NBA Draft Open Thread
Coverage starts at 7pm on ESPN. I'll be in my abode with the Official Girlfriend of Rufus on Fire, the Official Roommate of Rufus on Fire (a Nets fan), and two Official Coworkers of Rufus on Fire (Kings and Heat), noshing on Villa Francesca pizza while teams fall all over themselves to draft their futures.
MJ, don't fail the Bobcats now.

What would you think of this trade?
It seems clear that the Bobcats need a scoring SG as their primary focus this offseason, and that the Pistons need to shake up their roster. That being said:
Charlotte Bobcats trade Raymond Felton (sign and trade), #12 pick overall to Detroit Pistons for Richard Hamilton, #15 overall
Seems to me this would give the Pistons a PG they have coveted. Gives the Cats the SG and a familiar face for Larry and would allow us to get a solid backup PG for DJ (see Lawson, Paddy Mills etc.)

I'd take that in a heartbeat...
But they turned down a better package from the Celtics.

Done and done. Except that it wouldn’t work under the CBA.

Couldn't there be ways to make it work if the offer was high enough because of BYC?
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 25, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not sure. I think the main problem with BYC is that it essentially prevents you from making a deal with anyone unless both teams are under the cap.

Rumor from Chad Ford is that Jordan wasn’t impressed by Terrence Williams…the guy we apparently promised our 12th pick.
He adds that Jordan likes James Johnson over both Williams and other guard Gerald Henderson.
If we end up with Johnson it better be because we traded down.

I tend to believe that a guy who’s better than everyone else right now will be better in the future, but I’m not confident at all in anyone’s ability to make fine distinctions in present-day talent (Isiah Thomas and Rod Thorn excluded), so I’ve been torn by the notion that this draft is so shallow in talent that the best pick after Griffin/Rubio is the high-upside pick. In other words, a good process would be to take Jordan Hill, to take James Johnson, to take Brandon Jennings, to take Tyreke Evans, to take Jrue Holiday, to perhaps reach a bit on Chase Budinger… to take the guys who are simply super athletes and hope they pan out, instead of taking the guys in this draft who are most skillful at basketball and hoping their skill can overcome their relative lack of athleticism.
by David A. Arnott on Jun 25, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions
While I see what you're saying...
I just don’t like the idea of taking an ‘upside prospect’. For a team like the T’Wolves who seem to be salting the earth and starting again it’s fine to reach with your 2 picks in the 20s but for the Cats I dislike the notion.
We’re not a rebuilding team, we’re one knocking on the door. Which is why I am a big fan of trying to move the pick for a vet. Look at the steal Richard Jefferson was had for, we need to find a team looking to gamble in 2010 and make a move. We took our flying leap on Ajinca last year (who honestly would be a lottery pick if he came out this year), lets do whatever it takes to seal the deal now.
by James The Aussie on Jun 25, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I’d be inclined to agree but if the 5th pick can only fetch Foye (who I like) and Mike Miller then what can we possibly expect to get with the 12th pick. We’re not drafting a player that will be good this year but unless a team falls in love with a guy that is still available I don’t see us trading out of the draft.
Case of the beet bandit. Missing beets from all over the farm, no footprints. Inside job. Mose in socks. Boom. Case closed. -Dwight Schrute
Knocking on what door, though?
The chance to win 38 games, be the #7 or #8 seed, and get swept?
Also, we can’t make a trade like the Spurs did because we don’t have the cap room.
Also, what proof do you have that Ajinca would be a lotto pick? He’s terrible.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 25, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions
If we’re looking at upside prospects there is no doubt in my mind Ajinca would go that high… the kid is still only 20, and had a couple of flashes towards the end of the year. I don’t have any ‘hard proof’ but I feel that wpuld be the case.
The Bell/Diaw move turned us into a team knocking on the door of the playoffs. Without them, we’re sunk. Lets not forget it took the bold move of trading Wright for Richardson that started that ball rolling, and it worked out pretty well.
Baby steps, baby steps…. the biggest opponent Charlotte has right now is the people of Charlotte, we are in desperate need of a playoff series to aide the team’s growth. Unless there is some high drama and a player like DeRozan or Harden falls to us, then I just dont see the value of taking a Gerald Henderson, Johnson or Williams. Especially if a player like Brandon Jennings is available and some team decides to play ‘lets make a deal’.
Fair point about the Spurs. We burned too much of our room on Mohammad.
by James The Aussie on Jun 25, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Flashes of what, exactly?
His best game was 12-4 in 20 minutes of a blowout game. And that came in December. And he played two games from 2/17 on.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 25, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Really?
When I checked, they were something like 12-7. That ain’t good for the 20th pick against a bunch of NBA washouts.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 25, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I was mainly referring to the d-league and that rare ‘blowout’ game. That being said, he’s raw… really raw… it took Dirk Nowitzki a good 3 seasons to do anything and he was a ‘ready to play’ international big man. Ajinca has a similar shooting touch, but it will take him some time. I’m not factoring him into any potential lineup yet, but I have seen flashes of his ability.
by James The Aussie on Jun 25, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Nowitzki also had done something before he got drafted...
He was the German player of the year! Ajinca couldn’t get run on a second-division French league team.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 25, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Precisely my point....
It took the German player of the year three seasons before being able to perform in the NBA. You’re ready to write an inexperienced Ajinca off after his rookie year.
I never said he’s a future superstar, however, I did say he was a very raw prospect with alot of upside who I think would be a lottery pick in this year’s weak draft.
by James The Aussie on Jun 25, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions
But my point was that you had proof he could produce.
Ajinca has shown none of that. Kwame Brown used to have all the upside in the world, remember? And Darko?

Touche sir
Time will tell I guess…. people can mock me for this one too, and maybe it’s because I’m a homer…. but Patty Mills is the second best PG prospect in this draft and he will probably fall to the 2nd round.
by James The Aussie on Jun 25, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I think both Procton and I have been on the Mills bandwagon the whole time. I’d love to move up in the second part of the draft to take him.
Case of the beet bandit. Missing beets from all over the farm, no footprints. Inside job. Mose in socks. Boom. Case closed. -Dwight Schrute
I loves me some Patty Mills, irrationally I might add. Dude can’t really shoot, but if he has Jarrett Jack’s career, I wouldn’t be surprised.
Fun fact: Before Mills went to St. Mary’s, and before I moved to Charlotte, I was the halftime news anchor and board operator for St. Mary’s College basketball broadcasts.
by David A. Arnott on Jun 25, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m glad to see he’s getting some love. When I see Jonny Flynn and Tyreke Evans both going potentially top 10 I ask myself “Could either one of these guys break both Chris Paul’s and Deron Williams’ ankles in the same game? Because Patty Mills did!” I just don’t see how someone with so much potential, upside and international experience could be the 6th or 7th PG taken.

I totally agree....
Johnson had one good with wake…. williams or henderson in that order
Don't believe any rumors you hear this week
I’m not impressed with Williams either so I hope that part is true, but how would Chad Ford know what Jordan thinks? I’m sure Jordan didn’t tell him, and if he did it’s likely to be misinformation.
The suggestion of James Johnson feels like a smokescreen. The last thing the Bobcats need is another tweener forward.
What’s not to like about Williams? He plays awesome defense, he can rebound and he can pass. He’s by no means polished offensively but neither was Ron Artest. That’s who he seems to draw a lot of comparisons too. Though that might be because of his eccentric nature.

What's not to like?
He can’t shoot from anywhere on the floor and shoots bad shots anyway. Further, his BBIQ is not exactly what Brown is looking for.

He’s an athlete. You mentioned yourself the other day that Raja Bell developed into a shooter.
Williams is a better defender, athlete, rebounder and dare I say has more upside than Henderson.
But I think we can both agree that Williams or Henderson is a far superior pick to Johnson. If we’re taking a big I want Blair.
Case of the beet bandit. Missing beets from all over the farm, no footprints. Inside job. Mose in socks. Boom. Case closed. -Dwight Schrute
I don't think Williams is a better defender at all.
And he certainly can’t stick with a scoring PG, which Henderson can and we need with our small PGs.

He’s got a 6’10 3/4 wingspan so he can defend big and I’m betting everything that he’s faster and moves quicker than Henderson.

You've heard of "sources within the organization?"
Some intern in the operations department or anybody else can easily email him after he hears MJ raving about a kid in a pre-draft meeting or even walking down the hall.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 25, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Of course so
But I don’t believe any kind of rumor like that so close to the draft. Anyone within the organization would be undermining his bosses and in danger of losing his job if he pulled that kind of crap – unless he was instructed to spread misinformation. Who knows, but I don’t put much stock in what ESPN says. They’re a bunch of old ladies gossiping at a tea party.
Fun with draft names
My buddy at work loves the idea of going out to clubs and telling girls his name is some NBA player’s… with a slight twist so the sports-inclined don’t get suspicious. For instance, a couple years ago, he would have been telling girls he was Mark Aldridge, Andy Bargnani, Kenny Martin, or Dan Granger.
This year, he’s been talking about Jerry Henderson, Jon Flynn, Jimmy Harden, and—my personal favorite—Steve Kirby. Any others you see?

"the new DeAndre Jordan"
DeAndre Jordan is not a bust. He rebounds, blocks shots, dunks and was a 2nd round steal last season. It’s not his fault that he was overhyped coming out of high school, but in a couple years he could be a very solid center. Maybe BJ Mullens is more accurately described as the new Alex Ajinca?

And now I’m wondering even more about this, with Holiday and Lawson on the board, is Dumars still working on a Rondo deal? I’m not sure why he would talk about Stuckey as less of a PG and more of a combo guard, then go to the draft and pick Daye.

It was lotto this year
Charlotte would retain it if it’s in the top 12 in 2010, top 10 in 2011, top eight in 2012 and top three in 2013. Charlotte would have no protection for the pick in 2014.

Derrick Brown. Meh.
Case of the beet bandit. Missing beets from all over the farm, no footprints. Inside job. Mose in socks. Boom. Case closed. -Dwight Schrute
Derrick Brown is a quiet leader and a dedicated learner...not just a raw talent.
He has a fiery streak, but he’ll have to control and express this to its fullest in order to become a difference maker in the NBA.
He’s pretty mature and comes from a strong system at XU that emphasizes defense and selfless play. His numbers could easily be 20 ppg, but he shared the load with 7 other guys in the rotation.
I don’t know what the Bobcats need, other than getting healthy, but I think Brown can help any NBA team based on his physical and mental makeup.
People are saying he slipped because of 2 things: 1) he takes plays and series off, and he doesn’t use his right off the dribble well yet.
Really, what you’re looking at is a player that totally bought into a system, put the team first, and that’s why he’s pretty good at many things (and getting better believe me, he used to just dunk that’s it) but kind of appears passive or just unpolished. I’d say he’s well rounded but not polished, make sense? haha, whatever, I hope he works out for your team and I’ll definately be rooting for the Bobcats.
PS, please tell MJ to shut up. His Duke jokes were overbearing and lacked tact and consideration. I could just see Larry mopping that situation up. Jordan is a classic narcissist.
Every report I've seen...
Says he can’t score, can’t rebound, and can’t defend. But I hear he’d be a great member of a track & field team.

Says he can’t score (NOT TRUE), can’t rebound (NOT TRUE), and can’t defend (NOT TRUE). But I hear he’d be a great member of a track & field team.
Look, I’m a bengals fan so I know what it’s like to root for a crappy franchise, but Brown is a good value pick in the 2nd round and I think you’ll be happy with his development. I’ll say this, anytime Brown had to improve a part of his game, HE DID.
Freshman year: a highlight reel dunker who needed to rebound more and shoot from mid range
Sophmore year: became a great rebounder and developed a mid range jumper, needed a 3 point shot and off the dribble moves
Junior year: a clutch 3 point shooter with good percentage, better off the dribble (still not great)
By the time of yesterday’s draft Brown has become a well rounded player. Again, if you want eye popping stats you’d have to look at a guy who wasn’t in a 8 man rotation and wasn’t asked to be equally tough rebounding, scoring, defending, and passing.
Brown is working his ass off and he will prove you guys wrong. He’s also got smarts and comes from a good family. I just don’t see how you’d be this disappointed.
OK…here are my problems with the kid: he played 30 MPG over the past two years (which is starter’s minutes, regardless of how many players were in the rotation), but he only managed 6 boards a game. That’s hardly what I’d call “great” rebounding from a PF, particularly when 2 of those were on offense. His FG% fell every year in college, and he turns the ball over a lot for a guy who didn’t see the ball much. I understand he has defensive potential because he’s relatively long and he moves well, but he was never much of a shot-blocker or a guy who racked up many steals. I understand that you think he could develop into a good wing player, but that’s not what we need. As an NBA PF, he’s short, small, and he has no post game. Thus, skills like his developing perimeter shot don’t really help us, because we need frontcourt depth.

From nbadraft.net
Charlotte grabs another stellar college player in UAB’s Robert Vaden. He’s not a flashy guy or a top-flight athlete, but he has outstanding range on his jumper and he can score from anywhere on the floor. He was among the most consistent scorers in college hoops, but might struggle to get his own shot against NBA defenders.
