Larry Brown explains why Dominic McGuire is playing more than Derrick Brown
Via @bobcats, on the Bobcats' Facebook page.
He's more of a 2-3, and Derrick's more of a 3-4, and we've got Boris, we got Tyrus, and we play Gerald there, and Dominic is a much better defender. He's a much better rebounder.
Brown is also still impressed with the 13 points/15 rebounds game.
UPDATE: Seems Rick Bonnell was the one who posed the question to Brown.

uhh you need points to win. McGuire can’t score any. Yeah I know…D blah blah blah. We need a bad ass defensive Center. Playing McGuire isn’t going to make up for that. You know I play great defense, but I certainly am not suiting up for the cats.

Comparing your own defense to Dominic McGuire's seems ridiculous at best.

That's a poor use of sarcasm.
It would be much better classified as hyperbole, yet it’s so far off-base it ends up having no relation to the point it’s trying to make whatsoever.

Have you seen Hawkeyes play basketball?
If not, you have no idea if it’s hyperbole or sarcasm, serious or tongue in cheek.
Not trying to start a lengthy dissertation on semantics, just attempting to illustrate that only serve to perpetuate tangents while simultaneously starting new ones. In the end, one benign comment can easily degenerate into an argument that has nothing whatsoever to do with the core subject which seems to me to be focused on whether or not Hawkeyes can fit into a Bobcats uniform or not. Hawk? Can you rock a pair of basketball shorts designed for someone 6’8" or taller or would they look like bell bottoms with a really poor hem design?

if I say no. Does that
discredit everything you’re currently standing for? haha. I’m 5’ 8" or so. Doesn’t mean I can’t D up like Rodman in the 90’s!(sarcasmic hyperbolistic statement of doom intended to enfuriate anyone with a higher education…or something like that) Can’t see me! I’m below eye level for everyone including Dj. I could lead the league in wtf-style rebounds and steals. Of course I would be 100% useless on the offensive end except for wide open 3’s. In which case I will jack them up Flip Murray style.

Lol. They should have an official stat for that. “WTF Rebounds”. I swear that’s what I say in my head every time D.J. Augustin or Beno Udrih gets a rebound.

No, I remember that.
When I first got here Michael was up on the soapbox regarding DJ deserving to play ahead of Felton. I remember posting that Deej was at least a contender for 6th man honors and thinking that MP and I likely had a lot of the same opinions about the team. History since that day proves the folly of that assumption. (G)

Tag lines sometimes indicate a lot about a person.
(Mine says nothing.)

But you're so much more than that Ft.Mill!
Or are you referring to mine and Andrew’s taglines? I guess Andrew got tired of waiting for it and my sources got tired of getting into fights with other people’s sources. (G)
Seriously? Andrew and I have been working on ideas for a long while together and when James got an offer too good to pass up, he asked us to join him. It’s our hope that we can live up to the high standards set by the existing blogs and work together with them to get the word out about all things Bobcats.
Our first collaborative project was posted this morning and we’re pretty pleased with it. If you have the time, come by and let us know what you think.
If you were also referring to Michael’s, I won’t pretend to speak for him, but I imagine he got sick of people taking offense every time he so much as blinked – kind of a Stephen Jackson thing.

wasn't referring to your tag line, but since you pointed it out
I just checked out Trade Street Post and it looks great.
I’m a little puzzled though, considering the crowded Bobcats blog market, it will have plenty of competition.
by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Dec 10, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions
We don't look at it as competition.
Almost everyone visiting RoF or BCP etc. also checks in at the other blogs, although they may primarily contribute to only one.
We also believe the fanbase will continue to grow, we’re joining a very large blog network with sites for most franchises and we’re already getting some visitors because of our affiliation with the network. As the fanbase grows, so will visitors to the blogs.
We were talking about the other blogs today in fact. Readers regularly post links at one blog to articles posted on another. Rather than be competitive, we’re looking at ways we can get all the blogs cross-linking and supporting one another. The way we see it, we’re all in this because of some common passions – writing, being read, and of course, The Charlotte Bobcats. These are things that we can ALL build on and the current market is too small for everyone to be adversarial to fellow blogsites. James, Andrew, and I are brainstorming the best way that the blogs can work together, promote one another, and promote the Bobcats on a national level. I won’t say we have it all figured out yet, but it is one of the priorities on the table. Once we have a good list of “starting point” suggestions, we’ll be contacting the Admins of the other Cats sites to see what they think or what ideas they might have themselves.
It may be that a couple of them will have no interest in that sort of thing, but that’s up to them. But I think we can all succeed together better than we can with separatist philosophies.

I may be an exception
For blogs I only read RoF. I read the Observer, but I gave up on their comments section since most posters there are clueless. I’ll give Trade Street Post a chance since you, James, and Andrew are in charge.
by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Dec 10, 2010 9:38 PM EST up reply actions
That's all we would ask.
We don’t want anyone “abandoning” their home blog. If we provide solid or interesting content and it makes you come back to us in addition to RoF or any other site, we’ll feel like we’ve done our job. RoF has been my home for over a year. Although I’m writing for Bobcatsbreak and one of the admins at TSP, you’ll notice my time here hasn’t exactly diminished. I have my favorite haunts for hoops info and RoF has been and will be the first place I hit each morning after I do my research around the web and check for email from my friends inside the Cats organization. The other stuff is work. This joint is my fun reward for being disciplined enough to do the work stuff every day.
(And in case anyone’s interested, I’m researching old Jewish and Christian texts as well as interpretations of scripture. I’m also studying Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Zoroastrian texts as well as Native American traditional beliefs across the subsets of the two main North American tribes. I’m looking for commonalities as well as differences in core beliefs and lesser tenets. One day the research will be published in the form of at least 2 books on comparative religion and Christian traditions over the first 20 centuries of existence. Boring stuff to many, I’m sure. But I find it deeply enriching.)

Then I think it's high time we create the category!
Not just for rebounds, but for baskets made with 3 hands in the face, amazing putbacks, or games where the Bobcats actually make the winning shot at the buzzer. This could be the season that the wtf play becomes a permanent part of the NBA lexicon of stats. No fantasy league could be considered respectable without tracking that particular statistic.

Actually, I have seen Iowa play.
Typical ugly Big Ten 35-32 basketball. Which I guess is cool if you’re a fan of the women’s game. That’d be a barnburner in the WNBA.

While I agree that Iowa Basketball is ugly.
Comparing it to the WNBA and women’s ball is pretty offensive. I suppose the fact the lowest score we’ve had this year is 51, and that’s not great, but we’ve also put up 111 this year as well. Poking fun at me is one thing…please get your facts straight on Iowa before getting into it with me. Besides…we’re on a BOBCATS blog. Where we continually talk about low scoring. Poor shooting. Good defensive play. Where we’re always the underdog, and should be better than we are. Poor free throw shooting, and often puzzling offensive stints of “what just happened?” Where our average score is in the low 90’s. Good lord the similarities are INSANE! Only difference is that Iowa’s coach is a first year coach with one solid recruit that wasn’t even with the team last year. Also had an exodus of recruits due to our awful previous coach.

Haha...
It was less an Iowa-bashing (I’m a huge fan of Ricky Stanzi, the football program, and Kirk Ferentz) than a Big Ten-basketball bashing, but you would be hard-pressed to argue the Hawkeyes are any less than a defensive-oriented team. Also…when you got your 111 against SIU Evansville (who?) , does it really even count? ;)

hey
when you have a team of inexperienced guys that have never played together. Save maybe 4(2 of which starters). 111 counts no matter who it’s against haha.

Stop the presses...
Per espn.com and nba.com:
McGuire is 6-9, 220 lbs.
D. Brown is 6-8, 227 lbs.
Diaw is 6-8, 235 lbs.
Jackson is 6-8, 215 lbs.
Wallace is 6-7, 220 lbs.
You’re gonna tell me that, out of all that tangled mess of similar heights and weights, McGuire is stuck at the 2-3, and D. Brown is stuck at the 3-4? Fine; OK…
Per sports-reference.com, McGuire blows Brown out the water in Total Rebound Percentage: 18.3% vs. 9.9%. Now, I’d love to see what Dominic’s numbers would be here without his 13/15 game (which I’m convinced will end up being the highlight of his NBA career), but I won’t split hairs here. McGuire is a much better rebounder than Brown (so far). Fine; OK…
On the same website, McGuire’s defense rating is 105. Brown’s is 107. So, Derrick is likely to give up two more points on defense. However, on offense, McGuire’s rating is 83, while Derrick’s is 119! So, marginally better defense ( + 2) trumps a helluva lot more scoring ( + 36), eh Larry? Fine; OK…
I’ll begrudgingly use Hollinger’s rankings to drive home my statistical rant. McGuire is 151st(!) with a staggering 6.6 PER. Brown clocks in at 67 (24 spots higher than Diaw, but I won’t go there right now) with a 14.53 PER.
(btw, Tyrus Thomas is FIFTH in the league with a 23.10 PER. That’s another rant for another day…)
I really don’t know what else to say…wingspan, maybe?
McGuire: 6’ 10.5"
Brown: 7’ 2.5"
Ummm…maximum vertical (draftexpress.com’s pre-draft measurement)?
McGuire: 34.5
Brown: 35.5
Son of a…OK, bench press! (again, pre-draft measurement from draftexpress.com):
McGuire: 12
Brown: 20
I give up. Carry on, Coach…
Thank you, San Francisco!
nice research.
love seeing that not only are we ALL correct in questioning this move, but literally almost every statistical category imaginable does as well.
