Prospecticon Says: Gerald Henderson

*Rubs eyes*

The NBA draft is on June 25? Dude. That's in less than two months. I guess we'd better crank up the Prospecticon 8000 and start looking at guys we might draft...

The knock on Gerald Henderson is that he wasn't an elite offensive player in college. When thinking about how he might contribute to an NBA team, he's defense-first, and whichever team gets him better hope his superior athleticism translates into NBA production in a way Coach K couldn't coax out of him.

I think I'm paraphrasing FreeDarko, but I can't find it: Henderson might be another data point used to show that the college game is simply a different beast than the pro game. Russell Westbrook didn't really produce like a top five pick when he was at UCLA, but his ridiculous athleticism was undeniable, and he's a good enough point guard to play the role for OKC. To me, that sounds a lot like what Henderson was doing in Durham.

Henderson projects as a two who can swing to the three in the pros, but in college, he was asked to do a lot of things associated with fours. On the Point-Swing-Big spectrum, I think he'll look a lot like Vince Carter, but shifted to the Big side of Swing.

Off the top of my head, the absolute ceiling for him is Andre Iguodala, the floor is Joey Graham, and the middle, at least to start, is something like Desmond Mason.

You think he's better or worse than what I'm giving him credit for here?

This seems relatively accurate.

Though he has shown flashes of a sweet shooting stroke, which I could see him developing further than he did this year. I’d say he’s kind of an old school shooting guard: nice mid-range jumper, solid D, and a fair amount of speed/strength.

Might work

As a UNC student, I would find it tough/ironic/funny to find myself cheering for Gerald as a Bobcats fan. But that’s how it works sometimes.

I don’t think he would be a bad choice. I’d have to say your assessment of Gerald is about right. I’m just not sure if he would be the absolute BEST pick for us. But as I say, I would not be frustrated if he was.

Keep the Prospecticon 8000 rolling! I’m interested to see what else you have to say about potential picks.

So he has declared for the draft?

I just missed it if he did. Did he hire an agent?

As a Tarheel fan, its tough to admit, but i always liked the way he played. I always thought he was the type of player that would have thrived in Carolina’s system. I think he has the skills to make a good pro. But then again, im not an NBA scout.

He's declared, no agent yet.

but most people think that’s just a formality at this point. He’s 1st round almost no matter what, probably lottery. I think he stays in. As a Duke fan I thank you for your honesty. I have always felt the same way about Ty Lawson, hate him during the season, secretly loved his game.

I also would like to see more prospecting!

Of course we’ll know more after the lottery. A dream scenario is for us to get high enough to take Harden.

I think Harden is a bit overrated...

to me he looks like a shorter, slower, and less athletic Paul Pierce. And no, that’s not a good thing.

Can not deny his athleticism and defense

To me it seemed that he was held back somewhat by the way Duke played. At times he could take over for short periods and just get taken away by the rest of the offense.

Plus Henderson is a highlight reel dunk or block waiting to happen at any second. As a State guy I would have not problem with the Bobcats taking Gerald, well a little but I would just selectively forget that he played and Duke.

Bad spellers of the world untie.
