Where do we go from here? Judging the Bobcats' aenimic offseason.
This was supposed to be the offseason where we made big strides, added the last few pieces to cement our run into the playoffs. From last year's roster it appeared that we were only a shade away from 8th, especially having a full season with Bell and Diaw. The Charlotte Bobcats didn't have alot of money to play with, but they do have an MLE that could be used to acquire a solid, backup big man to ensure we don't have the drop off in talent when Okafor and Diaw take a breather.
So, where do we stand?
The Bobcats' first target was Antonio McDyess, it was always unlikely McDyess would become a Bobcat. After all, he is in the twilight of his career, and I don't think anyone would blame him for wanting a championship.
McDyess signs with San Antonio Spurs
After we realized that McDyess could not be had, we were connected with Brandon Bass. Bass would have provided youth and energy off the bench at a much needed position. He was my personal favorite on the list of off season aquisitions.
Brandon Bass signs with Orlando Magic
With Bass and McDyess off the board the Bobcats were still looking for help at the much needed backup PF spot. We were connected with Channing Frye being a possible, cheaper alternative.
Channing Frye signs with Phoenix Suns
Here we sit, this morning another perfect player for the Bobcats to pursue is off the market.
Drew Gooden signs with Dallas Mavericks
Gooden would have provided alot of depth off the bench as well as a much needed boost to rebounding with Okafor off the floor.
Thus far, the Bobcats have made no moves. Other than shedding the weight (literally, figuritively and contractually) of Sean May the sole focus seems to have been resigning Raymond Felton, which hasn't been successful thus far. We are now one of only two teams left in consideration for Allen Iverson (the other being the Heat). However, it's not all doom and gloom for the Bobcats aenimic offseason, there are still quite a few solid unrestricted FA's on the market who could come in and contribute. I am putting up a poll of who I believe are the short list for best available talent. I'd love to see who the Bobcat nation think would be a good fit in Charlotte.

Magloire is off the market.
I picked trade Felton in the poll, but out of the FAs, I like Ike Diogu. However, I also like Hakim Warrick, who just got his rights rescinded by the Grizzlies. Both are young and athletic at the 4, and can even slide over to the 5 capably if we go small.

When did Magloire get picked up?
Si.com and ESPN have some ’splaining to do!
I like Warrick alot Diogu too, both could be had for less than the MLE.
/sigh, I wish we got Gooden that match seemed perfect

Rotoworld is often a good place to go for individual player info.

Sign Ike
He has all the talent in the world, just needs some consistant mininutes. Let him backup Wallace and Diaw, he would be a great fit

I chose sign and trade
I really do not know who we could trade for. That would also leave us with a hole at PG too wouldnt it?

Hold on tight!!!
You’re about to see major changes…
Chandler for Okafor?
More will go than just Okafor…and more will come than just Chandler.
Do we sign Ike? Big Baby?
I think we will see Ajinca at courtside with the Okafor move…
Still wondering about the PF…someone will get signed today I bet…

I thought
Brown wanted Chandler to play at PF. Maybe someone can pull the link to the article, but Brown said Okafor was more of a pure center, and that Chandler more of the versatile guy they were looking for. Someone they could use at PF. 7-1 guy at PF? I don’t know.
The only explanation other than the salary dump to me is Brown’s obsession with versatile players like Diaw and Wallace even though I’m not so sure if Chandler’s any more versatile than Okafor.

That can't be possible...
if the plan is to play Chandler at the 4, what does that mean for Diaw? He is too small to play C and any lineup that would put Diop or Nazr on the court and leave Diaw on the bench is a travesty.
Let’s not confuse versatility with intention, because I think there is no way Chandler was brought in if he wasn’t going to play center.

I think the point would be that it provides DEFENSIVE flexibility, in theory...
Brown probably thinks you could play Diop and Chandler in the frontcourt (with Diaw at the 3) against a big frontcourt with a versatile perimeter threat easier than you could have last year with Diop and Okafor. And he’s probably right. But, as the writer below alluded to, that’s not going to be a solution we should be looking at with any regularity. Sounds like Larry’s trying to spin himself on the deal, too.

Some thoughts on that:
Chandler is 7-1, and though he is athletic for a man his size, he is simply not a power forward. He is a prototypical center, period. Perhaps he can guard power forwards in stretches, but can you imagine him on, say, Rashard Lewis, Kevin Garnett, Antawn Jamison, Chris Bosh or any of the other athletic forwards in the East? And how on earth could a team play Chandler at the four position offensively? His shooting range does not extend beyond the dunk. Okafor is not an offensive force himself, and Brown was frustrated by the fact that Okafor averaged just 0.6 assists last year. But Okafor could occasionally shoot from eight or 10 feet. And Chandler averaged 0.5 assists last year.

Diogu is gone, signed by Hornets.
Warrick is likely gone, offered contract by Milwaukee.
And we still stand pat.
