Gameday Preview Charlotte Bobcats vs. Houston Rockets

Pump Up Music: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones -- "The Impression That I Get"

The Big Picture: The Houston Rockets are unlike any other team in the NBA. The best description I've read of them, and please forgive me for being unable to find where I read it, is that they're a supercharged version of those old guys at the Y who have played together for fifteen years and play waaaaaaaay better than they look.

Star-divide

Put it this way: Without an All Star, they're looking at a playoff run, and if Daryl Morey can pull a miracle and add someone like Chris Bosh on a rental basis, they instantly become dark horse title contenders. Of course, the danger in building a team this way is that adding a superstar as the final piece could blow the whole thing to smithereens by disrupting all that lovely harmonious trust. Yao Ming is perfect for them because he's extremely unselfish, yet takes the team on his back when appropriate, and still within the framework of what the team is trying to do, generally. When Yao decides to take over, it's not at the expense of guys like Aaron Brooks, but because they need him.

Just take a gander at their roster. They've consistently played nine guys all season, and they've started the same lineup 36 of 37 games. Chase Budinger brings up the rear in minutes played among those nine, with 534, and the next most minutes played is Jermaine Taylor, who's played 70. For comparison, Nazr Mohammed has played 507 minutes for the Bobcats this season, D.J. Augustin has played 586, and Flip Murray has played 591.

There's a clear plan in place, it appears the entire management team trusts their player evaluations, and this far into the season it looks like they've hit home runs (or at least solid doubles) with Chase Budinger and David Andersen.

Key to Victory: Team defense is paramount against the Rockets. Aaron Brooks is probably the only guy we should be worried about doing something on his own (and you know I'm always anxious about those super quick point guards), but the Rockets don't really iso and go, from what I've seen. Instead, they rely on movement away from the ball to get guys open, and they'll run at a moment's notice. None of them are going to break down Gerald Wallace or Stephen Jackson, and Chuck Hayes isn't going to push anyone around on the offensive block, but they'll chip away and chip away and chip away until they've got a lead and then a win. The Cats have to make sure they're in the correct position to press their individual athletic advantages.

Detail That May Interest .08% of You: Chase Budinger was a superstar volleyball prospect coming out of high school.

Our greatest strength will be our biggest weakness tonight.

The Bobcats play the best head-on defense in the NBA. They specialize in getting set and taking charges, altering shots, and getting hands up in faces. The problem we face with the Rockets is that they play the LB type of offense that’s based on rotational passing and 4-6 ball touches before a shot. They rely on quick passes to the weak side. While several of our players – Jackson, Felton, and DJ in particular handle this just fine, some of our big men are slow to adjust and rotate. I expect Diaw and Nazr to risk some early foul trouble from being a halfstep too slow in the defensive pivots.

The flip side (no pun intended) is that if the Rockets are content to keep the game close and Murray is still playing like he has in the past week or so, we’ll be in a position to take this away in the final minutes. Our new found ability to pull it out at the wire may just serve us well.

If we contain Brooks it will just mean that Scola and Landry will work together and attack us from either side depending on the possession. David is right, TEAM defense is going to be essential and Houston will make us pay every single time an assignment is blown or a Cat is too slow commiting to the double-team.

This is not a team that is very strong at generating turnovers although Aziza can display some very quick hands now and then. If we end up closing in on 20 or more turnovers tonights it will be because of sloppiness on the part of the Bobcats, not the result of tight zone play by the Rockets. A win tonight is going to require concentration and discipline. The Bobcats have shown quite a bit of both in recent weeks. If they do it tonight, they’ll win without too many nail-biting moments. If not – if for example Jax has one of his bad-passing/wild shooting nights – we’re likely to drop it in the closing minutes. This is going to be an interesting test as to whether or not the newly strong Bobcats are for real or if they can be easily shaken out of their swagger.

I actually see this...

As an opportunity to run the rookies…
SERIOUSLY LB

The speed and athletic ability of Brown and Henderson…Rockets have no real size, so I say go “small ball” and out “athletic” them.

Playing ball for 15 years at a church near my house, I know exactly what David is talking about. I can see the guys still, but as the younger guys got a little older, stronger, and wisser, we learned how to play those guys and take the game to them.

We need to do the same to the Rockets…
Let the youngins play

I hope they send Gerald Henderson to the D-League

So I can watch him play. Also, The Mighty Mighty Bostones takes me back to 1995.

Has anyone seen DJ post anyone up?

We may see it tonight. I would love to see DJ post Brooks up on the block and hit him with a Dream Shake. Brooks may be the only guard outside of Earl Boykins that DJ can beast inside. If the Cats’ PGs can contain Brooks’ ability to create, they have a very good chance of winning. Battier is the only offensive weapon Houston has that concerns me.

That phrase is my favorite RoF meme.

Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is.
