Bobcats lose to Pacers 104-101

It's dispiriting that a near-consensus non-playoff team like the Indiana Pacers stayed close to the Bobcats all night, and then pulled ahead in the final minutes to snatch a win, 104-101.

Gerald Wallace led the way for Charlotte, scoring 29 points and doing most of the work on keeping Danny Granger from going full nova. Though he didn't shoot well from the field (1-6), Tyrus Thomas provided a defensive spark off the bench and frequently got to the free throw line, where he drained all his attempts (9-9).

If the Cats want to make the playoffs, a realistic path to the postseason must include consistent winning over non-contenders like the Pacers. "Dispiriting" might not be the right word. Maybe the more obvious "disappointing" better captures it.

GAME THREAD COMMENTS

Tim Rudisill -- Every time the announcer says "Paul George" my mind replaces it with "Boy George". It’s one way to make a Pacers game more interesting.

Supercam -- Wallace just got fouled and didn't hit the ground...remember where you were when this happened, it won't happen again

BAD

-- We know Stephen Jackson will have these types of games. As rapturous as it is when he's splashing threes and disrupting passing lanes, 10 points on 4-13 shooting doesn't cut it.

-- Nazr Mohammed is a totally competent NBA big man, but he's miscast as a starting center, and Larry Brown is probably justified in playing DeSagana Diop over 20 minutes, because even though Diop is a terrible offensive player, he looks solid on defense. If a guy's only going to be solid on one end of the floor, I appreciate going with the better defender.

-- Bad job by the Bobcats putting the ball into Tyrus Thomas's hands, in the post, isolated on Roy Hibbert, with 12 seconds to go, down by one. As iso play is the default last-second call, because it sets up a hero narrative, but with no single go-to scorer, running a play like it's any other possession is the best course of action.

GOOD

-- Gerald Wallace hasn't skipped a beat from last season. 29 points, including 12-18 from the free throw line (for comparison, Indiana attempted 24 free throws as a team), 6 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block is right in line with his performance once Tyrus Thomas joined the team last season.

-- I like this version of Boris Diaw. He's taking threes, which pulls big men away from the basket, but he's also concentrating on rebounding (8), so I'm less concerned about "only" 13 points and "only" 2 assists.

-- Derrick Brown and Gerald Henderson combined to shoot 5-5 from the field and get 14 points. The roster crunch and Larry Brown's preference to play Wallace and Jackson as many minutes as possible cuts into their playing time significantly. They were impressive, but they don't deserve to play ahead of Crash 'n Jax. It's a tough situation.

Points to Ponder

1) How do we recover from 12 – 3 pointers being made? We MUST defend against the 3pt shot. The NBA thrives on it…don’t let every team take them, just because we don’t.

2) I want last year’s Nazr. We get the 10 points from where he missed shots UNDER the basket and we’re discussing a win. Instead we lose by 3.

3) Did Vertigo T win the game for the Pacers? He definitely was prancing around like he did. Just thought I would check. Just refreshes my HATE for UNC.

4) No complaints from the 1 position…from the 5…When do we get to see Kwame? He may not be the answer, but DANG!

5) We look WAY better than we did after game 2 of last season. We should have won tonight, but the LB “slow team” curse struck again. Maybe next game.

6) Our bench looked great. Even Diop came in and did what he was supposed to.

That’s all I got for tonight. No blogging from me again. I start watching the game, and I get so into it…I’d be useless in the blog.

Wait for it™

Diop

I think he’s awful, I don’t know why he continues to get reasonable minutes.

Thomas is a better off the ball center who needs to get the ball in the low block to be effective. The slash we saw on the last play of the game is not really his style in my opinion.

We weren't having trouble scoring tonight. Any night we drop in 100+ without O.T. is a rarity.

Our super-duper defense let us down in a big way. It’s weird because we beat them to death on the offensive boards and outgunned them on defensive rebounds as well. Our turnovers, while far from perfect, were a bit of an improvement. It wasn’t on the statline we got beaten, it was because we left the lanes unprotected far too often and didn’t come out to cover the perimeter either. Each time we closed in they kicked it out. Any time we spread the floor, they shot into the lanes. We’re better than that but barely showed it. We’ve only played 2 games, but coughed up over 100 points each time. It’s a cause for concern.

To address points made by others…

It’s going to be interesting to see how much burn our bench gets tomorrow night. Wisconsin is an unpleasant flight for a back-to-back and the starters are going to be showing the fatigue come the second half if we don’t rest them well early.

BJohnston – If you watch the game tomorrow night, don’t focus on Diop’s offensive game. He simply doesn’t have one. I made that mistake at first too. He’s a rarity – the defensive minded center. Watch him at the other end. He alters shots, clogs the lane, boxes out on the boards, and generally makes life hell for the opposing big men in the paint.
He’s not my favorite – amongst active players his one of my least favoriteon the team – but when the Cats are scoring well (as they were most of the game tonight) he’s a better option than Nazr. If we could put Diop and Nazr together skill-wise they would make one pretty decent big.

My early assessment of the Cats thus far is that Thomas and D Brown are bolstering our bench and providing an exciting offensive spark. Henderson still isn’t up to speed, and for that matter neither is Livingston. But they’re both coming off injuries and Henderson in particular seems to improve each game. (I’m counting summer ball and the preseason there.)

Our offense has been a nice surprise. (59 points in LAST season’s opener, if anyone could have possibly forgotten)
What has me worried right now is our defense. The loss of Raymond Felton is impacting us far more on defense than it is on offense. Deej is running the floor adequately enough, but he can’t seem to keep anyone in front of him either in transition, or on sets. He can’t handle a screen or a high pick to save his life. Hopefully that will get better with more time in the starter’s slot. It’s fun to watch him light up the 3-pointers, but we need him to improve on the defensive end ASAP.

This is the NBA and there aren’t more than a couple of teams that you can let stay close to you at home without getting burned in the final minutes. The Cats have never had a strong closing lineup or a go-to guy and any team within 6 of us in the last 4 minutes of the game is likely to get the W more often than not. I truly hate to say this because it’s so early in the season, but we badly need a road win against the Bucks or the fears of becoming this year’s Nets are going to start creeping into the minds of both the fans AND the players. Larry Brown looked 100 year’s old in the after game press conference. Friendship be damned. Michael Jordan is a competitor first and a BFF second. If we aren’t at least at .500 by game 10 I fully expect him to be carrying a pink slip in his pocket with Brown’s name on it.

I can't see MJ firing Brown in the middle of the season. Not unless

Brown complains of health issues or something or this team is winless in January. I can see him initiating a major trade if this team doesn’t pull it together soon. Unfortunately, with a tough road trip ahead, this team could end up 0-5. UGGH!
Last night was a kick in the nads. TJ Ford killed us late with dribble penetration and DJ trailing behind. Think about that. TJ Ford. DJ’s defense is a major weakness on this team. Perimeter defense was also abysmyl. I agree with you OD that it was our D that lost this one. But I’ll also say that the officiating was horrendous-eventhough I’ve come to expect that. Two calls that really ticked me off. The no-call on DJ and then the subsequent technical for clapping his hands. Come on! He was absolutely mugged and then reacted to the mugging and received a technical. I understand the new rule but that one was beyond the pale. Stern is sucking the fun right out of this league. The second call was the Diop foul on Granger’s 3. Never touched him. Phantom call given to the star player. That to me sums up the lack of respect the ‘Cats receive from the Zebras. A complete mugging on one side-no call-then technical and then Diop breathes on Granger for a four point play. The ’Cats lost this one on their own, no excuses, but the disparity in the calls has got to change.
The scouting report on this team is simple. Make the ’Cats shoot long jumpers. Zone defense. On offense, dribble penetrate and kick out for the 3 (see ’09 playoffs). I’m going to get skewered for this comment but I’d like to see more of Carroll. We need more perimeter shooters (not you Boris) to keep defenses honest. DJ can knock it down consistently but who else? Jack – brick. Wallace – brick. Diaw – brick. My kingdom for some shooters and a go-to guy.

by blueridgecat on Oct 30, 2010 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

fully agree with Matt Carroll playing in a game

like this. If Boris and Jack are going to brick em anyway. Let Carroll atleast try. I wanted to see him in the game. We need a guy like John Salmons. I lights-out shooter that can come in and ignite the team.

BTW poor shooting be damned. Tyrus Thomas is purely awesome. He’s only going to get better. He forces teams to defend him and respect his game. I am fully convinced that Tyrus Thomas IS the future of this team.

You noticed that also

“A complete mugging on one side-no call-then technical and then Diop breathes on Granger for a four point play.”

The Diop non-foul even made the NBA.com highlight reel.

The announcers failed to mention it was not a foul.

Doubt that....

They’ll be pulling off some trades before MJ gets rid of LB. Larry will simply tell MJ that I told you so and this is the team you gave me. We need more pieces. Expect a trade involving a big. Don’t see MJ trading DJ…he’s signed to Jordan brand.

by paison on Oct 30, 2010 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

DJ played well offensively but he got TOASTED defensively. The reason we’re 0-2 is clearly our issues on defense and the obvious difference is that DJ is far less effective on that end than Felton was. TJ got wherever he wanted to go and forced us to rotate and rotate and rotate. And give the Pacers credit, they kept making the extra pass and then hit the glass.

On a positive note, we are scoring at a higher rate than I expected and we’re pretty banged up. Livingston and Henderson don’t look comfortable yet and I don’t care what anyone is saying publicly, Jack has to be banged up. I could have got into the lane quicker than him last night and that’s not normal. It was obvious he was a few steps slow.

I do have a hard time believing LB will be fired in the middle of the season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a trade coming if things continue to slide but we’re only 2 games in so it’s not time to push the panic button yet.

Gave that one away last night ……..

Man, Jack was disappointing last night

Bad shots. Turnovers. Just overall a rough game for him. Wanted to see more of UPS late in the game. I feel like he adds an energy that a lot of people pretty much foul because they can’t defend.

All negativity aside. I would like to address something that was amazing last night. I know it was opening night and people are pumped, but there were A LOT of things different about the cable box last night.

The vibe was AWESOME. Chants almost every play. The crowd was WAY into it. Had some guys with a “Bobcats Block Party” that put up "B"s everytime the Cats got a block. They actually had the “Noise meter” during the regular season! I had only seen it brought out for big games. Great to see it against the Pacers of all teams. It really seemed like this city is finally starting to back the Bobcats. The production of the game was more professional than ever. We have better sponsers now as well. When they showed the ads for some of the older sponsers that we’ve had. They looked cheap in comparison to the new ones. The staff was more friendly than normal. Even the shirts they handed out were better quality than I expected(and for an XL it really fit better than I thought it would). I really felt like we were part of something last night. I know it was the home season opener, but if this trend continues it’s going to be a great thing for this city and this team.

80 games to go. I was disheartened to no end, but I have a lot of confidence in this team.

GO BOBCATS!

I hope you're right.

The crowd was big and loud – even watching on TV.
My fear is that if we start off as bad or worse than last season’s 3-9 the newer fans will become disheartened.

I think we're still finding our groove

I really think LB substitues poorly. It seems when players hit their stride, or start really doing well. He pulls them. Dj’s passing was far improved last night, especially under the basket. Liv needs to get back into it and shake the dust off. He looks like he’s struggling. Once Jack gets out of this funk. We’ll be back on track for success. He really is the final piece of what was a rather complete offense last night(till the last 4 minutes when we shut down…and NEEDED Jack to be Jack). I think a sprinkle of Matt Carroll here and there would do our 3pt % wonders. He needs to be in the game.

The wave

I was at the game last night and just got around to sifting through the gameday threads. Some high comedy for sure. But I can explain the wave and have to admit, it was hilarious if you saw how it came about.

My seats are in 102 and there was a guy sitting in my section last night that was dressed up like a cop. Think CHiPs with shorts about the same size as the LadyCats. Yeah, it was tough to take but he was prancing around seeking attention and was getting laughed and mocked by everyone around.

Well as the game went on and he became increasingly more …. how shall I say … inebriated, he began proclaiming we were going to get the wave going at the end of the 3rd quarter. Well, it took lots of efforts where it only made it a few sections but he finally pulled it off. I didn’t partake in the wave because, as you guys mentioned, it is extremely gay. But I give this guy a lot of credit. He worked hard to pull it off.

Sorry for the long winded story because this is probably a “had to be there” moment. But it was funny as hell in person.

as non-heterosexual as the wave is

it is a good sign we’re getting more crowd participation

I find the lack of love for the wave disturbing.

It’s fun to do and gives people an excuse to cheer and jump out of their seats.

Respect the wave.

Agreed. Don't care for the wave.

I did like the enthusiasm of the crowd. Very loud and appreciative of hustle plays where I was at.

I was embarased for Charlotte when the wave started last night. The wave is for the casual who realy dosnt care what is going on in the game. I wanted to slap someone for starting that wave. The Bobcats were blowing the lead they had all game and every one is standing up waving their arms. GAY

Not sure how many games are winnable with DJ as the starting PG.

He can’t guard anyone. Him getting abused on every P&R broke down the entire defense and led to a lot of open shots. Add in the fact he’s shooting 29% through two games and it’s pretty easy to see why this team is 0-2. Obviously I don’t expect him to shoot that poorly, but he’s better off as a bench player at this point.

by Spider Jerusalem on Oct 30, 2010 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

DJ is still a great option as a back-up PG

We just don’t have a starter. Aren’t we playing Livingston $7 mil a year? This guy has been worthless so far. He plays very cautiously. All that he has shown he can do is post up a shorter PG.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Oct 30, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

$3.5 million a year and give him time

He’s coming off an injury and hasn’t really had any time to get a hang of the offense. He missed most of training camp and the preseason. It may take a few more games for him to get acclimated but I think he’ll get the hang of it

Yeah, that's the problem. No clear-cut starter.

Livingston was ok for the Wizards last year, but I don’t think he’s a realistic option either. With Ridnour and Blake available and a gigantic hole at PG, coming away with Livingston/Collins is a bit disappointing. Them’s the breaks, I suppose.

by Spider Jerusalem on Oct 30, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that once Livingston hits his stride, he'll be a clear-cut starter.

His length will give opposing PG’s fits and allow him to really dominate. All he needs is to hit his groove.

by Tim Rudisill on Oct 30, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

It's glaringly obvious that our biggest problem is at the 5.

Anything else is secondary. As we approached the season we had big question marks at both the one and the five as well as major doubts about depth.

The bench has been producing beyond anyone’s expectations. Point guard could be better, but it’s not nearly the disaster we all feared – at least not yet. But Nazr has been a bust thus fat as the starting center and Diop is an all defense, no offense center. We’re in deep doo-doo at the five and if we fail to bring someone in until the deadline this season will be very close to being a total wash.

He cost us the win because of his poor defense, I agree.

But he’s improving game by game. I think he’s a pleasant surprise at the one.
