We offered Ray Felton with a qualifying offer... Now what?

I understand the reason why they offered the qualifying offer to Ray Felton because he did improve under Coach brown's tutelege. He is a good enough point guard but he can be frustrating at times. What's worse, we have DJ and he could be good enough to start ahead of Ray right now.

We could possibly find a solution to the dilemma by possibly trading either Ray or DJ to the Celtics. With Stephon leaving for free agency, and their mikki moore experiment going bust, their bench is in dire need of a bench overhaul. They are so desperate to fill in the holes on the bench that they talked about trading Rondo and Ray Allen for Barbosa and Stoudamire. We could use that to offer a better deal.

If we offered Raja Bell, Nazr Mohammed, DJ,  and Emeka Okafor for Ray Allen and Kendrick Perkins we would be filling our need for a go to scorer and we would not be losing much on defense with Perkins in the middle. We can replace DJ through the draft with a glut of point guards in the draft. At # 12 we can still grab Jrue Holiday, Patty Mills, and even Brandon jennings.

If we roll the dice on DJ we can change the trade and replace DJ with Ray felton and get to Boston to add Tony Allen or Brian Scalabrini. We could also ask for a youth brigade of Giddens, Pruit and Walker.

Its a win-win scenario where Boston would get decent bech production and cap relief when Garnett's contract expires and Bobcats would get the go to scorer we need and resolve our problem with the point guard rotation. We also get rid of the heavy contract of Nazr.

What do you guys think?

A few questions

One, your title seems to suggest that the offer has already been extended. Is that true, or was it a confusing word choice?

Two, would you care to define this “improvement” shown by Felton this season? His rate statistics were almost exactly the same as his career numbers.

Three, do you really think trading three of our top six players for an aging SG who will probably retire within the next couple of years and a mediocre center is a responsible idea?

I like this trade we get a go to 2 guard and we get rid of Naz, and Okafors ugly contracts. Ray Allen a guy who does not need the ball ball in his hand to score is a perfect fit for the Cats. I belive he will be better in charlotte where ball movement is a priority and guys are unselfish. Perkins as well is a good pickup Rebounding and defense and not a bad offensive player as well. Draft Blair at 12 to play backup at 4 and Rebounding will be greatly improved. I like the move to Keep Felton and use DJ in a trade. Felton is a true PG a play maker who gets in the paint and finds guys for open looks. DJ has not shown the abbility to be a play maker. And DJ is a liability on Defense. Having a go to shooter at the 2 in Allen will take pressure off Felton to make all the plays at the end of games. Yes Procton Allen is a aging SG but with 2 years on his contract and getting rid of Naz and Okafors contracts will bring big future Cap Relief without sacrificing the next 2 seasons.

Okafor does NOT have an "ugly" contract

He is paid the going rate for NBA big men. There is nobody paid any less who’s any better not on a rookie contract.

Also, if Felton “is a true PG a play maker who gets in the paint and finds guys for open looks,” why is it he’s led the team in shots taken despite his atrocious FG% in th elast three years.

Yeah I’m baffled by the assertion that Okafor’s contract is ugly.

I am not saying Okafor's contract is ugly but Nazr's sure is.

Okafor’s contract is really long though and with the franchise on the brink of bankruptcy, long and larger than average contracts could be the final holes to sink the ship. We have several contracts that go long term, Diop, Nazr, Vlad Rad, and Diaw.

I like Okafor but he and DJ/Felton are the only leverage we have for trading. The only other players that other teams would be interested in are Gerald Wallace and Diaw. I don’t know about you but I feel Crash and Diaw are more vital to the team than Okafor. This is especially true if we can get Perk to replace Okafor’s production.

As for Felton, like you, I prefer DJ over Felton but Larry Brown is obviously enamored by him. That is why I placed two scenarios involving both of the players. I don’t think anybody would be willing to give up a young effective center and an expiring contract/HOF for Ray, Bell and Okafor and that is why I think trading DJ would be the better option among the two.

You would have to agree that if there is any draft that we can effectively replace DJ or Felton, its going to be this draft, with its deep collection of good guards. DJ is great but I keep hearing David Arnott’s tirade about peaking as “Damon Stoudamire” whenever I see him play.

Now, as for Ray Allen, I really do think he is the solution because he answers both of the problems when it comes to the bobcats, the need for a “goto scorer” and cap relief. Once his contract expires I don’t expect him to demand a max contract. Should he want a large contract we can instead get proven shooters with average defense in Mike miller, Roger Mason and Anthony Morrow. With the cap space available after the trade we can procure two of them. We can also go for above average defense and average offense players in Thabo Sefolosha, Trenton Hassell and Yakhouba Diawara. Perk is not mediocre and is a lot younger than Okafor.

The only question though, is Boston willing to let go of Perk. I hear the Celtics nation is pretty loyal to Baby shaq. I already know that they are ready to let Ray go if the right trade comes.

"I keep hearing David Arnott’s tirade about peaking as "Damon Stoudamire" whenever I see him play."

Stoudamire was better than Felton.

And there’s a reason Boston is willing to let Allen go. He’s an old player, and he’s likely to decline hard very soon.

Amen. Allen's decline has been in progress for years

Allen looks good with KG, Pierce and Rondo, but I don’t think he’s more than a minor upgrade over Bell. Used as a primary scorer, he would look washed up in a hurry. He’s completely the wrong kind of player for the Bobcats to pursue, especially at the expense of Okafor, their 2nd best player. This deal would sink the Bobcats to the depths of the Eastern Conference again.

He was also handled pretty well on defense by...

JJ Redick…eew. (And I’m a Duke fan exceptionally proud of his defense throughout the playoffs on guys like Allen and Kobe.)

Trading Augustin is a step back. If you want to trade Felton, Mohammed, and Okafor (and I love Okafor) for Allen and Perkins, while it might make sense for one year, I don’t think it lines up with long term priorities for either team. Boston’s better off just letting Allen expire. We’re better off keeping Okafor as our defensive rock in the middle. Getting rid of Mohammed would be nice, but not at the expense of Okafor.

Yes, Augustin is a step back

But, I don’t see people knocking down doors for Felton. DJ is a prospect that should intrigue other GMs, though. If we are going to let DJ go, this draft is our best chance of replacing him.

As for the direction, the franchise is losing money fast and it is important to get out of some of the bad contracts on the team (I’m not saying Okafor has a bad contract), otherwise we could see the bobcats suiting up as the sonics. We also need to win now to attract fans but I don’t see it happening with Bell as our primary perimeter guy.

The trade makes sense for Boston because they are desperate for bench help. Bell keeps them competitive defensively and the bench push should be good enough to keep them on the hunt for a championship for the next two years.

They also want to stay competitive after Peirce and KG are done. I already hear Celtics fans talk about another possible playoff drought like the one in the 90’s and early 2000. With Okafor and DJ coming in and Rondo blossoming that should hedge them from that future.

As for Okafor, yes he is a good defensive center but so is Perk. He may not be a vertical player but he plays great positional defense. He may not be a great shot blocker but he affects shots down low just by being there. We saw that in the Lakers Finals when he slapped around Gasol. Lets not forget the great job he did with Dwight(although the Lakers did a better Job on him as a team). Plus, he is two years younger than Okafor.

Great Blog by the way

The Sonics were on the road to builiding a good team within the next five years.

Look at all the young talent OKC has now.
