Bobcats Ground Rockets 102-94; Cats Shut 'Em Down in the Second Half
The Charlotte Bobcats defeated the Houston Rockets 102-94 at the Cable Box Tuesday night. Stephen Jackson had his best game of the year, scoring 43 points on 22 attempts from the field, and generally acted like the individualistic badass he is.
This was the first game for the Cats in which we saw the Jax who refuses to let his team lose. Maybe it's because he's a native Texan, born in a town about an hour and a half from Houston. Maybe it's because he finally found his groove in the Bobcats' offense, and nobody could stop him, not even Shane Battier and Trevor Ariza. Or maybe it was just an eventuality given his talent ceiling: eventually, he was going to have one night where his talent combined with good luck to make a superstar-caliber game. After all, there's got to be a best game of the season, and this could have been it.
Highlights and lowlights after the jump.
BAD
-- The reason I keep advocating for the rookies to get more playing time has to do with the end game. Giving Gerald Henderson and Derrick Brown DNP-CD again and again may serve present day goals by tightening the rotation and putting the very best players that we've got on the floor. However, we're not fighting for playoff position and a run at a championship banner that will fly forever. We're playing for both this season and to get better for seasons to come. Failing to give real NBA minutes to Henderson and Brown unnecessarily hinders their development and, thus, potentially, the team's future ceiling.
GOOD
-- Stephen Jackson. As noted above, he scored 43 points on 22 attempts. But not only that, he grabbed 8 rebounds, dished 3 assists, got 3 steals, turned it over only 2 times, and made a key save during crunch time on a ball bouncing out of bounds.
-- Boris Diaw is back on the upswing. He scored 19 points on 13 attempts, got 6 assists, and, most shockingly, was active among the big men, scrapping his way to 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. So he turned it over 4 times. That's what he's been doing all season, only this time, he played the all around game we've been waiting to see from our mercurial power forward since May.
-- Houston's right in the middle of the pack at causing turnovers, but Charlotte's in the bottom five at giving up turnovers. The Cats are averaging more than 16 turnovers per game, but even with Diaw and Gerald Wallace turning it over 4 times each, they only totaled 11 for the game.
-- The corollary to the turnovers is that the point guards played an extremely solid game, in sum. Aaron Brooks and Kyle Lowry struggled all night thanks to Raymond Felton and D.J. Augustin both playing excellent on-ball defense. Don't get hung up on the low points and assists totals. The ball was running through Diaw much of the time in the half court, and the rest of the time, Jackson and others were creating their own offense.

+1 we're dying to know.

We didn’t make it to the team shop this time around. Got there just before tip, and normally at games we’ll go early enough to browse before warmups begin. For some reason, she really digs one of the long sleeved blue t-shirts. I’m not really in to the shade of blue the Bobcats use.

A solid choice.
Personally I think you should have gone for the pimed-out Cutlass painted bright orange.

I like the blue
THat’s why I got a De-Morrisoned Jersey…in swingman blue
I need to find me a Nazr jersey per Mr Mann
The one thing that really concerns me about this game is the minutes for the starters
Jackson and Wallace in particular played 40+ minutes, with Jax playing the full 48.
On the season, Wallace is first in the NBA in minutes per game with 41.8. Jackson isn’t far behind with 38.1, tied for 7th in the NBA.
I’m just hoping that Larry Brown’s push to win these close games doesn’t end up tunneling the season because of a later injury or fatigue.

ROOKIES
Henderson and Brown in for Jax and Crash
Why is that so hard for LB?
by andrewlail76 on Jan 12, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions
It doesn't even have to be much
Just 5-10 minutes for Hendo and D Brown will give them a little playing time and at least give Wallace and Jackson some time to catch their breath. Between Wallace and Jackson, you could always keep one of the two in the game at all times. It’s really not too difficult.
As of now, the rest of the world and New Hampshire think Gerald needs some love.

Off topic, but what about this...
The Nets released Sean Williams. I know he’s a pot head and everything, but can’t we sign him to a couple 10 day contracts as a shot blocking big man off the bench. He can play the 4 when we need a big front line.
good idea
I didnt know they released him and he was sick nasty a few years ago. If ricky williams can rush for over 1000 yards this season, we can take a chance on another reefer.
What other famous nba players have ever smoked pot?
Well for one, this guy.

I read on SI that the Nets are shopping Boone as well
He’s making 2 mil and could play that back up 4 spot when we need him. Would also provide a nice defensive presence in the lane(that we’ve been missing w/ Chandler out). I don’t know who we’d trade for him though. The nets are cleaning house so they’re probably more interested in short contracts. The only problem is that I don’t see any contract that New Jersey would want over Boone’s.
Well Charlotte could use Bell's trade exception to get Boone
We could also throw in Graham just for kicks! Trade works with or without Graham in the trade machine.
did you know
that when naming a newborn baby, couples must get Gerald Wallace’s personal consent before they name it “gerald” or “wallace”?

Or G-Force
Yeah! all you who don’t believe, look out in about 20 years. Newspapers’ll be like this:
Today G-Force Reisenheimer breaks ground uptown in a new condominium construction….
Yesterday G-Force O’Flannigan was arrested for drunken and disorderly conduct…

Stephen Jackson
If you want to see more career numbers from him, assign a ginger to defend him. After watching the highlights, I noticed a lot of his shots were in buddingers eye. No ging can guard jackson. end of story.
True.
One time Luke Schenscher tried guarding him. Jackson went for 81. Or maybe that was Kobe. Doesn’t matter.

Lock down D
As bad as Ray and Gerald played on Offense they made a huge impact on the game Deffensivly. The Rockets could not even get the ball to the rim in the 4th quarter. The last 2 games through 3 quarters we looked awful. In the 4th quarter of both games we turned on a switch and played shut down D. Pulling out these kind of games is a sign of a good Playoff team. 2 of our big 3 gave us nothing on Offense and we get a win vs a Playoff team. Other guys our finally stepping up. Im suprised no one is talking about how well Flip is playing, he has been huge for us and efficient to. I think we may have the Best Deffensive backcourt in the league with Felton Wallace and Jackson. I think they could all make the All NBA deffensive teams. What do you guys think?
Yeah, wallace on the first team
Also, Ive noticed we have started to make our runs when LB goes to his small lineup. Last night, it was with felton, murray, jackson, wallace, and Diaw. Diaw seems to play better at this lineup also.
+1
I’ll say it again…
I want to see the small lineup with Brown and Henderson in the mix…
just saying it so if LB and MJ read it…

Does anyone have espn insider? Mighty Bobcats
Theres a hollinger article at the front of the nba section espn.com on the bobcats. You have to be a insider to read it though. The headline says “Is it time to mention the Charlotte Bobcats in the same breath as the Lakers, Cavs, C’s and Magic? Yes and no.”
I wish I could read the article.
I got it. it's pretty good
I think it’s probably frowned upon by espn to just post it on a public thread so I’ll email you some info (that’s vague enough)

Awesome...Thanks a lot
Larry Brown does deserve to be in coach of the year talks once we get above .500. Thats crazy that we are in the top 5 defense with LA, Orl, Cleve, and Boston(especially without are defensive center). I love watching this team right now. Even if we dont make a trade for a real power forward, we still can win some games in the playoffs. Also, I hope they make a change and schedule us nationally sometime this year. He says that we arent good for tv because of the turnovers and offensive efficiency but I am thoroughly entertained every game.
Do you think he got blown
for the foul? Or is bagging legal? Does it come down to who initiated contact? If it resutls in a concussion, does the NBA levy a fine? Or is it just a strong foul – you know, 2 and the ball.

Stephen Jackson's 43
It was nice to see Stephen Jackson have a Glen Rice type night.
After Glen Rice warmed up the first two months of the season, he really took off. From Dec. 30, 1996, to the end of the season (54 games), Rice scored 40 or more points in seven games, 33-39 points in fifteen games, and only scored below 20 points in four games. He averaged nearly 30 points per game during this span.
Jackson’s 43 was a franchise record. It was also a career high for Jackson.
