Bobcats Co-Owner Dies

I have no idea if this affects anything with Bob Johnson's attempts to sell his share of the Bobcats, but William "Skipper" Beck, described in the AP story as a team co-owner, has died in a small plane crash in South Carolina.

Beck was in the news late last year and early this year when he was accused of soliciting prostitution, a charge that was later dismissed.

Beck didn't have the money to become the majority owner...

So I don’t think it will change the big picture ownership transition.

Cirrus R22 aircraft...

The Cirrus R22 aircraft that Beck was flying is one safest top selling single-engine aircrafts in America. They were the first production plane that has a recovery parachute to help save the plane in the case of loss of control or entry into a flat spin. The Cirrus is unrecoverable from a flat spin and the plane can only be saved by pulling the ‘chute. Too many times pilots make poor choices trying to get back to the airport they departed from when something happens to the plane during takeoff. Often they’ll pass up open fields or even highways or some other suitable landing site off-field because they think they can stretch their glide (in the case of losing the engine, for example) and make the departure runway. That’s when the NTSB and the FAA has to come to charred wreckage of a plane that might have been saved had the pilot made a different choice. Especially this plane, since he could have simply slowed the aircraft to under a hundred and thirty five mph and pulled the parachute which, when deployed, may have resulted in a survivable “controlled crash.” Of course we’ll never know for certain since small general aviation airplanes don’t have flight data recorders or cockpit tapes to get information about what may have led to the crash. RIP Mr. Beck…
