Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Charlotte Bobcats vs. Boston Celtics preview -- Game 23; Is Larry Brown checked out?

The Big Picture: Even Larry Brown's biggest public cheerleader is acknowledging that Brown might be checked out, which is a shame, because LB is a basketball lifer and it's sad to see someone lose faith in something he loves. However, I hope Rick Bonnell's illogical alarms don't rule the day. Paraphrased:

1 -- If Brown leaves, we might get a worse coach. Totally true. We might also get a better one. There's evidence that Michael Jordan prefers hiring buddies/retreads, but it's hardly a foregone conclusion that we won't get a better coach than this version of Larry Brown.

2 -- Minutes are not a birthright. Youngsters have to earn them. Everyone agrees with this. Nikoloz Tskitishvili sucked and shouldn't have played as much as he did. However, the Bobcats under Larry Brown have been extreme in their practice of withholding playing time from young players. As I've noted before, in 2009, the only first round draft picks to play fewer NBA minutes than Gerald Henderson were Earl Clark (Phoenix was loaded with big men), Byron Mullens (pick #24, spent most of season in D-League), Ricky Rubio, Victor Claver, Christian Eyenga, and Blake Griffin, none of whom played a single minute, for various reasons.

Furthermore, Tyler Hansbrough is a bad comparison to the Bobcats' situation. He has fallen out of the rotation because Josh McRoberts is playing very well at the moment. The Bobcats have one guy playing that well: Tyrus Thomas, and he doesn't play more than 20 minutes per game. Also, Hansbrough has a history of vertigo issues and sprained his ankle badly enough to miss games earlier this year, and Derrick Brown is the picture of health. I think they're different. And, for what it's worth, the Pacers are actually over .500, so maybe it's best for them to put off using game time to discover what their young players can do.

Enough about that unpleasantness for now, though. Tonight, the Cats play the Boston Celtics. On Thursday, the Celtics beat the 76ers on a last-second alley-oop layup by Kevin Garnett, and they're firing on all cylinders, having won nine straight. With Rajon Rondo's emergence as everything Derrick Rose was supposed to be, the Celtics' championship window has been widened, and as long as Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Garnett are still good -- if not All Star -- players, they'll be Eastern Conference contenders.

Musical Interlude: New Found Glory -- "Dressed to Kill"

Key to Victory: D.J. Augustin will be challenged with containing Rondo, a monumental task. It seems most teams try to sag off and dare him to shoot. However, that also allows him to get up to speed off the dribble before his defender engages him. I'd love to see D.J. get up in his face and dare him to dribble around and past. D.J.'s probably not quick enough to make it a permanent strategy, but if he surprises Rondo with it, it could be effective.

I cant find anything except for people on Twitter

Not even a rumor in ESPN’s rumor stuff.

However, if it’s true, this is how I think it would happen:

Nuggets GM: “So Mike, you still on board for this Melo to the Nets deal?”

Jordan: “F*** THAT. I’M GETTING MELO, B****. YOU? YOU?!? YOU GET DIOP, MATT CARROLL AND NAJERA.”

Nuggets GM: “Bu-”

Jordan: “DEAL’S DONE. i JUST TOLD ESPN. ADIOS SUCKA.”

i just found this over at bobcatsplanet

“I didn’t want to bury this on the ongoing trade thread because I thought it was big news: On the ESPN scroll, per Chris Sheridan, Michael Jordan is leading active trade talks with Denver to bring Carmelo Anthony to the Bobcats. Thoughts?”

Re: Rick's "Minutes are not a birthright" junk

That’s true, but it effectively disproves his argument for benching Derrick Brown. Derrick Brown worked his ass off over the summer; it wasn’t any secret. He wasn’t training to get his glutes super rock-hard so the bench wouldn’t give him sores anymore. He put in work to play in the NBA. Dominic McGuire isn’t sitting on his haunches either, but he basically got a contract and lots of minutes based on some whim LB had and LB’s determination to make him the annual ‘Larry Brown pet player.’

As David noted, we’re not playing our young players nor developing them when we should be, which is right now.

No blog for me tonight, guys...

I’ll be at my first game of the season tonight. Kind of excited but also kind of blah. We’ll see how it goes.

I've been told (and no I won't elaborate beyond this) that Bonnell was encouraged to write some of this piece.

It’s a test balloon to see how the fans react to the idea of the Bobcats “next coaching decision.”
Something is in the wind and it’s been in the wind since I first started talking about a coaching change back around game 10 of the young season. I don’t know the hows or whens, in fact I was also told that it was going to happen after we lost 3 of 4 games in a one week stretch, so obviously I don’t always have all the correct facts. Contrary to what some (mostly at another site) believed, I wasn’t BSing this past summer either. I just got overexcited and blurted some things I was told that I shouldn’t have. Everyone caught the fever and that whole thing was at least 80% my fault.

So please – don’t take this as gospel. It may happen tomorrow morning, after the holidays, or not at all. But 2 of the 3 folks I know are telling me this will be over before the holidays unless something dramatic changes the team fortunes in another way. As to the ‘Melo thing mentioned at the top of the thread… as far as I know, Higgins has been calling Denver periodically just to let them know that under the right circumstances we’d be very interested in a deal. I’ve not thought much of it because at least a dozen other GMs are doing the exact same thing and NJ is calling them more than the others added together. If something IS in the wind that will bring ‘Melo to Charlotte I can guarantee you that little will be said about it until a press conference is called unexpectedly by one or both clubs. They don’t want another big deal trade getting blown up because of premature medialation. Also, any Carmelo Anthony deal that brings him to our club is going to hurt us in other ways. We not only would have to make the money work, we’d have to match the talent up in a way that appeals to Denver. They aren’t in nearly enough chaos to let us toss Diop on the pile just to make the money work for example. We would have to say goodbye to at least one or more players that are loved enough that they have their own homer fan club devotees. Also, don’t expect ‘Melo to plan to stay with this club for long without some well-known wishes of his being fulfilled and we simply don’t have the money or space to accomodate those demands. He’d likely be a 60-game rental and not enough to fix what’s ailing our team. What I’m saying is, don’t get excited about any impending deal rumors and don’t get excited about any actual deal until you know what we’ll have to give away in the process. I unintentionally lit a bonfire this summer. I’m trying to make some small amends for that by preventing the ignition of another one in December.

Please don’t email me asking for inside dirt “just between us and I promise I won’t tell anyone” either. Not only is it unfair to everyone else, it would potentially cause far more problems and not result in any positives at all. It isn’t that I care about any further hits to my “creds,” it’s that I don’t want to inflate people’s hopes again. There is no quick-fix solution that will magically transform our team into contenders. It’s going to take work, time, and several steps that could take at least 2-3 seasons to implement. It’s way past time to grab for short-term gratification at the expense of long-term “actual” success. If we’ve learned nothing else from the first 5 years of the Bobcats existence, hopefully we’ve all learned the hard way the folly of pursuing that course. In my opinion, putting Anthony in a Bobcats uniform at this point would just be a crowning example of repeating the mistakes of the past.

Thanks in advance for understanding guys.

And I knew that unccat, I really did.

But there are roughly a half-dozen people here that email me the moment anyone mentions the words “trade,” “’Melo,” or “CP3” in any of their various forms. It always leaves me between a rock and a hard place. I’d love to share the information I get, but at least 7 out of every 10 deals break down before I ever hear about them and of those I do, they might make it as far as the big rumor sites, but often don’t actually happen. At best, the inside news sent my way helps me understand the direction management is aiming to go in, whether it succeeds or fails. The summer fiasco left me knowing that the Bobcats tried their damndest to make multiple big and potentially franchise-changing deals but couldn’t pull them off. My big mistake was dragging everyone else along for that ride.

i understand that, that whole summer thing was a big fiasco.

your little nuggets of info (no carmelo pun intended) are exciting but never expected.

Not down with the idea of a rental...not even for someone of Melo's caliber

My biggest concern when we acquired Thomas last season was, “Great…but what happens when his contract expires?” I’m very happy that he’s still around (playing time issue notwithstanding), but I really hope we don’t make another “let’s get a little better for the time being” trade, only to throw our future status in further turmoil and uncertainty.

Regardless of who we may or may not have to give up for this or any other potential/hypothetical/rosterbatory deal, unless * insert All-Star with expiring contract HERE * makes some sort of ironclad commitment to stick around beyond this season, it’s a solid “NO DEAL” in my book.

So, basically…

It’s way past time to grab for short-term gratification at the expense of long-term "actual" success.

Rebuilding

But the quick way to get rid of some of our long term debt is to deal for big expirings (Melo, VC) and then let them walk. It could fast track the rebuilding phase from a financial standpoint.

Hm, I suppose you're right

I just don’t know how I feel about bringing Melo over for just the season. It’ll be just another short term quick fix; we’ll play good, win some games, make it to the playoffs, and then perhaps exit as we did last year….or not…who knows. I guess that’s the gamble and the price you pay to try and keep the fans (or rather the bandwagon fans) happy.

To Ourday's point...

Seems funny that espn is reporting this on the crawl, yet you can’t find it anywhere else at the moment. I"d think Realgm, Hoopshype, Hoopsworld would be all over this, but there’s nothing. Of course I got excited, but I should learn to expect nothing.

exactly!

I haven’t heard a thing (or as they say where I grew up, “there’s bupkis on the fence”) beyond Higgins making his “checking in to let you know we’re still here if you wanna talk” calls.

I just woke up from a nap in a LOT of pain and it’s the middle of the 4th. The presence of Jordan at the game is somehow… ominous based on the look on his face, isn’t it? If I had a woman that looked like THAT next to me I wouldn’t be in such a dark mood. lol

Should be noted that Boston will be short handed at Center tonight

Kendrick Perkins is out for several months, Jermaine O’Neal is out for sore knees or something, and it was recently reported that Shaq will miss the game too, as he’s been day-to-day as well.

Can we take advantage of this?

by Roger, Roger on Dec 11, 2010 5:03 PM EST reply actions

Nope

The upside is they won’t have a guy that can abuse Nazr like Howard/Hibbert/etc./etc. have done

It would be awesome b/c it would let us go with our ideal line-up the whole game…but I’m under the impression that he is still out

Here's the Melo link...

http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nba/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&id=5908902

As you will see, there is really nothing to it. Also, as we expect, we would have to give solid assets just to get a rental, which would obviously be a terrible move.

That's why I'm pretty much against it

I don’t like giving up good team assets in exchange for a half-season rental, even if it’s for someone like Melo.

If I was coach

I’d start Livingston. No offense to DJ, he’s been good this year but I’m afraid Rondo destroys him. DJ has trouble against quick point guards and the Celtics set a lot of screens.

With Livingston, his height and wingspan advantage significantly cut into Rondo’s passing lanes. Plus with Liv on the court, switching off on screens doesn’t become a big deal since you basically have 3 small forwards in the backcourt that can switch off at will.

I just see the disadvantage of DJ on Rondo overwhelming whatever advantage we get from Livingston on Robinson

One factor in trade rumors beginning to swirl is that December 15 is approaching

On December 15 the free agents that teams signed over the summer can be included in trades.

Also note that the Collective Bargaining Agreement CBA expires on December 15, 2010. Nothing to do with trades, but it should make for a fun off-season next year. I believe on page 304, subsection 23A, paragraph e, of the proposed new CBA, the “Jordan Exception” will allow MJ to sign players who are contractually obligated to the Jordan Brand to minimum salary player contracts for the duration of their Jordan Brand contract. That last part is just a rumor I made up, so be careful not to fall into the “Sarchasm”.

The comparison between Rondo and Rose is pretty silly.

Rose is miles ahead of Rondo as a scorer, and is his probably his equal as a playmaker. Rondo has the edge on defense and rebounding.
