76ers maul Bobcats 109-91; Meeks hits 6 threes in first quarter

Jodie Meeks made 6 three-pointers and scored 20 points in the first quarter, and the Philadelphia 76ers never looked back in beating the Bobcats 109-91. It was a demoralizing loss for the Cats, who probably went into the game believing they were a clearly superior team, but found themselves in a huge hole through the first 12 minutes, and then unable get any closer than 7 points the rest of the way.

Game thread comment, lowlights, and highlights after the jump.

GAME THREAD COMMENT

WhatAboutBob_cats -- I can't wait to read LB's apology letter.

BAD

-- The first quarter was an utter disaster, and the rest of the game merely an extended disappointment. To pick a single stat that encompasses the crappiness, Boris Diaw, Kwame Brown, and Derrick Brown were the only Bobcats to shoot better than 50% from the field. Yeah, that'll work.

-- Brown came in the game for the first time during garbage time, and ended with only 6 minutes. Dominic McGuire didn't embarrass himself tonight, but it's infuriating that he gets minutes at Brown's and Tyrus Thomas's expense when there are no apparent, concrete, justifications for why he deserves those minutes over those other guys. Many of us have had the experience at work of seeing someone else get promoted or given special opportunities even though, from our perspective, he or she clearly doesn't deserve that treatment. I guess I understand that Larry Brown might be prejudiced against a second-year player like Derrick Brown simply because he's a second-year player, but when a fifth-year guy like Thomas plays only 17 minutes, McGuire's 13 minutes look even more mysterious. It's as if LB just wants to piss me off by playing proven mediocrities like Stephen Graham and McGuire, and thumbs his nose at rational thought.

-- I just want Larry Brown to give his damn reasons for giving minutes to McGuire instead of the several better players on the roster. It kills me that I can't ask him and, apparently, it's not a good idea for the people at these postgame press conferences to ask him directly and then call him on whatever BS he spits out.

GOOD

-- Diaw scored 19 points on 12 shots and had 6 assists. Of course, he finished with 3 rebounds (#bitterness).

-- Kwame Brown had his best game in a long time, shooting 4-6 from the field (including a final putback at the buzzer), finishing with 12 points and 7 rebounds in 21 minutes.

Bitterly dissapointing loss

I was really hoping we got the win tonight going into 3 games which I think are going to be hard to win (Denver, Indiana & Boston).

Our defense was poor tongiht (giving up 50% shooting), and since we have a below average offense we couldn’t make up for it.

Slightly concerned about the lack of assists for the team over the last 2 games but this may be more about our poor shooting than poor offensive ball movement.

Nice game by Kwame who seems to be improving now he is getting his conditioning happening after missing pre-season. Also happy to see Diaw get his shooting grove on and hits some shots.

Overall as stated this was a dissapointing loss, but sport is about moments and opportunities, and this is the moment, this is the opportunity for the Bobcats to step up, pull their collective fingers out and work hard over the next 3 games and show they can compete.

I dont’ care if we loose all of the next 3, as long as we execute properly to get good shots, defend like demons and IMPROVE!

by Warmec on Dec 4, 2010 10:47 PM EST reply actions

poor defense

I think every team in the nba knows that our team is not good in covering the 3pt area, so every oponent just need to practice their shooting skills. LB has to change our defense and has to give more playing time to Tyrus or maybe we really need Henderson to cover that 3pt area. I beleive that this roster is very talented except for the centers and that LB is not utilizing it properly..

We are almost on the bottom of standings and there is no other way but to go up..

I'm not sure when we would throw in the towel on this season

But I don’t think it is now.
We have talent to get to the playoffs again, but I’m not sold on the fact that the team chemistry is there. If we can get that up and going then we can still turn this around.

If we are still bottom of the standings by maybe Mid Jan then you look at playing the kids, and making some cost saving trades with contenders for picks / kids.
If we got to this point if would be interesting to see what MJ and LB would do. Does he stay on to the end of the year or go early? I don’t see LB playing along if we went into full rebuild mode later in the season.

If we start rebuilding, I see maybe Jax and Diaw being expendable and possibly our most tradable assests.

by Warmec on Dec 5, 2010 5:13 AM EST up reply actions

I'm becoming more and more convinced that our best trade asset is Gerald Wallace.

I plan to make a fanpost or something in the next couple of days after I’ve compiled all my data, but for now I’ll just say that it’s very possible that last season was his career peak and the longer we hold on to him the greater the risk of either serious injury or the rest of the league realizing he’s starting to lose his luster.

Agreed

The obvious thing to do is trade the guys who have some value (Wallace, Diaw, Nazr’s expiring, possibly Jack) and rebuild this thing. But that would take some large stones for MJ because he wouldn’t win a popularity contest if he did it and his wallet would be hurting for awhile.

I agree that Henderson has only played to the lowest expectation standards.

But Derrick Brown has played well enough to earn a roll of the dice at the rebuild craps table.
The problem is, other teams have seen it too and he’s the Player Most Likely to be Stolen by another team when the rebuilding begins. “Aw hell Michael, we want to make this thing work. Throw in that Brown kid and ya got a deal.”

We've seen the Brown method before.

He got the team into the playoffs. His next step is to accept the blame for everything that’s going wrong right before spending the next 15 minutes talking about how much the players are letting everyone down.

If he stays, he will only blow up the team through dissention. If he goes he leaves behind a team in disarray and an owner wondering how the hell things got so bad so quickly.

At our current win v loss rate we're going to be roughly 13 games under by January.

We eked into the playoffs last season with a big run from 6 under. If we perform the same as we did in the last half of 2009/2010 we’ll end up somewhere around 10th in the conference.

True fans won’t look at this with despair. What they WILL do is watch closely to see how Jordan handles this situation. Has he actually learned from his abyssmal experience with the Wizards? Will he make the tough choices that might just give us a chance to be contenders in 3-5 seasons? Or will it be more bloated contracts, more players coming into Charlotte for their 10th or 11th second chance. and more draft picks handed out like free samples at the Piggly WIggly?

Jordan is facing his biggest challenge as an owner. How he deals with it may quite well indicate just how long he remains an owner.

I wish....

He would hold a contest. The contest would be a competition to see who could be GM for one day. That GM can do anything personnel wise, that he/she wants to. I would make it a priority to trade Wallace, Diaw, Nazr and Carroll.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2bftv9a

I really like this for two reasons. If/when Yao plays, he is probably the most skilled offensive center. Defensively he changes shots and rebounds at a higher rate than Nazr. Kevin Martin is a true scorer, and shooter, which is something that this team needs, because Martin is not scared to shoot a three, and he gets to the line very well. Jordan Hill is in a Tyrus Thomas situation in Houston, where he should be starting, but is not.

Why Houston does this:

They save some money, and bring a player in (Wallace) who’s gritiness is contagious, and can help make a decent 3-4 puch between himself and Scola. They are not going to win anytime soon, so they might as well play their young talent (Budinger) and see what they may have in him.

Why Charlotte does this:

Why not? What do they have to lose? If Yao plays, they have one of the best centers in the game, if not, they have a huge expiring contract which could go a long way towards a big free agent signing. Martin is one of the best scorers in the game, which is something this city has never seen. We would move Jackson to his natural position, which is small forward, and have Martin at the 2.

Too big a shakeup for Houston.

For a team like that that probably believes it could be a legit contender if they’re healthy, they probably don’t want to so completely blow up their roster.

I think it's really keen to fantasize about Jordan doing this.

The winner would fix the team, become a local hero, get the girl, and a movie of the week. Art imitating life as Whoopi Goldberg reprises her role in “Eddie.”

But Jordan has millions of is own money on the table. So do Nellie and a couple of others. He’s not going to risk it on what is in essence a publicity stunt. Also, the sad reality is that anyone stepping into Rod Higgins’ shoes for more than 5 minutes will quickly come to the realization that trades aren’t made in a day, owners aren’t easy to please, and there aren’t many people around that can even begin to do his job, let alone do it well.

McGuire made the bad list twice

Why is it infuriating when one bench player McGuire gets minutes over another, D.Brown? Especially when these bench players have very similar numbers. Sure McGuire is two years older than D.Brown and he was a free agent signing instead of a 2nd round draft pick, but I don’t see anything to warrant getting infuriated about.

On the other hand Tyrus Thomas has much better numbers and and was signed to a big contract to be an impact player. Arguing that he needs more minutes makes sense. Unless certain minor injuries are still impacting his playing time.

Arguing about whether McGuire or D.Brown should play more is laughable.

Lol.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 5, 2010 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

It is laughable. It shouldn't even be an issue.

We have one player that sparks an energy burst from his teammates and the crowd almost every time he steps on the court. He plays all out every minute he receives because the rarity of those minutes make them all the more precious to him. He’s young and is making giant strides toward achieving his potential.

The other is McGuire – a man capable of playing long minutes and leaving a startingly empty stat line. He’s an almost invisible presence on the court most nights and regularly takes ill-advised, low-percentage shots.

You’re absolutely right. When Brown steps in, offense steps up. That’s something we need like vampire victims need transfusions. There is no argument – unless you’re Larry Brown – and nobody in the media has the huevos to demand that he explain his rationalle.

Brown has shown improvement with minutes…so unless we are hiding him on the bench so other teams stop calling about him, he needs to be out there and McGuire should be thanking his stars that he is getting a paycheck.

Orlando gets Jack, Diaw, Carroll
Charlotte gets Vince, Bass

Saves us over $30 million thru 2013, gets Tyrus in the starting lineup, and also nets a backup for him. Vince can provide some points this year and we either buy him out for $4 million or trade him before the deadline next year. I think Jack and Diaw would fit pretty nicely in Orlando so they might do it too.

"lol" wouldn't be my reaction, but yes, he did
“Eight months removed from their first playoff appearance, the Bobcats have devolved from a physically-tough, confident group to a team that, as Wallace describes, adopts a different style each game. In three remarkably candid interviews Saturday night, Brown and captains Jackson and Wallace discussed all that is troubling this team: To hear Wallace and Jackson tell it, the departures of point guard Raymond Felton and centers Tyson Chandler and Theo Ratliff threw this team for a loop. ‘No disrespect to anybody, but I think everyone was more focused on doing their jobs last year,’ said Jackson. ‘We had such professionals last year. We had Theo and Tyson, and when Tyrus (Thomas) first came here, he had a lot of energy. And Raymond led this team.’ Felton is a Knick, Ratliff a Laker and Chandler a Maverick. That means D.J. Augustin became the starter at point guard and power forward Thomas is growing into a larger role off the bench. Wallace notes a key difference between Felton’s intensity and Augustin’s more deferential personality. … ‘D.J. doesn’t have the fight. Not to compare them as far as abilities, but D.J.‘s personality is not as high as Ray’s was as far as aggression and attitude on the court. D.J. is more laid-back.’ "

maybe the guy is right on DJ

get someone like Baron Davis or Kirk Hinrich. We need a talented but vocal PG who can LEAD the whole team. and yes, someone who can defend the 3 pt line. Great teams have great floor leaders, and unfortunately, DJ is still nowhere close.

If there's one thing LB loves...

It’s lackadaisical, out of shape point guards that miss 60-65% of their shots. Plus, have you seen the man’s contract? It’s enormous. I think it’s something like $13 mil this year, $14 mil next year and $15 mil the year after that. For an injury-prone guard who is already 31 years old. This team is not close to winning a championship; adding an old vet while increasing payroll will do nothing but injure the Cats.

I admire your nostalgia for the Golden State Warriors of yore but don’t forget, that was with Anti-Larry Brown as coach (Don Nelson).

I just had a hilarious conversation on Twitter with a Pistons fan who thought BD would turn us into a playoff team

Here’s the transcript:

CG(@Cardboardgerald aka me): Can we all agree the Bobcats trading for Baron Davis would be bad?
Dude: baron davis would get you into the playoffs.
CG: Baron Davis would get injured like he always does. His contract is terrible too. $42 million over the next 3 years
Dude: oh sh*t, screw that money, but still your a championship contender with baron davis running the bobcats
CG: Nah. We’re a 7-13 team. This team isn’t going anywhere this season, with or without Baron Davis at the point
Dude: season is still young, and the east wont change much, near .500 teams will make it in again
CG: we’d have to beat Orlando, Boston or Miami just to get past the first round. Not gonna happen.
Dude: 2007 warriors
CG: Completely different. That team was an offensive powerhouse. Plus how many rings did they win?
Dude: no one is guaranteed a ring when you go into the playoffs, your just given a chance, and a chance beats not having one.
CG: But there’s a difference to having good odds [at winning the championship] (Lakers/Celtics/Magic/legitimate good teams) and having no chance (.500 teams)
Dude: “you play to win the game”
CG: You play to win the championship. This team has no chance at even coming close.
Dude: then they should forfeit every game this year. why waste the time showing up.
CG: Because teams need to make money [I was flabbergasted at their response]
Dude: well i guess then the pistons will steal that 8th seed from your lazy butts & go on to beat a worn out celtics team.
CG: Let me know how that goes, ’k? lol

This guy's not the smartest dude
then they should forfeit every game this year. why waste the time showing up.

That alone made me facepalm.

But here’s some of the other stuff he thinks: Boise State should be in the National Championship and the SEC is way overrated.

He might not be going about it the right way...

But I think there are supporting arguments to each of those positions, as long as he meant Boise in the championship had they not lost to Nevada.

my bad.

yeah, i probably didn’t notice the contract thing. and DJ is under the Jordan brand, so maybe Mike will just stick to him.

its just heartbreaking for me whenever guards like Meeks and Jennings take uncontested 3s all game long with DJ and Wallace are on the floor. our perimeter defense has declined terribly compared from last year. our guards are just as bad as our bigs. sad.

I understand

I feel that the three-pointer problem is a team failure, ie. Larry Brown. His whole thing is strong defense. And he’s not even getting that done.

is our defensive coach still the same from last year?

cause frankly, i haven’t seen our infamous “switch” defense from last year. and Wallace has not shown his lockdown D, like the one he always had on LeBron and Kobe last season.

You guys are fickle

One day you guys praise D.J, then one day you want him gone.

I for one, want him to stay, you can teach defense. Augustin has been more valuable this year than Gerald, lets get rid of him. Defense wins championships, I agree. But not when they have no offense, and Deej has been a constant all season long. He has shown that he will score atleast 12 points per game, and his assists have been steady. This is the first time he has started for an extended period of time in the NBA. Give the kid a break, you will feel stupid once we traded him and saw him grow.

No fickle here

I like him and want him to stay, along with Derr Devil and Tyrus, however I would like to see Tyrus mature a bit.
