Let's Push Gerald Wallace Into the All Star Game

What more is there to say about Gerald Wallace? We're at about the 1/4 point of the season, and he's making a push to be the Bobcats' first All Star selection.

16 pts, 12 reb per game. 7 FTA. Trusted to be a defensive stopper every night. The crappy thing is that if the Bobcats fade out of the playoff race by the time All Star selections are made, that might be the worst thing possible for his chances at making the game.

But right now, after LeBron James and Chris Bosh, which Eastern Conference forwards deserve to make it ahead of him? Andre Iguodala is a guard, but if he's labeled a forward, that could push Wallace out. Maybe Josh Smith? Garnett and Pierce have shown signs of dropping off. Danny Granger just went out for over a month with an injury.

He's on his way. Any ideas for how we can spread the word about the greatness we see every night?

UPDATE: Rick Bonnell is thinking about Wallace and the ASG, too...

Since the NBA allows us to stuff the ballot box

I think that’s the first place to start. (I know that’s stating the obvious but any of us that aren’t already voting every chance we get should be ashamed) I have several friends that take are voting early and often. As you already suggested, someone can put together a video.
What’s stopping us from starting up a website, posting some links to highlight moments, tracking his accolades – like Eastern Conference Player of the Week – and encouraging people to vote?

I think he’s pretty much a shoe-in to make the team’s 2nd unit and with a concerted push, we may be able to make him a starter. He’s starting to make some serious waves around the league with his play and a site dedicated to campaigning for votes for him would also quite possibly get some free play from the broadcast team on the air as well.

He'll never be a starter.

Starters are always name guys from big markets who have national appeal. Gerald has zero of the three.

Remember when the Panthers had a good offensive line? Yeah, me too.

He's Deserving

But we all know how this works. First 2 forward spots to fan voting (no way he beats out Bosh, LeBron, Garnett, Pierce nationally). After that it’s the coaches. They base it way too much on team record. Any of those 4 get voted in by fans, then the other 2 get picked because coaches are creatures of habit and value win-loss over production (see: Mo Williams last year). By that same logic, with Atlanta playing the way they are Josh Smith gets in. If Rashard Lewis hadn’t been suspended for 10 games, he would get in on this basis (“A team with that record HAS to have more than 1 all-star”).

Not trying to be a downer, but I’ve been thinking about this since last night, trying to figure out a way to get him in based on the broken system being used right now. Our best chance at getting him in is to win. If we can be playing .500+ ball by the time selections are made, it’s possible. Fingers crossed. But this one is up to the coaches, not voting. Bobcats are just too disrespected by the general public.

All valid points drapht

Which is why we need to try all the harder.
It will certainly help the cause if the team is still hovering around .500 when the decisions are made and I think, barring injury, the existing team can pull that off. If, as many of us suspect, another trade is in the wind there is a fighting chance we may even be above .500

So it comes down to what we can do. The coaches do indeed have the final say on the second team. But if Wallace has an impressive showing from the fan votes it WILL be noticed. There are two steps to succeeding at this and getting Crash’s name in front of the Eastern Conf coaches is the first one. Other things we can do apart from websites, YouTube videos and such that have already been mentioned should be done with the goal of getting Wallace’s name in front of the decision makers. A couple of suggestions:

1. Keep an eye on the websites of the newspapers in the East Conf cities. Any time one of the coaches in interviewed or a sportswriter does an article about the AllStar game post a link here and we can all go, log in, and comment about Crash mentioning his numbers and worthiness. The coaches and players read that ink a lot of the time.

2. Each time the Bobcats defeat an inner-conference team, go to their paper’s site the next day and make a comment in the recap like this:

“Last night Gerald Wallace scored XX points and had XX rebounds against you last night. If those numbers hurt your team then please consider him for the Eastern Conference AllStar team.”

3. ANY time you attend a Bobcats game from here on out – even if you’re in the nosebleeds – make and bring several “WALLACE FOR ALL STAR!” and “WALLACE IS AN ALL STAR” signs in bright red letters. Hand them out to the people sitting around you – I’m willing to bet you won’t have any trouble finding takers. And HOLD THOSE SUCKERS UP! They’ll get seen and wind up on the broadcast, wind up on the big center court screen, and I guarantee that the more of them there are at the games the more the opposing coach is going to notice. If a sea of those signs go up every time Crash scores or if a dozen of them are waving behind the glass every time an opposing player goes to the stripe it’s going to make news.

None of these things alone will be enough, but collectively they could get him a couple of votes from the coaches and that may be enough to turn the tide.

Even if it doesn’t work, you can bet that Gerald himself will notice and feel the love. It’s the very least we can do for him.

Wallace is getting notice.

I work with two guys from New Hampshire, both are die hard Celtics fans and know nothing about the Bobcats other than box scores.

When they come to be independently and say ‘I had no idea Wallace was leading the league in rebounds’ it makes you realize people are slowly taking notice.

It’ll be a long road, but you better bet Larry Brown is an influence too… and he has a lot of connections in the coaching ranks when it comes to those coaches votes. George Karl and Pop both come into mind immediately.

I thought I saw him looking for Carmelo immediately after the game, but Carmelo dogded him

It struck me as a sign of disrespect from an already star. But I have no proof, could be completely off on that.

I noticed that too...

Gerald swam through everyone and never got to Carmelo…

I like the sign idea, but..

I made a “We Have The Best Wallace” sign a few years ago when Rasheed and Ben were on the Pistons together a few years ago. It was a horrible blowout and Gerald had one point for the night. Dang

It's the G-Force that unites us!

No matter how heated things get on the Felton/Augustin front, I think we can all agree that Wallace is the man! Next time things get heated… just take a deep breath… and let the G-Force do it’s thing.

Now that I got that out...

Does anyone else think Wallace’s jump shot looks a little unorthodox?

Just a little...

He’s right up there with Shawn Marion, Kevin Martin (very similar actually), and Joakhim Noah when it comes to bizarre jump shots.

by drapht00 on Dec 10, 2009 2:07 AM EST up reply actions

Joakhim Noah just has a bad jump shot

On ESPN they said he actually puts a side spin on the ball, which often causes it to spin out of the basket.

by southtunnel on Dec 10, 2009 10:51 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

You need ESPN to tell you that?

Marion essentially shoots a set, 2 handed shot, doesn’t extend his arms and doesn’t follow through which makes it very inconsistent.

Both Gerald Wallace and Kevin Martin swing the ball up from their knees and then shoot it from then release the ball from the top of their head. This prevents having the proper amount of arc (his shot is VERY flat) which makes it more likely to hit the front of the rim or bounce off the back of the rim. It’s bad.

As it drops out of the bottom of the net

I think everyone ELSE’S must be the unorthodox ones.

Wallace getting the #1 play on SC Top10 was definitely helpful in getting his name out there.

That highlight of Gerald Wallace throwing it down was probably the first/most exposure many sports fans have had with him. So maybe if other NBA teams’ fans think about Wallace, they will think bad ass things.

However, Derrick Brown’s steal and reverse windmill was the most bad ass dunk of that night (maybe this whole season).
