Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

Welcome to this season's New Jersey Nets!

Will the last one out of the Cable Box please turn out the lights?

I really wanted to see this game. My favorite team against the team I grew up watching and adoring. But I had a very rough night with little sleep (less than 2 hrs) Friday and I crashed badly at around 6 pm. When my wife finally managed to rouse me to take my meds, we were midway through the 3rd quarter. Sadly, I awoke well before the Bobcats did. I'll say one thing before the jump, after which I'm gonna get into some stuff.

I hate, hate, hate, the Boston Celtics now. The score tonight was low but the Cats were hanging in tough until roughly the midpoint of the 4th. After that, Boston ripped us apart and treated us like we were something that they stepped in. There was no cause or reason for them to run up the score the way they did. They had a comfortable lead when they hit the mid 70's, the game was well in hand. The Bobcats were demoralized and the only part of the crowd still in the game were the people wearing green jerseys. Running the lead up over 30 points at the end was just a classless and garbage move. I won't forget that. I now have 2 favorite teams. The Bobcats and whoever is playing Boston. I'll even root for (gulp) the Lakers! (People get shot for saying things like that in the joints I used to gig and hang out in.)

Star-divide

The post-game press conference spoke volumes and at times Larry looked on the verge of tears.

He specifically peed all over Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson. Oh, not by name. He just said that he was going to stop using players more concerned about being an All-Star or wanting to be an All-Star than they are about winning. Who else could he have meant? He may have meant Tyrus Thomas, but he hasn't exactly "used" Tyrusaurus lately, has he? Then he said that the only person on the team that was playing right was Boris Diaw. Before you start scratching your heads over that comment, I think I know what he meant. Diaw doesn't crave the highlight reel. He's a pass first (even when wide open for an easy layup) player that (apparently) cares little about his own statline. That makes alone earns him a spot on the "Larry Brown Bestest Players" All-Star Squad as a starter.

Twice LB mentioned that Jordan wants to meet with him on Monday. Each time Brown mentioned it, he got visibly rattled and nervous, following it up by saying that the entire problem with the team was his (LB's) fault. He said that when Jordan talks with him, they are both on the same page about that as well as what needs to change regarding the attitudes of the players. We've all heard enough of Brown's cryptic way of speaking to the press over the years to be able to read between the lines. Larry fully expects to get the axe at the Monday meeting. I've been saying since the first 2 games of the season that this was coming and more than a few people have been quick to point out the many reasons it couldn't possibly happen. I don't know whether I should hope they're right or hope that I'm right. SOMETHING must be done - and it's very likely too late to salvage this season even if Brown is replaced or some other cleansing by blood occurs through trades etc.

The one thing that could always be said in favor of the Bobcats - even when they were at their very worst in the first couple of seasons - was that they never gave up. From their first night on the court, the Charlotte Bobcats= HEART. Not anymore. As has been pointed out in the Gameday Thread, we began last season against the Celtics with a ghastly loss and scored only 59 points. Tonight we at least managed to cross the 60-point threshold, although the margin of loss was almost identical. My point? The first blowout was before we got Jax. We had him tonight.

Does anyone really still believe the problem with this team is the loss of Raymond Felton and Tyson Chandler?

We have made a complete reversalback to what we were before we grew into a playoff team. Even worse, we've achieved this 180 degree descent almost 25 games later in the season and we still have the man that many, including myself, believe was the catalyst that ignited this team last season. We have the same coach too, at least THIS weekend.

I clearly recall last winter that everyone was saying the record of the New Jersey Nets was inexplicable. They were so much better on paper than the L & Ws would ever indicate. They weren't destined for greatness with their roster, but should have at least been in shouting distance of a .500 record. Do I need to point out that if I removed the Nets name out of that description many of you would think I was talking about our Bobcats this season?

What I've seen the past 2 Bobcats games is something I've seen before but thankfully never experienced as a player myself. The Cats are listless, lethargic, and disconnected with one another and the game itself. Why?

1. Pro Athletes are no different than anyone else. If they look around and see their coworkers aren't trying the first thought they have is, "well if they don't give a crap, why should I?"

2. Right after that thought comes The Decision. No, not THAT decision. I'm talking about the decision to make sure that when management decides to start swinging the axe you want to have your own butt covered. From that point forward you make sure your own performance is solid enough that you either keep your job or you make bloody well sure that you look attractive to the next companies you apply to should your plan not work.

3. No matter how much of a "pro" you are in a competitive situation, there is a point where the losses mount up to a tipping point where you approach each new challenge with a defeatist, "we're just gonna lose anyway" depression before things even start. It's a different number of losses for each player, but I think it's pretty safe to say that every one of the guys has passed that point by now. So is their coach, who as much as said so in the press conference. BTW, the team website is currently streaming the entire conference and it's linked on Facebook if you missed it after the game.

4. It's hard to be motivated when your own coach tells the media and fans that he himself is giving up and is just out of ideas. Even worse, he's also telling the world that his team is filled with selfish Prima Donnas that care about nothing but themselves. Now THERE'S a confidence builder.

It happened last season with the Nets. Eventually the infighting and finger pointing  got to the point that even the most devout fans were sick, disgusted, and tired to death of hearing about it. Again, all you need to do is pick up a newspaper or log in to one online to see that all of that has begun in earnest on Trade Street already. The past 7 days of Bobcats press releases, interviews, and oped pieces have contained little else. There is a little seen masterpiece of a movie called "Greedy" in which the late-great master of sarchasm Phil Hartman finds out he's just lost millions and the person giving him the news says, "I know this comes as a shock." His response, slightly paraphrased, is to say, "No, crapping a sailboat - that's a shock. This is an effing catastrophe!" I couldn't have said it better Phil.

Michael Jordan can yell and scream all he wants but it won't change the fact that nothing will change without some action. He has no choice but to make some unpopular, hard, and downright ugly decisions before things can even begin to improve and it's much likely to get even worse before it gets better no matter which way he handles it. I think he's aware of it and Monday is going be a very busy and dark day for anyone summoned to stand in front of the Big Boss. The fecal evacuate is about to hit the industrial-sized oscillating air redistribution equipment.

Fellow fans? We're not going to be too thrilled with the news coming out of Bobcats HQ either. Let us pray.

Not sure I interpreted LB's comments the same as you

First of all, I sit not too far behind MJ and he was visibly teed off. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in the postgame speech. However, I don’t think he’s firing LB. My interpretation was that MJ and LB had talked and MJ wanted to address the team on Monday. Tonight’s showing was so pathetic and he was so pissed, that MJ decided to address them after the game.

I fully expect some chips to start falling but I don’t believe LB will be the first to go. Just my interpretation of the postgame interview anyway, not to say I’m accurate of course. :)

And that's fine.

But as I recall, Larry mentioned in the press conference that Jordan reminded him about the Monday meeting after the game and both time he spoke of it he said that Jordan, “wants to meet with me.” I don’t recall him mentioning the rest of the team or saying, “meet with us.”

Any time someone tries to read between the lines there is some subjectivity involved. But look at any sport, any team, in any country. When a team is not performing to expectations, which head is usually the first to roll?

I just watched the interview

MJ told LB he wanted to talk to the the team on Monday. After tonight’s beatdown, he told LB that he wanted to talk to them tonight and not wait until Monday.

I just relistened myself.

I stand corrected (or sit corrected for the literalists out there). I misunderstood LB’s comments regarding the Monday meeting completely. Primoz and drapht, thanks for pointing it out and if anyone else caught the mistake I apologize for the misinformation. Note to self – typing it live while the conference is ongoing isn’t the best way to maintain accuracy.

True that.

Do you think they’ll come up to catch us or we’ll go on down to meet them? The Pistons and Wolves don’t worry me. But the West Coast teams? Some of them (in particuarly the 2 you mentioned) are the teams likliest to call US looking to make deals.

i think the Wolves and Clips have something "special" brewing for their team

they have a solid group of guys that are worth watching (Beasley-Love, Gordon-GRIFFIN) and they can still definitely turn it around once all of their players are back from injuries. so i don’t think these teams will make a BIG trade with us or with other teams in this regard. they jsut have to find ways on finishing games.

i wouldn’t mind dealing with the Pistons. We share the same exact problems (questionable rotation, a bunch of listless INDIVIDUAL players, terrible coach, and HOF Player-turned-GM). but i couldn’t think of any deal that will suit both teams. Stuckey and Prince for Derrick Brown and Diaw? Lol

I have a different take...

I think this “meeting” Monday will have a lot to do with the fact that Wednesday is December 15th. What is December 15th? Free agents who signed over the Summer are eligible to be traded. For some reason, I just don’t see Larry Brown being fired. I believe this will be a discussion centered primarily around preparing for any trade offers that may be thrown the Bobcats way or coming up with some ideas about offers they could throw to other teams. Do you make one big trade or a handful of smaller trades? Is it time to start rebuilding and look towards 3-5 years in the future or do you try to improve the team and make a second run to the playoffs? Or, do you keep things as-is and just see what happens? I really have no idea, so I’ll resort to Mr. Lail’s trademarked saying…“wait for it”.

On a different note, I was at the game and it was embarrassing. I was surrounded by Celtics fans and throughout most of the game, they were louder than the ’Cats fans. It was especially bad during the last 6-8 minutes of the game. Green outnumbered orange by a wide margin. Whole sections of Celtics fans drowned out any kind of noise or cheers from the Bobcats fans. Feeling like a minority in the stands coupled with the awful play on the floor actually made me feel embarrased to be a Bobcats fan.

The problem with that is...

Kwame, Livingston, McGuire, Collins, Najera, Carroll, and Tyrus are the only guys that are going to available to be moved.
Any of those names jump out as trade bait?

sigh…

Didn’t think so
I threw Tyrus in there just because…they could move him if they wanted to.

This "Meeting"

I think this meeting was just an error in transcribing. He actually meant they were going to the Butcher’s Shop for a “Meating.” Jordan is tired of ham on Christmas dinner and he wants Larry’s experience and advice on what to get for the holiday meals since he will not be eating non-kosher this year.

I think you have been watching the Panthers too much

The Bobcats are playing poorly, but they are not in a Panther type situation. They are still 1 1/2 games from the 8th seed and have almost 60 games left to play. The Bobcats also have a lot more talent than last year’s Nets.

The only way that LB goes is that if MJ has decided to rebuild and trade talented veterans for draft picks and young players with potential. LB wouldn’t want to stick around in this scenario and it would be a mutual parting of ways.

Changes have to be made with an 8-15 record, but if we let LB sail it is is sure sign this season is over. No other coach is going to come in and do any better in the short term.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Dec 12, 2010 9:53 AM EST reply actions

These Bobcats are being blown out with far more frequency than the Panthers were when they were healthy.

The Bobcats were also supposed to be playoff contenders, and spent up to the luxury line to do so. The Panthers cut every one of their expensive vets to save money, and have the lowest player payroll in the league..

For the record:

I’ve not watched a football game this season, Panthers or otherwise. I lost my interest in regular season games a couple of years ago and usually start watching as the playoffs begin. I knew the Panthers were stinking up the stadiums this year, but little more than that. Also, I’m more of a Tampa Bay fan than I am a fan of the Panthers.
I mostly watch basketball and soccer now, unless there’s a really good dodgeball tourney on the Ocho.

I'm not sure if this is a sign LB will be fired or that a trade is coming

I do think LB is still letting it be known that he doesn’t want to coach this team. Would I fire LB, yes. He’s telling us the team isn’t responding to him, he says the team not performing is his fault, why is he still here? It seems like LB hasnt officially quit on Mike because they have the UNC ties, and it also seems that’s the only reason Mike still hasnt fired LB. Will it happen Monday, I don’t know.
What I do know is the loss to Boston shouldn’t be looked into too much. We didn’t have probably our best player in Tyrus Thomas (which is a big part of the problems we’ve had as a team, not playing him enough), Boston is the best team in the league right now, and two of our key players (DJ and Wallace) struggled. We have played with the wrong lineups since day one, Tyrus should start and be developing as he plays, we’ve gone with LB’s guy Boris and we’ve overlooked his mediocrity and below par statistics all because LB is so in love with his play. Wallace has been used as some sort of super star scorer when the reality is, he’s a very good all around player, but in a half court offense he’s average. We’ve given up open three pointers and been one of the worst in the league at it since last season yet we still haven’t adjusted to this major defect we have because LB doesn’t value them! Every problem with this team I’ve mentioned is easilly correctable, but since it hasn’t been, it falls on Larry’s shoulders.
One other thing, I’ve had a feeling that LB wants to be fired based off the way he’s been coaching and the things he’s said and that would be easier for him than to quit on Mike. I’ve read from New York Knicks fans that they had the same opinion when he was their coach. I don’t think the Bobcats quit on LB, I think LB quit on the team. You cannot expect me to believe NBA players would not give it 100% when the owner of the team is Michael Jordan as competitive as he is! This man sits on the sidelines with the players for Pete’s sake, who doesn’t do their best with the best right there watching. IMO LB has failed this team.

Go back over the games we've won

5 out of the 8 games, Tyrus was the best player on the floor, or he was the player that made the plays to get us the wins. He won us the game vs New Jersey in overtime, he got 16 points in 15 minutes of play vs Denver and he was involved in almost every play down the stretch that got us the lead that we almost lost without him. He got 22 points in 29 minutes vs Phoenix, he made big plays against Minnesota and shut Love down after he dropped 30 and 30 on Stoudemire, Tyrus had 20-10 and 4 blocks, how silly of me to think he’s a very good player. Against Toronto who was the player that came through in the clutch making big shots and draining the free thorws giving us the lead, oh yeah, Tyrus had 14 points with 5 blocks in 21 minutes of play, imagine if he played 38 minutes like Boris who only had 10 points? What is our record in the three games he’s missed? You may not think he’s the best player, but to laugh him off like it’s ridiculous to even consider is laughable in itself.

I think Tyrus can actually be a top 5 PF in the league

and be considered amongst the Duncans, Garnetts, Boozers, and Blake Griffins of the league. He just needs more consistent playing time AND he needs to do what the coaches ask of him. I’m not really great and looking at a game and saying “so and so was out of position constantly”, but with Tyrus, it’s easy to tell. He just needs to develop his low post scoring and stop taking as many jumpers as he has (though he’s been somewhat successful at it) and become a true PF. I still have hope for him as I don’t think he’s anywhere near his limit yet.

Couldn't agree more

It’s not like the Celtics left their starters in until the very end anyway. As a coach with a big lead, the only thing you can do is put your worst 5 players on the floor, which Boston did. You can’t ask them not to try or you threaten the integrity of the game itself.
