D.J. Augustin thrown under the bus

Rick Bonnell filed a story yesterday with some interesting quotes from Larry Brown, Stephen Jackson, and Gerald Wallace about the state of the Bobcats. If the quotes are a good summary of the conversations Bonnell had with them, it appears all three men are searching for reasons why this team that made the playoffs last year is only 7-13 through the first quarter of the season.

What strikes me about their comments is that they cling to the belief that the team simply isn't playing as well as they can, and that their troubles are correctable. On a certain level, we shouldn't expect anything else from highly competitive people who need to play with full confidence to be successful.

But there's another side to this: what if the players on hand just aren't as good as the players were during last season? It's disappointing that they're making moral judgments, like saying players on the team are "soft", lack "grit", "don't have the fight", and that there's "a leadership void" because they're essentially talking about other people's thoughts and feelings, rather than their abilities*. Essentially, Brown, Jackson, and Wallace throw D.J. Augustin under the bus and scapegoat him because he's short, slight, and is not a good on-ball defender. While it may be true that Augustin doesn't have any ability to get everyone focused on doing their jobs**, define their roles for them***, or be the leader they're looking for****, I don't believe any of those have nearly the explanatory power for the Cats' slide as Augustin's inability to guard opposing point guards, the utter suck at center, and Brown's inexplicable rotations that shaft Tyrus Thomas in favor of crap centers and Dominic McGuire.

Star-divide

What is showing up in the team's measured performance is a steep drop off on defense, coupled with the same kind of offense that we saw last year.

2009-10: ORtg -- 104.4 (24th), DRtg -- 102.8 (1st)

2010-11: ORtg -- 104.2 (24th), DRtg -- 106.6 (13th)

There's the what. But why has this happened? That's the question Brown, Jackson, and Wallace are grappling with. Here's my stab at it.

Last year, Raymond Felton had a career year, producing plus defense coupled with league-average offense (15.2 PER). This year, Augustin is playing better-than-average offense, but he's never been a good defender, and with starter's minutes it's apparent that the whole team is suffering on defense because he simply can't stop his man.

Also last year, Nazr Mohammed had a career year. While his defense was nothing to write home about*****, he played so well on offense that LB played him nearly 1,000 minutes, even though he missed a good chunk of the season to injury. The other centers who got big minutes last season were Tyson Chandler and Theo Ratliff, neither of whom were any good on offense, but both of whom have solid reputations as excellent defenders in the middle. This season? It's mostly Nazr's show in the middle, with Boris Diaw playing crunch time, and DeSagana Diop and Kwame Brown getting a tiny portion of the big man minutes. In other words, the Cats simply don't have a defensive big man they can rely upon to play real minutes.

Or do they? Tyrus Thomas has played 21 minutes per game this season, which is kind of crazy, given the results the Cats have gotten when he's on the floor. Just about any way you slice it, when Thomas shares the front court with Diaw, the Bobcats are better than when Mohammed is there with Diaw. Maybe Brown had the idea that Mohammed would be able to hold it all down, and so he had to find out in the early going. Yet, Brown continues to give significant minutes in recent games to Mohammed and McGuire despite the evidence of the actual play this year.

And that's before coming to the understanding that Wallace's tremendous play last season was probably unrepeatable; expecting Wallace to play quite that well again is extremely optimistic, at best.

To sum up: the team isn't losing because of character failings. They're losing because the players on hand aren't quite as good as the ones that were on the team last year, and because Larry Brown isn't giving his best players enough minutes******.

All of which isn't to say that character doesn't matter. It most certainly matters that some guys just don't get along with other guys, and thus don't play well together. However! We also know what these players are generally capable of doing, they're falling in range of rational assessments, and if that is the specific problem, it'll show up in their performances in a way that's outside of what they've shown so far in the NBA.

It's perfectly fair to criticize D.J. Augustin's play, and the play of anyone else on the team. However, ascribing poor play to character flaws is weak sauce.

*It's dangerous stuff, trying to mind-read. How you perceive one's exterior doesn't always correspond with how much one cares about a subject.

**Isn't that a communal job? That is to say, everyone keeps an eye on everyone else. Wake up. Work. Sleep. Rinse. Repeat.

***I'd love to hear a breakdown on what, exactly, is "murkier" about the different players' roles this year. I'd bet that most NBA people would read that as code for "I want to take more shots and not be bothered with initiating offense as much". And if that is a problem, then everyone ought to be an adult and explain and listen to those feelings. It then falls on LB to step in, clarify, and make a ruling on how to proceed. No one's saying that's easy, but that's the job.

****I'm guessing this means they want a teammate they can turn to for wisdom. Someone they can trust with telling their frustrations and providing authentic advice. Someone who will be there to help with any problem that may arise, but that is also there for the good times. In short, I'm guessing they want a friend, as well as a teammate.

Why are these guys asking for a leader? Shouldn’t Jack and Wallace be the leaders? They can’t do it without Felton? Troubling….

DJ is not the best defender but Jodie Meeks and other 2’s and 3’s have been killing us all year and less than 10% of that is beacause of help defense. We should trade Wallace and Jackson and start a youth movement Them saying they need a leader say’s a lot about the make up of this team. They are the captain’s and they need to be lead/ Really?

Spot on

This is an excellent article and analysis. While this year’s team is certainly frustrating, it’s good to know we’re only a game out of the playoffs in the East.

I remain hopeful that we can either (a) get our team on the same page in such a manner that we’ll be able to earn a playoff spot or (b) add a piece or two that will help accomplish (a).

Hang in there, men. It’s a long season and a worthy cause.

by Tex Cat on Dec 6, 2010 2:38 PM EST reply actions

This is what I was afraid of.

I heard Larry’s comments on national tv regarding his lack of enthusiasm about the game. Then I heard his comments after our ludicrous loss in Philly and half expected the local writers to pounce all over it. The nature of Brown’s commentary can result in only one of two things.

1. Everyone rallies around the coach in a behind doors team meeting, works everything out, and lo, like the mythic Phoenix, rises from the ashes renewed and ready – unless the losing continues of course.

2. Everyone hears about the comments and immediately starts finger-pointing and directing the blame. This causes more disunity, more losses, locker room arguments, bad blood, and eventually winds up with… well, see number 1.

We’ve seen this enough times around the league that you know the routine as well as I. Coach Brown knows the routine as well. He knows what happens. We may never hear about it but Jordan is also familiar with the drill. He’s going to walk into the Bobcats practice, or pregame locker room, and lay fire and brimstone. He has no choice. If he doesn’t step all over this nonsense he’ll lose millions of dollars. Why? Because it won’t take long for DJs fans to step up to defend him. It will take just about as long as it takes the fans wearing Wallace and Jackson shirts to rise up in defense of their heroes. The fans stop coming to the games because it has stopped being fun watching a bunch of guys hating on each other and refusing to give up the ball. The only winner ends up being Rick Bonnell because all the yahoos will come out of the woodwork to take sides, increasing his readership, and the activity at the Observer website. Yech.

Mr. Wallace? Mr. Jackson? You are the captains of the team as well as its public face and leadership. Lead dammit!
Stop whining about “the good old days.” Stop feeding soundbytes to the official mouth of the South reporter. He’s taken more leaks than a homeless alcoholic and let’s them dribble everywhere. This stinks. Somehow Bonnell forgot to mention that the only player Brown has been praising in every single dialogue with the media is the one everyone has started flogging in the press – Augustin. “DJ pushes the ball up the floor and suddenly he’s all alone. It’s happening every game.” At least Jax had the decency to admit his own guilt about that.

Well, at least one thing hasn’t changed since 8 months ago. The official puppy to be kicked in the Bobcats locker room remains a poor damned kid who can’t seem to succeed no mater what he does.

I am just glad DH is handling this stuff better than Adam Morrison

Morrison pretty much took the money and ran. He showed no heart or desire to improve. DJ seems to care about winning and contributing to the team. He may be hard to get along with off the court, but I don’t see why some believe he is the Cat’s main problem.

I remember reading last year that Flip Murray was well liked in the Cats’ locker room and that his departure from the team wasn’t well received. I guess boiterous and outgoing personalities are needed to gain the respect of the Cats’ current roster.

I guess he needs to grow a set...get some swagger, and get the attitude to match his gameplay.

Does that mean he becomes a beast of a defender? Probably not, but that assist to turnover ration is something that you will see being important. As always I “wait for it”. I wait for DJ to get guys to follow him when he sprints downcourt on offense. I bet I can count on 1 finger, how many games he had guys folloing him down the court on a break. DJ creates fast breaks with his speed, and has to call a set play because no one is his trailer in the play. I feel for the guy.

Gerald Wallace is completely wrong for this

How can he have the nerve to blame the lack of success on anybody without mentioning himself first. If Lebron James, Kobe Bryand, Kevin Durant or any of the real superstars in this league played as badly as he’s been playing at least say they need tp step their game up, now….they may do it while talking in third person, but at least they’ll stand up and say they have to be better first. This guy completely trashed DJ by saying Felton was much more of a leader and a better fit for the team, and that DJ doesn’t have the fight in him. This guy isn’t fit to be a team captain, leader, face of a franchise or anything like that.
I haven’t even been a big DJ supporter, but he’s been a pleasant surprise for this team, he hasn’t been perfect but he’s held his own against players like Chris Paul, Brandon Jennings, Felton, and Tony Parker. I cannot believe this guy would toss blame like this and not even mention his own shortcomings. How many three point baskets has he given up? How much fight has he shown this season except for when he argued with a ref calling him expletives after completely sucking against the Miami Heat.
Wallace is a self centered, jealous, prick, and unless he publicly apologises I have no respect for him over this issue. And who does he think isn’t playing their role? Who is complaining about playing time. If anybody doesn’t deserve the minutes they’re getting it’s this guy who’s played like a average player since the preseason.
DJ is now one of my favorite players on this team, and I hope he shows this guy up.

The first question I have is:

The captain of the squad shouldn’t be complaining to ANYONE about lack of leadership unless he’s standing in front of a mirror. But that’s just my opinion, and I’m not wrong.

A little hyperbolic for my taste, but a fair point nonetheless

I just don’t understand where GW is coming from. Maybe there’s something more to it, but even if there is it shouldn’t be aired out this way. I appreciate honesty and openness in professional athletes, but there’s a limit to what should be put out in the public.

Here’s the thing: he did this with Chandler last year. At the time we all loved it because we felt like Tyson didn’t really care and was just exaggerating injuries. That may be true. But he’s gone nuts in Dallas and if anyone saw our game with them there was a moment where Tyson threw GW to the floor and from what I could tell there was less than no love lost from his end.

Point being, maybe he’s not the leader we think he is. Maybe he’s the leader we deserve, but not the one we need.

I've been there.

In my music career I never achieved stardom, but I did tour with a couple of name bands here and there and one band I wrote and drummed for had brief national success and became local media darlings. We went from playing in front of 2 or 3 hundred a night to booking Boston’s mid-tier 6000 seat venues. During that period we had 3 roadies, 2 men running the lights and soundboard and never once had to pack our own gear. I like to think of myself as a basically decent guy. But I got to the point where the women, the sandwich platters, the guy waiting with the flop towel, and the hotel rooms were all just perks of the job. Something happens when thousands of people sing your words back to you and scream your name. It changes all but the most centered of people. I rapidly became one of the world’s truly great buttholes. I’m a decent husband and father now largely because I can look back in hindsight and see how I took it all for granted and started treating people like they were less than dirt. I know for a certainty just how low I can get and I never want to go there again.

Wallace is in a similar situation. He’s getting some national recognition, but here at home he’s a hero. His face is on billboards, thousands scream and cheer for him, and everywhere he goes people want to buy him drinks. I’m not saying he’s sinking to the depths that I once inhabited, but power does corrupt and Gerald is starting to show all the hallmarks of someone that is starting to believe his own PR. The adored frequently come to believe the adulation is their God-given right. He has no less than Michael Jordan giving him props. That would be like Keith Moon coming to me back then and saying, “love your work. I’ve stolen several of your riffs too. Hope you don’t mind.” If Gerald remains unaffected by something like that than he is a far, far, better man than I’ll ever be.

You know at the open practice, I followed Gerald half way around the arena trying to get an autograph.

I never shoved my hat in his face, I didn’t trample the younger kids, I didn’t box out the older moms trying to get an autograph for her son/daughter, and I gave up after I realized I was missing out on everyone else. I took 2 hats for autographs. One that container Larry Brown’s and one for everyone else to sign. I reserved the Larry Brown for Wallace and Jax to sign. I spent so much time chasing Wallace, I never even saw Jax. Wallace even looked me in the eye at least 3 times when I was following him around the arena, and didn’t once even make an attempt to grab or sign my hat.

I do give appreciation to Matt Carroll, Derrick Brown, Shaun Livingston, Gerald Henderson, and DJ Augustin for signing my other hat, and I did add Phil Ford below Larry Brown’s name.
Matt Carroll is a SUPER NICE GUY and was very down to earth. I enjoyed getting to talk to him about no golf match with Nazr for the #13. Derrick Brown was nice as well, though he seemed kinda shy. Hendo was kinda overwhelmed as well. Shaun was nice, and DJ was swamped.

Am I making a point? Not really!
Was I disappointed that I didn’t get more autographs? Yes.
Perhaps there is a point…I spent a lot of time chasing Crash, and it forced me to miss out on Tyrus, Jax, Nazr, Boris, Najera(I actually avoided him), Diop, Collins, Kwame(Never saw him), McGuire(never saw him). I looked over 9 guys to get 1. I didn’t want all their autographs, but my point is that if we focus too much on what we believe to be our All Star Savior, and he’s going to throw DJ under the bus, what kind of fan favorite is he REALLY? He is still playing hard, but if he was running with DJ on half of those fast breaks, there would be easy dunks and layups for him…and if there wasn’t, and Jax was in tow as well, the open outside shot becomes available. If you don’t believe me, take Crash and Jax out, and inset Derr Devil and Hendo when they get healthy. Those guys will run with him and you’ll see a different team on the floor. To hell with the 4 pass min. before a shot can be taken.

sad times

I love the way gerald plays and he has been with the team since the inaugural season but it seems he and everyone else is pointing fingers and no one is holding themselves responsible for the lack of leadership. The goal is to win championships not just make it to the playoffs i hate to say it but we are seeing that he and jax are on the tail end of their careers and we have traded all our picks away i love to see the bobcats win but the only way we have a pick this year is if we dont make the playoffs(correct me if im wrong i think the pick we traded for tyrus was protected) so i hope we dont make the playoffs and making drastic changes to our roster would not be a bad thing as long as we are getting draft picks or young guys with potential and honestly i dont see larry brown coaching a team like that and who is going to argue with him? trading gerald or jax would free up time for derrick brown and tyrus they need to play more…if you would have told me last year i would be even thinking like this i would of called you a lier

Nobody is commenting on the number of times Deej comes of the court and gets a congratulatory swat on the rump or pat on the head and it happens frequently. I’ve seen LB rip into Stephen Jackson like he was a freshly-grilled T-bone more than a few times as well. Larry Brown is an equal opportunity destroyer. Now if we can just find a way to help poor Derrick Brown as he struggles with coachitis…

I was joking about this, but I bet we could get some press coverage if we did it to request more playing time for DeeJ and a starter role for Tyrus. The press would lick it up. Maybe I could make mine a 10K roll, but it would be for public awareness, to show the community (and potentially a national audience of ESPN readers etc) that there are REAL people that are devoted to this team, and send a message to the players AND the team that fans have noticed. If we all wore shirts from our favorite blogsite(s) it would also increase traffic and generate some new unique visitors. We promote the team, promote the players, promote the city, AND promote the blog presence all in one afternoon. Is this a good idea or does it sound too grandiose for you? I’d drive to Charlotte to participate. As I said, this started as a joke, but we could actually do it and make it into a positive thing for the team and city.

You can start calling me crazy….

(might I suggest something along the lines of a Mickey Rooney parody of, "Hey! I’ve got a garage, we can put on a show!)

NOW.

I'd do it

I’ve always wanted to walk around in downtown Charlotte and see the sites
I’ll even push you around the arena as many times as it takes
100 laps around the arena for Derr Devil and Tyrus to get more minutes…
I’m game!

Wait for it™
