A few observations
Ahh, a classic topic header of mine returns for a second season. Pity it isn't by popular demand.
We're now 3 preseason games into the Larry Brown Annual Evaluation For Butt Chewing Candidates.
Here are some things I'm seeing. Basketball related matters will be after the jump.
1. Preseason coverage SUCKS. Yahoo didn't even tell me there was a game today so I missed it entirely.
2. I still can't find any solid information on which games will be televised to the ravening masses.
3. It's going to be a busy season for my laptop viewing.
On to more serious matters.
I'm loving the aggression I'm seeing from DJ Augustin. His scoring is comparable - if not even a little bit better - than Raymond Felton's numbers from last season.
I'm HATING the one deadly trend I'm seeing from the Bobcats. Our assist totals are not just subpar, they're all but nonexistent. DJ is lucky to wind up with more than one per game. This wouldn't bother me if I knew the offense was being run through Diaw and Jackson, but there's no way for us to see that and evaluate at this point is there? But even if the team were running the offense through DJ, Coach Brown's multiple pass offensive sets would result in less assists for the point guard. Of course, back in the good old days of RayRay, the offensive sets ran back through the point, so there really is no excuse whatsoever for the team to have such pitiful assist figures.
It's preseason, so we needn't look at the stats of TT, Gerald Wallace, or Jackson. We know they're not only on the final squad, we know what they will be doing once the season starts. We need to be looking at those players that are either new, on the bubble to make the team, or that we have hopes will be returning with something worthy of an NBA franchise.
In game 3 Gerald Henderson lit the scoreboard up. He bagged 9 points in just over 10 minutes on 4-6 shooting and managed to draw a foul for an add 1. To quote Deniece WIlliams, "Let's Hear it for the Boy." One game is certainly not enough to form a judgement, but this was quite an impressive debut.
DJ continues to score better than his famous sophomore slump period. However, once again he managed only 2 assists in almost 28 minutes. I really need to see the team play to see if there's a reasonable explanation for such a low output. Defensively he doesn't seem to be showing much flair either - at least going by his (and his opponent's) stats. I'm encouraged, but concerned as well.
Diaw has proven to be... well, Diaw. Do we really intend to keep paying this man for 1 out of 4 games he decides to act like an NBA player? We have to get him the hell off of our squad. Mike? Rod? C'mon guys. Put him on Ebay or something. Otherwise he's going to become this year's Chandler and start missing games with "back spasms" or some other phantom injury every time LB or Jackson gets in his grill.
Diop got a taste of what it's like to be on a team without a true starter at the 5 spot. I can't recall the last time he played 23+ minutes in an NBA game. In that time he managed a whopping 4 points, proved he still couldn't hit a free throw if they gave him a dozen do-overs, and pulled down a blistering pair of rebounds. Bobcats fans? Be afraid. Be very afraid. Point guard may just work itself out but our Center situation just became the San Andreas Fault - a massive disaster just waiting to happen.
On to the bubble players...
Critts barely played today but his performance in the first two games has been impressive enough that not only do I want to see him there on opening night, as you can see, I've already made a first feeble attempt to dub him with an official Bobcats nickname.
Sherron Collins put in a respectable 20 minutes which is a good start, but he only managed to score 2 points on 1 for 8 shooting. On a more positive note, he did manage to rank second in assists behind Wallace, but once again, between the two of them they got more than half of the entire team's assists for the game. Two year contract? Really? On a team with a pair of 5' 11" guards, one of them has got to go and as much as I'm pulling for Collins, the numbers have to improve in a hurry or he's going to get thrown on the trade bait pile.
To summize:
Diaw and Collins are looking like the type of trade bait that nobody will want. Our problem at center is now exposed to be much bigger than most of us had feared - and we were already scared (insert brown word)less. With Diop on the court our opponents can simply leave him standing alone under the basket without worrying and then pound us to death in the paint at the other end.
Derrick Brown is still proving himself to be one of the savviest second round picks in recent years. He is a badly needed shot in the arm off the bench and if LB fails to use him than LB deserves a badly needed shot in the head.
One game does not a player make, but Gerald Henderson looks like he is about to arrive in the NBA.
If we cannot bring at least one solidly defensive big in to play center (shedding at least 2 to 3 of our marginal players in the process) this team is in serious doo-doo. It will take the other 29 NBA coaches about 5 seconds to find our Achilles Heel and exploit it and after that the fecal matter will strike the oscillating cooling device night after night after night.
I don't give a crap that we're now 0-3 in the preseason. Coach Brown is using this time to examine his options and weed out the scrubs. What I do care about is two things. First, the looming disaster at the center spot. Second, the number of references to ca-ca I managed to "dump" into the latter part of this lengthy post. As many may have already surmised, apparently I'm full of shit and too scared to actually say it. Anyone got an extra Ex-Lax?

Nail on the head...
Our problem down low being exposed by Drew Gooden…DREW GOODEN!?!?!?
We need a C and we need one in a big way. Kwame Brown, where are you and your ankle. Seriously…We need to find someone who just loves Diaw’s vesatility as much as LB and half of RoF does. I kept looking for what we could do at Center, and all I could find was Conley in Memphis. Now I know we don’t need him as bad as we need a Center. Guess my focus will turn to teams not wanting their centers for some reason. Hortford coms to mind, but he’s more PF-ish. Sadly at this point, I’d still take him. Greg Oden? Birdman? Nene? Kaman? Seriously…I don’t know what we’re going to do. I can imagine Diop has lots of rust to knock off…if he isn’t rusted all the way through(more likely), but Nazr reads/sounds limited(reads/sounds because its all we’ve had so far), Kwame is a HUGE ?, and well…unless Jolly Rogers can come in from a Division II school and just instantly make an impact, some of us here at RoF may get a phone call to try out. Also a concern is if we can’t move Collins in anything other than a trade, I don’t think we can do it before December. Actually this holds true for several…
Miles = Dec 23
Collins = Dec 15
McGuire = Dec 15
Crittenton = Dec 23
K. Brown = Dec 15
Long time to have to wait to unload these guys.
Seems crazy that we did this to ourselves…unless we aren’t concerned with cutting these guys and paying them to stay home through December…we can do that …right?
Wait for it™
Why don't I take this post and turn it into a rosterbation thread:
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2bu584d
or
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=293ncrt
First one makes more sense for us…unless we pull off a trade later to move Smith and Nazr for something…you know, 2 expirings totalling over $13 mil…for ?

Thanks for this post ourday
I wasn’t able to catch the game last night and this was a very nice summery of the game even more so than ones found on actual media websites.
well, more news on the melo trade front.
there is news that we could end up with andre miller in a 5 team trade. we send diaw out and receive miller, jersey sends harris to the blazers, and erceive melo. this is just a brief summary of the trade, there are more pieces. go to hoopshype and you will see the entire thing

Any chance we send something for a Center?
I’ll go to hoopshype and check it out. I know Denver better do something soon…that is a bad scene in there right now

Peter Vescey in the New York Post
Don’t buy it. That guy is a moron and just throws sh*t against the wall to see if it sticks.
If you believe my reports you'll believe this. If you don't you'll think I'm blowing smoke.
The talks about Melo never ended. The Nets feel like he’s already on the team and are planning their season with that expectation. Right now the only public report is from the NY Post and it’s the Nets version of Bonnell – meaning that the Nets feed him info and sometimes it’s very misleading.
Higgins has kept the Bobcats in the middle of the talks and the scuttlebutt is that he has Denver convinced that all roads to a peaceful resolution to the Melo situation go through Charlotte. But the problem still exists that the decision maker in Denver changes as often as the arrival status board at the Charlotte airport.
Something is going to happen – I’d say with almost certainty before the season opener. I say that because Denver’s front office is looking like a sideshow freak tent to the rest of the league. The other 29 teams know Denver has to move Anthony. Denver management is desperate to restore some credibility and wants to stabilize its roster before the season begins. New Jersey management is largely just waiting to see which of several scenarios Denver will finally decide is best.
Coach Brown is currently preparing to start the season with Boris Diaw on the squad. He wants to bring in a center and has been VERY vocal about it. The lengthy burn Diop got in the last game was a message to the front office showing them what the season is going to look like with our present center situation. Kwame is still a big question mark.
What does it all mean? My translation of everything I’ve heard is that Carmelo Anthony WILL be with the Nets by the end of the month. The odds are still better than 50-50 that Charlotte will be involved in the final deal. Jordan is willing (hell, EAGER is a better word) to offer up Diaw and perhaps a little more. He wants a center but he’ll take a solid point guard if it saves money. The reasoning is that it will give him extra cash to go shopping for that elusive big man. Denver has come back with several scenarios involving Gerald Wallace but the Bobcats are holding firm that Denver can’t offer anything worth trading our “untouchable” asset away. Right now Nuggets management is painted into a very tight corner and it’s a pretty safe bet that the final trade is going to end up with Denver taking a pretty solid screwing.
Clear as mud, right? Sorry guys, it’s all I can offer.

that's a lot to offer bud
From the moment ‘Melo stepped up to the Denver mics initially I felt like I knew he’d be gone soon. It makes too much sense to move him now, versus how Cleveland handled LeBrick Shames. I have no objections to shipping Diaw, isn’t that part of why we resigned Tyrus?

Excellent info...
as always Ourday. Like I said before, I know something is gonna happen. I just feel like there’s no way a melo deal goes down without us being involved…
Going back to the previous deal that’s seemingly “dead”, sounds to me like we were being exchanged for Portland in the deal…meaning we weren’t going to be involved at all, Harris would go to Portland and I’m Miller going to either Jersey or Denver (can’t imagine him going to Utah but I guess anything is possible). But seems like everyone above is thinking we would have received Andre Miller….but I don’t believe that’s the case. (not directing this at you Ourday, just combining and couple posts into one) :)

I don't think he's "refusing" to win.
I do think he’s beating the bushes. He knows what to expect from his three core players. He’s observing the bench and looking for the player(s) that he can work with and cajole into igniting the second unit. Since preseason games have little to no value, he has the luxury of tinkering. He isn’t in the unfortunate shoes of the coaches of teams sent to Europe where international fans are drooling over themselves at the thought of watching Kobe live and American fans are watching closer than they otherwise might.
Also, I don’t think Brown wants to tip our hand. If we come out of the preseason without any decisive wins it might just lure the first few teams we face into thinking we’ll just roll over for them. There isn’t that big of a chance we’ll catch them by surprise but it is a real possibility that the rest of the league still holds the team in some contempt and if we look like wannabes in the preseason it only builds on that impression.
We all know LB. He’ll use any edge he can find. I wouldn’t put it past him. Regardless, you can bet we aren’t going to get a very good look at the “real” Charlotte Bobcats until the chase for a playoff seed begins on opening night.

Pre-season is used for exactly what OurDay said
Evaluating talent and seeing who plays together and who develops their game. Who rolls and who folds at cruch time. Unfortunately LB believes Diaw is one of our 3 core players, and that is a very sad statement. We have 2 core players, period. LB loves being able to plug Boris into nearly any configuration, but he’s nothing more than a cork in the hole. Diaw gives a performance of value about every 4th game…the rest of the time he’s floating along.
Pre-season is valuable in observing the quality of our play as a team and especially the quality of individual players. This is the criteria I review…not wins & losses. Hence, this is where I have major concerns akin to OurDay’s original post. Everybody see’s our weaknesses and they will exploit them quickly and profoundly each and every game. Small ball will not cure our illness.
Excellent breakdown OurDay
Don’t see why Hendo won’t make a solid impact this year, though you’re right – can’t get too excited about 1 game. I think I saw Diop block a half a shot in a game once, & all I could think was: aww snap the Diopper-Stopper has arrived! So I’ve learned my lesson.
As for acuiring a big…. I think Dalembert is our best bet…
1) Charlotte should be more appealing to him in several ways -
closer to Haiti than Sac-Town
we are more likely to be playoff-bound
guaranteed starting position
2) Sac-Town won’t need him as bad as their young core work together more. He’s going to have to battle for minutes between Cousins, Whiteside, Thompson, Landry
The question would be… is Augustin & Mohammed / Diaw enough for him?
by bobcatRedemption on Oct 10, 2010 8:15 PM EDT reply actions
Half a block? Is that like a little bit pregnant?
I think Derrick Brown has a nice game. He should have received a lot more minutes last year because I thought he contributed every time he was on the floor.
And I know there are lots of Henderson lovers on this board so I’ll try not to offend anyone but …….. I have serious doubts if he’s an NBA player. But we need to let him play and find out for sure this year.

Dalembert would be a great fit for us
and if the Miller deal goes down, he and Dalembert give us the best starting 5 the team has ever had.
I think it’ll be tough to get a deal done. Dalembert is a fairly large expiring deal this season, which gives us less leverage with Nazr’s contract. Add to that the fact that Sac-town has one of the cheapest payrolls in basketball and we see that the Kings are only dealing with us if we give them talent in return. So the question becomes “what talent do they need?”
The Kings are kind of the Bizarro Bobcats in that the 1, 4, and 5 are really where they’re strong. Evans and Beno make a formidable point guard rotation that can even play together when necessary. Dalembert undoubtedly begins the season as a starter, but the he can become expendable if Cousins comes along early. Add J Thompson, Landry, and even Whiteside to the mix and the front court looks like an area of strength.
The Kings need wings. Yea they have some promising pieces on the wings, but they’ve be largely inconsistent. Certain players are off the table when it comes to trading for Dalembert (obviously), but Sac-town will undoubtedly try and pry the Derrick Brown and or Gerald Henderson from our hands. A combination of Nazr (to offset the loss of Dalembert position and salary-wise) and one of our young wings is where this deal would be headed.
I’m not considering Diaw because: A) more likely that he’s traded for a pg than a center at this point, and B) sort of related to A, but it’s not worth losing Diaw’s versatility to have Dalember, Brown, Diop, and potentially Nazr all on the same roster. I don’t think that kind of deal makes us better.
D.J. may have to be thrown in just to make salaries work, but I doubt Sac. wants him.
I’m saying all of this because I agree that Dalembert is one of our best options to trade for a starting caliber center. Unfortunately, however, it’s not the most likely deal. The Bobs have made it clear that they’re hunting for a new PG.
Truth. it's a longshot
holy Sasquatches on fire – Miller, Jax, Wallace, Thomas, Dalembert – definitely would be our best yet….
Can’t disagree with any of your points. I started looking for a 3rd team where Donte Green came to us & wings went to the Sac Queens, but lethargy caught me with my pants down

He tries to dunk on everyone, every play
He’s the best dancer on the team and has the cleanest goatee ever.
He's a slasher.
If you put the ball into his hands he immediately looks for an open lane to the basket. He’s not the best at drawing contact yet, but he’s learning. If you get the chance to watch him, the moment he sees an open chance to cut through the paint his eyes literally light up.
He plays hungry on offense and he plays like a student trying his best to learn on defense.

Derr Devil is still at least a season and a half away from being his best.
Had Brown spent more minutes in developing him last season I believe he’d be a true force.
It’s going to be a frustrating season for him. Many of the rookie mistakes players make as they adjust to the NBA game are still in front of Derrick simply because of a lack of minutes. There are nights when he’s going to get schooled badly by veterans that live to “educate” young newcomers. But he’s going to grow into his game this season and by the trade deadline he should be a very solid bench asset. A year from now (insert lockout asterisk here) he will have had time to work on holes in his game and learn when to drive and when it’s better to stop and pop from 15.
But in my mind he is still the best hope amongst the Bobcats Pineriders. If he doesn’t end up lumped into a trade, he’s going to be worth a second contract when his rookie deal closes.

I think a Diaw for C or PG is critical
Boris will stink up the place. As long as we have him, LB will want to use a “small ball” lineup, which will more often kill us than help us.
Please, if there’s any stats master out there…can you calculate our stats and effectiveness, on both sides of the ball, for those minutes we used a small ball lineup? Both regular season and post season? I would bet you that our net result was negative.
You could probably just go to 82games and look up the 5 man units
I’m guessing any unit where Boris is the tallest player on the floor could be used as a definition for a small ball lineup.
You want to make sure to see how many actual minutes are played for each unit though.
From 82games.com
http://www.82games.com/0910/0910CHA2.HTM
Five of the top twenty lineups had either Diaw or Thomas at the “center” position (4,5,6,11, and 14) and some of them were good, some of them bad. It would be really hard to judge going into this season because all but one of these five lineups had Felton and/or Flip Murray involved. The lineup that has all players which are still on the roster happend to be one of the worst lineups used last year. Still, it’s hard to take anything away from this due to the number of minutes each unit was on the floor.
Thanks Stevarino
Indeed, hard to judge based on current unit. I do hope you or someone will track this once the regular season begins, and share the results periodically. I just believe the concept is OK for very short bursts (kind of like the wildcat formation in the NFL) but it is NOT a dependable solution for this team overall.
Gortat!
I believe I read somewhere about Gortat saying he wouldnt mind being traded, alot of analysts say he is a starting caliber C, Dalembert would be nice too, he fits more of larry browns style, long defensive minded.
