Paul Silas wants to run
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5951811
This was in a fan shot, but HAWKEYES can attest to the lack of exposure in that realm. All credit for this link goes to Newsinz. And to get to the word limit, what say I?
Yes. This team begs for taking advantage of athleticism. Practicing with a 14 second shot clock? I really think trades should wait until closer to the deadline just to assess what we really have, unless of course a no-brainer deal comes along. DJ, T-Time, Crash, D-Brown... These guys are just begging to be out on the break. At the very least, exciting basketball brings in the fans. For example: I would rather watch the Clippers than the Bulls. Derrick Rose is very exciting, but watching Boozer on the block puts me to sleep. Meanwhile, the Clippers are losing but all I can remember is Blake Griffin starting an entire art gallery of posterizing dunks.
Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may be in for a wild ride the rest of the season.

Key quotes I forgot to include
“I want to bring some energy to this ball club,” Silas said after being introduced as the fourth head coach in franchise history. “I want us to get up and down and let it all hang out. If they don’t want to get up and down, they can come sit down by me.”
“We’ve got shooters,” Silas said. “We’ve got defenders. We’ve got shot blockers. We’ve got all the ingredients that you need. The guys just have to get out and play and believe in themselves and believe that I believe in them. I’ve found that if you have a confident player, it’s unbelievable what he can do.”
“It’s like a dream come true for me,” Silas said. “It’s very special being in this city I love and came back to. I just think this is a golden opportunity for me. I really believe that we can do something special. And that’s the whole key, that the guys believe and I believe.”
I just love the optimism and enthusiasm. It’s like the opposite of LB this season. I think everyone is going to be better/happier with the change.
Hey now! You had your 75 words already!
If you needed more you should have used them then!

i hope the game hasnt passed him by
and that this turns out to be like Brett Favre in basketball…
but every coach talks about how they want to run. LB said the same thing when we got Tyson Chandler and Tyrus.
im not drinking the kool-aid until i see us score 100 in back to back games

I fear you may be a very thirsty man.
A new man on the team that doesn’t ever get to take a shot won’t miraculously turn us into a bunch of Scorinators. (Scorinator – noun: Robot sent from the future to save the present Bobcats from themselves)
I think the freer playing style Silas is promising (as well as his player-friendly reputation) will definitely improve our fortunes, but he’s a coach, not a magician.
Anyone wanna bet that Stephanie Ready’s trivia question before the next game is going to be, “How many players on the floor tonight were actually playing in the NBA the last time Paul Silas was a head coach?”

Oh yea, crap. The topic at hand!
I’m happy to hear this. You know Silas is really going to be the “I’ll say everything Bobcats fans and Charlotte want to hear, but when the players don’t produce I’ll have an excuse to help MJ rebuild!”. I don’t mean that in a negative way, because that’s really how the situation is, and handling it any other way would suck for the fans. I think we have what it takes to run, but Boris must be off the floor. We need better passing(remember all those damn turnovers we have?). Jack can’t be out their either. Running lineup:
Dj
Hendo/Liv
UPS
Gwall
Tyrus
SMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAALLLLLLLLL lineup in comparison, but we have good defenders on the floor(minus dj), and 2 better than average shot blockers on the fast break.
I really want to see what we have. This season is what last season kinda should have been. Let Hendo and Brown PLAY and see what we really have in those dudes. Kwame is really coming along well with this team(god that feels weird to type). Tyrus with real minutes could just absolutely be this solid core of a player no-one expected him to be(except me…I see you in there Shawn Kemp…I know you wanna come out.).

Not so sure about Jack not being in the lineup
I know he’s lost a step but if you want to play run and gun, you have to include the only guy on the team who can consistenly hit 3s.
Oh no! We suck again!

34% of the time is "consistent?"
That’s his mark on his career and here in Charlotte. It’s also almost exactly the same as Augustin and Diaw.

Yeah, I thought about adding Augustin
But this team doesn’t have many shooters. At a stretch, you’re talking about DJ, Jack, Diaw, and Carroll. I’m just saying Jack fits that style way better than starting Livingston or Henderson at SG. They are hopeless from downtown.
Oh no! We suck again!

Haha...fair enough.
Although we at least can have hope Henderson might some day develop an average outside shot.

It's possible
I’m not real high on Henderson but he does have good form on his jump shot. Maybe he’s not hopeless ………

I'm not either...
But I think he can at least be a league-average starter one day, or an elite bench player.

I'm just glad that there is a coach in place
where Hendo and Derr Devil will both be able to be seen…and show their talents…
With LB, they might have disappeared unless they were traded away

So...no fanfare in the FanShot section? Check.
Thanks for the “bump.”
I am as psyched as anyone to see Silas shave 10 points off the practice shot clock, and openly warn anyone on his new team that dragging their feet on the court will be the easiest way to get benched.
I’m really just hoping we don’t make any hair trigger trades for 3-4 weeks, unless an a ridiculously lopsided offer in our favor materializes. I’m dying to see what kind of “treasure” Slias can make out of Larry’s “trash.”
Looking forward to seeing the power suit that Santa gave Paul Silas for Christmas.
r u kidding?
great comments… just wanted to say that watching Boozer is a thing of beauty! reminds me of Karl Malone more than anyone in the NBA (which kinna makes sense) sniffle
I just hate watching him play defense.
Makes me feel so overwhelmed.
by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 25, 2010 2:07 PM EST up reply actions
Malone in his prime was a monster
Before they went to the finals. He was WAY more athletic than Boozer ever has been.
This seems to make sense and sounds like a great move. I'm all for Silas now, but long term speaking...........
Look for Blazers coach Nate McMillan to draw interest from Bobcats owner Michael Jordan as a potential long-term replacement for Larry Brown should McMillan and the Blazers part ways after his contract expires at season’s end. The respected Paul Silas was a natural interim choice for Jordan — given that Silas lives in Charlotte, had been attending many Bobcats games and badly wanted the job when it went to Brown’s predecessor, Sam Vincent — and badly wants to win Jordan over to score the job permanently. McMillan, though, has a strong advocate in the organization in Bobcats president Fred Whitfield.

I can even see Silas lasting through next season. But that's about it.
It isn’t just his age. I’m figuring that hammering out the new CBA is going to pull a lot of time and attention from the owners. In addition, if the season ends up truncated or cancelled completely as negotiations drag out, owners aren’t going to be doing much in the way of player swapping or staff shuffling. It may just be more convenient to pay Silas what is undoubtedly a much smaller salary than a quality long-term coach would demand than try to drag someone else in.
But after that, if the Bobcats haven’t already begun the process, the team is going to be deeply in need of a complete rebuild. Jackson and Wallace will be well into the sunset of their viability, Diop will finally shuffle off into the sunset, wallet full and belly fat, and Nazr will be sipping umbrella drinks in the Bahamas. As for all of us? We’ll have a whole new batch of things to complain about and cheer over until the world ends in 2012.

Has anyone heard an official announcement of Silas' staff?
From what I gather, it’s Charles Oakley, Stephen Silas, and Ralph Lewis. I’m told the PJ Brown and Muggsy rumors aren’t true. Anyone else have the info?
Oh no! We suck again!
by Bring Back Primoz on Dec 25, 2010 11:58 PM EST reply actions
Let's make it happen.
As has been widely reported and talked about, the Magic are after a backup center behind Dwight Howard now that Marcin Gortat has been traded to the Suns.
And one such such player that might be offered up to them is Boris Diaw.
“Look for the Bobcats to try to gain cap relief by offering Diaw to Orlando for the expiring contract of Jason Richardson, a former Bobcat,” wrote Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe. “Diaw has a player option for $9 million next season, while Richardson’s $14.4 million comes off the books.”
While Diaw plays power forward for the Bobcats, he has the size to back up Howard at center.
But whether the Magic would want to give up their new starting shooting guard for a backup center remains to be seen, as it’s been reported backups like Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson are the trade chips they’re more in favor of using.
If such a deal ever came to fruition, it’s possible Gilbert Arenas would then step into the starting lineup at the 2 for the Magic, while Tyrus Thomas would likely assume the starting PF role in Charlotte.
by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 26, 2010 9:35 AM EST reply actions
Tyrus at starting PF?
I think it’s a fair bet to say that almost every one of us is expecting to see the debut of that very thing tomorrow night.

I would think that minimal changes to the starting lineup will happen at the start of Silas tenure here
But hopefully you will see an increase in minutes going to TT.

Yeah, I'm sure the Magic want to use Diaw as a center.
He’d do great against Shaq and Perkins.

Yeah, he'll get destroyed on a nightly basis.
I think the Magic are getting desperate though. Not since they’ve won the past couple of games, but before that, they probably would’ve pulled the trigger on a Diop deal. I don’t think they trade for Diaw. But, like me and Primoz was talking about, if the deadline comes and they haven’t found a backup for Howard yet, I think they’ll do it.
by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 27, 2010 7:39 AM EST up reply actions
salaries don't work out to just trade Diaw...but...
Diaw and Nazr…or Diaw and Diop…
Both work.
The first is attractive because they get a smaller expiring in Nazr…
I’d take J-Rich back…especially for Diaw/Diop…
Then we might even be able to sign him back in the off season…anyone want to venture his current market value? Could we afford him?

I'm sure we could. Just an estimate,
but I think at this stage in his career, he’ll command about 6-8 million a year. If we moved Diop and Diaw, we could sign him. That would be ideal.

Ray Allen just re-upped for two years and $20 mil.
I don’t think Richardson will be settling for anywhere near $6 mil a year.

by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 27, 2010 5:45 PM EST up reply actions
I just think as a whole, salaries are going to go down drastically after the new CBA.
I still think he’ll get something closer to 8, but considering Felton is making 7 for the next 3 years, I think 6 is fair for Richardson after the lockout. We’ll see though, he’s only 29 and still is a good contributor. Playing for the Magic may hurt his demands though.

Salaries (except for rookie contracts) are almost certain to drop.
Right now the owners are saying they’ll make it retroactive on existing contracts too.

What they gonna do with rookie deals?
Keep them the same? I think they should actually get an increase in the NBA. Now as far as rookie contracts in the NFL, smh.
by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 27, 2010 6:50 PM EST up reply actions
Rookie contracts are so comparatively small they're off the owner's radar.
They want over 300 million dollars in player salary cuts – the majority of it coming from the top-paid players. They also want to cut the maximum length of contracts by 2 years so there will be fewer seasons for an escalating salary contract.

I don’t think Silas and his staff will care much for the lethargic play of Boris Diaw…TT should start simply based on his energy and athletecism…Makes sense anyway…
Tomorrow will tell...
But same token…Boris was part of a fast paced offense in Phoenix.
Guess we’ll see…
