Darius Miles! Boris Diaw! D.J. Augustin! Marcin Gortat!

Preseason games hardly matter. That said: Darius Miles! Boris Diaw! D.J. Augustin!

They get the ! treatment for fascinating box score lines from last night in Orlando. In case you forget what he was like way back when, Miles was the original Anthony Randolph, and this line sort of resembles every tough game Randolph played last year, with 4-7 shooting, 3 blocks, a steal, and 2 turnovers in over 16 minutes. At this point, it's hard to say what he's capable of doing, but there's got to be more upside in Miles than there is in Dominic McGuire, who, if he's not wearing number zero yet, probably should consider it (0-4 shooting, 0 rebounds, 1 block, 1 turnover, 2 assists in over 10 minutes).

Boris Diaw: 1-1 from the field, a three-pointer. 7 rebounds. 1 steal. 0 turnovers. 0 fouls. All in 23 minutes. There's no word on his defense, but that's some solid big-man production.

D.J. Augustin: 5-8 from the field, 4-5 from three, for 17 points. If I've learned to accept that he's simply not good at driving and dishing, can Larry Brown? Dude has a terrible 2P% for his career, probably because he's so small, so it makes little sense for him to be a traditional drive and kick, offense-creating point guard until he proves he can play inside the arc a bit. Let Stephen Jackson initiate offense that way, since defenses will respect his drives to the rim.

Final thought: Is Marcin Gortat perfect for the Bobcats, or would Marcin Gortat be perfect for the Bobcats?

No love for UPS?

11 points from 5-9 shooting, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover.

And I really do like the idea of Gortat as our starting center. The question I have is would he like it?

10 in the box, man to man coverage? Well, what are you waiting for?! Motion our only wide out back towards the line, and let's PUNCH THEM IN THE MOUTH with a RB dive right up the gut for a big 1st down gain! OK, "Dead Horse" on 1...

The other question...

Would the Bobcats FO even consider it??

by NCMAC on Oct 15, 2010 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

all about it

he’d be PERFECT. I know we’d probably have to shed Naz for him, but I think he and Naz would be a KILLER 1-2 punch at the C position. Imagine the lineup of:

DJ
Jax
Predator
Tyrusauras
Gortat

bad ass is what that is.

Magic may trade Gortat's Nose on the cheap

Maybe not as ideal as signing a body part of Greg Oden, but I hear the Nose is pretty good at altering shots.

by Ft.Mill Bobcat on Oct 15, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Doubt it

I don’t think MJ wants anything to do with 4 years/28 million of Gortat. We’re already cap strapped as it is and long term debt for a marginal player is a big no no right now.

by Bring Back Primoz on Oct 15, 2010 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

But what if he thrives in a starting role?

When adjusted for 36 mpg (decent starter minutes), Gortat would be averaging a double-double for his career, along with 2 blocks a game. I think he’s going to be starting somewhere sooner or later…why not here?

I do agree with you point, though. His contract is not attractive, and we have plenty of those already.

I don't think he would be able to maintain that in a starter's capacity,

but I’d be willing to do a Gortat/Nazr swap. He would definitely be better than anything we have now. My only concern is having him and Diop on the books at the same time and whether he would clash with Brown’s defense first mentality.

This video from his FIBA performance may change your mind

"Teams are making adjustments to us, it’s not the other way around," Smith said. "Right after (the Heat) signed LeBron and Bosh, they went out and signed eight centers. So I’m not overly concerned."

what if he's actually Diop with a mask on

Given more minutes, his production would plummet. Plus we don’t have anywhere near the shooters Orlando does, so teams could stuff the box on us & exploit him for our lack of spacing

Solid game. Just wasn’t “fascinated” by it at the time.

I applaud DJ...

I don’t care if he was up against the team’s 1st string, 2nd string, or the cheerleading squad.

I think he’s figuring it out…

Now as for the C position…

Wait for it™

Funny... I don't want to be 'that guy'

But I remember when we talked about this a month ago I was lambasted by several on this blog for suggesting center was a bigger concern than PG.

It matter’s not though, because my faith in Augustin seems to be paying off for now.

I certainly hope you're right

But even Morrison looked good in the preseason his first year here. Let’s hope DJ plays well when the games start counting.

by Bring Back Primoz on Oct 15, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I also hope James is right

D.J. has kept the turnover to a minimum, but we still had 20 last night. The offense is still inefficient (at least this preseason), which is why point guard is still the primary concern in my eyes. We’re still not seeing anything that says his defense has improved.

I applaud D.J. for doing well (hopefully his scoring touch is here to stay), but my questions concerning the point guard position are no more answered now than they were a month ago.

by and1droid on Oct 15, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Another thing

Livingston hasn’t even played yet.

Yea PG is still a concern.

by and1droid on Oct 15, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's scarier than DJ

But that’s what you get with a backup PG with one knee.

by Bring Back Primoz on Oct 15, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

So true..

This offense is still bad! Shades of the same problem from last year…I just hope Matt C. can step up and hit some 3’s for us this year! And Larry Brown needs to get his head outta the old school style of play, every team now needs sufficient 3 point shooters! If he doesn’t understand that, then he needs to go!You can’t just have guys driving to the lane all day!

by jah p on Oct 15, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

But is the solution to focus on the point guard?

Brown doesn’t want our offense to come from the point. He wants it to run THROUGH the point. Getting a center that can score isn’t the simplest of tasks in this league, but it fixes ALL of our problems. The team can function quite well with average point guards thankyouverymuch as long as we have the means to power the ball inside.
Our offensive output has been pitiful in the preseason – even worse than it was last season. Our scoring threat is nonexistent. But look at the numbers our centers have put up. Now look at the numbers our point guards have been putting up. Look at DJ’s point figure from the last game. It should be glaringly apparent that our offensive woes are centered in the paint, pun intended.

I'm not Gortat's biggest fan - to put it gently.

That’s no secret.
But I’m a Bobcats fan first. If he winds up playing for Charlotte I’ll give him the best chance to prove himself that I’m able. I don’t believe he’s the answer. I don’t think he’s good enough to be a starter on most teams in the league and I believe that if we bring him in it would still mean center by commitee. He would be a massive upgrade from DIop though, no doubt about that whatsoever.

D.J. can score sure

But that doesn’t mean he automatically fits as our point guard. Before I start talking about D.J. though, I’m going to go on a bit of a tangent:

We would all love an upgrade at either the 1 or the 5. The discussion over which is more important largely represents an arbitrary talking point for people who love talking about basketball. As I am one of those people, I’m invariably drawn in to the discussion. But with that in mind, I’ll try not to be so vehement in my rebuttal.

D.J. had a good game last night, which suggests that he may be coming into his own as a scorer. He’s the best point guard we have, and quite honestly, I’m not desperate to see him traded. I would welcome it, but I’m not losing any sleep over him.

When your point guard hits 4 of 5 3s and puts up a 4 assist, 2 turnover night and the team still has 20 turnovers and shoots 39% from the floor, your point guard isn’t running the offense. I’m concerned about the 1 because we don’t have one (pun intended). And we’re not even talking about his still deficient defense. David is right to recognize that D.J. is not, and probably will not be the primary play maker on this team.

We all saw Felton’s efficiency improve last season and thanked our lucky stars that Jax was willing to handle the ball and make passes. Unfortunately, many of us (myself included at the time) glossed over the fact that Jax made poor decisions, took horrible shots at the beginning of the shot clock, and probably made many of the turnovers that Felton would have made had he had the ball more. We’ll see more of that this season. We may get a little better since D.J. can spread the floor with his shooting, but I still want a point guard.

What do we have at the 5? A committee of very tall gentlemen who, if nothing more, can plug up holes in the middle. Not great by any means. Still a concern, but how many centers are expected to make the offense run the way a point guard is? Our team need is offense, and it’s easier to expect that offense to come from the wings and from the point. Defensively, I think our guys at the 5 can work as well as Chandler, Nazr, and Theo did last season. Diaw and Tyrus will be played together down the stretch. The 5 is still a team need, but if we’re making a wish list, I’m still asking for a point guard.

The preseason can be deceptive

but I like the numbers I am seeing from Miles. The previous game he had 8 rebounds and 7 points in limited minutes.

It'd be nice

to actually see him play instead of a box score. I have no idea who’s playing well right now.

I heard the Miami game on Monday will the televised

I don’t know what flavor of Sports South will carry the game,
but we should be able to find it on atdhe.net.

I’d also like to see these new players rather than read the box score.

There is also a home game at 11am on a weekday. The Bobcats set it up this way so middle school kids could get a look at the Bobcats.

Bobcats offered season ticket holders an option of trading the tickets

to the 11am preseason game against New Orleans on October 20 for tickets to a regular season game. I already jumped at that offer.

Maybe you could put on a school uniform and infiltrate a Charlotte middle school bus stop that morning and score some tickets. Or call a local school to volunteer your chaperon services.
