to come here anymore.

But when something bad happens to the Bobcats I send up the asshole signal (kind of like the bat signal but it’s a silhouette of Procton’s ass projected into the night sky). Procton then swoops into action making snarky comments that may or may not make any sense to the rest of us. One thing is for sure however, Procton will spread self-loathing shame to all Bobs fans who read these pages. He’s kind of my hero in that way.

I show up when I'm not too busy to do so.

If bad things weren’t happening (like, say, losing to a five-win team for the second time this year), I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do so, right?

Anyone else notice that coaching "the right way" has put the Bobcats at .500 after the all star break?

Am I the only one who’s noticed that A) this has never happened before and B) no one expected it to happen this season?

Procton, I just want to say that I’ve missed you buddy. I don’t laugh nearly as much when I don’t get to read your comments.

Clipper fan here, I stopped by here one time when you played the Lakers and just saying that I feel your pain.

the nets last win before this was against the Clips, but ours was worse since we let Kris Humphries go for a 24 point 10 rebound game. I mean, at least you guys got beat by their stars and not some douchebag looking d-leaguer. But you guys are still a playoff team so this loss shouldn’t bring all you down that much.

Humphries is hardly a "D-leaguer."

Kid’s averaged 8-5 this season, including 10-7 in NJ.

Quick pgs and awesome centers usually will do us dirty.

I hate that Mohammed didnt get much pt. After Mohammeds beast game last week, he should be getting some minutes while hes hot. Maybe hes catching up on his rest though since hes been getting overplayed the past month.

It is rediculous that the Nets own us this season. I know it doesnt mean that much but damn it is embarassing for the players, LB, and us.

by MR. MANN on Feb 17, 2010 12:47 AM EST reply actions

But and1...

That would have meant a forfeit because we would have been unable to keep 5 players on the court last night if we sat everyone who wan’t playing D!

Then again… a forfeit might have carried more honor than the reality.

For over 90 years Red Sox lovers said that being a Bosox fan was like death from a thousand paper cuts. You think, “well it hurts, but it didn’t bleed much and it’ll heal quick.” The problem is that all those little tiny hurts have a cumulative effect until your body can take no more and you succumb to what somehow became an almost mind-numbing pain.

After last night’s game, and the many little things the team did wrong to make us heroes to New Jersey Nets fans, I find myself slowly healing this morning from what I can only describe as my latest collection of “Bobcuts”

I'm not blaming our entire loss

on the refs, but seriously. The ENTIRE ARENA was booing most of the game because of INSANE blow calls and ridiculous one sided officiating. It ONLY ceased in the 4th for about half the quarter. I’m still IRATE about how unfair the officiating was. I really feel like it took the wind out of the team and dissuaded them from making any drives to the basket. Brook Lopez fouled out and the calls were still one sided…THAT’s how bad it was. Anyway…I had to vent about that. I considered getting up and leaving before the 4th because I felt like the refs would not allow us to win the game.

"Smokey this isn't 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules!"

by HAWKEYESBABY on Feb 17, 2010 8:16 AM EST reply actions

They were definitley

making phantom calls. They called this one foul on Stephen Jackson when a dude slapped his hand away, they called two fouls on Chandler that were suspect, one which he supposedly pushed a guy and the other he supposedly hit a guy in the face (hey, now that I think about it, Brook Lopez was that guy both times), and then they called an offensive foul on D.J. That’s the one that really got me confused. He wasn’t even in position to foul anybody. But, even with all the refs on their side, we still played terribly and played down to New Jersey’s level. On the flip side, NJ is really a good team that just needs a few more years and a few more pieces inserted into them and they’ll be a playoff squad. I know playoff squad and 5-48 teams that go together, but they have solid young pieces to build around. Oklahoma City was terrible last year as well, but now they look like a legit western conference contender. Give it a couple of years, NJ will be there.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Feb 17, 2010 9:04 AM EST up reply actions

I actually felt like NJ played good basketball last night.

Charlotte didn’t look lifeless or pathetic. If you look on paper, it’s pathetic that Charlotte lost. But watching the game last night, NJ really went after us and ended up being the better team. Those offensive fouls called on Charlotte were still ridiculous though. D.J. can’t even dribble across mid court w/out getting called for a foul?

by and1droid on Feb 17, 2010 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

New Jersey's only

real weakness in my eyes is their youth. It comes through in their play. You can see Devin Harris bouncing the ball off his foot with nobody there, you can see Terrence Williams throwing the ball away on back to back possessions, you can see Brook Lopez rack up fouls like points, but then you see the speed of Harris, and how easy it is for him to beat someone around the corner. You can see why Williams was picked up in the draft where he was, he has great athleticism. You can see Lopez being a solid big man for years to come, possibly number 2 behind Dwight in the East. New Jersey gave us opportunities last night, but we couldn’t hit the big shot or we had a turnover. I won’t feel too bad about this loss if the Nets begin to play like that consistently, but for now, I’m still mortified that we lost to the Nets again.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Feb 17, 2010 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Their talent level and ability isn't the question.

Of course they’re good; they’re NBA players. However, the fact is that they had won exactly 7.7% of their games this year prior to last night. Over the course of more than half the season, that’s no coincidence. A playoff team people are somehow predicting will make the NBA’s final four simply cannot lose to that team. Not at home; not when they’re awful on the road and need to win every game they should win from here out.

Percentages Means Nothing

Because like you say, they’re all in the NBA. They’re all grown men. So what that we’ve lost twice to the Nets? This is still the best position the franchise has EVER been in this late in the year. It’s the first game they’ve lost in a while to a team they were supposed to beat. It happens. It’s not the end of the world.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Feb 18, 2010 12:02 AM EST up reply actions

Who said it was?

It’s just an awfrul loss to an awful team. Not the kind of thing that portends a Conference Finals appearance any time soon.

Procton learned a new word

Portend. Please define portend for the rest of us Procton.

by and1droid on Feb 18, 2010 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

No, as a matter of fact, I didn't.

It seems you have, though, since you don’t understand a relatively straightforward word used relatively commonly in the modern lexicon. But here goes for you and the other remedial students. ‘Portend’ is a verb. It means to indicate in advance. A synonym would be ‘foretell’ or ‘predict.’

Advance apologies if the contents of this sports-based post offended you. I'm just aiming to educate the masses. My law professor says they're asses.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 18, 2010 2:36 AM EST up reply actions

I was actually joking because I saw you use "portend" twice and it's not a very common word.

It’s rarely used in the “modern lexicon.” And yes it can technically be used as a synonym to foretell or predict, but it most often denotes a bleak outcome such as a storm, political uprising, or economic recession. To “portend” an appearance in the Conference Finals for our team would imply that we did not want it to happen. At least that’s the most common usage of the word. The way you used it sounded kind of odd.
You might want to keep that in mind for future reference.

by and1droid on Feb 18, 2010 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

No, it's not.

Why don’t I copy and paste the definition of it since you’re not entirely sure of it.

–verb (used with object)
1. to indicate in advance; to foreshadow or presage, as an omen does: The street incident may portend a general uprising.
2. to signify; mean.

So no, it has nothing to do with desire at all.

Advance apologies if the contents of this sports-based post offended you. I'm just aiming to educate the masses. My law professor says they're asses.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 18, 2010 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

And further defining the term we see...

por·tend (pôr-těnd’, pōr-)
tr.v. por·tend·ed, por·tend·ing, por·tends

   1. To serve as an omen or a warning of; presage: black clouds that portend a storm.

  2. To indicate by prediction; forecast: leading economic indicators that portend a recession.

Even the example sentence from your definition talks of something that would be considered unwanted or troublesome.

Your definition also references an “omen.” An omen, like portend, technically has no indication of the outcome being good or bad. Both terms are usually used in the same way that the word “forebode” is used. To forebode, has a definite implication of misfortune. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/forbode

One of the prime synonyms of ‘forebode’ is ‘portend’ actually.

So technically you used the word correctly. I already stated that to be true. But the common usage of the word makes your statement sound weird. If I were grading an essay w/ that statement I would think you had just learned the word and weren’t really familiar with how to use it.

by and1droid on Feb 18, 2010 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

But you're no teacher, and you'd be wrong.

The fact that a word is in some cases interchangeable with another does not mean they have identical meanings, no matter how much you want to believe it.

I'm not a teacher because I don't want to be

I have graded essays because I’ve been a TA (necessary part of grad school) and have considerable experience in academic writing (both literary and scientific scholarship).

If every definition, even the one you posted, doesn’t convince you of the most common usage of the word, then I don’t know what to tell you.

As I have said before, you are technically correct in your usage. But if you write like that on a job application or grad school application you’ll end up looking silly.

by MichaelProcton on Feb 17, 2010 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

And, what is that supposed to mean?

No one predicted the Thunder to be as good as they are this year. New Jersey obviously has some very solid pieces in place behind Devin Harris and Brook Lopez (the two most important positions in the game), and they’ll likely have the number 1 pick which they will probably draft John Wall with and then be able to trade Harris for a few more pieces. Combine that with the fact that Yi is blossoming and they’ll have a flood of cap room, and they’ll be dangerous. They’ll be back in the playoffs by time they move to Brooklyn.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Feb 17, 2010 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

complaint is that it felt like the refs took away our inside game. we were afraid to drive for fear of getting murdered(Gerald-NAILED, Raymond-NAILED, Tyson-NAILED, Jack-NAILED…no fouls on any of them). We had guys bleeding! and on the floor on multiple occasions, but Dj gets a foul dribbling and shooting Brook Lopez a dirty look.
