Today the Minnesota Timberwolves waived veteran PG Chucky Atkins. Atkins is due $3.5 million this season (the last in his current contract) of which $760,000 needs to be paid by the Timberwolves themself.
Were the Bobcats a few days too early in signing Raymond Felton to the qualifying offer? Felton is due $5.5 million on his qualifying offer, and the main reason for the signing seems to be a desire to have a PG on the roster with more than 1 year experience, and seems to indicate the team's move towards DJ Augustin as PG of the future.
Atkins was made expendable after the T'Wolves signed Ramon Sessions earlier in the month. A 10 year journeyman veteran, Atkins has played most recently for Oklahoma City, Denver and Memphis. Most interestingly however, was his role in Larry Brown's championship Pistons in which he averaged 12 PPG (on 0.432 shooting, 0.384 from three) as well as 3.7 apg while playing second fiddle to Chauncey Billups.
