To Rebuild Or Not To Rebuild, That Is The Question
After another disheartening 30 point loss to a team we should be "superior" to, I just don't see any reason for the misery to continue. Watching the likes of the John Wall-less Washington Wizards absolutely dominate your team can have a negative effect on your outlook for a team on any night, but last night really was about as rock bottom as a team in the NBA can get, and I really wasn't prepared for it. OK John Hollinger, you win this one. But unlike your "Future Rankings", I think there is a way for us to get out of this mess, and fast. Check out my exit strategy after the jump.
I made a post similar to this a few months ago (in which I predicted Dampier would be traded to us, although under different cirumstances - http://www.rufusonfire.com/2010/6/27/1539919/2011-free-agency-and-the-charlotte - ). I thought about making this post a few weeks ago, , but decided not to until I had some more solid evidence. Half of ROF was on the side of rebuilding, while the other half was on the side of trying to build on what we have to get into the playoffs again. I was leaning more towards the latter, and initially, this post was about making a case for both sides because I did see both viewpoints. However, this post won't even mention anything about holding on to what we have or trying to build on anything because it's just not worth it. Although I still hope this team can turn it around and make a run (for the sake of being a fan), I am now looking at the Bobcats the same way as I view the Panthers now, and that's as a team that can make a true run at the number 1 pick in the NBA draft. This month alone, the Bobcats have lost to the 76'ers by 18, the Celtics by 31, the Grizzlies by 33, and the Wizards by 33. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!! I hate John Hollinger and his idiotic rankings, but there has been one thing I have always agreed with him on, and that is that the win/loss point differential is the biggest indicator of how a good a team is. The Bobcats, though still 9-18 and better than some teams on paper, are in my eyes officially the worst team in the league.
A few months ago, I posted a thread about how easy it could be for the Bobcats to rebuild (all you need is patience)and now is the time to take advantage. However, I've revised my thinking about what we should do with the roster and the moves we need to make. I feel like if we follow these simple steps, we'll be back to mediocre in no time, because I don't even think we are mediocre yet, we're below it.
1. The first step that we absolutely must take is the dismissal of Larry Brown. I don't care if he re-signs, is fired, or just passes away in his sleep (I'm just playing!!!!), but he needs to go. Watching last night's game let me know that our players just aren't happy anymore. I didn't see ANY energy, effort, or will from anybody on the floor. It was quite possibly the worst performance I've ever seen a professional team put on in my lifetime. And when the team looks sloppy like that, the first man that has to take the blame is the coach. LB's old school ways are just too, well, old. It's almost like watching the Panthers offense. A typical four down possession goes like this for the Panthers.......Run the ball on 1st, lose 2 yards, pass the ball on second, incomplete pass, run a draw play on 3rd and 12, punt. The Bobcats offense has become predicatable in the same way and I think it can be highlighted entirely by a play I seen against the Hawks where Josh Smith perfectly predicted D.J.'s oh so predicatable cross court pass as soon as he crossed half court, which lead to an easy fast break dunk by Smith. We are also very predicatable on defense with teams drawing players away from the rim to chase the ball, only to sneak a direct pass to a player less than 2 feet from the basket for easy lay ups. I don't know how these players end up open so consistently, but it's happening. We need some new blood in Charlotte, and I honestly don't think M.J. has the gaul to fire Larry and do the right thing for the team because of the Carolina connection. Nevertheless, Larry's desire to play McGuire over people who can actually play and his inability to motivate players is leading to the franchise's downfall.
2. Re-assess the roster and by that I mean rosterbate, and by that I mean everybody on the roster. I don't think there are any true untouchables on our team, but I feel like it goes in this order...... Tyrus Thomas, Gerald Wallace, D.J. Augustin, Derek Brown, Gerald Henderson. I left out Boris and Jackson because I think we should move them for whatever now. An expiring contract for either is more than good enough for me. Crash is Crash, and I think he'll be the same player once he returns from injury but we should get a good value for him now while we can instead of overrating our own talent and holding on to mediocrity, like I feel we've already let go on enough. As for D.J., his defense is honestly making me lose faith in him as a starting PG in the NBA. His offense and ball handling are more than adequate for the job he's asked to do, but his defense has become such an issue, that it may not matter. Anyone who let's Kirk Hinrich dominate them is a liability. We should drop the nuke on the team, cut all loyalties, and get it started now. Here are a few trades that I think will be beneficial towards a long term building of a championship team.......
A. Trade Gerald Wallace and Desagana Diop (16.33) for Ronny Turiaf, Shawne Williams and Eddy Curry (16.23)
If the Nets end up with Carmelo Anthony, it will probably be because he agreed to sign an extension, killing NY's chances of landing him as a free agent next year. I think this would open the door for a trade of G. Force to NY to be reunited with Felton. As an NBA analyst noted the other day, having Gerald Wallace as opposed to Carmelo as your starting SF in NY wouldn't make as much a difference as the Knicks already have a lot on offense and don't need the ballhog Anthony there to become a black hole in the offense. They could use Diop to replace Turiaf and take on his contract as the cap wouldn't be as precious to them anymore and could probably become a true contender in the East. I honestly think including Diop in a trade with Crash is our only way of getting rid of him and his contract. No draft picks needed.
B. Trade Stephen Jackson and Boris Diaw (17.45) to Utah for Andrei Kirilenko (17.82) and a 1st Round pick
I think this trade makes sense because Utah is a borderline contender who apparently like Diaw (as evidenced by the failed N.J. trade earlier this year that would have landed them Boris and us Devin Harris) and have a huge hole at the SG (with only Raja Bell truly manning the spot). I also don't think they would mind giving us a 1st rounder either since it would likely be near the end of the first round. The only thing here that I think would really hold up this trade is them not seeing any value in Jackson. He's fallen off, but he's still valuable.
In the end, our roster would look something like this.........
PG, D.J. Augustin, Shaun Livingston, Sherron Collins
SG, Dominic McGuire, Gerald Henderson, Matt Carroll
SF, Andrei Kirilenko, Derrick Brown, Shawne Williams
PF, Tyrus Thomas, Eduardo Najera
C, Nazr Mohammed, Ronny Turiaf, Kwame Brown, Eddy Curry
Extreme suckitude right? Yes, indeed, I know. But the important thing would be that
1) We would still have our building blocks for the future (D.J., Tyrus, Hendo, UPS)
2) Larry wouldn't dare stick around to coach this team
3)They would suck enough to net us a top pick in the draft
4)Only about 27 million in cap room for next year would be used
5) We would probably return to being known as one of those hardworking underdog teams that always overachieved, those are the Cats we fell in love with right? So what say you ROF. To rebuild, or not to rebuild? I'm prepared to face a dreadful season with Dominic as our starting SG because that's what I'm already doing anyway.

I really really really like your plan
even more if we could manage to net Gallinari but beggars can’t be choosers.
I'd love to have Danillo here,
I think he’s the real deal. D’Antoni is in love with him though.

Yea but Crash could be a real difference maker for that team
Maybe it’s something we explore if they miss out on Melo officially, but I’d still do the above trade if they won’t bite.

It'll be interesting to see what the Knicks
do should the Carmelo to N.J. trade end up happening. Tony Parker has signed his extension already, so they can’t look forward to him next year either. I think they’ll give us that deal for Crash, and may even be willing to still flip Anthony Randolph for a draft pick to give us. Or, they may just say F it and start the wait for CP3. Either way, only time will tell.

Why would D'Antonio want anybody who knows how to play defense?

He took Felton

What poor, confused soul
voted for the team turning it around this year?
by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 21, 2010 1:36 PM EST reply actions
That would be me, but "turning the season around" I mean in a relative sense
The sky is not falling, and with some motivation this team can play better. The Bobcats were never as good as most of us hoped they would be, but they aren’t as bad as they are currently playing either. I never believed they were more than a fringe playoff contender, and I’m only stating that I still believe they have the ability to be mediocre, which is enough to compete for the 8th playoff spot (and also enough to keep them out of the high lottery).
Desperation is weakness, and I’d be concerned forcing an immediate rebuilding plan now would only tear the existing team down without building anything for the future. That Jax has dropped off from last season should not be a surprise, and the Bobcats without Wallace were never a good team. Losing to anyone shouldn’t be a surprise right now so this isn’t the time to overreact either. No major decisions regarding trades should be based on their recent futuility.
The real concern with the Bobcats is not the losing but the lousy effort and lack of enthusiasm. An extended losing streak could get really ugly in a hurry, and Jax is already showing signs of a coming meltdown. One significant move needs to be made now. The players (and the coach himself) have stopped believing in the coach and his strategy. So fire LB, and replace him with an interrim coach with a mandate to play the best players reasonable minutes.
Then wait on other teams to come calling. Don’t tear the team down because they are losing, but by all means don’t hold onto mediocre vets if somebody else wants them. It’s already no secret that nobody on this team is untouchable, but don’t be too eager to dump anyone. In the off-season I was in support of trading Jax, Diaw, Diop, Najera or Carroll for just about anyone with a shorter, cheaper contract. That wasn’t popular at the time, but it would have been forward thinking and selling high (in the case of Jax and Diaw). It should still be the plan if the FO can pull it off, but now the Bobcats will be selling low.
Thomas, Wallace and the guys on rookie contracts are the players to hold onto, and dumping them would be panic. Thomas needs to be kept because he likely will have more value when he’s playing more minutes, and he’s the only good frontcourt player on the team. Crash is a fan favorite and the team’s best player. Fans need something to root for even if the team’s not winning, and Crash is still that guy. He would not be easily replaced. Both need to stay unless another team offers a great deal that makes the team better both now and in the future.
Personally,
I’m all in favor of keeping crash. And I agree desperation is week. However, like I say, 30 point blowouts will do that to a man. But yeah, first thing is first. Larry needs to go.

Gerald Wallace needs to stay on this team
I’ve been saying this for the past year or so, since last season, and during the off season , and during this season.
KEEP Gerald Wallace a Bobcat. As far as I’m concerned, do whatever you wish with everyone else.

I'm willing to deal Crash, but I'd prefer he stay, and I KNOW that MJ needs him here...
Crash is the face of this team. Nobody is untouchable, but I’m sure they’d want a huge return for Gerald.
Come on!
Im tired of Gerald falling down every time he does anything! If falling down were a stat Gerald would average a triple double! Im so sick of seeing him going in for a lay up and looking for a foul and falling down…then after its not called laying on the floor while his man is laying the ball up. You can’t rebuild around a soon to be 30 year old who’s career has peaked! (last year) Too bad we didn’t trade him while he was at his high, as far as im concerned.
His high was the day he was selected to the All-Star team
I guess you wanted him traded that day.

As long as it takes
They showed last night against OKC that they have the talent to hang with a good team even without Wallace. The more serious problem with the Bobcats is mental. For that reason, I’d change coaches now and trade underachieving veteran players if anybody wanted them. I just doubt the team would improve by trading Wallace or Thomas, but I didn’t write that they’re untouchable either.
Actually...
Gerald wasn’t playing the last two times we got beat by 30, only the Boston game. He missed Memphis and Washington.

Let's trade Tyrus Thomas back to the Bulls and get our 1st round pick back
I’m only kidding but that’s the type of trade the Bobcats would do, just to make us look like idiots one more time.

Agreed
I think in that Knicks deal we get a 1st with it or Randolph who we can trade for a mid to lower 1st along with our own which looks to be pretty good come on Stern work your voodoo lottery magic to help one of the greatest players of all-time.
Only person on our team i want to keep is Tyrus.
"Hard Work Beats Talent When Talent Fails To Work Hard" - Kevin Durant
Both are fine players but i would be more then willing to part with either of them then i would Tyrus. Honestly D.J. is easily replaceable PG is the most populated position at the moment of talent. New batch of All Stars are coming out in the draft every year. As far as Wallace he is a solid player but his style can lead to injury’s and inconsistency. Tyrus can play defense and rebound too. We don’t need two players with the same skill set. Tryus is young can rebound block shots and shoots a high percentage from the charity stripe. Ill take that in a big anyday. In short i like them yes but Tyrus is a better piece to build around

I don't think that's a question anymore CBob.
I think we’re well past that and now into the realm of “What is the best way to get the rebuild done?”

Except instead of using Gerald
To escape Diop, you would rather secure another first rounder in the trade right? We could probably get it from New York as well, but Idk.
by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 21, 2010 7:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
If we get stuck holding the Diop contract there is one way to look for an upside.
He’ll come off the books just when our draft picks will be showing themselves to be valuable to our future, or washouts. We’ll have the money to sign the ones we want and dump the ones we don’t at very low cost. If we keep bringing in veterans, we’ll keep all our money tied up in veteran-sized paychecks and NEVER get out from under the cap – especially if the owners ram home a hard cap in the CBA next summer. (Wow, that last sentence sounds raunchy no matter how I look at it.)

Andris Biedrins, Dan Gadzuric (7.2 expiring) and a 1st round pick for Wallace and Diop
"There is nothing like a wise phrase or quote to help convince others that your decision makes sense." - Anon
"If you're ever in a fair fight, then your tactics suck." ಠ_ಠ
I'd certainly consider that....
but only if I have another deal ready to obtain a quality starting SG (or ideally SG and PG). While Biedrens is no star, he would be a welcome starter at the 5. But in moving Crash we would slide Jax to the 3 (a good move IMO) and need a really good SG with a deadly jump shot.
Maybe I am the only one here thinking this....
I love Tyrus Thomas and he has all the potential in the world and its exciting to see him play..but he just looks so out of control all the time when he plays and tries to make a post move. I honestly cringe when I see him with the ball in the post because I can already see his arms flailing everywhere. Now granted he is only 24…but he has been in the NBA for 4 years now and hasnt learned a good post move yet? He has a good jump shot it seems but hes not a SF or SG…he is a PF. He needs to have developed some sort of post move by now and I honestly do not see him learning one because he is mostly always out of control. I dont think we should think of Tyrus as untouchable because there are possibly better prospects out there but we dont want to see because we want to believe we have something good to look forward to within the Bobcats. There are players that can be had and have the potential to be better than Thomas and one of them has an incredibly low stock because he just has no playing time (A. Randolph). One of them is a diva that seems to have a big ego and clashes with coaches (D. Cousins) but would he behave the same and try to have an ego with the greatest player to play the game AKA biggest ego in the game looking over his shoulder? There are more that I do not know much about…Serge Ibaka, Thaddeus Young. But none of this matters if LB is still here because none of them will play ahead of the MVP Dominic McGuire
No, I totally agree.
That’s why I said no player on our team is untouchable, it just goes in the order if we were talking about players that would be decent building blocks. But like you say, none of that matters as long as Larry is here. I’m actually a fan of Thaddeus, Anthony Randolph, and Demarcus Cousins, so I hear ya.

It appears we just may see be a part of that Denver to N.J. deal.......Or something else.............
Nets point guard Devin Harris was set to become a member of the Bobcats in September, but a four-team trade fell apart. The Nets are once again trying to land Carmelo Anthony from the Nuggets and Harris might be one of the players traded out of New Jersey.
The Nuggets don’t want Harris, but the Bobcats may still have interest, especially since head coach Larry Brown is not thrilled with any of his point guards, including D.J. Augustin.
According to the New York Daily News an Eastern Conference general manager speculated that Brown would renew talks with the Nets regarding Harris.
All the recent trade rumors don’t seem to bother Harris, like they did in September.
“Been there, done that,” Harris said. “You go through a little bit of emotions, thinking how you want to be a part of something and obviously with a new regime and a new coaching staff, you’re moving out right away. But you get over it.”
by Charlotte Bobcat on Dec 22, 2010 12:05 PM EST reply actions
This was added a short time later
UPDATE: Al Iannazzone of the Bergen Record reported that Nets coach Avery Johnson talked with “certain players” about their futures on Tuesday before New Jersey’s game against the Grizzlies — one of those being Harris.
While this isn’t incredibly specific, it would seem to fuel speculation that Harris could be on the move.
