Open Gameday Preview/Thread: Charlotte Bobcats at Indiana Pacers

Charlotte Bobcats at Indiana Pacers, Dec 16, 2009 7:00 PM EST

(Programming note: Sorry about not posting this earlier. Unforeseen circumstances kept me from posting. This is the preview and the Open Gameday Thread.)

Pump Up Music: John Mellencamp -- "Authority Song"

The Big Picture: Danny Granger is out with an injury, so the Pacers' primary scoring options are Mike Dunleavy (ouch), Dahntay Jones (really?), and Troy Murphy (better at rebounding and stretching the D than actually being the focal point of the offense). I like Roy Hibbert as a starting center of the future a lot more than other people I know, but right now, he's still figuring things out.

Indiana's future is murky, especially since Tyler Hansbrough's plummeted back to earth after a surprisingly effective start (39% from the field on the season, but still rebounding well and getting to the line more than anyone on the team!), but they can only hope for so much success without Granger. They've lost 11 of their past 14 games.

Star-divide

Key to Victory: Granger's absence puts more of a defensive load on Jones, who will probably spend most of his time matched up on Stephen Jackson, while Dunleavy will be assigned to do battle with Gerald Wallace. I love this matchup for the Cats. With no Granger to push Gerald or Jax on both sides of the ball, none of our guys will be attacked down on a full court basis -- unless Jones goes off on offense, which is unlikely with S-Jax the defensive pitbull on him.

Detail That May Interest 100% of You: Rock Star Games was going to base its next Grand Theft Auto protagonist on Gerald Wallace, but decided against it after determining it would make the game too easy.

Is the game televised? What station?

HA!

i love that GTA fact. really nice.

as for the game, i fully expect the Bobcats to run up the score tonight. even on the second leg of a two-nighter.
there’s no REALISTIC way the Pacers can keep up with our Offense without Granger. he was their foundation, glue, and shelter. our D should really shine against this languid offense without it’s spark.

HOWEVER, i am aware that this is the Charlotte Bobcats im talking about, so expect the unexpected.

I too was busy today and couldn't my regular blog hunting

But I’m going to continue to carp a little bit on one thing.

I’m watching the pregame show and gee whiz, they just happened to do a special feature on how much Raymond Felton does in the community. I think it’s great that he does these things and it’s definitely worthy of recognition. But there isn’t a person on this blog that’s going to convince me there isn’t a definite effort being made to talk up Felton’s importance to both the team AND the community. Now they’re crediting Felton for Boris Diaw’s great 4th quarter. I’m telling you, this is how it’s done. It’s right out of the marketing textbooks. They are selling Felton like Pizza Hut’s Wing Street. His new contract is in the bag and they’re prepping the public to think the numbers are a bargain.

Bank on it.

Is this the Whitest team vs the Blackest team?

Are the Cats the only team without a white player?

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 8:11 PM EST reply actions

You gotta understand

Larry Bird is known for his “minority” hiring. ’Course, being the NBA that means Indiana is always one of the “lightest” teams in the world. The Swedish National team has more black players than the Pacers in recent years.

Call the papers and stop the presses!

Augustin got an assist! The means his line isn’t all zeros!
Did anyone else see Deej cut wide open to the basket while Jax held the ball and just watched him? I know BROWN saw it because 3 seconds later Deej was back on the bench getting serenaded by LB.

Boris Diaw

1 assist, 2 fouls, 2 turnovers…Great half

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 8:16 PM EST reply actions

Hes playing soo shitty as of late...

I just hope we dont trade him for Eddy Curry…we better get someone like Al Harrington in return..

I like the trade idea that was mentioned in other post…Dj, Graham and Diaw for Harrington and Hill…hopefully getting rid of Graham will create some PT for Henderson

by jay23 on Dec 16, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

That sounds good to me too

but Ive heard Curry rumors last year and this year. I dont know what they would see in him.

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

LB again with his fouls

Raymond only played 11 minutes the first half w/ two fouls. Our bench is pretty bad. We need some scoring and we dont get it when chandler is not in foul trouble because then Nazr doesnt play.

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 8:18 PM EST reply actions

Felton's hurting

I don’t think it was the fouls. LB has a couple of pet project players that he’ll leave on the court with a pair of fouls – most notably Graham and Felton. I think he’s resting Raymond because he doesn’t want to face the disaster of Raymond hurting himself even worse.

On the other hand, you and I have a better chance of getting quality minutes for the Cats than Henderson and Law. At this point I’m wondering if LB even let’s Acie suit up for practices! I guess on the plus side it saves money for the team because the laundry bill for Law’s uniforms thus far has to come in at about a buck and a quarter.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Oh ok

If thats the case, we might be in store for another tough half. Augustin and Murray combined 0 for 8.
I have been watching off and on due to the crappy streaming situatuion so i looked at the boxscore and assumed it was foul trouble.

Also, I just checked NBA.com and the cats are leading the league in turnovers per game.

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

0 for 8?

Wow, I’m shocked. SHOCKED I say.
That’s okay. Murray will sink a 3-pointer in the 4th quarter and Martin will hail him as the hero of the game like he did last night.

You know guys, it isn’t just that there are areas where the Felines are bad. There are too many players on this team that are utterly worthless.

It isn’t just that 3 guys are carrying the bulk of the load. It’s that the bench is cluttered with people that aren’t fit to carry a bag of feathers.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Bonnell also claimed Murray as the star of the game on Tuesday.

Im getting tired of seeing Diaw

He just looks lazy out there. We all know what he can do and hes not trying. Is he sad because Bell left? We have got to fill this hole at PF quick.

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions

VERY serious questions

As I’ve already admitted in early convos with Procton, I’m a soccer coach. While there are a lot of commonalities involved, they are very different sports and sometimes I don’t know my butt from a hole in the ground when it comes to coaching hoops. But this seems like a no-brainer.

Felton rolled his ankle last night, got on a plane where it had a lovely opportunity to swell up, and then ran in a shootaround this afternoon. The fact that he’s playing in pain is obvious. The fact that Augustin is as useful as boobs on a bull lately is just as obvious.
Here’s my question…

WHY IS ACIE LAW INACTIVE TONIGHT? Wouldn’t this be the golden time for him to get some minutes? He IS the only other real point guard on the team isn’t he? Why the (insert your favorite expletive or 20 here) didn’t LB just DNP-CD Graham instead? Why???

Oh, and while I’m asking silly questions, considering that Tyson played some heavy minutes last night, why the hell aren’t we using Nazr and exploiting the injuries/weaknesses in the middle? Wouldn’t this also be the game to go HUGE up front? If LB wants to give Chandler minutes because he played the hell out of the first half, that’s fine. But what’s wrong with a Nazr, Chandler, Wallace frontcourt? I know we’ll sacrifice some speed in transition and our inside defense won’t be our best, but Indiana is throwing so many 3-point bombs our inside paint defense isn’t as critical is it?

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply actions

I agree, we need some Nazr

I would like to try that lineup with Nazr on Hibbert and Chandler on Murphy. Also, your two points yesterday. Free throws and Turnovers. FT-69.2%, missed 8. Turnovers 12. There are the reasons we are losing right now. Why do we turn the ball over 20 something times every night? Its friggin rediculous.

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

We turn the ball over a lot because we don't have a PG we can trust to competently and efficiently run the offense.

Because of that, the job has to be shared with some inferior ballhandlers/passers.

Law’s gotten about 1500 minutes in his career. Augustin got more than 1900 just last year.

Box Score Observations...

cant watch the game (link went out), and so ive resorted to watchng the box score.

at this point in time, the Cats are down 68-79 in the 3rd.
1) DJ, where art thou? 0-4 fg (0-2 from 3 range). what happened over the summer? did LB say something? its cool you got 4 assists, but man, what happened to the 18 you were good for a night?

2) the Pacers are keeping Gerald off the boards. he only has 6 up to this point. they ARENT; however, doing a good job at containing him and Jackson on D. Gerald is good for 17 and Jax for 20 as of now.

3) Tyson Chanlder?? YOU got a double double?? is Bigfoot’s number in your phone?

4) too many turnovers. 16 total, Gerald is the leading culprit with 5, followed by Jackson with 4.

5) NO evidence of a bench whatsoever. Nazr (who has been reliable in the past weeks) is getting little minuets, yet he DOES have 2 points. PLAY HIM MORE!! aside from Nazr, Graham is playing. thats it. those are the only two bench players that have played and scored (6 points too). i know we have other players right???

so im imagining that the score is getting ran up by the Pacers due to poor ball movement. wish i could watch and accurately analyze.

oh hey, DJ hit a three!!!

by StudMuffin15 on Dec 16, 2009 8:56 PM EST reply actions

You have a pretty good handle on it.

I certainly isn’t helping that Felton is barely playing because of a bum ankle. Oh, and the box score line won’t show you the fact that the Pacers (in particular Hanesbrough) have hit Wallace in the mouth and nose at least 5 times tonight. Elbows and shoulders in the face every time Wallace enters the paint. So far it’s just pissing him off.

wtf

Now theyre tripping him! Stephen Jackson…whip some ass!

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 9:06 PM EST reply actions

I've not ever said this about ANY team here before

These jaggoffs are deliberately gunning for Wallace. They’re trying to injure him. The only time he hasn’t been hit and hit hard is when he’s shot from out at the 3-point line.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 9:10 PM EST reply actions

It really does look like that

I think they read all his facts and are jealous.

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

So Deej hasn't scored six point in a game since 11/6

Has he scored six point TOTAL between then and tonight?
Watch – if we win this game they’ll point to Augustin as one of the key reasons because with 8 or 10 or however many points he finishes with it’ll mean he’s “broken” out of his slump.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 9:12 PM EST reply actions

Yea. A DJ Revival?

i doubt it, but it certainly is nice to see him step his current crappy game up in the absence of Raymond (if you want to say absence. i wont know).
so far, 6 points and 5 assists. i know his assist total hasnt been that high this season. so what if maybe, MAYYYBEEEE this opens up his confidence and he somehow goes back to the DJ he was last year? where does that put us? would we still look to move him? and what about raymond’s contract?

by StudMuffin15 on Dec 16, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

That's what hurts the most.

There was a time – just last season in fact – where we could have counted on Deej for at least 15 points with the minutes he’s getting tonight.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

o yea

couldnt agree more. imagine, we would have at least 3 more wins if he was able to produce like that agin. it gives raymond a rest, and we know we wouldnt miss a beat by taking him out either.

by StudMuffin15 on Dec 16, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Actually...

Augustin had reached 5 assists twice already this year before tonight. He’s averaging 4.2 when he gets 20+ minutes. Tough to get a feel for the game and your teammates when you never get to play more than three or four minutes in a row, usually with our shitty bench.

commenting and b!tching about the terrible Bobcats TV deal and hoping for something so much better is like actually finding the lost city of El Dorado.

The deal is downright pathetic, and no, I don’t get tired about complaining about it—that’s how bad it is.

by Roger, Roger on Dec 16, 2009 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

This is one of those games that kind of hurts to watch

The Cats are obviously exhausted, still playing their hearts out, and still in the game. They shouldn’t have to work this hard to stay in it.
Plus, I can’t remember seeing a team play as dirty as the Pacers have tonight. Hansboro just threw an elbow into Jackson’s face. I was AT the Celtics game and even the green machine – known for bullying of late – didn’t play this nasty.

agreed. i didnt think we were in dire need of new unis in the first place, but the blue probably should have been there as the primary road jersey all along.
now that they’ve faded the orange, we have lost any shot at originality. blue has taken over the sports world (look at what the florida panthers did for new alternates. just terrible) and you rarely see a NICE black uni anymore (SAC Kings circa Chris Webber)

Diaw as our starting power forward is inexcusable

Everyone join me in a prayer that my prediction of a trade before we got to the Apple on Sunday is right.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

wait

i know everybody is quick to throw Diaw under the bus (so am i. cant lie), but we cant just go around and trade a player every time they begin to slip up.
main reasons:
1) it kills a small market team. just think about it, this team has no idenity because players are moving. you cant affiliate yourself with the team. you cant go to the store and buy a jersey because you never know when that player may leave

2) it kills chemistry. case in point: Diaw POST Jackson trade. prior to that trade, Diaw was always nearing a tripple double, but wether it was team chemistry or just the role changes, something happened.

3) you never know what will happen. prime example in Shannon Brown. look at him in LA now. he even has a ring. Ryan Hollins was STARTING for the MAVS in the PLAYOFFS last year. im just saying, you trade Diaw now, he drops 35 on you later.

consider that.

by StudMuffin15 on Dec 16, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

Points taken

But Diaw is leaving and it’s more to do with the money he gets paid than his level of play.
Even having said that, we need better. We’re trading to fill HIS spot. Brown has said it, Rick Bonnell at the Observer has said we’re shopping for that spot, and the NBA rumor sites are reporting that Augustin and Diaw are being actively shopped for a big to play C and PF.

I agree with your points, but why would anyone be buying gear right now with a number other than 1, 3, or 20 on it anyway? I’d say Felton’s re-signing is almost a certainty.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

i dont rely on those rumor sites

mostly because of the NUMEROUS rumors on there. just dont know what to trust.

i have heard (and subcounciously known) that weve needed a backup/TRUE PF or C. and we got the C in Chandler now (no pun intended), and Diaw would be nice to keep only because of how he can stretch the D. but hes just simply not as big, mean, or powerful to bang with PFs like Garnett.
i could see a trade happening, but i just hope we actually get the larger half of the stick this time without worrying about what we just gave up.

Almost a certainty?

How do you figure? They gave him a deal that was above market value, and he didn’t take it. He might end up back here, sure, but I’d say it’s far from certain.

It does suck about the jerseys

I got an Okafor last year thinking they would never trade him. I still wear it but it sucks. I really want a Wallace jersey. The thing is, the cats have to fill the hole down low or we are gonna keep losing. Once we get a team that is a contender, there wont be that many trades but until then, it is necessary.

agree

i got a wallace jersey (crappy replica—screen printed) but it’s from the season he went into free-agency. so its outdated.

mine is replica too...on sale for 20 bucks last year.

No way im paying for authentic. Ill let someone buy it for me as a gift though.

wouldnt mind copping a old school orange jersey. and every time i put that jersey on, i feel like i can jump 3 feet higher hahaha

Hey,

You can get Adam Morisson gear DIRT cheap at NBA.com as long as you want it in Bobcat Orange!

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

why

would i even let the credit card people see that transaction? hahah!
ill try to get a swingman Wallace in the new home uniform though.

by StudMuffin15 on Dec 16, 2009 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

I got a Morrison...

Swingman Blue…cheap on eBay right before they traded him. I took the letters off…

smart

i vote you into running our front office then

by StudMuffin15 on Dec 17, 2009 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

LOL

I bought it when I thought the knee looked good and he wasn’t going anywhere.

Really stupid of me to buy anyone’s jersey.
Until we have “the man” that will be the team cornerstone…other than a Wallace jersey…look to remove the name from the back of whatever you buy…

by andrewlail76 on Dec 17, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps

We just go to jerses with no name on the back of them.

by andrewlail76 on Dec 17, 2009 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

That's what I bought

a generic Charlotte jersey and a “property of” tshirt.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 17, 2009 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

safest move

any Bobcats fan could make…

Yeah, my first purchase was an Okafor.

But I’ve since gotten a G-Force original third .

Keep Felton, Wallace, Jackson

Trade the rest of the team for a decent pf and center and three bench players that can put up at least 8 pts a night. LB is only gonna use 8 players anyways.

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

your forgetting...

D Brown for sure and Henderson.
id also just keep Nazr for his expiring contract next year and for his revival.

by StudMuffin15 on Dec 16, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, im exaggerating because of the lack of help they have received lately

But i forgot some can contribute but Brown chooses not to use them.

Martin kept saying this game was the tiebreaker

for the end of the season. We don’t play them again until mid-March

Gentlemen...

And most of the rest of us including me….

This game was more fun to watch for having chatted and joked and groaned with you tonight.

Mr Mann, Roger, Stud, etc. – thanks for hangin’ out.

by Ourdaywillcome on Dec 16, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions

Yes sir, you too

hard loss but enjoyed the chat. Lets hope Felton’s ankle gets better the next few days.

by MR. MANN on Dec 16, 2009 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

thanks

i just found out i could sign on with my yahoo, so ill be on much more now hahaha

by StudMuffin15 on Dec 16, 2009 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

yeah man

been nice, despite the loss. Yet it was another close one, at least we’re not getting massive blowouts like previous seasons. A close loss though, is a loss nonetheless.

evening to everyone.

Hey, can LB trade Wallace, Henderson, Felton, Jackson, Brown, and Nazr to another team....

and that team would be pretty good.
